The removals, which came amid a mass reduction in force across the health department, effectively gutted leadership at the NIH's infectious disease office and key parts of the Food and Drug Administration, stunning agency employees and leaving the broader public health community in disbelief. From any objective perspective Fauci and his allies completely and utterly failed with COVID. Removing them isn't "revenge" its trying to right a system that went very, very wrong. Posted by: 18-1 at April 02, 2025 03:21 PM (t0Rmr) 3

Makary and new NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya are also Fauci critics who gained prominence as opponents of the government's Covid response, with Bhattacharya at one point calling Fauci's role during Covid a "propaganda campaign." They have both vowed to overhaul the agencies and refocus public health priorities.
Bhattacharya was RIGHT about everything he disagreed with Fauci on. The FNM keeps wishing this away. There has to be consequences for making objectively bad decisions in government. Posted by: 18-1 at April 02, 2025 03:23 PM (t0Rmr) 9

"Kennedy ordered cuts to a range of divisions focused on HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases"
It's about fucking time. HIV is an almost entirely preventable disease mostly localized in a small segment of the population. But it was localized in one of the most preferred populations in all of human history -- homosexuals -- and therefore of course we had to spend trillions on it. All homos had to do to effectively eradicate HIV on their own was stop engaging in violent group sex with 20 fags a night, without any protection whatsoever. But that was too much to ask. Even today, homos are still spreading HIV. Imagine if all the HIV money went to diseases like cancer and heart disease, how much better treatments for those would be today. Strange how the people who pushed these policies didn't seem to act like it was a life or death situation. Kind of like Obama decrying sea levels rising for years than retiring to a mansion on the ocean. Posted by: Harry Paratestes at April 02, 2025 03:28 PM (uCjyK) 31

IIRC, at one time the money spent on AIDS was more than all other diseases combine. For a disease that killed fewer annually than male breast cancer.
I recall during the AIDS hysteria that a couple of medical researchers authored an article in the Wall Street Journal noting that they were trying to find treatments for schizophrenia, a terrible, terrible disease that affects millions of people, and they were getting their Federal funding cut off. Meanwhile, there was infinite Federal money available to study AIDS-related dementia, a condition that only affected terminal AIDS patients in the last few months of their lives. If, in the afterlife, all became clear with what occurred on earth, we would find out HIV was a government created virus meant to curb human reproduction through fear or a rather benign virus that 90+ % of humans come into contact with, but because they have a healthy immune system, their body deals with it without symptoms or repercussions.
Fortunately, when we are in the Eschaton, we won't really be concerned with such political things, we will be serving the Lord and praying for the souls on earth as intercessors. Posted by: You Won't Like It But... at April 02, 2025 04:12 PM (BN7Mi) 291
I've mentioned this anecdote before but it bears repeating.
My wife's father was a brilliant immunologist and was pivotal in the development of AZT and early HIV research. This of course ran him into working with Fauci at a professional network level. When COVID hit, and Fauci got out on TV, my mother-in-law, who is a living saint on earth and doesn't speak ill of a single soul, told me "Never trust a word out of that snake's mouth. All he cared about was fame and recognition and the size of his crowd of groupies following him around at conferences." Turns out some things don't change. I'm curious. Someone here more knowledgeable here might know this. My understanding is that in some cases, the NIH gives federal grants to private pharmaceutical companies for a given purpose. Let's say those grants lead to the Pharmaceutical company discovering a cure (or even a treatment) to some disease. Wonderful.
Now, my question. Does the Pharmaceutical Company get to file a patent on that cure/treatment in total, despite the financing coming from the taxpayer? And, is there any renumeration to the US Government in that the taxpayer made that cure/treatment possible? Posted by: Orson at April 02, 2025 04:16 PM (dIske) 315

Not quite sure - but in MOST cases the reason that government (or foundations like LLS or JDF) start pumping money into drug research is when investigational products that show promise reach a point in their patent life where its not financially beneficial to the company to continue the drug trials/research. Thus the government breathes life back into compounds that might otherwise never see the light of day again. Posted by: Defenestratus at April 02, 2025 04:21 PM (WYStd) 329

The US retirement age is 67. Nether of these people should still be in senior management positions, and certainly not for the number of years that they were.
