Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() One percent of Californians pay well over 50 percent of the state’s income taxes—and is leaving in droves. Power is exorbitant, in part due to inefficient solar/wind/green mandates, restrictions on oil, natural gas, nuclear energy, and new hydroelectric production. In addition, some 4 million—or nearly 25 percent of utility users—simply no longer pay their monthly power bills and are yet usually not subject to cutoffs of power. They in turn must be subsidized by a shrinking number whose rates climb almost yearly. That sounds like a dystopia in the making. And it is, mostly because of the exact policies that Californians have enthusiastically voted for over the last generation. The California of the 60s and 70s is gone. Replaced with a compliant, government-loving populace that seems more like lemmings than entrepreneurs. In the grand scheme, California should be allowed to fail, and the voters (or whoever is actually casting those votes) should suffer the consequences of their stupidity. California going bankrupt would be a huge shock to our financial system, but it would emerge stronger on the other side, and California would be forced into a period of fiscal responsibility that would go a long way to correcting the damage done by the Democrat juggernaut (I count Schwarzenegger as a Democrat) that has controlled California for 25 years. Except... the very policies that California forcefully rejects may very well save it from itself. President Trump is busily repairing the damage done by the Obama/Biden/GOPe junta that was driving the entire country into insolvency and cultural rot. California is fighting Donald Trump and his merry band of cabinet officials at every turn, but they will ultimately prevail, and the economy and culture of California will be saved from its own excesses. Maybe not permanently, because the entire state is built on an unsustainable model, and shifting to a sane government structure will require the pain and suffering of a default and a total re-imagining of the state's relationship with its citizens and its resources. It will be very interesting to observe a temporary resurgence in the Golden State that is entirely the result of MAGA. I wonder how Governor hair gel will explain it away? * They played in my student co-op's dining room. Good show! [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter and X/Twitter] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

It had too many people.
I'm not sure why, but just looking empirically, when you get a large congregation of populace, the voting public becomes very stupid- it votes in short-sighted ways. I'm not sure if it's because people get more selfish and short-sighted when they are surrounded by large numbers of people (and, ironically, lose close connections to people) OR if stupid, short-sighted people are drawn to large congregations of people. Either way, the more populace, the stupider the voting. (BE VERY AFRAID, Florida) Posted by: Formerly Virginian at March 27, 2025 11:11 AM (N1tpc) 21

The whole system of CA is beyond saving as they are one of the few states that can run a deficit and have eagerly done so to the extent they are in a debt trap just like IL.
A GOP governor with a Dem supermajority is basically a eunuch that can change little in that state other than perhaps stave off the fiscal collapse for mebbe 4 years. The endless boards of this and that, the powerful public labor unions, and the lopsided and idiotic court systems along with the plural executive gives a reform governor no chance to fix things. Basically, CA is going to have to crash and crash hard to the extent that it smashes the existing rotten status quo. I think that is pretty much true of the Left Coast. DOGE Finds 10 Swamp Consulting Firms Will Rake in $65 Billion Taxpayer Dollars in “Systemic” Problem
Vaughn then referenced a recent interview in which Trump’s Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, explained how wasteful contractors and consultants have been like boa constrictors in the way they squeeze federal agencies, such as the IRS. She said, “Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the chokehold these consulting firms have on government spending has shocked him the most since he moved to DC and started opening up the books.” Concluding, Vaugh explained how a major issue DOGE has exposed regarding federal spending is that contracts issued to the consultants are based on the time spent by them on a project, not how well they complete it, something that encourages more time to be spent on it, and thus more spending. She said, “The problem is systemic. DOGE saying that these consulting groups write contracts so that they are paid for time, not performance” Posted by: SMOD at March 27, 2025 11:14 AM (RHGPo) 33

Posted by: Martini Farmer They are going to crash unless you get a Dem House Senate and prezzie. To make it more complicated, states cannot declare bankruptcy. So it would be a default where it cannot make its debt payments. A bailout for Cali is a difficult political sell beyond its borders. Once that happens, then essentially lenders quit lending except at nosebleed rates and that in turn necessitates killing the public sector spending on all sorts of gimmedats and government employees including pension plans to get any new lending. What will actually cause CA to stop paying their bills at this point? Posted by: TheJamesMadison ======== The same thing that would happen with the Federal government except no power to inflate the debt away (not able to issue currency). As you get deeper in debt, interest rates rise, if you default, then interest rates for future debt spike to the level that paying it is unsustainable requiring immediate and massive cuts in expenditure--willingly or not. Fed covid easy money bailed out a bunch of rotten fiscally irresponsible states like IL, CA, NJ, etc. for a time but that was a one time deal not likely to be repeated. And that did not fix the systemic problems of these state's problems. The people that should be most scared are state pensioners as they usually get the ax versus cutting spending on current services, etc. IL will probably be the first test of that one. When you start borrowing to pay current bills on things like employee pensions etc., then a state is circling the drain. Posted by: whig at March 27, 2025 11:28 AM (ctrM5) 78

