Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread - March 23, 2025 [Doof]![]() Howdy Hordelings! Hope you are having a very nice Sunday here in the early days of Spring. How are your brackets? Did you make sixteen sweet picks? Or perhaps you really just don't care. Whatever your feelings on that, the ONT is here for you to end your weekend. Step on in! Spring has Sprung! The weather may still be cold in your nape of the woods, er uh, neck of the wape. But the calendar says Spring began a few days ago. As such, let's take a look at some Fun and Strange Customs People Follow in Celebration of the Vernal Equinox As the vernal equinox heralds the first day of spring, all across the world, unique phenomena can be seen on this day alone. For thousands of years humans have known that around the day marked on the Gregorian calendar as March 20th (or 21st, but we’ll get into that later) the day and night were of equal measure, and the sun rose perfectly due east, and set perfectly due west. This led to all manner of mythical belief systems, fascinating astronomical calculations, and grand construction projects. Especially for people living in the temperate zones, where seasonal climates are so impactful on daily life, the equinox has a kind of mystique, that can make people take up gardening, read an almanac, or keep an eye out for migratory birds. The equinox is a fascinating event that has captured human minds for thousands of years, and so it’s no surprise there’s a lot to learn about it *** If you believe that the equinox is on the 21st of March, you may be showing your age. The last time the equinox was on the 21st of March, Barack Obama was gunning for the presidency. This is because we use the Gregorian calendar, and the placement of the equinox changes every other century. For those growing up with the equinox on the 21st, you won’t see that again until the 22nd century. These days the equinox arrives on the 20th of March, and there it will stay for all of our lives, and our children’s lives, and most of their children’s lives. It highlights the brilliance of ancient astronomers, who were able to note the subtle differences in the placement of the sun in the sky not just year by year, but century by century; and in the case of the Mayan’s ‘long count’ cycle, millennia by millennia. *** The Burning of the SocksRelated: These 12 Stunning Photos Were Voted Best in the World For Depicting the Essence of Spring (from March 2020) Wholesome Content
One the subject of basketball and wholesome content, this referee deserves a high five AND a fistbump.
![]() With so many great plays in March Madness this week, check out the shot that carried multiple meanings as it sailed into the air, and into the history books this season. It required persistence, resilience, and Faith. Baileigh Sinaman-Daniel, who was born with a right arm too small to adequately use, let her left-handed shot fly from around the three-point line—right into the basket. The Lesley University junior guard, who has an obvious disadvantage compared with her opponents, was cut from her high school team. Yet, there she was, playing guard for the Cambridge, Massachusetts college team against Fitchburg State this season when she rose up and took aim at history. Her shot flew through the air and sailed straight through the net, making her the first female basketball player with only one arm to score in a Division III game. Her coach quickly called a time out. “When the shot went in I thought, ‘Hey, we have to preserve this moment for as long as we possibly can,’” said coach Martin Rather in a recent CNN article. “That also allows the team to come out and embrace her, which they did, on the court, and gives us a second to reflect on the tremendous hard work and dedication it takes to get to that point.” “The entire team was filled with joy,” Baileigh said. “Mainly just because they have seen me overcome so many things throughout this season, and for it to finally pay off in that moment, in that game, it was a very big deal for everybody across the board. They were all screaming. Everybody came to hug me.” ![]() Usha is wearing a strapless Oscar de la Renta velvet noir dress. She looks stunning. She is letting the crystal flower embellishments be the star and forgoing jewelry except for small diamond stud earrings. I think she could have gone a little bolder with her earrings, or maybe a chocker, but she didn’t call to ask. 😀 And now for practical- Usha Vance has worn a few pieces that are ready to wear, showing you can look pulled together and not need to spend thousands to do it. Will this practicality continue when you have someone like Melania to emulate? I wonder…. Most recently, Usha wore a navy Veronica Beard blazer when entertaining the Irish Taoiseach. She paired this with ankle length teal pants that had been hanging in her closet, and navy pumps she also had already. ![]() In another example, Usha wore a Ted Baker ready to wear Bislee Chatsworth Floral belted dress. Again, she has chosen not to wear jewelry – this is the space I believe we will see growth as this dress calls for a statement necklace. ![]() It is possible Usha just isn’t a jewelry fan – luckily she has the perfect mentor in Melania on how to accessorize in other ways. Melania is wearing a Dior belted blazer in wool tweed along with a matching Dior Christina pencil skirt. The scarf is removable and added by Melania. ![]() Speaking of Dior, let’s look at this amazing vintage dress from 1953. The purple, the rouleaux bows at the shoulder, the neckline. It’s an embodiment of the era. ![]() In the same vein, this Sonnet Dress by Dior is *chefs kiss*. It is in black silk ottoman and from Dior’s 1953 Profilee line. It has silk piping and the rouleaux bows show up again. The model demonstrates how the right jewelry can be the icing to the dress. ![]() Finally, shoes. These are vintage Roger Vivier for Dior (c. 1958-1960). Swoon! ![]() (from thisdayinmusic.com) Born on this day in 1944: American singer, songwriter, musician, producer Ric Ocasek from The Cars. 1956: Elvis Presley released his self-titled debut album on the RCA Victor label. Its 12 songs were recorded in Nashville, New York, and Memphis between 1954 and 1956 and included one of Elvis’ most iconic numbers, “Blue Suede Shoes.” The album, which spent ten weeks at No.1 on the US album charts and went on to sell a million copies, marked the first time a rock‘n’roll record had topped the charts. 1991: R.E.M. topped the UK chart for the first time with their seventh album, Out Of Time. The Grammy-winning LP, which spent a total of 153 weeks on the UK chart, would hit No.1 in the US several weeks later Not music, but bonus "this date in history" content. Gretzky ended his career with 894 goals. Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals now has 888 career goals. There's a strong possibility he will break Gretzky's record before the end of the season (12 more games). ![]() ![]() Comments, questions, suggestions, or emotional outbursts? Piper: Thank you for the dress pron. I really enjoy seeing the changing styles accompanied shades of color. Usha does very well for herself considering she doesn't have nearly the clothing allowance Melania has. I especially liked the dress Usha wore for inauguration night. The trim on her neckline was simply beautiful. What a pleasure to have two women who make an honest try to display their pleasure in representing our country. No left over sofa fabric for either.

