The Ace of Spades Pet Thread

IMG_0664 (1).JPG

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Miss KT is absent today and yours truly is attempting to fill in. Tough shoes to step into. But, let's give it a whirl. Let's talk about anything pet and/or animal related. And by all means let's keep the politics and current events out at the curb.

*****

Our society continues to roll off the rails. Woman drowns her dog for strictly convenience sake.

OK, you can talk about this one.

I rate the following Meme as True

Hopefully Miss KT will be back tanned, rested and ready to serve you up some fine pet and/or animal content.

Have a great week!

21 If anyone has an elderly moggy who has chronic constipation issues, according to a British veterinarian, you can give the cat 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of powdered unflavored Miralax mixed in something like a Squeeze up. This is safe because it is just a stool softener.

I had taken my moggy to the Animal Hospital on two occasions where she went through total panic and several enemas, and then I saw this tip online, and it has worked like a charm ever since.

Here endeth the public service announcement!

35 Why is it a problem when people shoot others for hurting their pets, when shooting a k-9 unit is the equivalent of shooting a police officer? Counterpoint: cops ALWAYS shoot the dogs,, so perhaps this increases prosecution of triggerhappy cops?

Also, per the left, all slavery is bad, anf all slaves, especially the oppressed underclasses, should revolt and kill their masters. BUT killing a criminal who is stealing property is wrong--even though the years of compensation/work required to purchase that property are all sacrificed to the unpunished criminals leftism defends and creates. 40 Oh YES to the top meme. Especially here, and with my mutt but probably almost everywhere nowadays and regardless of breed, its a good assumption that someone stealing a dog is involved in illegal dog fighting. Not likely that they are stealing the dog to sell it to some loving family and I've always felt like yes I would kill to stop someone torturing any dog, cat or horse of mine or even after the fact to save the next critter.

44 I just added FINALLY send in pictures to the Pet thread.

Our, well my, dog Ralphy used to stay with my late mother ALL THE TIME! He sleeps with me in the room and stays with me at night. But during the day, he enjoys sleeping by the toilet on the rug there which make me kind of sad.

I brought his blankets here. Nothing. He probably likes the cold and the occasional humming.

How is the cat sharing working out??!!?

Very well. Snowflake and Trumpy come into the house around 11:30 every morning, look around and go to sleep. This week, it's on the guest bedroom bed. They sleep for close to 5 hours, come down and if they are zoomy, they get put outside until the next morning.

My friends handle food and water. Because they are outdoor cats, I did get them Advantage for fleas. They hang around the house a lot peering into wimdows but when they stayed here for 4 months, I learned their schedule.

This has been working out nicely.

Outdoor cats, still worry about them though.

69 Afternoon, Animal Folk,

The first Pet Thread of spring, hey? Or fall, for Pixy in AU.

The Killer Kittens From Outer Space are doing well. We treated them with one of the topical flea killers about a week ago, and it has reduced their scratching and the little flea-bite crusts on their skin under their fur. At least it's obvious for Stirling the big black. Little gray Dagny La Siberienne, I'm not so sure, but when I pet and scratch her neck and head the welts seem fewer. Or maybe I'm just tellilng myself that.

She is still an aloof little female. You have to go to her for petting. She likes it, she rolls on her back and loves belly scratching, but she still is not one to come to you. She's enthusiastic about meals, but not otherwise very sociable. Oh, well.

Any law will eventually comes down to is it important enuf to lose ur life if u break it. Which is why you should limit laws to the absolutely necessary ones. Anything from jaywalking or running a red light to selling untaxed cigs to assault with a deadly weapon either starts out involving risk of death or can be escalated to that by resistance.

85 "A house cheetah" made me think. People have done some odd things with cat breeding in the last hundred years or more. Siamese, Persians -- though you can still adopt "traditional" Siamese who don't look like anorexic, masked fashion models, and "doll-faced" Persians who do not look as if they ran face-first into a wall. There's the Mau, the Bengal, the Himalayan (crossbreed of Siamese and Persian), and cats with curly coats. And the Sphinx (shudder).

Most of the results of cat tinkering still look very much like the ancestral wild cat or like tiny versions of tigers and lions. While with dogs -- An alien arrived here would think a Chihuahua or a bulldog was *not* the same species as the wolf!

My suggestion: a housecat who looks like the snow leopard! Perhaps not with as long a tail, but one with a pale but spotted coat and thick plushy fur. Or one that looks like the Pallas's cat, with a broad face and low rounded ears.

I'd read about Pallas's cats in the encyclopedia as a kid, and had never seen a real one on film on in life. Then, in '21, we visited the Birmingham (AL) zoo. They had several in a rocky, glassed-in enclosure. They are larger than I thought they'd be, though smaller than a bobcat, and they look wild but not terribly fierce, with rather cute faces.

I suppose, at our current level of genetic knowledge, to achieve a domestic version of one would require a crossbreeding program. And the results would still be more wild than not for quite a few generations. Unlike with dogs, our regular housecats are still part-wild even after 3000 years or more.

Keep us informed. It's nice to know outdoor cats can live to be 8 years old. I did my best to turn these 2 into indoor cats but outside always beckoned, even in very cold Canadian winter.

108 Actually, you all reminded me that I actually was involved in a dog theft!!

My late mother who was a nun for 14 years married my father and came to Canada to teach. She was dear friends with the secretary at the school.

The secretary lived next door or close by to a house where in the backyard was a small pen with a caged up dog that would bark day and night.

They were determined to rescue it. For some reason, I was brought along even though I was barely ten years old.

I remember us silently pulling up in the alley, them getting the dog, putting it in the car and driving off. The poor thing was terrified, matter up. Miserable.

It was cleaned up over the next few days and brought out to a farm to live with another of my mother's teacher friends where it had a very happy, long life.

122 Up all night with a dying 16yo setter...he is still hanging on. Barely. I try to tell him it is ok to let go, that the birds hold at point, rabbits are slower, and squirrels cannot climb trees where he is going....All of his other dog friends are already there waiting for him, and that I will be along to meet him there before to long as well. The only thing sadder than the fact that we all outlive our dogs, is considering what it would be like for them if it was the other way around. They are a big part of our lives...but WE are the entirety of theirs. This will be the first time since I was Toddler that we didn't have a dog and a replacement already being trained up, and will have NO dog for the 1st time in my life... But with caring for my 95yo Father, and my own cancer treatments, I'm not going to get another right away. Perhaps never. It is a watershed moment.
