Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Music ThreadThe first concert The Fabulous and I attended was Robin Trower at the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay. I don't recall an opening act. And to be honest don't remember much about the venue. Those were the days of Festival Seating. When you are young and arrive early you can run to the front and hopefully not get stomped to death. I won't bore you with all of the concerts we have seen. And we have seen some great acts at some downright terrible venues. One of the worst venues I have ever been at is Alpine Valley Music Theater outside of East Troy. Had I owned Alpine Valley, it would have been a premier place to attend a concert. Similar to Red Rocks in Colorado. I don't know what it is like now. They don't book too many shows anymore. And I haven't been there in years. Looking at their website, they may have paved and installed lighting in their Now that The Fab & I are 29, we no longer go to concerts with festival seating. We really enjoy seeing bands at venues specifically built for live performances, such at The Orpehum Theater, State Theater in Minneapolis, Grand Theater, Wausau, WI and other such joints that fit up to 2,500 people or so. Nope, I have no desire to see anyone or any band at places that feature festival seating or seat more than 2,500-3,000 patrons. So I guess I won't be going to any Rolling Stones or Taylor Swift concerts. And I'm perfectly OK with that. So if you are a concert attendee, what are some of your best and worst venues. And just because your little brother puked on your shoes doesn't mean it was a bad venue. Just a bad little brother. So you don't attend concerts but enjoy music. Do you enjoy One Hit Wonders? Do you enjoy ear worms? Now I have this in my head, Eeeee Gadz. Sometimes one learns about these things listening to Mike Harvey's Super Gold. Best Venue / Performance Suzy Boguss at the Venue, 2019 Braselton GA. 1000 people, good acoustics that showcased a fabulous performer.
Honorable mention Ithaca college gymnasium, 1976 Yes Special shout out to stacks of loudspeakers in the tiny gym. We climbed the bleachers into the rafters to get a good look at the stage. Couldn't hear for two days after. Worst Venue Wild Bill's Gwinett Ga 2014 A bar with a stage. Drunken idiots pushing and shoving. Huh.
Always thought Robin Trower handled the vocals himself, but I am comparatively new to the blues… Thought the blues were Zeppelin’s first album, and then Cindarella’s Long Cold Winter. I’ve advanced! Stevie Ray Vaughn kicks ass, and I rented an album from iTunes from Alligator Records, with a ton of all sorts of blues artists. Went looking for “Ice Cream in Hell”, bought (rented) it, one got the whole thing for another 6 bucks or so. Worth checking out. But back before I was 29, it was all rock and roll. The 80s LA scene was the best! Before grunge chocked it out to death. Grrrr. Lots of great bands just had no oxygen to thrive in the ‘90s. XYZ is probably the best example of this. Spent some time in Lancaster County (Pennsylvania) in my formative years. At the time, all the well known musicians were using a well known studio in Lititz, PA to record their albums. I'd heard about this, but just considered it a novelty until:
One night at a dive bar in Lancaster, PA that seated maybe about 40 people if they wanted to push the fire code I stopped in with a date for an after dinner libation. We had a table, minding our own business when the concert started. The bar had live local bands on weekends. That night they had Cindi Lauper, The Hooters, The Producers, and finished off by Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers. Oh yeah, no cover. Just some known bands at the time trying out some new live music. Posted by: Orson at March 22, 2025 07:55 PM (dIske) 37

I liked the Black Cat in DC, because there was an upstairs balcony. No seating, and the last concert I saw there I was 6 mos. pregnant. Still, but I'd likely hate it now. Coolest venue was a small Sunday concert at the Phillips museum. Honestly enjoyed every venue in Boston and burbs - The Middle East, Paradise, Orpheum, or even just an Irish band at a pub. All good. I lived in the Beach Cities part of LA (Hermosa, Redondo, Manhattan) during my early 20's, working at a record store that was a Ticketmaster outlet. I managed to score tix to a lot of concerts back then - mostly hair metal stuff, since that was what I was listening to (KISS, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, the Metallica/GnR Rose Bowl concert, and so forth).
Oddly enough, I've got tinnitus now... The concert from back then that really stuck with me was Ofra Haza playing at a venue at UCLA. I had fallen in love with her voice. Seeing her live was transcendent. I miss her. Posted by: CSinKS at March 22, 2025 08:05 PM (VBzjB) 59

I’m a Pink Floyd super fan. Have loved them since I was 13.
Saw The Wall. Incredible… Saw a Roger Waters solo show. Great, and faithful to the Pink Floyd sound, but the constantTrump bashing made me leave early. The dude is mental… Saw a PF tribute band last year. Absolutely incredible! They are coming back in June and I snatched up 4 front-row seats immediately at a great venue. Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. Can’t wait, notwithstanding the comment about not spending enough Money to see the real thing. The Floyed, they’re named, and I think they are out of Reno. Sept 1971 was my first concert to go to as a concert. It was free. Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids. A bit hinky but a lot of fun.

My late friend and neighbor Dorothy had what I consider the best concert story. She was at a Duke Ellington show in St Petersburg, FL . As the show starts and Duke comes strutting down the aisle toward the stage he recognizes her from a show she attended at the Blue Note in Chicago. That's a whole nother story, but he stops and points to her. "You're the jazz enthusiast from Sweden!"
He gets to the stage and has a word with someone. Next thing you know, an usher approaches Dorothy and says, "Mr. Ellington would like you up front", and proceeds to escort her from the back to the edge of the stage. Once he was satisfied she was comfortably seated, he started the show. Posted by: Joe Kidd at March 22, 2025 08:35 PM (bA75n) 92

Next night, asshole bikers came in trying to charge everyone $30 to camp on the golf course. Nearly everyone just vacated to an adjacent parking lot. I slept on gravel in a thin sleeping bag the second night. Fucking asshole bikers Posted by: ghost of hallelujah at March 22, 2025 08:39 PM (sJHOI) 95
I'm still trying to get my head around Ministry. The band - well, the Cuban refugee frontman - who gained artistic integrity, at the cost of his political integrity.
"Republicans are bad" is integrity of a sort, I guess, but it's hard to square an anthem like "NWO" in one Administration with shilling for global action on The Climate in another Administration. Also trying to figure out if they'd have been better off sticking with synth pop. Posted by: gKWVE at March 22, 2025 08:41 PM (gKWVE) 96

Hollywood need to understand that anyone about 50 or younger knows how to sail the high seas. So they have to convince people, not to watch their crap, but to pay for it.
Same goes double for music. If they produce some movie with an unlikeable slate of actors and an asshole director, increasingly the money isn't going to come. Posted by: gKWVE at March 22, 2025 08:48 PM (gKWVE) 103

Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at March 22, 2025 08:51 PM (h7ZuX) I think the one I'm remembering most was the north loc, although I don't recall it being north of Lane. It was called 'Stache and Little Bros, but we all called it 'Stache's'. Had a low ceiling with a low stage, maybe 4 -6in. higher than the floor. The later location was kinda between south campus and Short North and the building kinda seemed like it was once a bank. That loc had a higher stage and higher ceiling. I saw Gillian Welch and Drive-By Truckers at that one. Both were great, but I preferred the earlier (original) location and saw more shows there. The original owner, Dan Dougan, was a big Pittsburgh Pirates fan and had a band for a while named after Roberto Clemente, his sports hero. Bonnaroo is my favorite big multiday setting. You might see someone multiple times so less likely to be a douche, unlike Lollapalooza where single day people don't give a crap about being nice, they are gone at 11. Worst? Have never had a bad experience with live music. It is like it resonates with my soul and all it good with the world. Even without any chemical enhancements.
