Judge Who Blocked Trump's Deportations Took Junket With Anti-Trump Sponsor and Anti-Trump Speakers

But of course he refuses to recuse himself.

A federal judge who recently halted President Donald Trump's deportation orders for illegal alien gang members attended a judicial conference funded and staffed by organizations and individuals with a history of anti-Trump rhetoric and activism.

Key Details:

Judge James Boasberg attended a Rodel Institute conference featuring speakers and sponsors openly hostile to President Trump and his policies.

The event was funded by progressive foundations known for supporting anti-Trump immigration initiatives.

Boasberg later blocked a Trump administration policy targeting the deportation of illegal alien gang members.

Diving Deeper:

Months before he issued a high-profile ruling to block deportations under President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement policies, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg attended a privately funded judicial fellowship event rife with anti-Trump speakers and sponsors. The July 2024 conference, held in the elite enclave of Sun Valley, Idaho, was part of the Rodel Judicial Fellowship program--a gathering that appears to have blurred the lines between judicial ethics and political activism.

The event's sessions included ideologically charged topics like "The Role of Judges in a Democracy" and "The State of Democracy"--language nearly indistinguishable from the DNC's 2024 campaign rhetoric. According to ethics disclosures obtained by Just the News, Boasberg was one of twelve federal judges in attendance, nine of whom were nominated by Democrat presidents.

The conference was underwritten by organizations that have aggressively opposed President Trump's immigration reforms. The Henry Luce Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Hewlett Foundation were all financial backers. These groups fund entities such as the Migration Policy Institute, the Brennan Center for Justice, and Documented--all of which have criticized Trump's approach to border enforcement and immigration law.

Perhaps most concerning is the institutional ideology behind the Rodel Institute itself. Its CEO, John Kroger--a former Clinton advisor and Schumer aide--has publicly called Trump "disqualified" from holding office and decried Republicans' opposition to critical race theory as "undemocratic." Kroger also praised Biden's controversial special counsel Jack Smith and accused the Trump administration of undermining constitutional law. His leadership casts a shadow over any claim that Rodel's programming is nonpartisan.

Boasberg is also demanding Trump turn over national security documents to him concerning decision-making about the deportations. AG Pam Bondi now says Boasberg has no right to national security information.

Pam Bondi, the attorney general under President Donald Trump, rebuked U.S. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg for attempting to obtain "national security information," calling his request improper and unconstitutional. "He's trying to ask us about national security information, which he is absolutely not entitled to!" Bondi told Fox News's Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures. The comments came after Boasberg ordered a halt to deportation flights involving MS-13 members and other gang-affiliated illegal immigrants--many of whom were sent back to El Salvador just days prior.

Bondi claimed that Judge Boasberg "dragged us into court on a Saturday" with little notice, a move she characterized as a judicial ambush. She said the administration remains undeterred and will return to court on Monday to continue its appeal. "We will win. We will prevail. There are 261 reasons why Americans are safer today, and that's because those people are now in an El Salvador prison," she added.

Related: Bondi warned Jasmine Crockett about her agitation for political violence.

Attorney General Pam Bondi didn't mince words Sunday morning when she directly addressed Rep. Jasmine Crockett's inflammatory rhetoric toward Elon Musk. Speaking on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, Bondi emphasized the serious implications of Crockett's remarks, especially given her role as an elected official. "Nothing will happen to Elon Musk, and we're going to fight to protect all of the Tesla owners throughout this country," Bondi said, underscoring the government's obligation to shield private enterprise from politically driven intimidation tactics.

...

The "Tesla Takedown" movement, which has scheduled over 500 protests nationwide on March 29, coincides with Crockett's birthday--a date the Democrat has described as symbolic of her hopes to "see Elon taken down." The optics of a sitting congresswoman aligning herself with coordinated protests--some of which have already resulted in property damage--raises red flags about the growing radicalism within the DNC's activist base.

As Bondi pointed out, Crockett's position as a lawmaker carries with it a heightened responsibility. "We are not coming off these charges," Bondi said, noting the DOJ's aggressive stance on any behavior that escalates from protest to criminal activity. "We are looking at everything, especially if this is a concerted effort."

