I have moved from Shostakovich back to where I belong: Tchaikovsky.
Tchaikovsky's violin concerto is, in my opinion, one of the most spectacular pieces ever made. It was panned - even hated - in its own time and Tchaikovsky wrote little for the violin after his concerto was so negatively received. I think that's tragic because I really adore the piece. The hands-down best performance of it I have ever heard was made by a fellow called David Oistrach, a Soviet violinist. He performed it in Dresden in 1954. It must have been surreal listening to such a stupendous performance of this kind of music in a war-torn city in the heart of the GDR, played an artist from the imperial capital on purloined instruments. If you like orchestral music, or the violin, or Tchaikovsky, give it a listen. https://youtu.be/Y_BOxAEs5rg Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 18, 2025 07:48 PM (kBSKe) 16

Those Kennedy files are a serious rabbit hole that's easy to get lost within. There's a whole section on Alpha 66 (para-military anti-Castro org. that set up in the US, was training down in Mexico). The CIA was using a free lance journalist named Johnny O'Donnell to spy on them...and apparently they are still active today down in Florida.
The bizarre thing is that Johnny O'Donnell passed away in Sept. of last year. I just read his obituary put together by his family. Former Marine, some of the stories he wrote....but absolutely nothing about his spying on Alpha 66 for the govt. despite a multitude of contacts. That family is going to be surprised to see their patriarch showing up in the Kennedy files. Posted by: Orson at March 18, 2025 08:26 PM (dIske) 117

Because it might make Trump look good ??? Posted by: Buster Hymand at March 18, 2025 08:28 PM (A2iSa) ++++ I don't think so. Launches - especially manned launches - are expensive, dangerous and difficult to coordinate. Their ride up couldn't bring them down, so they got to join the ISS crew until the next scheduled turnover. A special mission to go get them would have introduced significant optional risks given that they were safely aboard the ISS. It sucks that their trip suddenly jumped from a few days to several months, but I don't think the decision to leave them there was political so much as it was practical. They were safe, the return craft was an unknown and the next mission was already penciled in. The political move would have been for Biden to tell Musk to get on the stick and go get them back home ASAP, damn the expense, and then played it for tremendous political gain. That's the play Trump probably would have made. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 18, 2025 08:34 PM (kBSKe) 146

Muldoon - Part 1 - Consider for a few moments the heart of a human baby. It is a few ounces of muscle, fat and connective tissue that has a rhythmic, self-sustaining electrical system. It consists of two separate but remarkably similar pumps, the right and left sides of the heart. It is fully formed by the 8th week of gestation, and continues to beat rhythmically, steadily and continuously for up to 100 years, without any outside help in the vast majority of instances. The stunning symmetry of the microscopic arrangement of myosin and actin protein fibers creates a highly efficient pumping machine. The delicate and yet durable valves regulate the direction of blood flow through the veins and arteries. Consider the simple mechanical elegance of this one single organ.
And then ask yourself one question... Is there any conceivable way that this was the result of a slimy puddle of primordial goo randomly organizing with this heart as the accidental (natural selection) result? What has always bothered me is that any precursor organs would fail and, unless the present organ was conceived as a whole, the organ would fail. What is the rate? What is the mechanism? How does an animal without wings grow them? If it's a mutation, than how does it repeat and form a functional limb? Genetic Entropy is real. It is observable and can be measured. Destruction mutations are legion, its profoundly rare to ever have a beneficial mutation. Every post you’ve made on this topic shows a stunning ignorance of what the various hypotheses actually say. You seem stuck on the idea that just because your worldview requires magic, that everyone else’s does as well. You assume that evolution must produce fully-formed organisms in 6 days because that’s what your mystical, incoherent and contradictory tome stipulates.

There are two versions of many things in the OT, most especially the 1st and 2nd Kings is doubled up by 1st and 2nd Chronicles. Probable reason is a bit of history - recall how David and Solomon’s Kingdom split up into the kingdoms of Israel and Judah? Each Capitol, Jerusalem and Samaria, had its own version of their history and Holy writings. After everything fell and the survivors were carried off to Babylon, the scholars set to work rewriting and unifying all that survived; but the work they did still bears evidence of the 2 sources from which it was crafted.
And while we’re in the topic, the Book of Job probably wasn’t a Jewish writing at all, but much older. Maybe even Sumerian. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 18, 2025 09:20 PM (T+ixL) 341

