We need to bring back the old term "Democrat Wars" -- a common expression in the '60s to remind everyone that WWII, Korea, Vietnam (and other smaller conflicts) were all started by Democrats and (initially) opposed by Republicans. The Democrats for decades were the acknowledged "Party of war." And still are.

A lasting peace deal on their terms is what they really want. That will be tougher to get, but they'll get it. Uke is out of money, out of arms, out of men, and out of friends.

Sure. We could also consider that Putin has been open to peace talks all along. It's been Zelensky and the EU who've refused to talk to Russia. This is certainly not an agreement to a lasting peace. But peace can only happen if you can get the warring parties to stop shooting at each other and start talking. So this isn't an end to the war, but it is a necessary step if the war is to ever end.
Many wars never end. And probably never will. Many Greeks still reject the Turkk/Ottoman conquest of Byzantium/Asia Minor and still regard it as Greek territory, and plan to regain it. The Korean War is still ongoing -- we're merely in a temporary ceasefire. Jews/Arabs in the Holy Land -- 'nuff said. The Chinese Civil War is still actively happening with the Nationalist Army in firm possession of Formosa and the Communist forces in control of the mainland -- but an undeclared ceasefire barely holds. The Kurds still look to regain the land stolen from them by the Turkic tribes and Arab invaders. Serbs and Kosovars. Etc etc etc. Even WWI is not technically over - several countries which declared war between 1914-1918 never officially revoked the declaration, to this day. War is the background noise to civiliation. Posted by: zombie at March 13, 2025 01:33 PM (pMi6S) 69

So the San Fran judge-king has ordered that Trump immediately re-hire all fired probationary employees.
Uh-huh. What's the mechanics of that, and enforcing that? Anyway, yesterday Trump said he's going to enforce his right under the Federal Rules that the defendant's put up the bond for any damages should the injunction be found improper. Watch the judge-king set the bond as "reasonable" at $1. Which is a nice trap set by Trump. Because reasonable would be equivalent to the salary of all those fired. I'm guessing setting an unreasonable bond is appealable, even in a TRO. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at March 13, 2025 01:38 PM (q3zn6) 99

