Daredevil, a Series Disney Was Counting on to Revive Its Failing Marvel Franchise, Posts Low Ratings in Debut
Plus: Is This Something?

The show isn't that bad. Kingpin, they say, is based on Trump, but I don't hear that there's much wokeness in it. I don't really like it, but it's mostly like the old Netflix show, which I also wasn't a big fan of.

What I mean is, it should satisfy the old audience.

But the old audience isn't tuning in.

Interest in the Marvel brand is now down at Star Wars levels, so even relatively "good" (by comparison) projects are passed over.

Marvel Studios had high hopes for Daredevil: Born Again, positioning it as a major revival of the Netflix-era Daredevil series and a key effort to win back longtime fans. However, despite Variety and Disney painting the numbers as a success, a closer look reveals a starkly different story.

According to Disney, Daredevil: Born Again drew 7.5 million views in its first five days. Variety calls this a "strong launch," but in reality, this number falls well below expectations for a series of this magnitude.

For comparison, The Acolyte--a series that performed so poorly it was shelved after one season--managed 11.1 million views in its first week. That was already considered underwhelming, coming in 3 million below Ahsoka. Even Agatha All Along, widely regarded as a disastrous misfire for Marvel streaming, managed 9.3 million in its first week.

This raises serious questions about the future of Marvel's television projects. If Daredevil: Born Again, with its strong brand recognition and returning fan-favorite cast, can't outperform some of Marvel's weakest streaming entries, is the studio truly capable of turning things around? Disney and Variety can attempt to spin these numbers, but the reality is clear--this was supposed to be a major comeback, and instead, it signals further decline.

...

At this point, Marvel Studios is facing an uphill battle to regain audience trust. The push to reclaim the momentum of the past is growing more desperate, and projects like Daredevil: Born Again were meant to be the remedy. Instead, with a launch this lackluster, it seems the studio is still struggling to bring audiences back. If Marvel's legacy characters can't drive engagement, what does that mean for its future?

Midnight's Edge calls the ratings a "disaster."

Below: Is This Something?

Remember the 80s game Contra?

I barely do. It wasn't a game I played much, but it was in almost every arcade.

I don't know how real this is, but here's a trailer for what is called a "short film" based on the game.

A fan-made short film inspired by the iconic video game series 'Contra', created and owned by Konami.

THE STORY:

Bill and Lance--two ripped, no-nonsense commandos--are called upon by their grizzled old commander, Colonel Blood, for one last death-defying mission. But when their chopper crash-lands in the heart of the Last Frontier, they're stranded, outnumbered, and outgunned.

With nothing but bare fists, oversized weapons, and an insatiable thirst for destruction, they carve a path of carnage through their enemies, leaving behind one simple reminder:

REAL MEN DON'T RELOAD.

Looks pretty awesome, honestly. There's that one shot showing the pair side-scrolling through enemies. (But wasn't the Contra game top-down rather than a side-scroller? I dunno.)

Nick Cage has not one but two movies coming out:

They wanted to build on the momentum of Daredevil....which was on how many years ago???

Contra is a killer game, it was side/up/down scroller.

Not sure how they capture the comedy of the first Spinal Tap. There are no more bands. Music is gone.

That said, I caught Disturbed the other day and they are killer live.

Basically, and he apparently was explosively lame in the show. The entire idea is ridiculous. First off a Wiccan is a woman. Second, he's the nonexistent child of Scarlet Witch she invented with her magic, that for some reason was made real. Third, he's gay as a major character trait rather than just part of his background. That's just bad writing. Its like making a character about being white.

89 and daredevil was unmanned by She-Hulk in his red and yellow gear.

That and having Kingpin reduced to a weeping wreck and having his eye shot out -- no wait, it got better -- in the Hawkeye and Echo shows didn't help either.

Basically they crapped all over both characters then expected people to line up. But like Razorfist said, "if you get served a shit souffle over and over, you're not gonna line up for another serving"

90 Vehicle to bring in ghey Wiccan to add to the young avengers movie that won't be made.

109 With Contra its just more Hollywoke creative bankruptcy and ivory tower disconnect.

The 'creatives' in Hollywoke are VAGUELY aware that video games are popular. They don't actually KNOW anybody that plays video games, but they have a vague idea that a lot of stupid unwashed peasants are playing them.

So now you see them frantically trying to figure out what video games they can make into movies.

Of course they won't actually PLAY any of these games, or hire anybody who has, or spend any time figuring out the plots.

What they'll do is take one of their already-written scripts, use Grok to pull some names from the Contra franchise, plug them into their already-written script, and call it a Contra movie.

Same thing they do with a ton of these other properties they buy.

Because Hollywoke writers don't WANT to make good adaptations of popular properties. They want to use those properties as a springboard for their own careers.

Having somebody like Peter Jackson create movies with the explicit intent of making what Tolkien wrote, was an anamoly.

Every culture needs Mythical Heros to be examples for young Boys, to show them how to be Men.

We used to have Babe Ruth, and Johnny Appleseed, and Paul Bunyan, and Davey Crocket... and Superman, and Batman... and the Rocketeer.

