I'm not a big fan of the style with its echoes of Gauguin -type exaggeration. But I do like the way he captured the metallic sheen of the cup in the upper left and the nacre of the shell interiors. There's a sense of contentment that comes from a small but delicious snack.

The owner trained under Emeril LaGasse. He worked at Cafe Nola or one of Em’s places.
Most of their food is rilly rilly good. I’m not crazy about the kielbasa they use in some of the dishes (i guess andouille is too expensive?) but I do recommend. If you go to the farmer’s market, lots of other good food offerings too.

I expect that the argument goes something like this - trade deficit:
- causes loss of US industries --> less revenue to tax
- this causes more long term unemployment --> more welfare spent
Less revenue + more spending == bigger deficit.
Now, this is good for the people in office because they just promise you more goodies in return for your vote, secure in the knowledge that the reckoning will fall due in the future. The problem is, now is the future.

I was merely pointing out the limitations of GDP as a measurement. It basically counts government debt spending as growth. Fake, fake, fake.
But to my larger point, let us use an analogy. Let us say that you and I are shopping for handguns. You want something in 9mm, polymer frame, high capacity, has the cool "accelerator" takedown lever, adjustable grips, red dot integral sights, etc.
I, however want something vintage, maybe that doesn't have a removable magazine, uses a caliber that is hard to find, hardwood grips, takedown requires a screwdriver and three hands, the iron sights are more of a recommendation, etc.
Turns out, the cash value of them is identical. Yours is cutting edge while mine is really old. Whose "standard of living" is better? Who enjoys what they have more?
I've not been to France, but i spent time in Germany and I wasn't aware of any particular inferiority so much as things were just different, a bit odd.

I suspect that most people have no idea what it's like in different parts of the world. We only know what we're told by the media - conveniently forgetting that they lie about everything - or what we see on infrequent visits to tourist areas. Admittedly, there are people who go native - to an extent - but can you really trust someone named after a sex toy?

Deployment, lived off base in a local hotel near Ramstein. I walked around Landstuhl quite a bit, spent a day in Trier just moseying around, visiting shops. I had six years of German in school, so while it was rusty, I could pass for a native.
I think when you talk of standard of living, it should be more along basic lines - clean water, adequate shelter, low crime, because when you get into square footage or bathrooms, that's a lot more subjective.
I'm sure you know that a ton of US troops chose to retire in Germany because they like it so much. Before the Covid, my plan was to do a stat tour for a year with the family.

The only place in Germany I really didn't like was Berlin. This was 20 years ago; it may be different now. I found it to be just a big, ugly city. West and East. Both ugly in different ways. And they seem to have some sort of sanitation problem. It's not like there's heaps of trash or anything, but everywhere I went there had a gross smell, like Philly. Not so in Vienna.
And most places in Germany, people were pretty nice. But in Berlin, I was repeatedly called on the carpet by drunk dipshits demanding to know why I invaded Iraq.

That doesn’t really count. You were essentially living in USA adjacent.
I’m talking live in I dunno Düsseldorf in a typical apartment. Work with Germans. Live with them, do the things they do, etc. It’s a different world from what a typical American life is. Not worse in every way. There are some good things. But overall it’s a less comfortable lifestyle.
And I’m Not just talking their cars are small and our are big. More like we have cars they don’t really. We own homes. In Germany? Not so much. Their home worship rate is something like 40%. Most middle class people are life long renters. Which means there is little if any generational wealth created to pass down. Your grandfather rented, your father rented you rent and so will your kids and grandkids.

Right, and Americans are famously the biggest materialists in the world. We are obsessed with buying stuff, so we have more stuff, but we also have huge debts. Life-long rental vs debt slavery is a more accurate comparison.
The biggest difference is that until Merkel and Co. went completely insane, Germany had strong, stable working class and ours was being hollowed out. Lower crime, higher social cohesion as well.
Now Germany's a mess and we may be getting back to where we should be, but again, it does have its advantage. Or did.

Lots of little pubs and bars and restaurants and cafes and such where everyone goes after
Overall, not a lot of wealth but lots of daily social activity and meeting of the type you don't see so much of here in the US.

Microsoft terminated the jobs of the employees who protested at company events Friday over the Israeli military’s use of Microsoft’s AI. Ibtihal Aboussad and Vaniya Agrawal were terminated today.
Ibtihal Aboussad, a software engineer in the company’s AI division who is based in Canada, was fired Monday over “just cause, wilful misconduct, disobedience or wilful neglect of duty,” according to one of the documents.
Another Microsoft software engineer, Vaniya Agrawal, had said she would resign from the company on April 11. But Microsoft terminated her role Monday, according to an internal message viewed by CNBC. The company wrote that it “has decided to make your resignation immediately effective today.”
Both employees chose Microsoft’s 50th anniversary event to publicly voice their criticism.

I think they made about $500 million from China last year. I mean...that's not a small amount of money, but it's roughly 1/18 of what Hollywood made in America.

EU funding of non-governmental organisations is "too opaque", auditors found on Monday in a report set to further fan a heated political tussle over the financing of environmental groups. The European Union awarded about 7.4 billion euros ($8 billion) to a plethora of NGOs between 2021 and 2023, but public information about who got the money and how it was used is patchy, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) said. "EU funding for NGOs is too opaque and suffers from a lack of transparency," said Laima Andrikiene, the report's lead auditor. "We are not talking about peanuts here," she added.

Chinese propaganda fell off a cliff a few years back when China took over its own box office with home-grown films.
The biggest film in the world this year made $2 billion. It's animated, has had almost no release in America, and is almost entirely made from China. And it's Chinese made. Ne Zha 2.
The last major studio with any real foothold in China is Disney, and even then, it's been a while since Disney's put pro-Chinese stuff out there. A few years. They've shifted to the tranny/DEI stuff to fill the gap since.

At least 50 hippos and other large animals have been killed by anthrax poisoning in eastern Congo's Virunga National Park and have been spotted floating along a major river that feeds one of Africa's great lakes.
Tests confirmed anthrax poisoning, said Virunga Park director Emmanuel De Merode, on Tuesday, adding that buffalo have been killed too.
The exact cause of the poisoning was not yet clear.

Lots of little pubs and bars and restaurants and cafes and such where everyone goes after classes work to hang out with your buds or girlfriend or generally to meet the opposite3 sex and chat them up.
Overall, not a lot of wealth but lots of daily social activity and meeting of the type you don't see so much of here in the US.

Saw that in Italy. I loved this tradition the town of Vieste had, it probably occurred all over the Gargano but Vieste was where I stayed, the locals would take a stroll and chat in the town square during the evening.

As attenuated as that seems, I can buy it to a point.
The creation of the programs by Congress caused the spending, and if those programs are overused or over subscribed (as compared to original projections) and if that overuse can somehow be ascribed to trade deficits, I guess I get it. But its a big stretch.

Ryan Wesley Routh sought to purchase a rocket launcher from Ukraine the month before he was arrested for allegedly attempting to assassination President Donald Trump.
