Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - April 9, 2025 [TRex]

20250408-image(2).jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT.

[Top photo: Previously unknown advertisement for Miller Lite]

***

A special welcome to those who have given up commenting on Ace of Spades for Lent and have assumed temporary lurker status. The rest of you know what that means. More commenting to take up the slack. Comment of the week honors are at stake.

***

In the before times, some commercials were entertaining.

There are exceptions but seems like everything has become high concept or fine art. They lecture the viewers or show how "responsible" the company is. They seemingly try to distance themselves from their products or services and the messy business of capitalism. They lean heavily on the crutch of some celebrity that an ad agency presumes everyone knows or cares about or put on choreographed dance numbers.

What happened to the fun commercials that created tag lines or became cultural references?

What happened to the fun??

(Yes, these are the ridiculous thoughts that come to mind while mowing the lawn.)

Not every commercial below will resonate with everybody but hope you find a few that make you giggle. Any others that were not just memorable, but were FUN?

***

The E Trade baby series:

***

Where's the beef?

Soviet fashion show was another Wendy's classic:

***

Had to include Hump Day for a Wednesday ONT:

SPRINKLES!

***

The original Budweiser frogs:

Things got a little stranger in subsequent spots with the lizards and ferret.

***

"Yes, I am."

Here's the companion spot with Coach K:

***

"I Can't Believe I Ate the Whole Thing."

***

FedEx fast talker:

Another FedEx classic "Let's go with De Ferran."

***

ESPN SportsCenter Y2K test:

***

Volkswagen Darth Vader:

***

I don't know why the Kool Aid Man could never find the door but somehow we all got used to a giant pitcher of fruit punch destroying everything?

Since we are talking about crashing through walls, here is John Madden's first commerical for Miller Lite. The "less filling, tastes great" series of commercials made extensive use of celebrities, typically poking fun at themselves. This Madden commercial was part of his transition from football coach to TV commentator.

***

Wassup was not high brow humor but it sparked a universal tagline.

***

More of a concept piece than laugh out loud funny, but still entertaining:

***

I thought it was only a model. The Real-Life "Holy Grail" Castle Is Full of Monty Python References

***

Dear Wednesday ONT readers, I give you...the Guinness World Record for the female with the longest tongue.

Chanel Tapper always gets a giggle when people scream at the mere sight of her record-breaking tongue.

At 9.75 cm (3.8 in) from the tip to her lips, she holds the record for longest tongue (female). Even more amazingly, she's held on to her title since 2010, and she simply loves it when people get such a shock that they scream in horror when they see it.

I know what you're saying. If Chanel holds the record for females, what is the record for males?

Nick Stoeberl from Salinas, California has the world's longest tongue (male), measuring 10.1 cm (3.97 in).

Gene Simmons was unavailable for comment.

Interesting read on the Starliner/ISS saga: Starliner's flight to the space station was far wilder than most of us thought

Excerpt:

I don't know that we can come back to Earth at that point. I don't know if we can. And matter of fact, I'm thinking we probably can't. So there we are, loss of 6DOF control, four aft thrusters down, and I'm visualizing orbital mechanics. The space station is nose down. So we're not exactly level with the station, but below it. If you're below the station, you're moving faster. That's orbital mechanics. It's going to make you move away from the station. So I'm doing all of this in my mind. I don't know what control I have. What if I lose another thruster? What if we lose comm? What am I going to do?

Gref - are you plugged in tonight? The article will likely resonate with you.

***

Random but thought the Horde might enjoy reading about the business of getting spy shots of pre-production cars.

Spyshots: The golden age of tip-offs, car chases and inside jobs

We've seen prototypes around Los Angeles, Munich, and near the Nurburgring but never got a great photo of a big secret scoop. Any such stories among the Horde?

***

Particle Man for our big ONT finish:

***

Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. The ONT remains tariff free.

101 What happened to the fun??
----------------

The Left intentionally saps the fun out of everything, because fun can become a focus that takes away from the majesty of the State, which needs to rule your mind and life at all times. Which qualifies their "joy" sloganeering for Kamala and Timmeh as a Super Lie.

The hubris they have to not just deceive but to do it in all the most insulting ways is almost not of this world. Imagine the viciousness it takes to make everything miserable for as many people as possible every waking minute of your life, and then to announce that you are Joy Personified.

Background: I recently learned that the original Greek meaning of the word "apocalypse " was "unveiling" - "revelation" - you have the apocalypse of John, familiar to us because it's in the New Testament; but there are also others in Jewish traditions like the apocalypse of Moses, the apocalypse of Abraham, etc. The theme is always the unveiling of hidden truths.

We are living through The Apocalypse of Trump - an era of great unmasking and unveiling. Ugly secrets being revealed in all corners.

It is also an apocalypse in the modern sense - it is the end times for the tyrannical so-called New World Order.

Something to think about.

The Apollo personal cooling system they used for the EVA suits was very clever. A self-regulating sublimator.

You had a porous material that allowed the cooling water to seep through, and then evaporate to vacuum. The water would freeze, and that would plug the pores. The rate was nicely self-regulating. If the heat load got high, the sublimation would increase.

They still use those sublimators for the ISS EVA suits.

Kuhlayd's Amphora

An ancient Elvish magical item, from the days of their wars with the Dwarves. A clay amphora, that, when filled with fruit juice, grows to 5 feet tall, sprouts arms and legs and charges the nearest wall, punching a 5'x5' hole through it.