Gavin will make the productive, law-abiding citizens cover it, which stinks, but this is a money is fungible situation. If Gavin did get the money from Trump, he'd go and waste billions more on something else he'd then make the CA citizens pay for. They never stop. Color me skeptical that lifelong leftist politicians/bureaucrats will put together a system to look into/publicize all the stupid things the government spends money on. 43 I wish I could have seen the California of the '60s and '70s. Aside from the glimpses on TV shows, that is. My visit to LA in 2014 was fun, but the waiters in the diner across from the hotel didn't speak English, and there was way too much traffic even on Sunday. And the posted gas prices I saw around town were horrifying even then.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 27, 2025 11:19 AM (J2vNu) ———- The California of my dreams is a great place, almost entirely based on 70s and 80s TV. .. that was a lie. They still hadn't made CalPERS (California Public Employees' Retirement System) whole. Posted by: SMOD That is a massive problem beyond CA's borders. There are quite a few red states with that problem namely KY and MS. Arguably though, these states have more capacity to raise taxes to pay for it. NJ, IL, and CT, probably do not have that ability to raise taxes much to fund pensions without cutting services. At a certain point, raising taxes generates less revenue as productive people flee such a state and you get a spiraling downward effect as you raise and raise taxes to get less and less total revenue which happens when you drive the productive out of your state. Sen. Ted Cruz says that within two weeks after the crash at Reagan National hundreds of commercial aircraft crews received Terminal Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) resolution advisories (RA) of potential mid-air conflicts, some of which required pilots to take evasive action.
As it turns out, these were false RAs created by the Secret Service and the U.S. Navy conducting anti-drone testing at Reagan National using the same frequency spectrum utilized by the TCAS system. Posted by: one hour sober at March 27, 2025 11:15 AM This raises questions to me: mostly, who authorized the testing? Because it is supposed to be cleared/signed off on by both the FAA and the FCC and NOTAMs issued. I'd be very surprised if both of those orgs signed off on conducting that kind of testing in the NCR, especially at that scale. I've always wanted to retire to Hawai'i (Oahu) — my dad was stationed at Hickam from '68–'72. Lived in Waipahu, Wahiwa, while waiting for Base Housing (and Honolulu for about 3 months while waiting to rotate back to the CONUS.) Of course, as a kid you don't see the poverty or crime — especially from base housing. But I loved every minute there.
I finally made it back to the island exactly 50 years after leaving for a vacation. Honolulu/Waikiki were of course way more vertical than they were in '72, and several of the places there that we used to visit in Downtown had transformed into soulless Haole Karen centers (Ala Moana and International Market Place I'm looking at you!), but my old neighborhood in Wahiwa was almost exactly the same as it was when I lived there. Nearly all the houses were still there (except the one we lived in.) The Pali Highway and North Shore were also pretty much the same experience. But it is impossible for an average guy like me to afford to live there now. So I'll just have dreams and memories of my time in paradise.... Posted by: goozer at March 27, 2025 12:32 PM (V1MWf) 302

The avg total utility cost per house per month electirc, gas, water, varies by state. However not by as much as we might think. Avg bills total 347 in Cali, but 307 in TX,Lu are 307 per month.
But Cali median household income it 90K while TX is 10k less. Since the avg house pays 500$ more per year in Cali but has 10k more in income, his argument is pretty underwhelming Posted by: pete at March 27, 2025 01:53 PM (59BGO) 309

267 If you come up to Washington State, it's not getting any better.
------- Took the words out of my mouth. WA and OR are fast becoming CA Redux. The WA Policy Center estimates that we have at least the 5th-worst tax policy in the nation, and it's going to get much, much worse if all these bills get passed. Plus our 2A rights are getting chainsawed. Looking longingly at Idaho... Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at March 27, 2025 02:38 PM (uY1j2) 311
As a SoCal native - exfiltrated (2016) to AZ with my family and salary - who has backpacked in the Sierras for 50 years, SCUBA dived up and down the coast and the Channel Islands, skied and waterside in various CA resorts, rivers and lakes, and camped all over the desert, as well as attended theater and dining across SoCal... the place was a great place to grow up in (b. 1954), but I'd never return there today. And the problem is much deeper than most admit. NOTHING will stop Ds from going as far left as they want as long as they hold the female vote, and as long as abortion is an issue (ie forever) As they KNOW they can't lose this cohort, they will continue marching leftwards and nothing will stop them. It's exactly the same as LBJ on the black vote in 1964: "We'll have the ____ voting for us for a hundred years." And, of course, with female suffrage, you get weaponized empathy - the root of all current social pathologies, from "Oh that poor...." illegal alien, incarcerated thug, fatherless gangbanger, crappy teacher, single mom, etc., and below-replacement fertility... Civilization... OR ... female suffrage... a binary choice... can't have both.
