Texas has gotten bluer over the past ten years, going from Trump +9 to Trump +14.
All while there are indications that establishment forces like Cornyn have lost massive support within the party.
Again, it's not generally progressives moving to Texas. It's conservatives who have given up on blue states.
There are other states to worry about.

Both the federal debt/deficit and the trade deficit were unsustainable in the long run so the question is when do you want the pain and how much--short term (bad possibly) or long term (system collapse-much worse).

Tariff supporters need to settle on a cases belli. Are the tariffs to bring back American manufacturing? Are they to replace the income tax with tariff revenue? Or are they to equalize international trade?
Because it can't be all three, at least two of those are mutually exclusive. If we manufactuire everything here in America then there will be no tariff revenue to collect, which means a different funding mechanism for the government will have to discovered.

There's a reason why there are tariffs on US goods. Domestic food producers, energy producers, and others are protected from US competition. Universal health care and farm subsidies are on the line. There's already pressure in the EU for generous retirement and pension benefits to be rescinded. A significant reduction of US trade restriction will put a lot of popular pressure on European governments.

They aren't exclusive. They're competing uses, and a sufficiently high or low tariff leans more towards one goal over the other, but a tariff not on the extremes does all three in some measure.

When you are the primary player, it makes sense to not reveal your hole card. We are now in the bilateral negotiation stage where the weaker players are likely to fold quickly but the others like the EU are likely to raise stakes.
The first circumstance to raise revenue to replace US spending has to deal with the present existence and reliance on income tax as the major revenue source--give the present Congress more revenue, then you simply get all of it pissed away. So that is more a long term project.
The Second, Trump has already demanded that basic nat sec industry production be onshored--energy, steel, aluminum, car production, tech, etc. and will continue to do so.
The third circumstance depends on other players and their analysis of their own markets and economy needs. Basing your economy on mercantilism always risks someone calling you on your behavior. That is what is happening now.

Because we can no longer afford to give countries around the world $1 trillion a year which they then turn around and use a good portion of to buy treasury bonds so we can pay interest on all that extra money we sent them so fed.gov can put us 36 trillion in debt.
We've tried "free" & "fair" trade for 50 years.
It is neither free nor fair.
Would we have been better off had we not gone all in on financing the economic growth of the rest of the world in order to maintain the reserve currency of the U.S. dollar after the end of the Bretton-Woods agreement, is the question you should be asking yourself.
Are we now better off having China make everything, so badly, that the words "planned obsolescence" came into the lexicon as a result of making everything to be very cheap and very disposable?
Do you feel better knowing you saved a few bucks on Temu but also helped out the destruction of our manufacturing sector, fentanyl production, and the People's Liberation Army?

I've seen no call for manufacturing "everything" here in the US. Nor for replacing the income tax with a customs tax. And equalizing international trade is a nice idea, but like the other two nice ideas, they are subject to events and international markets. The President, the Congress, and the American people know that the financial future of the country prior to January 21, 2025 was unsustainable. Time for a change, and a tariff regime was deemed (and I agree) the least painful and most promising course for national prosperity.

Easier to say that most nations, more or less, rely on mercantilism by exporting more than they take in and the US has accepted that in order for nat sec priorities from the Cold War and reserve currency status which increases 'soft power'. US trade deficit has consistently been massive since 1998 in real terms and the last surplus the US ran was in 1975. 50 years ago.
Not sustainable.

One of the things that aided the Russians in the SMO much was the stocks of munitions, the mothballed factories that could be brought on line quickly and obsolete tanks that could easily be turned to use as mobile artillery.
