65 Morning, Art Consumers,

My mind said "Hopper" immediately before I scrolled down. That's a tribute in itself, to have such a recognizable style that even an art Neanderthal like myself can spot it.

The woman looks a tad tranny-ish. That neck says "I put in the hours in the gym, bro." The outdoors seems more like an October morning in Nebraska or Kansas (or so I imagine those to look like), or out on the CO plains.

105 All seriousness aside, this painting is dominated by that open stretch of flat horizon and clear blue sky. You can feel the breeze ruffling the grass.

The concrete apron around the base of the house also looms large in your view. Odd that there are no potted plants or outdoor furniture on it. The bright color of the woman's dress reminds one of radishes on a green salad.

And come to think of it, the shutters on the windows are much more of a hurricane-country look than you might see in NE, KS, or CO. Not sure; do they do shutters like that?

180 Hopper is an interesting artist. His scenes aren't exciting but they catch the eye. What I noticed in this painting is the 'slabs' of color with hard, straight lines: the concrete pad, the building and window slats, the lines as the grass recedes into the distance before getting to the shore, even the shadow above the woman's head. Then the contrast with the woman. Brighter colors and no hard lines, just soft curves. There's no drama in the scene, in fact just the opposite, but it does get attention.

186 So the left thinks they've found a sympathetic face to the evil of Trump's deportations:

Dr. Rasha Alawieh.
You won't be surprised to find that every article on her dodges why she was deported with the lie that there was no reason for her to be removed.*
Because every article quotes and sources to only her family.
And CAIR.

Completely refuses to explain why she went to Lebanon. Who are her family back there are. Or what activities she's engaged in while in the US (other than she's an assistant professor at Brown).

Anyway, they and the judge are super pissed 'cause the judge issued an order that she not be removed and Trump was like "nah, bro--she gone."

* and you know by now all the socials and the search sites are scrubbed of any negative reference to her or her family, so no use trying to find out what is the real reason.

224 South Carolina Morning - 1955
Edward Hopper

The tension between the vanishing point, established by the building and the concrete intersecting on the horizon, and the woman in orange is, oh my - where should one focus; it is impossible. Then there is the tension between the vertical and horizontal slabs - the foreground is sterile and gray while the background is lovely natural colors; it is all a jumble and claustrophobic. And then there is the tension of woman in red staring right at you while her folded arms are warning that you would be a fool to come closer.

This a Hopper masterpiece with all the Hooper goodness stuffed into it. It is so good it doesn't even need a dog.

Verdict: I would steal this if I could get away with it.

225 My only thought is no woman would be wearing black heels with that dress on a sunny morning near the beach. That painting would be so much better if she was barefoot. Just think how that would change the vibe.

City girl. City artist. 1955? A southern girl would be wearing a sun dress and sandals. Cigarette in one hand and a glass of something in the other. Leaning against the door frame and looking for trouble.

232 Tim Walz's Iowa town hall was well received. More Democrats in Congress and Governors need to pick up the baton and run with this. Bernie Sanders started it. We need to carry on.

I believe we might be looking at our next president. Harris's campaign handlers should NEVER see another job within any Dem campaign. Walz was essentially chosen for his strengths and then asked not to use them.

He gave a master class in public service and democracy at work. A thing of beauty! Makes my heart sing. Tim tells things in terms people can understand. He never talks down to people. Even when issues are tough, he used words that were harsh and honest.

Tim is a good person but not sure he is what we need. Saw something a few days ago that Rahm Emanuel was considering it. He has potential. I wish Obama had let him off the leash when he was his Chief of Staff. He was the kind of street fighter needed to allow Obama to get more good things done.

The fact he passed on running for the Senate could indicate presidential ambitions. Would Harris getting in the race discourage him from running? It’s going to be an interesting cycle.

While there this particular woman would come out to sun herself and then immediately retreat inside if one approached her. 25 years later this moment was still in his mind when he painted it.

Decades ago, when Rusty, my boyhood red tabby, had his batteries disconnected, not only did he have to stay overnight at the vet's, but he came home doped to the gills. He moved slowly all around the ground floor of our apartment, as if checking to be sure he was really home. Then he crept over to the recliner he liked to sit in, and looked up at me. I lifted him up. He curled into a ball and slept for two hours. Woke up ravenous and otherwise normal.

Nowadays they come home the same day and hardly seem doped at all.