Hello everyone! I hope you're enjoying the rain.

What an amazing March so far. I'm grateful for that.

87 From Julie Kelly -

"In Oct 2023, Jeb Boasberg sentenced a couple convicted of nonviolent misdemeanors for Jan 6 to prison. The husband, Christopher Price, had just learned his cancer returned--Boasberg sentenced him to 45 days in federal prison.

Boasberg sent his wife, Cynthia Bellinger, to federal prison for four months on same misdemeanors.

Boasberg: "And while I completely agree that your actions were not violent, you didn't assault anyone, you didn't destroy anyone, you didn't steal anything, you were part of that mob. And a mob is only a mob if it has numbers. If it is three people or five people or seven or fifty, they don't get anywhere because the Capitol Police is able to resist them."

He then berated the couple for not having remorse over their nonviolent participation in the protest:

"The conduct of you folks, if you had accepted responsibility and been remorseful early on, you wouldn't be here. But you weren't. You haven't accepted responsibility. You never accepted responsibility. You fought everything. And even today I don't hear remorse."

I think this is a deep state op to use all of their power to stop trump in his tracks any literally everything and to get the kind of people who voted for Trump to become discouraged in the system and shut the fuck up and die off already to make way for the New Americans who know to keep their mouths shut and do as they're told.

I've long had this fantasy about being able to dress down a judge like they do to parties in the courtroom and (occasionally) their lawyers.

It would be very satisfying.

Unfortunately, it doesn't happen in real life. But if I were the defendants in the J6 case and the judge lectured me about remorse, I would have a hard time not rolling my eyes.

123 Look at the constitution. This is way beyond the role carved out for the judiciary. It not only directly intrudes on the presidents Article II powers, it challenges the plain language of the constitution. That said, this is more an administrative issue for SCOTUS who has ceded this subterfuge to the lower courts. Roberts had numerous opportunities to stop it. He didn’t. That’s either a deliberate act of malice or incompetence. Either way the Executive Branch and the people who elected the president should turn back this grotesque judicial overreach.

Boasberg's wife got fedgov money and his daughter is in an NGO (probably getting fed money) that opposes removal of illegals.

Plus, Boasberg was picked by Roberts personally to head the FISA court during the Trump I era when it came out the FBI and everyone else was lying and surveilling the president and his supporters illegally using the NSA apparatus. He is as dirty as it comes and I honestly believe both Boasberg and Roberts could probably be impeached for their breach of judicial duties to defend the 4th Amendment by the operation of the FISA court alone.

The number of violations resulting in illegal FISA searches is in the thousands of cases by the nat sec's own admission. From CTH, "Simultaneously, Boasberg did everything he could to fulfill his commitment to Roberts, even appointing Mary McCord, wife of Roberts’ senior staff Sheldon Snook, to be amicus to the (FISA) court. In 1934 Congress gave the ability to write the Rules of the Courts, to the Supreme Court, but also wrote in that they could change, amend, or get rid of any Rule the court wrote, with legislation.

The filibuster is a Senate rule. It only takes a simple majority to change a Senate Rule. Write a rule that on legislation that gets rid of Rules or Regulations written by the Administrative or JUDICIAL branch, it only takes a simple majority for cloture... like on reconciliation bills.

"There’s a lot of law still to be made."

He complained that no statute even made it a specific crime to "storm the Capitol and interfere with certification."

Instead, many pled to "parading or picketing" misdemeanors, charges designed for loud protests — not what he wanted.

Translation: He wanted to invent new crimes after the fact to punish J6 defendants harder — clear judicial bias from the bench

Nope. 67.

But abolishing the DC district courts could happen along with removing their personnel from authority by only 51 votes. See Stuart v. Laird (1802) where Jefferson and Congress did exactly that and Scotus had to reluctantly back it up.

You don't need to impeach, nor defund.... just rewrite the rule, which IS a power the Legislative branch has.

