No easy answer to this in part because being called a nazi might not be slander at all. Depends to some degree on the context.

If the speaker is saying you are a member of the nazi party, that's a statement of fact, and can be actionable as slander.

If the speaker is just saying "you're a nazi" in a colloquial derogatory sense, then that's arguably opinion and thus not actionable at all.

My best guess is that someone calling Elon a nazi is not gonna be considered slander per se. But I also think Elon wouldn't have a hard time showing actual injury from being called that -- meaning he doesn't need it to be per se -- given that shitmongers are burning down his dealerships.

Sullivan addressed a different issue than statement of fact vs opinion. Sullivan address the question of whether, in addition to being a statement of fact and slanderous, certain statements about public figures needed a higher standard of malice from the speaker. But regardless, I think Sullivan is bullshit and should be overruled. It's basically a license to lie and defame public figures.

Statements that someone committed criminal acts are generally considered statements of fact sufficient for a slander case.

But like with "nazi," the word "thief" also has a colloquial use and understanding as a general derogatory term, and not necessarily that an actual criminal theft occurred.

My dad worked for NASA, and he with some of the group who came over after the war. He said they were all fairly smart, but he always had the impression that some of them wanted to go back to Germany one day. Makes sense, as I am sure that some of their extended family members were still back there.

I have a picture of my dad getting an award from WVB back when Dad worked at the Goddard Space Center before transferring to Houston to work at NASA.

A local observation - the Texas Dem Party pretty much collapsed after Anne Richards lost and they proudly announced that they were now the Brown and Black Party, and didn't need or want any white votes (yes their chairman said that openly) It's now been 30 years and that rump of a party is every bit as dysfunctional as ever, with no sign they even want to change.

They only made a splash with Beto because all of his financing came from out of State, probably from USAID. The instate party really had nothing at all to do with his campaign. The only spots they run are the ghettoes of the big cities, which is where Jasmine Crockett holds court.

Assuming the Democrat machine has been largely funded by the federal government for a while (lets say minimum of 14 years, max of decades), there's still a coterie of actual funders not coming from the feds.

People like the Pritzker family.

I think the fed funding has largely gone to creating the media ecosystem, not directly funding elections (though there seems to be no shortage of that). The direct funding of elections was mostly done privately by actual donors (both foreign and domestic, hence the ActBlue shenanigans).

So, there's still a bunch of billionaires still funding the left right now. It opens up a lot, losing USAID funding, but it doesn't completely collapse the party's funding.

There's a hole, but someone has to jump in. And that jump needs to say things that are heterodox to common media truths.

It's possible. Could happen tomorrow. But it's not going to be easy.