Posted by: Bulg at March 18, 2025 09:09 PM (77rzZ) Zoologists are starting to dislike the term "species" and like to work around it since there is not nearly as much contrast between species, and far too much contrast within species to make a solid definition possible. They are starting to like "clades" better, but they still are unhappy, and the concept of "crown" species is making them run around in circles and write odd papers at each other. personally I think it has to do more with how "species" breed, and how the select mates, but I am a lowly BA in a liberal arts so no one pays attention to me. with CRISPR tech we are going to wind up completely divorced with species, and we may wind up looking a something like "Cell Line" or "germ line" to keep the books straight. Why did all the miracles stop? The Bible is full of miracle stories. There are plenty of species on Earth, right now, that have “partial eyes.” As for your question: the ability to detect light—at all—is a benefit over not being able to detect it. Plants can detect light, for example. Increasing resolution of light detection is also obviously useful. In the land of blind species, even a “partial eye” makes you a king. Come on, try harder. Never once does the Bible say the earth is 5,000 years old. That claim comes from some 17th century English Bishop named Usher, nothing more. It’s bizarre how people get stuck on that.
And as to “7 days”; it’s my understanding that the word translated as “day” can just as easily mean “period” or “era”. What I find significant is that the order or creation is essentially correct. Zoologists are starting to dislike the term "species" and like to work around it since there is not nearly as much contrast between species, and far too much contrast within species to make a solid definition possible.
Posted by: Tom Servo at March 18, 2025 09:20 PM (T+ixL) --- One thing I find fascinating is how the various religions seem to be describing the same stuff albeit from different perspectives. I've been digging into this more and ore, and it's uncanny. There really isn't any conflict between Greek or Babylonian myths and the Bible, it's just who is telling the story. God is unique, however, insofar as He is limitless, while the other pantheons are not. They have sharply curtailed abilities, spheres of activity, but God is without limit. I'm fully buying into St. Augustine's observation that pagan gods are the fallen angels, and certainly their behavior lives up to that. There aren't really any "good" pagan gods, truly merciful ones, and they turn on each other all the time. As I said, it's fascinating. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Here's a question:
Why did all the miracles stop? The Bible is full of miracle stories. Genesis, the flood, pillars of salt, pillars of fire, parting of seas, immaculate conception, the dead rising from the grave, water walking the Bible kind of ends on a cliffhanger: Jesus ascends to Heaven, with plans to come back at some future date. Then, nothing else miraculous happens. No more smiting or brimstone or rivers running red with blood. Why did everything stop two thousand and some odd years ago? Posted by: Don Black ============ Tangential, but I'm curious about a more recent dearth of miracles. It strikes me that it's getting more and more difficult to canonize saints because the church can't identify a miracle the candidate was responsible for. In the olden days, there were stigmata, visions, speaking in tongues, fasting for years, bodies that didn't corrupt, levitation, torture devices flying to pieces, etc. I wonder why those things aren't so common anymore. I'm answering your question: If it's a mutation, than how does it repeat and form a functional limb?
Is it the repetition that you think can't happen, or the formation a functional limb? Posted by: Blonde Morticia at March 18, 2025 09:10 PM (lCaJd) Gould called it "the hopeful monster" but I don't think he was serious. I am not a evolutionary biologist, but the current orthodoxy is that the "crown group or species" is the first appearance of the ancestor of all the current species of a phylum, or class or order (depending) but the current observation is that the crown species have descendant species that will have atavistic (throwback) characteristics. It seems that mutations that are useful may need to survive many evolutionary changes to be permanent, or at least the alternate genetics have to be winnowed out through multiple evolutions. Also, mutations that are useful in some situations may be useless in other environments, and things which are energy intense but not useful tend to be lost. Colombian gas stoves may well have fewer safety features that have been mandated for stoves sold in the USA. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 18, 2025 09:23 PM (MqtqS) Current Colombian stoves probably have more safety features than US gas stoves made in the 1920's - 1970's, some of which are still probably in use, and don't seem to have killed too many people. there is a chance that the stoves built in Colombia are subsidized, there has been a long tendency to promote property ownership and agricultural development similar to the TVA project and the various USDA programs in the US.

Safety features for the illiterate and ignorant.
First gas stove had a line to the burner and to the pilot for each burner. Turn the gas on and the pilot lights the gas. Gas became more expensive so dad cut the pilots off. Presto, comes the kitchen matches. Best idea is to light the match before turning on the gas. Ask a welder.
