7 Ahead of the layoffs, Automattic’s website listed 1,744 employees

Why? How? Like pre Musk Twitter I struggle to be able to justify more than about 25% of that given what they actually do.

Speaking of which, I see TechCrunch’s top story is an interview with an author of what sounds like intensely boring science fiction about how terrible Elon Musk is. Apparently space travel money could go instead to promoting gay racial Communism and we’d all be better off.

I'm only seeing it on the sign DJT used yesterday that had Israel charging 33% and US going to charge 17%. That sign was probably produced before Israel decided to drop tariffs on US.

21 Now I'm really lost on this tariff business

Based on the bulk of the article, a lot of countries which charge massive tariffs on the US think that the US shouldn't charge tariffs on them and are prepared to hit us where it hurts to be able to continue screwing over the American people.

OTOH, Israel dropped tariffs and are just waiting to see if, as expected, the US drops tariffs in response.

That's the same Breitbart article I linked to earlier. And Bessent doesn't explain WHY it applied to Israel.

And about the "33%", I understand that that's the overall trade deficit that the US has with Israel, not that Israel has a 33% import tariff on US goods - because we don't, as far as I know.

Again, except for agriculture and one other area, there has been a tariff-free trade agreement between the US and Israel since the 1980s.

I spent yesterday afternoon setting up the 2013-ish iMac I was, uh, "gifted" by my former employer when it went out of service in '21 or so. The keyboard needed new batteries and the mouse a charge. Otherwise it fired right up. I installed Brave, the latest Firefox, VLC, a PDF reader, and a File Explorer-like tool that I intend to use rather than Mac's Finder. I didn't upgrade to the latest OS yet, because I'm not sure I need to.

Maybe some more memory (it has 8GB and is not at all slow) -- you could do that with older Macs, right?

55 Today Linda and I are hopping into the Buick and taking off along Hwy. 90 to the town of Franklin. Apparently my paternal grandfather lived and worked there more than 100 years ago before migrating to Da Swamp. Da *Big* Swamp, I should say, since Franklin itself sits on a bayou and is next door to the Atchafalaya Basin. Anyway, it has a Historic District with shops and places to eat. And this will be a good run for the car, and my first road trip since I drove four hours to Vicksburg in '22 to adopt Stirling the then-kitten.

84 Don't see many attempting impartiality these days. Perhaps it is for the best - makes it more important to read multiple views. Takes a bit of time, but worth it. I don't usually have to wonder who is closer to right on a topic after reading from different angles. One or another usually beclown themselves badly.

85 Trump and Bessent are clear on one thing, which is their goal of replacing some part of income tax revenue with tariff revenue. Think of it as a national sales tax. But the Congress has yet to deliver the accompanying tax cuts.

They are trying to justify the tariff levels by pointing to other countries policies and tariffs, but I bet those countries start marching in with explanations and these initial numbers get negotiated.

Back when my chirrens were young they used to spend Saturday afternoon with their spinster aunt - until they understood and got tired of her being a leftist loon - and on the way to her house we would stop and get McDonalds for lunch.

So, McDonalds changed something about their fries and one day my daughter ate one and said, "these are full of sad". Haven't had McDonalds since.
