THE MORNING RANT: The Hartford Insurance is Canceling Coverage to the American Energy Institute Because It Promotes Carbon-Based Energy

The Hartford Insurance Company just notified the American Energy Institute that its insurance coverage is being cancelled because it’s the stated policy of The Hartford that it discriminates against carbon-energy advocates. This is in service to The Hartford’s radical Net Zero / DEI agenda.

I’m not engaging in hyperbole. The non-renewal notice from The Hartford to the American Energy Institute explicitly stated that, ”The reason for non-renewal is we have learned from your Facebook page that your operations include Trade association involved in promoting social / political causes related to energy production. This is not an acceptable exposure under The Hartford’s Small Commercial business segment guidelines.”

Hartford Insurance - Non-Renewal - Energy.JPG

Jason Isaac is the CEO and Founder of the American Energy Institute. In the tweet below, he notes that, “Insurance companies are financial companies, and the [Texas Comptroller] should add Hartford to the boycott list. Furthermore, [the Texas legislature] should pass legislation instructing our [Department of Insurance] commissioner to revoke their license to operate in Texas. Discriminating against industries vital to Texas' prosperity shouldn't be tolerated.”

Mr. Isaac also notes that the top three shareholder of The Hartford are Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street. Go figure.

It doesn’t take much digging to discover that Christopher Swift, CEO of The Hartford, comes across as a left-wing zealot who has embraced radical wokeism. The very first sentence in The Hartford’s 2023 Sustainability Report shows that CEO Christopher Swift’s allegiance is to “stakeholders,” not its shareholders. In other words, his loyalty is to the woke political cult, not to investors and customers of the company.

The Hartford continues to prioritize sustainable business practices, creating value for our stakeholders and leveraging our strengths to do well while doing good.

Mr. Swift’s fanatical devotion to the left’s agenda is further revealed in that same report:

The Hartford’s Chairman and CEO, Christopher Swift, is a long-time DEI advocate and is the foremost champion of The Hartford’s DEI initiatives.

As for The Hartford’s radical anti-carbon agenda that is being imposed by CEO Christopher Swift, it was only seven months ago that the company released its 2024 Task Force Climate Related Financial Disclosures in which The Hartford explicitly discusses its commitment to not only going “net zero” as a company, but also being a participant in eradicating the carbon-energy industry and related businesses altogether.

In April 2022, we announced an ambition to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions for our full range of businesses and operations by 2050, in alignment with the Paris Climate Accord. Achieving our net zero ambition will depend on multiple external variables, including aggregate reporting of and adherence to measurement protocols that remain under development. Despite this uncertainty, we are committed to seeking an approach that reflects a balanced transition to a green economy – our priorities must serve both our net zero ambition and our commitment to a just, equitable and achievable energy transition

Carbon-based energy is the fuel that propels freedom and prosperity, which Christopher Swift and The Hartford have made clear they seek to eradicate. There needs to be legal and financial consequences for this malicious behavior by Mr. Swift and The Hartford.

Any communications promoting this discriminatory agenda among BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street with The Hartford, as well as between The Hartford and other insurance companies, would possibly be grounds for a racketeering investigation by Pam Bondi and state attorney generals. It might also be easy to find other criminal violations including anti-trust, collusion, fiduciary negligence, and denial of civil rights.

The good news is that Texas is already pushing back against The Hartford. State Senator Bryan Hughes (R) heads the “Committee on State Affairs” and he fired off a letter last week to CEO Christopher Swift regarding The Hartford’s admitted policy of viewpoint discrimination. Senator Bryan has demanded a significant amount of documentation by the end of this week, including proof that The Hartford is consistent and similarly discriminates against anti-carbon advocates and against those promoting green energy. Here is some of what was in Sen. Hughes’ letter. The entire letter is pasted further below.

We are very concerned that an insurance company that does business in Texas would behave with such an antagonistic view towards energy production. In an effort to understand the extent of your discrimination, please provide the committee with the following information:

• The Hartford’s Small Business segment’s guidelines;
• All other guidelines, rules, policies, or procedures relating to the rejection of any customer or potential customer based upon any viewpoint;
• All documents applying the above guidelines to reject any potential customer or to decline to renew the policy of any existing customer, including all internal communications;
• All information evaluating the relative insurable risk of companies involved in, “promoting social/political causes related to energy production” as compared to other companies;
• A list of any potential or existing customer who has had a policy declined or non-renewed based upon the guidelines referenced above;
• A list of all existing customers that are involved in social or political causes related to energy production including customers that promote “green energy” or advocate against oil and gas production and all documents related to the decision to continue to offer The Hartford products to them; and
• The identity of any employee of The Hartford and any of its companies who has any input into the decision to accept or reject a customer based upon the customer’s viewpoint.

It won’t be sufficient for The Hartford to say “Oops” and simply un-cancel the American Energy Institute’s coverage while continuing to go on discriminating against other energy-related customers.

This is an excellent opportunity for red states to make a statement. If The Hartford faces licensing cancellation across much of the United States, and if Christopher Swift finds himself having to lawyer up to defend against The Hartford’s discriminatory business practices, executives across corporate America might start to re-think their desire to be obedient apparatchiks in service to Klaus Schwab and Larry Fink.