And like I said a couple posts up, write a Senate rule that it only takes a simple majority for cloture on a bill that changes or gets rid of Rules or Regs written by the Administrative or Judicial branch.

175 137 Imagine disbanding the DC circuit Court. It's easy if you try.
Posted by: Chuck Martel

Technically, circuit courts are called that due to old judiciary acts but the appellate court in DC is called the DC Court of Appeals. Right now, the problem rests with federal district courts which are not and never were circuit courts. In the olden days before the 1890's, there were actually circuit courts that heard serious cases as panels that were sort of appellate courts yet also heard original cases as well. The treason trial of Aaron Burr had Justice Marshall sitting as a circuit judge (he was over that circuit on Scotus at the time but justices divided time between hearing cases as a judge and then returning to Scotus season to hear appeals). Marshall presided but sat with a district court judge on the case.

That is why the fedgov after the 1890's judicial reorganization, had three judge district court panels hearing all cases where a law, action, etc. of the fed gov or states was held to be unconstitutional. From about 1900 or so to 1976 when these panels were removed except in the case of election redistricting. Direct appeal to Scotus so no ducking of decision there.

217 whig doesn't SCOTUS (Roberts) have options to expedite this or any other case? Can't they reach down and grab the case and consider it any time they wish? Thus skipping the appeal phase and expediting the entire process? Seems that this option would be the prudent one for Roberts, to "protect the stature and reputation of the court", which is always asserted to be his top concern. And which, if true, he is disastrously incompetent at addressing, since stature and reputation derive from actual results, not the usually vapid or upside-down outcome-driven views of the legal cult or the NYT.

Not necessarily. Anything saving money technically can be put into a reconciliation bill. Then it is the Senate parliamentarian's ruling whether a particular item is germane (primarily govt savings intention versus punishment) as to whether that particular issue can be done under reconciliation or regular rules.

But amusingly, there are no such bars under enhanced recission bills once a spending bill has been passed (such as now with the CR bill). A rescission bill could technically remove all spending from the DC courts changing the status to authorized by law but no funding for it. No filibuster under Senate rules either and no ruling by Senate parliamentarian as there is with reconciliation.

230 Under the 1948 ruling, the only role for the judiciary in the Alien Enemy Act process is reviewing whether individuals are correctly placed in the "class" of those affected by deportation orders, I think. But I've not seen a good explanation of whether this means a court must go through a process - with the individual able to contest the classification, meaning a whole thing for each and every person involved - or if some ex parte process is possible.

He cannot even enforce his own court's ability to prevent leaks from Scotus of a decision, possibly because the leak came from his office or would hurt a lefty judge. I seriously doubt that the Senate would do so even if the House did it (more possible) Technically all spending is budget related so you would have a common situation where the congressional law authorized a DC district courts, etc. but provided no appropriations to actually fund the court's operations.

Stuart v. Laird (1803) was where Marshall had to acquiesce in the Judiciary Act of 1802 removing an entire new district in VA which affected an existing case. Also the 1802 act removed justice of the peace positions setting up Marbury v. Madison decision.

His comments in his dissent to Hamdan v. Bush (Kennedy's tour de force of constitution-shredding usurpation - treaty power - and 1+1 = whatever we say it is) were pretty on-point, acid, and strong. Nonetheless, he has been a key figure in equally ridiculous and destructive rulings (O-care, etc).

Judicial review still allows unconstitutional laws to be implemented, and further often gives them a further seal of approval.

Basically you add one more person to the loop after Congress and the President have agreed the law is constitutional. Since half of the Judicary is left-borg though that does little if it is a leftwing usurpation of the constitution, they'll rule it constitutional by the same left-borg standards used by the President and Congress in passing it.

Yes. The illegals aren't being criminally punished, they are being removed from a country they entered illegally.

This would be no different from a judge arguing that a home invader couldn't be removed from someone else's house until a full court hearing had occurred. Note, I didn't say prosecuted - removed from the house they broke into.

308 Fun fact, the Founders were going to include trial by combat in Art. III until they realized that trial by lawyer was nastier.
Posted by: RedMindBlueState

Recent story.
"A court has rejected a 60-year-old man's attempt to invoke the ancient right to trial by combat, rather than pay a £25 fine for a minor motoring offence.