The Lesser version shatters after one use. The Greater version can be used once a week, but only on Saturday mornings.

Temp control on those EVA suits can be complex. As it is, even when the total heat load is positive, that is cooling is required, local heat loads can vary greatly.

I think they use heated gloves for this reason. Even though the whole thing is having to reject heat, they still have to input heat to keep their hands from getting too cold.

Dodge didn't renew and went with a different actress in '68. It wasn't a good move. They switched to Dodge Fever as a slogan and did OK but Joan Parker was not as memorable.

They worked it down to one option; shut the system completely down and re-boot (where have I heard that), if things rebooted correctly they had a chance of correcting their position and docking. Otherwise, they would become a flaming ball of space debris screaming into earth's atmosphere.

I got interested in reentry a few weeks ago, reading about Dragon and the Space Edsel.

Now, Apollo CM and Soyuz were/are designed with a fail-safe "ballistic reentry" mode. If attitude control is lost, the capsule can still survive. It would be a hell of a high-g ride, and not something you'd want to do, but you'd make it back in one piece.

Soyuz has had to do a few of these when things went away. Poor Don Pettit pulled 8+ g's coming back, with a load strapped to his chest. Another astronautette had to ride one of those, and dislocated her shoulder and bruised her spine.

Now, guess what? Starliner and even Dragon, don't have any such ballistic fail-safe mode designed in. They require attitude control.

Reporting Officer: Panzino
Type of Incident: Feline rideshare gone rogue

Details:
Today’s patrol took an unexpected turn when Officer Panzino responded to a report of a meowing engine. Upon closer inspection, a very fluffy suspect was discovered attempting to Uber its way across town via car engine.

After a brief standoff (lots of sassy blinking and tiny mews), the kitten was safely removed and is now in the care of Beaufort County Animal Services—where it's resting comfortably and reconsidering its travel choices.

Marillion did, also. After spending a ton of time and money on the concept album "Brave," it was less than a year until "Afraid of Sunlight," which was the end of their contract with EMI.

The back cover had the text "this album was knocked out." The "quickly" was just implied.

It's not "crap," though. They even got a lyrical theme going, with almost all the songs being about the price of fame. Ending with a tribute to (or a dig at?) Kurt Cobain.

They send you pictures of yourself
It's someone you don't know
And they call you a genius
Cause you're easier to sell

I hope for your sake

Sure, Jan.

Only partially inflation. Partly all the government mandated things added to the vehicle. I have long thought that auto regulation was classic fascism. The government gets to preen about their "great work" and control, and the auto industry gets to mark up the cars and blame the feds. Simple base cars don't make as much profit which is why they used to sell options so hard. Easier and cheaper to produce to have government "mandate" all the gimmicks so you don't get a choice and they don't have to build different cars.

I am wondering about the increase of price on the Passat from 2012 to 2022. I think that was mostly inflation. How many "new" government mandates were added over that time period? Emissions, ABS, air bags, fuel economy mandates, etc. were pretty well already in effect.

That would fall under the qualification of "using the land in a manner detrimental to the USA." This is called "political risk". If I want to develop a uranium mine in say, Gabon, I have to accept the fact that Gabon might expropriate the finished mine without compensation.

If Chy-nah Food Co buys 20 sections of Kansas wheat land, and farms it as a good corporate citizen, buying their inputs from U.S. vendors, and hiring U.S. citizens to do the farm work, then it is qualitatively no different from Archer Daniels Midland owning and running that parcel. But if they staff it all with Chinese nationals, use Chinese seed, and Chinese fertilizer, and Chinese tractors, then they are not being good corporate citizens, are they?

There's plenty of fraud, sure, by regular lying joes as well... with a wink & nod by the office workers as they "approve" the papers submitted by non-qualified and non-citizens and fakers.

PROSECUTIONS! Or else it's all bullshit.

418 I think it was Marcus T that posted this:

"UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES MAY A NONCITIZEN BE ELIGIBLE FOR SSI?
A noncitizen (also called an "alien" for immigration purposes) may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if he or she meets the requirements of the laws for noncitizens that went into effect on August 22, 1996. In general, beginning August 22, 1996, most noncitizens must meet two requirements to be potentially eligible for SSI:
be in a qualified alien category; and
meet a condition that allows qualified aliens to get SSI.

There are 7 categories of qualified aliens. ..."

I suspect the "oh lawd call an ambulance!!!" folks are a fraction of a percent of the actual loss to government employees and politicians/politically connected family members.

No Mars for me. If Elon invents the Epstein Drive soon, then I might be able to go. Of course boosting out of the earth's gravity well would still be problem.

Blasting off from earth surface with an Epstein Drive rocket would be like setting off small tactical nuke at the launch pad. Exhaust velocities 10% c.

So, still need chemical rockets to get off the ground. Unless, one starts to consider a space elevator....

At this point it seems reasonable to assume that fraud is the ONLY goal of every program until we are shown otherwise.

430 With the Miller Lite references, did anyone know that this is the 50th anniversary of Miller Lite introduction?

431 FYI, a lot of these 80's commercials (Wendy's, FedEx) were the work of the same guy, Joe Sedelmaier.

Growing up, dad bought a VHS tape with like an hour of this guy's stuff. Pure genius.

436 Toller Beitrag!