Trump increased pressure on Russia by slapping sanctions on banks that processed Russia oil sales to the EU. Biden, who was supposedly such a Hard Guy on Russia, had not done this. In fact, he specifically suspended sanctions on banks processing Russia oil sales.
I imagine that was the EU pressuring Biden not to put those sanctions on. I didn't know Trump had done those sanctions specifically. Posted by: eleven at March 13, 2025 01:31 PM (0HaGk) -- -- The Crimean peninsula, with it's Russian Naval base in Sevastopol, basically. You control Crimea, you can control the Black Sea, if you need to. Also, it's nice to have if you want to get to the Mediterranean. And he needed the Donbass to get there from Russia without depending on bridges and ferries. He did not want NATO to have Ukraine because it would have hemmed Russia in surrounding Crimea and prevented a strong defense of the homeland itself. Most invasions of Russia from the West have come through Ukraine. So the Russians don't want to give anybody a head start by allowing foreign bases right on their doorstep. I was listening to some Eastern European guy (can't remember where he came from) at a dinner table carrying on passionately about something that happened in his country vs another country and the leader standing on a hill and making a speech threatening this and promising that and from details, I realized this wasn't the early 20th century he was talking about, as I'd assumed. Traditional Golf Swings are great and all...but the only thing that matters in a golf swing is the interface of the club surface and the ball at contact. How you get the club face to the ball is essentially irrelevant, so long as you are in control of that one component. Now. Doing that consistently and without employing the traditional mechanics is difficult for many...but if you look at the Hockey Players who are really good at golf, many of their swings are atrocious. From one of the Bulgarian-Byzantine wars perhaps? Serbia has a lot of grievances that show up later, when the Muslims invaded the Balkans. One of their big ones, which the FNM ignored, was their sort of victory sort of loss in the Battle of Kosovo against the Ottomans. They killed the Sultan and most of his army, but also lost most of their own. So they won but...the Ottomans just called up more men from other parts of their empire and went on conquering (this is a pro-gamer move for those that play strategy games) Posted by: 18-1 at March 13, 2025 02:05 PM (t0Rmr) 288
There was a treaty among the former Russian satellite regions;
Agreement on the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States - Belavezha Accords. A plan between Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine to create a Commonwealth of Independent States upon the collapse of the USSR. It basically carved up the former Soviet Union. Crimea was a semi-autonomous region, ethnically aligned with Russia. Before the war there was much ethnic strife among those that identified as Russian and those that identified as Ukrainian. The regions resorted to armed conflict before Russia got involved. IMO it was Russia's place to resolve the issue. The Ukrainians and the US (and NATO) basically ignored this treaty. I'm glad for the possibility of Peace... but... turning the Banking system into a weapon of war? as we have the last 50 or so years... will come back and bite us eventually.
This unilateral move did not just show Russia who had the whip hand, but also every EU country... and China... and India... and Viet Nam... and everyone else out there. Several EU nations, who're totally not at war with Russia, impounded the Russian sovereign funds held in European banks and have been using the interest to fund Ukraine. After UKR attacked a few times and RUS recruited more troops they formed a reserve there that reacted to the invasion of Kursk but those troops were not deployed on the front. North of Sumy, still neither side has much force there. An force of 15000, a division, has a frontage of 15-25 miles. Drop that on the Dniepr and Russia could eventually just drive around them. Which doesn't justify either side's actions. You can keep going back, listing the various Uke/Russian conflicts, going back for centuries. Basically, the only rational course of action for the rest of the world to wall the place off, supply both sides with weapons and let nature take it's course Posted by: IllTemperedCur at March 13, 2025 02:30 PM (y9nCu) Oh nonsense. You probably don't know this but I've started writing a book about grief and recovery. I've decided to expand that into a discussion about death and dying.
I'm not even remotely smart enough to write about that but I think I will try. Question for you: if you were dying and you knew it would you talk about it with the people who love you? Posted by: Northernlurker Yes. Posted by: rickb223 at March 13, 2025 02:32 PM (WZaJc) 399

We stand firm in our support for Ukraine’s right to decide its own future and foreign policy course free from outside interference. The Annual National Programmes under the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC) remain the mechanism by which Ukraine takes forward the reforms pertaining to its aspiration for NATO membership. "In fact, he specifically suspended sanctions on banks processing Russia oil sales."
Gee, didn't a democrat president in the 90's 'neglect' the same action concerning Iraqi oil sales to Europe, to? Posted by: Danimal28 at March 13, 2025 02:29 PM (1E4GV) The sanctions also make it legal for Russia to sail a tanker to India, paint "not Russian, srsly" and sell it to the US and the EU. and they do. An force of 15000, a division, has a frontage of 15-25 miles. Drop that on the Dniepr and Russia could eventually just drive around them.

Seems to me that Russia's two top demands are completely acceptable.
Wars happen, and boundaries change. Doesn't matter why it started. Them's the rules. No way they can accept Ukraine joining NATO. Huge shared border. That would be a tinderbox for WW-III. My $0.02 Posted by: connertown at March 13, 2025 03:37 PM (Xo5AT) 419
Russia doesn't need a ceasefire, it's winning!
May not need a ceasefire, but wants one. Russia is certainly winning, but has really already won all it wants (assuming Trump agrees Ukraine will not be admitted to NATO; Russia has occupied eastern Ukraine and has no territorial aspirations beyond that). Why did Putin invade Ukraine?
Putin was after parts of Ukraine before the Ukraine in NATO concept seemed serious. He is after ethnic Russians. Ethnic Russians are headed for minority status in Russia, and Putin is influenced by traditional Russian philosophers/scholars that write about Russian exceptionalism. He is afraid of losing what it means to be "Russian." This is not a land grab. It is a "person" grab. Putin is not trying to rebuild the Soviet empire. He wants to collect all the ethnic Russians and stem the inevitable tide swamping them demographically in Russia. Posted by: HSL at March 13, 2025 05:10 PM (0eDhr) 422