The full letter from the State of Texas’s Committee on State Affairs is immediately below.

More like managed by the three witches of Blackrock, State Street, and Vanguard. They really need to be stripped of voting shares for their account holders. It should be required that they get a specific opt in from each accountholder in order to vote those shares at shareholder meetings, and for board members.

James Burnham called it the Managerial Economy where ownership has been divorced from management. Management runs it for themselves and their preferences with the stockholders be damned. Total violation of fiduciary responsibility.

The control of the insurance industry almost guarantees the left of some level of control over the public.

Buck, I would argue that the least expensive energy is what propels freedom and prosperity.

I have no emotional commitment to petroleum energy, and if somebody came up with one that is better and cheaper...sign me up!

But chemistry and physics don't lie, and it is going to be very tough to create an energy source that is as dense as petroleum. I can drive my 5,000 pound SUV 500 miles on less than 20 gallons of gasoline.

79 I am of the opinion that companies, like The Hartford, should be permitted to engage in viewpoint discrimination.

They should, however, be required to disclose this fact, prominently, on all public communications along with the fact that the specific viewpoints for which they discriminate are subject to change without prior notice. They should also be banned from doing business with any government funded entity as viewpoint discrimination violates the Constitution.

Agree on all counts.

The fearmongering from Democrats on COVID, Climate, and Russia has finally exhausted the voting public. The Democrats are finding out that cultivating a state of fear in the populace to attain and maintain power has its limitations. Over time people get tired of hearing the same old drumbeat. The Marxist invention was applying this paradigm to the corporate world, where there definitely *are* shareholders, and acting as though a stakeholder is noble while a shareholder is a money-grubbing bastard with no interest in the endeavor succeeding or failing.

In consultation with Congress, we intend for the remaining 18% of programs we are keeping (approximately 1000) to now be administered more effectively under the State Department.

157 126 I've had a Vanguard account for 30+ years...it's done well.
Posted by: BignJames
=========
Compare your Vanguard account to monetary growth in the US over that time. You will find that the large deficits we have ran financed by below market interest rates on T bills by the Fed has been a massive steroid to the stock market prices.

At a certain point, it all unravels as that stimulus of government deficits comes to an end. Controlled with Trump, otherwise you get rapid disassembly of the economy thanks to loss of reserve currency status and a fed government forced to immediately amputate most spending immediately.

Trump and DOGE are trying to do field surgery to stabilize the US economy before the patient (US economy) crashes. Will have some weird effects but our only option is to reduce spending massively and ramp up GDP growth in the private economy to outrun the tsunami of government debt. The economy has to grow faster than the debt does to stabilize our debt to GDP ratio.

Something similar was done after WWII as that war left a lot of debt so you had shallow recessions and some inflation due to the fedgov fiscal and monetary actions.

It took all that time for permits to be approved. Including multiple lawsuits by enviro groups with appeals and appeals on appeals which each take several years to wind through the courts. 227 It's hard to underestimate just how much insurance companies drive policy in this country. And how it's a weak point of the left.

Your average consumer just thinks it collects premiums and pays claims.
Few realize that is the front for massive investment houses--they barely break even on premiums, they make profits on the investments.

Which is why I think most Red State Republicans are full of shit when they talk about going after the left:
Every single insurance company has to be licensed in their state.
E.g.: They could end tranny surgeries tomorrow by changing acceptable policy provisions via the state's insurance commission.
No new laws, no lawsuits, none of that grandstanding BS.

But all the GOPe feast at the trough of insurance companies ....

She's leading every Democrat primary poll (spit) by 30-40 points right now. That's Hillary 2016 territory (which almost didn't work because Hillary sucks and Kamala is even worse).

Essentially, Kamala is the frontrunner. Kamala could sleep for 4 years and probably remain the frontrunner. She will not sleep for 4 years, and she will probably end up tanking her own chances because she sucks.

DECK CHAIRS REARRANGED: Top Washington Post columnist resigns, accusing publisher of killing piece.

A top political columnist for The Washington Post resigned today, accusing Post chief executive and publisher Will Lewis of killing her column that criticized owner Jeff Bezos’s drive to overhaul the opinion pages to focus on his libertarian priorities.

Post columnist and Associate Editor Ruth Marcus, who has worked at the paper for four decades, says she can no longer stay there.

“Jeff’s announcement that the opinion section will henceforth not publish views that deviate from the pillars of individual liberties and free markets threatens to break the trust of readers that columnists are writing what they believe, not what the owner has deemed acceptable,” Marcus wrote in a resignation letter obtained by NPR.

368 We had auto insurance with The Hartford. Last August we were rear-ended on I-20 (in Texas, no less). The Hartford did absolutely NOTHING to locate the owner of the uninsured vehicle (who apparently had loaned it to a couple of her friends). We had to replace our car.

So their reprehensible customer service is just another reason to dump them, in addition to their reprehensible politics. And we did. Fuck The Hartford.

What columnist has free reign to write anything they please? You work for a paper. That paper has an EiC. They call the shots. That EiC has a board or an owner to report to. They *really* call the shots. You write a column they don't want to run, they don't run it. End of story.
