19 G’morning! The Climate Stabilized!?!?

“Shasta Lake has gone up about 15 feet since March 1, and as of Friday the elevation at the state's largest reservoir was 1,045 feet, 22 feet from the top, according to the California Department of Water Resources.”

[…] “a relative trickle from the record-breaking rain day of Feb. 4, when the rain and runoff flowing into the lake reached 102,213 cubic feet per second, which is the equivalent to 764,553 gallons.”

770k gallons a second.

Shasta is massive and a rise of fifteen feet in twenty days is phenomenal. I think the February 4 date is a few days after the “atmospheric” weather that wrecked parts of Oregon and Western Washington- it rained hard for a few hours in the far northern valley, but the Siskiyou mountains got drenched.

So now Newsom can’t parrot climate change yada yada.

Obviously, this means that we're about to suffer a global flood due to climate change and the only answer is higher taxes, more government regulations, and eating the bugs.

I think one of the Ringworld sequels focused on the active defense system. In the first book there was a mountain called Fist of God that was the result of a major meteor impact. The Ringworld being a thin band of material the meteor went right through.

53 Evening and morning, late toilers and early Sunday risers! Fascinating to see the concept of Dyson spheres and Niven's Ringworld taken up and linked here. Thanks, Pixy!

All I know about "Pink Shoelaces" is that I can faintly remember hearing it on the radio before I started school. And that, when I worked at a radio station in 1977, they had a vast library of oldies dating back decades: singles (and some albums) divided up by category. For some reason PSL was in the "Race" records category, which is what the station had called black-oriented records when that song was new. You have to admit, Dodie's fella in the song sounds like a movie pimp. "Tan shoes with pink shoelaces, a polka-dot vest," and "a pink Panama with a purple hat band"?

55 I have just been down a rabbit hole with Fil from Wings of Pegasus.

Posted by: m at March 23, 2025 05:58 AM (CQE5S)

56 Anyway: odd dreams last night. One about living in an arcology, an artificial indoor city like the one in Niven & Pournelle's Todos Santos in Oath of Fealty, except nobody was allowed to go outside. It was more like General Woundwort's Efrafa.

In a later dream, I was going downtown with my current car, took a curve kinda fast and banged a wheel into a curb (no damage in the dream), and paid to park. Then the first shop I walked into was a bookstore. Copies of a new book *about* Ian Fleming and James Bond were everywhere. The cover, get this, featured a moving image (like the newspaper in Harry Potter) of a man, actor or real person, who supposedly had been the *original* choice for Bond. In my mind he was no Connery or Dalton, but he looked a tough customer. I gotta admit, the book looked fascinating -- but they wanted over fifty dollars for it!!

92 Morning peeps.

When the Blue Angels came to Salinas, CA they'd periodically buzz the Naval Postgrad School near us.

My wife worked there and said they'd be only a dozen feet off the roof of the building she worked in. Several of the pilots were alumni. Probably still are.

97 You don't have to worry about outer system objects whacking the Dyson sphere. Their mass is consumed in the construction and they still come up short. Saw a video just last week where an astrophysicist tried to compare the minimum realistic mass he could devise for a sun enveloping sphere and compared that to the estimated mass of the entire solar system. It wasn't even close to adequate. Larry's Ringworld is more practical in that regard but still requires unobtanium in the form of what he called scrith for the basic structure before you start pouring dirt and water to make up the interior living space.

99 Wolfus, Archie Goodwin’s narratives changed a bit over the course of time - slightly more analytical in later books instead of purely descriptive?

Feel free to slap me down on that.

I started reading Nero Wolfe novels in chronological order. I’ve no favorite book because all of them are favorite books - though Black Mountain is very good.
Posted by: 13times at March 23, 2025

Archie certainly learned from Wolfe. In the earliest books he was a bit of a roughneck who said things like "He don't know." Later he would never have said something like that. And his experience as a detective over decades showed. He would often be right there with Wolfe on basic deduction or analysis; see Murder by the Book, for instance (possibly *my* favorite NW/AG novel).

Wolfe also changed a bit; he talked less and grunted more.

154 This thing happened to me yesterday that I thought Pixy would get a kick out of hearing.

I had just finished watching the movie Prizzi's Honor (I won't spoil anything), and I wanted to see a discussion of the ending of the movie. So I googled "Prizzi's Honor ending", and I looked at Googles AI synopsis of the ending of the movie and I was astounded. Google's AI synopsis of the ending of Prizzi's Honor is wrong. In fact, its like 180 degrees out of phase with the actual ending. I don't think it could get more wrong.

I'm actually kind of fascinated by this. I have no idea how it came to that conclusion. Is there some obscure blog somewhere that incorrectly summarized the movie? I could see someone thinking this was the ending of the movie if they skipped the last ten minutes of the movie. I bet the AI just saw a lot of spoiler-free summaries of the movie and applied the natural "movie conclusion" that you would expect. I wonder if the Google AI will scrape this exact comment and adjust its text lol.

How do I restore the normal, humane and civilized even number of eggs without wasting the odd one?
Posted by: Accomack at March 23, 2025 08:49 AM (oERdd)

Cook an additional two eggs - bringing the total to three. If you're eating them scrambled, just eat them. If you're eating them in some discrete manner, close your eyes when you eat the extra one to avoid disturbing your internal fengshui.

There was a SR-71 based at Kadina AFB when I was detached for a couple of weeks to NAF Okinawa (now Camp Shields) in the late 80s.

Me and a buddy drove around to the Air Force side of the base and were allowed to go (with an escort) into the hangar where it was kept to have a look. There were drip pans on the floor to catch the dripping fuel coming from the onboard tanks, which as normal.

Me? My memory is like an impressionist painting; indistinct, smeary and far from reliable.

183 I've been working on making my old Hazelwood UniQuad (68008 CPU) computer from 1985 work again. Everything seems to be working now except the floppy drive, but the SCSI hard disks it runs on aren't made anymore, so I'm building a SCSI to CompactFlash converter so I'll have a maintainable (and faster) replacement before the drive dies.

196 I believe everything posted was actually very reasonable.
However, think on this, what if you were to create a awesome post title?

I ain't suggesting your content isn't good, but suppose you added a post title that grabbed folk's attention? I mean Daily
Tech News 23 March 2025 is a little plain. You could peek
at Yahoo's home page and watch how they create article titles to grab viewers interested.
You might try adding a video or a pic or two to grab readers interested about what you've got to
say. Just my opinion, it would make your website a little bit more interesting.
