Saturday Night Jokes A new monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to help the other monks in copying the old texts by hand. He notices, however, that they are copying from copies, not the original manuscripts. So, the new monk goes to the head monk to ask him about this. Used to make them at home with Vernors and key lime juice. Any empty glass pint jar will work as long as it is clean and chilled in the fridge. No green sprigs though, whatever they are.
I do have brass mugs for them. But why bother.

RIP our neighbor Bob, died around 6:30pm today. In his 90s, been in failing health for a while, got much worse this week.
Hard to describe what Bob has meant to our family. He and his wife raised their kids here, ran cattle, helped maintain the living area. He had worked for my father and my grandfather. My late older brother once described Bob as "the strongest man I ever knew." In many ways! It was hard watching is mind and body falter in recent years. He was about as close to a grandfather as our kids ever had.
Father of three, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be missed beyond description.

There were more rules. You couldn't use vehicles or weapons etc There were I think two solid days of drinking as warm up perhaps more.
It was a blast and ridiculous. Most there were so non-athletic it was totally safe hahahah. There was little mass and little acceleration happening so the force was approx a pillow fight.
The Salamis thing was before or after my time. I wasn't ain't going in that water for nothing no how anyway.

The single, huge ice cube is fun, I’ll admit. And it lasts so long! Good when you want to drag a drink out. On the first cocktail, I’m turning in a glass containing nothing more than a mostly-intact huge ice cube. By the third drink, I’m letting it melt, sipping off the bourbon-infused meltwater along the way.
As for rye: it’s fine, but I don’t like the idea of letting the rye and spelt people getting wind that I’m enjoying one of their products. We were strictly a wheat-corn-soy family when I was growing up.

💩 as an Unicode emoji has a special meaning or me. It is one of the oldest 4-byte Unicode code point emojis. At the time, circa 2008 slash 2009, the Unicode consortium was producing emoji far faster than renderers could keep up with.
At Amazon - yes, THAT Amazon dot com - we were still adjusting to the idea that Unicode was not equivalent to ASCII or even that newfangled Java UTF-16 which meant that we had to adjust everything to a hypothetical future wherein UTF-8 extended far beyond the standard ASCII.
And I was in charge of this particular scope for Amazon search page. And what did I pick for my unit testing case all the way back then, even though there was no such thing as an emoji?

I have no idea why the Unicode consortium made poo a thing so early on. There was no such thing as an "emoji" back then. But it holds a special place in my heart for unit testing against 4-byte UTF-8 stress testing

I resisted paying any attention to Unicode for a long time. Characters more than a byte? Are you kidding me?
Then I made myself get into it. The big thing with me, the thing that made it click was to understand the difference between Unicode, the "code points", and the glyph/grapheme they represent, and the *encoding* of those numbers into a stream of bytes. Realizing that is when it clicked.
And then I immediately saw how the UTF-8 encoding scheme (invented by Ken Thompson, BTW, on the back of napkin in 1992) was superior.
Any 7-bit ASCII text is valid UTF-8. Thus live in ASCII, let it be UTF-8 if you want to call it that. You only have to worry if you want to go beyond into the multi-byte characters. Which I won't.

Microsoft was responsible for the confusion between Unicode proper and the encoding, because they called UTF-16 (two bytes per "chunk", wide characters) "Unicode".
But even then, the full Unicode is going to require more than one 16-bit UTF-16 wide character, it's sort of multi-word itself.
Windows will spit out some text files in UTF-16. The editors I have understand that thankfully, but it's quite a shock when you realize the "text" file is not ASCII but UTF-16. And then you've got big endian and little endian to worry about and that just pissed me off.
A lot of log files it can spit out are UTF-16. UTF-8 seems to be they way it's going, but UTF-16 was built into NT from the get-go, and it will remain inside.

Mom & Dad took us on long trips to see grandparents every summer, and one Big Trip to see great-grands when we were very little. I kinda remember parts of it. We went from Spokane to Oklahoma City. (by car, of course) and stopped at all kinds of places along the way.

Our poor lawn service guys spent the better part of a day planting everything a few weeks ago, and even more bulbs and plants keep coming in, according to their growing schedule. Irises and Hostas were planted last week, along with Lilies and Clematis vines. I am expecting some Gladiolus bulbs in the next few weeks, as well as a couple of rosebushes
I wanted to have pretty things to look at, and everything is very pretty right now!

Yeah, fambly trips were da bomb. We saw Jellystone, the Cody museum, Grand Canyon, all on the Big Trip. Probably other stuff, but I was only 3. It was around 4th of July, so fireworks too!
The bestest part, was g-grampa's ranch. Horses, chickens, cats & dogs, longhorn cattle, fireflies, and the Storm Cellar (double doors flat on the ground)

Fun nostalgia. I spent several days at Expo '74. Dad played some trumpet at a few events. Grandparents on both sides were there. Nash Rambler rides downtown. Tons of memories. I've been noodling on doing a Tuesday post on World Fairs.

When I was growing up in Spokane (60's & 70's), what is now defined as the Spokane Metro area, basically the I90 corridor from Airway Heights to Coeur d'Alene , was roughly 275k. In 2022, the population was roughly 920k. Spokane's biggest problem has always been its identity crisis. It wants to be Seattle, but it's always about a decade behind.

The carousel at Riverfront Park, came from Natatorium Park... Parents took us to Nat Park often when we were little. Shame when it closed; we cried.
I remember Dad lifting me up to try for rings as we rode that carousel. Precious memories!

I grew up there a decade later (70's and 80's). In the valley. Went through there 3 years ago - first time since the late 90's and it was a different place. Ron's and Dick's drive ins were still there, so not all was lost.

I try not to highlight the sins of my yewt. We had a discussion awhile back. I graduated from U-High but I attended CV briefly after U-High asked me to leave. I got back into U-High because of an amazing teacher/counselor there. He told my mother, your son should be a Merit scholar candidate but instead he's a candidate for Spokane County jail.