But the Media and Hollywood cannot live up to those standards... and so those had to be destroyed... heroes had to 'look like' the degenerates that run the Left, and most of media... so they morphed those Heroic Iconic Heroes... into the Lame parodies we see today.

I remember seeing a preview for a movie, a frightening scene, with everyone looking for a hero. Then, a profile of a head with pointed ears like Batman is shown. The lights brighten and it turns out to be Scooby Doo's head. That was the funniest part of that movie as well.

174 Marvel and Disney have "detached" all of the previous generations of fans of their work to cater to Woke. I imagine it like a cloud, looks nice and defined, solid. Then a wind called Woke blows and the cloud, which used to happy and little, gets stretched apart, until there's nothing left. No part of the original cloud remains, and THAT is what these fools are now going to try and do.... re-build a cloud.

Sorry, fools, Marvel and Disney are done.

180 I guess the best comicbook movie in my memory was "The Incredibles." That was artistic as all hell, fun to watch, and whatever 'messages' it had were palatable.

-------

Yeah, that was some of the last children's entertainment that wasn't just blaring agitprop telling kids "join our new community! It's better than your stupid parents! Maybe you should just kill them so you can explore gay stuff! Place your trust in the will of the collective! The past is a foreign country to you now! Reject those old values! You don't want to be racist, right?! Plus, check out this gay stuff! Never forget to be gay! At least a little gay!"

Even back then it stuck out like a sore thumb in Hollywood.

181 Not really seeing to many recent movies, but here is some food for thought.

I was watching some old Twilight Zone episodes, and I realized that many of the plots, plot devices, or tropes were later used in movies.
Just off the top of my head:
Liar Liar. There was an episode where a guy buys a car and has to tell the truth.
Lost. The one about the plane that traveled back in time to time of dinosaurs.
Groundhog Day. The one where the guy makes deal with devil for immortality and then gets a life sentence for murder.

I had a few more last night. T-zone was like the Seinfeld of Velvet Undergrounds.

I got interested in the emergency escape systems for the Crew Dragon. Before they start fueling, there is an "escape basket" system. They blow the hatch explosively, and the astronauts are to jump out, run down the access arm and get into the escape baskets that roll down steel cables from the gantry.

You can see videos of testing of this system.

Now, once they start fueling, the access arm is retracted, and they have to use the escape rockets to propel the capsule off the stack at high g's.

I would have been more excited, but they soiled the red guy badly with the She Hulk outing, and made Fisk look terrible by having him get beaten up by that chick with the fake leg in that other show that I now completely forgot about.

A real shame, because Daredevil was the best Marvel/Netflix production out there. Closely followed by The Punisher.

Fueling the rocket, loading the cryo propellants is the most dangerous phase. NASA used to load the astronauts only after the rocket was fully loaded. Thought that was safer.

But SpaceX wanted to use sub-cooled LOX, meaning it can't just sit in the tanks and be continuously topped off due to boil off.

The old school astronauts didn't like that at first, but they came around. But it means the launch escape system must be armed and depended on to get the capsule off the rocket quickly if there's a mishap during fueling.

So, last night I saw a movie from 1993 that I liked titled-

"Wilder Napalm".

It's a rom-com about two brothers (Dennis Quaid, Arliss Howard) with Stephen King-style firestarter powers who compete for a gal played by Debra Winger. It was directed by the same guy who wrote and directed the series, "Moonlighting", back when he was a thing.

Anyway, it's more of an interesting failure than some forgotten classic, but it's consistently entertaining, even if all the part don't quite come together properly. You'll probably enjoy it.

It's currently streaming "for free" on Prime.

Check it out.....esp if your only other option is to watch some Disney crapola.

267 So... I'm home and last night watched Fire In The Sky.

Alien abduction. I'd seen the ending plenty of times as a kid but never saw the whole thing. Was looking forward to it.

Terrible. But terrible in a kinda sorta so bad it's good way.

Set in Arizona, filmed in Oregon. Oregon is definitely not Arizona. Everyone dressed very PNW but with cowboy hats. And generic Hollywood Southern accents. One cop looked straight out of In The Heat Of The Night. And the hair and beards...Jesus Christ...

The way it was shot and the locales made it feel very much like an early episode of The X-Files. Looking it up it came out several months before the X-Files debuted. I have to wonder if there was an influence. Also, Robert Patrick is in it and he would star in the X-Files later in the series.

The actors did their best with the material they were given, but it was still a little hammy. DB Sweeney did fine. Always felt he was underrated as an actor. James Garner just shows up. He was great.

Overall, it's really stupid. Watch it but drink heavily.

329 "Mandy" was really bad. Sorry, Ace.

330 Just watched Dungeons & Dragons with Chris Pine. Mildly entertaining ... A decent way to get through 2hrs and not stress the gray matter.

That was my reaction. Its okay, not terrific but tolerable. Certainly better than the older one which was horrible.