"I question why for the first time in American history a president has won every swing state. And is also best friends, and his largest donor, was a man who owns and runs the Internet. So, I would hope that would be investigated and that we would see that whether or not it was an anomaly or something else that happened on election night in America when kalama harris was filling up stadiums with people who supported her and Donald Trump was not able to do that. Um, so it's curious to me. And as an American and a believer in democracy I would hope we would be able to look at all of the reasons...this happened...in our country." Only said that he had a serious situation on Tuesday, and as a result will have to have a tube inserted thru his abdomen into his stomach - all food, liquids and medications will administered thru the tube. He did say he had a feeding tube about 20yrs ago, so obviously there is some unresolved medical issue.

GPS DATA EXPOSES ASTROTURFING AT DENVER BERNIE-AOC RALLY That massive Bernie Sanders and AOC rally in Denver? Turns out it wasn’t as “grassroots” as advertised. Despite claims of 34,000 attendees, GPS data analysis reveals the real number was closer to 20,000—still big, but not record-breaking. More revealing? A whopping 84% of those devices had shown up at nine or more other protests, including Antifa/BLM events, pro-Hamas and pro-Palestinian demonstrations, and Kamala Harris campaign stops. Over 30% had attended twenty or more. Data analysts say the crowd was anything but organic—the majority were tied to activist networks like Disruption Project, Indivisible, Democratic Socialists of America, Rise & Resist, and Troublemakers—all reportedly funded by ActBlue and some receiving backing via USAID. Optics over authenticity. The playbook hasn’t changed—just the targets. Two YouTube channels that I used to enjoy scratched off my list this past week. Sweet guy who can't cook tries to cook. (Actually, over the years, he's gotten pretty good, but that was his original schtick and it still works.) Turns out he's a touchy Canadian and he had to start off a vid with a bunch of anti-Trump bs... Unsubscribed. Then a sweet tubby gay guy (I don't care) who's crazy over authentic 18th-century clothing and sews and wears a lot of it. Turns out it's a female tranny -- a woman who got a hysterectomy etc and goes by he/him. Ugh, I loved this character as a cute, eccentric fag, just flummoxed by it as a girl who pretends to be an effeminate 18th-century gentleman. And then, a few days later, I flipped the switch (out of habit, of course, because I *knew* the light wouldn't work) and it came on! Turns out that one of the kitchen outlets was cracked. I know it didn't really hit me that I was done until I handed my boss my office key, and realized I could now only enter the building if I was invited. It was kind of like turning into a vampire. Hospitals can kill you.
Prayers are much better. I am stuck in a hospital in the Boston area for the 8th straight day and are starting to look like a Concentration Camp survivor. This is brutal and if there's anyone who could say a prayer for me, I would be eternally grateful. Prayers carry a great deal of power, I'm not as sure about modern medicine... A very early middle-of-the-night morning to all you insomaniacals, as I woke up (thanks to a certain large black cat knocking something off my desk) almost ninety minutes early. I'm having some coffee, sipped a bit of pineapple juice -- I felt a bit hungry! -- and am hanging out until time to go for my workout. Who's up?

