Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - April 9, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. This is the Wednesday night ONT.What happened to the fun commercials that created tag lines or became cultural references? What happened to the fun?? (Yes, these are the ridiculous thoughts that come to mind while mowing the lawn.) Not every commercial below will resonate with everybody but hope you find a few that make you giggle. Any others that were not just memorable, but were FUN? Chanel Tapper always gets a giggle when people scream at the mere sight of her record-breaking tongue. At 9.75 cm (3.8 in) from the tip to her lips, she holds the record for longest tongue (female). Even more amazingly, she's held on to her title since 2010, and she simply loves it when people get such a shock that they scream in horror when they see it. I don't know that we can come back to Earth at that point. I don't know if we can. And matter of fact, I'm thinking we probably can't. So there we are, loss of 6DOF control, four aft thrusters down, and I'm visualizing orbital mechanics. The space station is nose down. So we're not exactly level with the station, but below it. If you're below the station, you're moving faster. That's orbital mechanics. It's going to make you move away from the station. So I'm doing all of this in my mind. I don't know what control I have. What if I lose another thruster? What if we lose comm? What am I going to do? Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. The ONT remains tariff free. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

---------------- The Left intentionally saps the fun out of everything, because fun can become a focus that takes away from the majesty of the State, which needs to rule your mind and life at all times. Which qualifies their "joy" sloganeering for Kamala and Timmeh as a Super Lie. The hubris they have to not just deceive but to do it in all the most insulting ways is almost not of this world. It occurred to me:
Background: I recently learned that the original Greek meaning of the word "apocalypse " was "unveiling" - "revelation" - you have the apocalypse of John, familiar to us because it's in the New Testament; but there are also others in Jewish traditions like the apocalypse of Moses, the apocalypse of Abraham, etc. The theme is always the unveiling of hidden truths. We are living through The Apocalypse of Trump - an era of great unmasking and unveiling. Ugly secrets being revealed in all corners. It is also an apocalypse in the modern sense - it is the end times for the tyrannical so-called New World Order. Something to think about. Apollo largely used silver-zinc batteries, several hundred pounds each, made by EaglePicher. I’m sure they cost a fortune.
Temperatures fluctuate a lot. A day is about a month on the Moon, daylight about 2 weeks, and they timed the landings for morning. As it was, temps in sunlight were about +90F, and -150F below zero in the shadows. Cooling was the name of the game for both men and equipment. The Apollo personal cooling system they used for the EVA suits was very clever. A self-regulating sublimator. You had a porous material that allowed the cooling water to seep through, and then evaporate to vacuum. The water would freeze, and that would plug the pores. The rate was nicely self-regulating. If the heat load got high, the sublimation would increase. They still use those sublimators for the ISS EVA suits. Temp control on those EVA suits can be complex. As it is, even when the total heat load is positive, that is cooling is required, local heat loads can vary greatly. I think they use heated gloves for this reason. Even though the whole thing is having to reject heat, they still have to input heat to keep their hands from getting too cold. During the recent Wisconsin Supreme Court race, Milwaukee election officials allegedly processed ballots in secretive back rooms, blocking observers from watching the action. According to The Federalist, windows were covered, mail bins were stacked to obscure views, and the elections director, Paulina Gutierrez, reportedly kept these areas off-limits, even to folks like state Rep. Ok, had to stop at the Wendy's commercial...
In happier times, the X and I found ourselves browsing the KMart in our neck of the woods and someone got on the intercom calling for help in swimwear. Swear to God, she sounded like the Russian in that commercial, and I turned to the missus and said, "Ees next.." I got interested in reentry a few weeks ago, reading about Dragon and the Space Edsel. Now, Apollo CM and Soyuz were/are designed with a fail-safe "ballistic reentry" mode. If attitude control is lost, the capsule can still survive. It would be a hell of a high-g ride, and not something you'd want to do, but you'd make it back in one piece. Soyuz has had to do a few of these when things went away. Poor Don Pettit pulled 8+ g's coming back, with a load strapped to his chest. Another astronautette had to ride one of those, and dislocated her shoulder and bruised her spine. Now, guess what? Starliner and even Dragon, don't have any such ballistic fail-safe mode designed in. They require attitude control. 15 A new Passat for $20k in 2012. The Passat was discontinued in 2022. Then the base model was $28k.
40% increase in 10 years. But inflation was supposedly 1-2% that entire time. Sure, Jan. Only partially inflation. Partly all the government mandated things added to the vehicle. I have long thought that auto regulation was classic fascism. The government gets to preen about their "great work" and control, and the auto industry gets to mark up the cars and blame the feds. Simple base cars don't make as much profit which is why they used to sell options so hard. Easier and cheaper to produce to have government "mandate" all the gimmicks so you don't get a choice and they don't have to build different cars. If Chy-nah Food Co buys 20 sections of Kansas wheat land, and farms it as a good corporate citizen, buying their inputs from U.S. vendors, and hiring U.S. citizens to do the farm work, then it is qualitatively no different from Archer Daniels Midland owning and running that parcel. Ok, so we were just talking a while & cat decided to jump into my lap. No problem, I love cats. Petted the mama-to-be & noticed...contractions? Sure enough! Cat wanted to have her babies on my lap!