303 Walz bailed on his NG unit in MN. That used to be an extinction level event for a politician.

He wasn’t some E4, he was a sergeant major - on tap to be a command sergeant major. This is a “lateral” promotion in that he would have been the highest ranking enlisted soldier for the unit. A key position. This tells me he’s a wanker, and probably not much of an NCO at any point in his career. Good NCOs are special, and rare.

Take the timing into account. When Zahn wrote these there wasn't anything else other than Lucas sitting on the IP and collecting royalties. Brian Daley did some too with his Han Solo series (which I enjoyed immensely when I was starved for something other than ROTJ and its stupid muppets).

Star Trek was the same way. TOS did crazy awesome in syndication and the novelizations/conventions/etc were all we fans had for new content. Sidebar, in 1977 when Star Wars came out, Charles Bluhdorn was so pissed off that he greenlit ST:TMP.

Heir etc aren't high literature, but it does work well for an original SW novel series. I'd even argue that it set up the entire SW novelization environment.

307 It has been forever since I have read any Star Wars book.

But I always bring up the Spathi chambers and that mental static because the Guyana Grape swilling fans would always gush over how Lucas Films would double check everything to make sure each book was in cannon. Over the last couple of weeks, I've perfected the Gibson Cocktail. It's a transcendent concoction now, assuming you follow the recipe exactly.
And it uses a French Gin. Not sure if you can find the other ingredients in Frogville though.

The Last Gibson

2oz Citadelle "Vive le Cornichon" Gin
1 oz Martini & Rossi Riserva Speciale Ambrato Vermouth
2 drops of Japanese Bitters - Umami
Shake shake shake with ice
Strain into cocktail glass
Garnish with 2 S&R Tipsy Onions (the Luxardo Cherries of the Cocktail Onion World) on a toothpick.
Drink! And eat the 2 onions at your leisure throughout.
Hands down. One of the best cocktail experiences you will have.

BUT there is an anomaly… this persistent meme that Elon / Spacex is rescuing the Boeing-lofted duo is the FIRST time I have noticed a media spin that is PRO-Elon, PRO-Spacex, and and by extension implicitly PRO-Trump!!

WTH is going on? Did the media memo machine break down? Is Joe Biden finally being hung out to dry? Is there a hidden fount of anti-Boeing hatred beyond what had become normal since the 737 Max debacle?

This one is noticeable by its singularity.. it would be easy to accuse Elon of exaggerating his role for political purposes, and not entirely unfair to do so. But they are keeping the bat on their shoulder, and letting this hanging curveball float by!

331 >> Was that the expanded book universe canon that Disney nuked until they needed Admiral Thrawn to act as a McGuffin?

I honestly don’t know. I never read the extended universe stuff. When I saw the prequels, I thought it was odd that Padme was elected “Queen.” I figured Lucas didn’t want to be so un-progressive as to have a hereditary monarch as a main character.

Later I read on the internet that Queen Organa was an actual hereditary monarch, which deals with the plot hole of how Leia could be princess. Apparently Bail Organa married the Queen, so he was something like King Consort.

I gave up on SW after the prequels. Never saw any of the Disney movies or shows.

The original I]Man From U.N.C.L.E. novels from Ace sometimes varied widely from the broadcast TV show. Some of the early writers worked mostly from publicity handouts from the studio (and used some of the exact language from them). Some of the books were fun; some were rather pedestrian.

MfU didn't go into syndication after it was canceled in 1968, at least not in many markets. So we fans had even less to go on than Trek people; we had no print adaptations of episodes, for instance. It would have been neat to have "The Project Strigas Affair," the Mission: Impossible-like story that on TV featured both Shatner and Nimoy.

We were glad to have what we did. Until Trek, no TV show had more tie-in original novels, and they helped keep the flame alive.

Interesting posit I saw the other day:
We actually don't know what happens when one approaches the speed of light.
It's entirely possible that the laws of physics don't apply.

Also, paper the other day came out about "white holes."
Which not only spew out matter but also time.

And another recent paper I saw referenced again suggests we are inside a black hole.

But, then there is a whole lot of "we just pulled it out of our ass" in theoretical physics as they don't do much applied physics these days.

406 224 South Carolina Morning - 1955

“This is why Democrats are losing their minds over Elon Musk. It's all about money”

Rep Harriet Hageman “The Federal Department of Education spends it as a budget of about $280 billion a year. Less than 25% goes to educating our students. So where does the other $220 billion go? It goes to a bureaucracy, it goes to a consultant, and that consultant then donates money BACK TO DEMOCRATS, and then it goes to a different consultant, and then it goes to an NGO. I mean, IT IS MONEY LAUNDERING and money churning at its absolute best.”
