There will probably be an agreement between China and the US after all the grand standing ends. Right now dollar stores will have to be called 5 Dollar General. Hardly anything they and other dollar stores sell are made in China. Paper clips made in China? I'd bet and factory that makes paper clips is almost totally automated.

A fine Friday morning and evening to you early risers and late toilers! I'm up ahead of the alarm, no idea why, planning to work out. (Feeling lazy, but I'll have to kick myself into it.)
I remember that Phil Collins cover of the old Supremes song. It was new when Mrs. Wolfus No. 2-to-be and I, and four of our friends, drove in my big '65 Mercury to Knoxville, TN, for an SF convention where Stephen King was guest of honor. There were still AM stations that played Top 40 then (the '65 had only an AM radio), and we all sang along with that tune. Lessee . . . 65 F., high humidity, 10 mph wind. It's slated to be less humid and a little cooler through the weekend, but then the nasty heat will return. Much as I would prefer to sit here, sip coffee, and hang out with you all, I'd better go work out today.
Yesterday I entered my profile on the Hollywood South Casting website: found a good head shot that was done by a pro photographer when we had those done for my previous employer, added my radio experience and my training with certain dialects (stage accents, that is), told them I'd be willing to work as a background extra or in crowd scenes. And I set up a different free Protonmail account for any responses to go to. All it took was some of my time, so why not. I didn't absorb all the details back in the day, but this is how we got Japanese car brands to build in America. There was genuine animosity, Detroit was sub-standard and I believe Japanese imports got capped at 30% of the market. My Honda was built in Alabama. Adds to the shine, so why not. Tomorrow, haircut and other errands; Sunday, grocery, and I might run the big car out to the Walmart on Hwy. 90 just for the fun of it.

vibe coding:
Andrej Karpathy @karpathy Feb 2 There's a new kind of coding I call "vibe coding", where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists. It's possible because the LLMs (e.g. Cursor Composer w Sonnet) are getting too good. Also I just talk to Composer with SuperWhisper so I barely even touch the keyboard. I ask for the dumbest things like "decrease the padding on the sidebar by half" because I'm too lazy to find it. I "Accept All" always, I don't read the diffs anymore. When I get error messages I just copy paste them in with no comment, usually that fixes it. The code grows beyond my usual comprehension, I'd have to really read through it for a while. Sometimes the LLMs can't fix a bug so I just work around it or ask for random changes until it goes away. It's not too bad for throwaway weekend projects, but still quite amusing. I'm building a project or webapp, but it's not really coding - I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy paste stuff, and it mostly works. Posted by: m at April 11, 2025 06:43 AM (CQE5S) 81
I mean, really, it sounds like a PM giving vague instructions to a scripting team to build an app, who do, but the PM isn't happy because he got exactly what he asked for and he didn't know how to formulate what it is he wants into unambiguous language. Which is basically the fundamental problem of programming itself with an extra step added and a convenient stoolpigeon as a bonus.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke - Don't view this differently than it's intended. It's an observation, not an attack: They didn't come up with that on their own. They're following the Science. Something like 80% of social services workers are women, and it's not hard to see how these predictable, unquestioning, social media driven ladies would "help" or otherwise advise their cases and cause more confusion, chaos, and damage. Then, later on, the vast majority (75%+) of therapists are women, so when women seek needed therapy they are almost certain to find someone that will actively make their lives worse via stupid and trendy advice. Marriage is hard, so just get divorced if you're not happy! Get a loan and go back to college! Little seemingly throwaway silliness like "Jesus didn't gender" is a symptom of a much larger problem, and one that can't be easily fixed. The Temptations did a better job, of course, as it was their song. But if you remember what mid-80s music was like, Phil really took a leap reaching back to cover a 60s pop song and turned it into gold again. The video was also really well done for its time, too. It was nothing close to the greatness of Genesis’ “Land of Confusion” video or Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” video, but still enjoyable back then for pre-teen me. I bought the cassette or CD (can’t remember which one now), so it worked. >>Having never heard the term, may i inquire if "vibe coding" is really what it sounds like, which would be "sucking at writing script and pretending it's fine"? Vibe coding is essentially software generation by prompt, ie... Sally, Create an ios calculator app, now make the operator buttons orange, now make the 0 key twice as large as the other buttons, now add a dark mode toggle switch, now add a memory and recall function that will remember the last 20, etc. Whereas, I am using inline Ai for code completion and code suggestion. I know how to program in C++ and visual basic, but the ERP app I'm building leverages a whole bunch of technologies I have only passing familiarity with and am learning as I go. I'm motivated so, it took me a week to learn enough html, css and javascript to start to be able to funtionally leverage, tailwind, node.js and the other web dev components, and using ai to essentially fill in the gaps. I like to keep the Alphabet Corporation Hatefeed (I'm sure Apples have a similar feature) turned on in my phone's Chrome browser. It's a key NPC firmware updater, so I like it the best, and I read it every day.
The NPCs are mindless, unskilled rage conduits whose only purpose is as a weapon - so if you see what slop Alphabet is serving up for these pigs, you can suss out which things are urgent action items for the Party. They spew a lot of hate in different directions - a high baseline of free-floating aggression is necessary for the NPCs to function - but they tend to be highly focused on a particular topic where they want to capture and channel that aggression. The best way to do it is to focus that anger on an individual for NPCs to demonize, so figuring out which of their Goldsteins is getting the most ink reveals the highest current priority. Right now there is plenty of ginned up hate against Bessent, Trump, et. al. with regard to tariffs - but target #1, bold and underlined with a bullet, is very clearly Musk. Half the Hatefeed is devoted to him right now. DOGE is clearly their biggest concern, bar none. That's the pain point. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at April 11, 2025 07:49 AM (BI5O2) 164