Leon Humphreys remained adamant yesterday that his right to fight a champion nominated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) was still valid under European human rights legislation. He said it would have been a "reasonable" way to settle the matter.

Magistrates sitting at Bury St Edmunds on Friday had disagreed and instead of accepting his offer to take on a clerk from Swansea with "samurai swords, Ghurka knives or heavy hammers", fined him £200 with £100 costs."

Unfortunately for the plaintiff, England abolished trial by combat formally in 1819 by an act of Parliament.

315 As for judiciary being ultimate safeguard on unconstitutional laws, there is in fact a bit of a dilemma, but it's actually not hard to resolve.

Logically and critically the constitution vested most authority in the accountable ("political") branches, precisely because they were subject to the voters' will. The ultimate guard-rail in our system is supposed to be the voters themselves, not "institutions".

So an unconstitutional law ideally would be dealt with via amendment/repeal driven by voters via Congress and state legislatures.

This doesn't address the yuuuge and vexatious area of "interpretation" by the courts, where they don't rule a law unconstitutional but instead turn it upside down, or turn the constitution upside down to allow a law to stand (Dred Scott, O-care, on and on).

SCOTUS literally wrote the rules, which gives these powers to the lower judges.

Roberts in fact, amended them LAST YEAR... to reign in these Judges, he would have to admit the rulez are wrong... and I don't think he will do that.

376 Legally, it is a writ of mandamus that can issued to a judge by a higher court to correct their attitude. Judges themselves are not immune from civil contempt proceedings including jailing to get their mind right up to 364 (365 in leap years) days in jail.

Can also be referred to DOJ for criminal prosecution of contempt after that.

382 I think it's time for the Administration and Congress to put their heads together and come up with a Judiciary Reform Act to mitigate the problem of nationwide rulings by district courts. Yeah, maybe the Dems can block passage in the Senate, but judicial overreach would have serious consequences in the midterm elections, and it might provide an incentive for the higher Fed courts to do their job.

Posted by: mrp at March 24, 2025 01:37 PM (rj6Yv)

383 1) I'm sure it's been mentioned, but remember when it wasn't just grounds to recuse but for impeachment for Justice Thomas to have taken trips with anyone who ever had any connection no matter how tenuous to potentially pending cases?
How many articles were written by Pro Publica and CREW over that?

2) While DOOM is nice to forecast wrt the SCOTUS, we should keep in mind the vast number of prior rulings that will be overturned by implication or severely threatened if they allow this to stand.
There's a whole lot of caselaw that give the President a whole lot of unrestricted authority. Prior Presidents abdication of that or consent to allow the courts to involve themselves doesn't change that.

386 It should be remembered that Roberts voted in favor of Trump in Hawaii v Trump, the Muslim ban case, that gave him unilateral power over immigration.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Roberts narrowed the grounds and refused to get into justiciability of the act aka standing of a state to sue in the first place (which is contrary to Texas v. PA in 2020). Instead, he focused only on existing statutes while rejecting the left regarding discrimination claims that a president could not bar admittance of people from a country.

Hard to overcome Congress and its power over immigration when it gives the president (and has been exercised in the past) its authority plus his in this case to issue the proclamation. The Court itself gave Congress plenary power and even exhausting state's ability to regulate absent some congressional expression granting states the authority to regulate aka 287(g) of INA. That came about in another Roberts case involving AZ and its attempts to stop illegal immigration in 2010 or so.

Problem is that the Dems in this country are the natural governing party and they have went insane. The GOP since the Great Depression concentrated on making themselves wealthy and the Cold War. When the Cold War ended, so did the GOP purpose so they became pure grifters.

Japan's LDP is sane and the natural governing party of Japan as is the UK was Conservative because Labour was and is insane so people voted Tory simply for protection. In that country too, the Tories as well as the conservative party in Germany simply became less insane than their opposition. And UK has lurched left to the point to where it threatens the country's existence.

Don't want that outcome either.