My favorite comedic sequence in O Brother was this one:
Pete: Wait a minute. Who elected you leader of this outfit?
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well Pete, I figured it should be the one with the capacity for abstract thought. But if that ain't the consensus view, then hell, let's put it to a vote.
Pete:Suits me. I'm voting for yours truly.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well I'm voting for yours truly too.
Delmar O'Donnell: Okay... I'm with you fellas.

331 I LOVE the original Point Break.
-------------
I kid you not--I've seen that one from start-to-finish at least a dozen times, and seen parts of it another dozen times (I stop and watch if I'm ever flipping channels and its on!).

332 I always thought they could have had a much better looking female co-star in that series.

Well, they could have but i think Fi's look was better for the show. She had a shadowy background; merc, gun runner; not an easy life for a 10 out of 10; Fi was striking; strong personality and for a slim woman she was rock hard. I thought she was well cast. Absolutely loved that show. Loved Psych as well as silly as it was. Monk was ok the first couple seasons but I got a little bored with it.

No sale.

Spinal tap 2? WTH? Is there nobody left in Hollywood that can come up with an original idea?

Actually I can easily see this work. There's a lot of mockery to be done of old rock groups reforming or doing a nostalgia tour. Like the $500 dollar tickets and not being able to hit the notes any more.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

There's plenty of jokes you can make about nostalgia bands actually doing the Milli Vanilli thing on stage. In the last several years there's been something of a scandal within the music world with rock bands lipsyncing. Motley Crue, KISS and others got caught recently. Funniest is The Eagles, because Don Henley is a dick, and Joe Walsh did so many drugs that he can barely talk in interviews, but they sing perfectly in concert.

You could do a movie where Spinal Tap starts a business setting up the lipsync music for A-list bands and they're finally successful... at least until they do an Eagles concert and mistakenly use Aerosmith's music and Henley sues them into bankruptcy. Then they have to go out on the road starting over doing their old tunes, but seeing as there really aren't any rock bands any more, they struggle to get gigs.

When it comes to songs, Brandy >>> Mandy.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at March 14, 2025 05:46 PM (a3Q+t)

343 Con Air was a Malkovich movie. Any vaguely-charismatic action hero could have played Cage's role.
Trejo and Meaney were also good in it. And Buscemi being Buscemi.

344 Monk was ok the first couple seasons but I got a little bored with it.

Yeah, I liked parts of most episodes but they spent WAY too much time on "look at how weird Monk is, isn't he weird, here's him being weird. WEEEIRD."

Hell, I like Faceoff.

It was dumb and bad but entertaining. The superdupermax prison scenes were a bit odd, that felt too over the top even in that movie.

Yeah, I'll consent to Big Lebowski, but just for taste O Brother hedges it out by a tad.

I'm a HUGE Coen bros fan, though.

347 Mandy is good, but it is super-weird, like weird for the sake of being weird.

Cenobite-like Demons walk the earth and they're selling drugs. And Cage has to take out the trash.

The movie is basically a Frank Frazetta painting.

351 I think the comments in the Midnights Edge link sum it up. Disney has ruined the brand and many people, including myself, will never subscribe to Disney+. When Spectrum and Disney reworked their contract, I think it was about a year ago, Spectrum lost Nat Geo Wild, Freeform, FXX and FXM but offered customers access to Disney Basic. Not a good trade off, Disney and Spectrum probably lost customers over that one.

352 Not a movie fan. Haven't seen a movie I've never seen before since 2020 and haven't seen a brand-new movie in theaters since 2019. But this year has offered me three possible choices.

Fantastic Four does not look interesting. Superman still has a chance. I will credit the teaser with giving us a sense of hope which we could really use, just not sure this movie is going to help.

I'm fine with them including Krypto, but if you're going to have Superman beaten and bloody on the ground, I want the villain standing there, laughing with victory. Then Krypto drops down between them, growls directly at the camera like a beast out of hell and leaps towards us with more rage than we could ever imagine. What little we saw in the teaser does not look like that Krypto, whom Superman is depending on right now.

Now there's Spinal Tap. Nothing repulses me although it doesn't really have show anything either. Does it have a chance...?

354 Why would you let Disney's lesbian Marxists remake anything. The reason why they are lesbian is because they hate men. Anything they make or remake is going to be for one audience only. This is easy stuff.

I keep hearing about these new shows being very slow to develop, even if the characters and plot and dialog are not horrid. I wonder if this is also due to feminization of these new writers and directors...they are more tolerant to extra words to drive the plot rather than actions, even as simple as walking around.

I find it impossible to believe that modern writers rooms are going to be able to write a parody of male hard rock music groups very well. They seem to be able to only write about their own personal life, not even other women's lives.

The iron law of entertainment is there's only so much a middle class family can afford per month for all types. Streaming might steal from ad supported cable and movies but the total amount of money won't grow.

359 Daredevil was pretty good.
The Punisher was pretty good.
The one with the chick from "Don't trust the B from Apt whatever" was decent.
Luke Cage was boring.
Iron Fist was unwatchable.

I have no idea what this new season of Daredevil is like, because I will never pay Disney another dime.

I don't really watch Marvel anymore either, but the previous Daredevil was good enough that I probably would have checked it out on a different platform.