Somebody tell Piper, if she hasn't been told already, that her dress pieces are wonderfully reminiscent of Oregon Muse's on his Chess/Dress threads on Saturday evenings long ago.
Stirling the black cat mentioned above has been extra affectionate lately -- he curled up in my lap no less than five times yesterday, and started off the day doing that just now. In contrast, little Dagny is still aloof. She's going to visit with Linda for a few days and we'll see if she perks up, or if she needs to see the vet. She acts as if she's waiting for Her Real Human to come back and take her home. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 24, 2025 02:47 AM (omVj0) 438

Posted by: tcn in AK at March 24, 2025 *** Me too! Well, maybe I might have to go in on Monday 3/31 to finish out the month. In any case, congratulations! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 24, 2025 02:48 AM (omVj0) 439

This is the DOJ's Chief of Staff:
Chad Mizelle @ChadMizelle47 6h This week, we are giving the Supreme Court another chance to reverse many of these injunctions. Time for the Court to act to stop lawless injunctions. Sounds like a subtle threat. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at March 24, 2025 02:55 AM (TfEf8) 441
Time for an early episode of The Fugitive on MeTV with Lois Nettleton. She was kind of like the Julie Harris of TV.

Mornin' Wolfus! Congrats to you as well. Posted by: JQ at March 24, 2025 *** Good morning, JQ, We've been interviewing candidates for my job all last week, and will have two more this week. They'll be without an office manager for a week at this rate. Well, I gave em plenty of notice. How are you, and your hubby? Big news in NYS. Hopefully, many people won't have to die now. Hochul didn't get away with it this time:

LOL, Wolfus! Yes, you gave plenty of notice. After the end of this month(?): No new manager? = Not. Your. Problem.
Right? Hubby is well enough. Getting around better with repaired hip.... still fussy and agitated sometimes. New med is helping. I'm almost ready for a rubber room, but that's nothing new ![]() Posted by: JQ at March 24, 2025 03:09 AM (rdVOm) 445

I'm almost ready for a rubber room, but that's nothing new Posted by: JQ at March 24, 2025 *** Glad to hear the meds are helping out. Yes, I gave 'em over a month's notice, but my boss delayed because of Mawdi Graw. Not that he cares about it, but I guess he figured nobody would get serious about applying for a job until it was over. So now they are running behind. I'll finish up the budget this week, I hope, and pack all my stuff. Have lunch with a former co-worker. But most of the people I've known at my employer are all gone, retired or moved on, so there are few I have to say goodbye to. My successor at my old job, but otherwise, not many. Kinda sad when there's no real *party* to be had, for one's retirement, Wolfus... But it's all good, ya know.
I "retired" suddenly, after running out of fmla, pto, and unpaid loa-- would've gotten fired anyway after a year's time off-- so I said "I retire" and *poof* gone, but no hard feelings either way. Just a cog in the production machine, so no biggie to replace me, a lowly, hourly, sweat-hog LOL. Posted by: JQ at March 24, 2025 03:23 AM (rdVOm) 448
Happy soon to be freedom day! I had threatened, discussed, debated for some bit of time before I said I'll cover one more vacation week before I hang up my spurs. Somehow, they survived.

I'll retire about 3 years after I'm dead.

Hi, Puddleglum!
I never saw Rush in concert. Sad. Lots of bands I woulda loved to see... but didn't have $ and time off at the same time, or whatever. (And I now have hearing problems *anyway*! Unfair!) Retirement is a luxury I could not afford, but did it anyhow. Meh. Come what may. Posted by: JQ at March 24, 2025 03:57 AM (rdVOm) 451
Decided to stop lurking and participate in person. Thanks Doof for the email exchange, and for the song now stuck in my head!
