So, yesterday, in my travels back from the city, the Uber I was in had an unfortunate encounter with a Martz bus right on the Weehawken side of the tunnel, took about an hour for the PA Cops to do a report and let us all get on with our lives.
I discovered that upon an accident, an Uber drivers account is suspended until completion of an incident report and that the driver, regardless of who was at fault, will more than likely, not be allowed to drive for Uber again. At least the drivers was driving a rented vehicle and not his personal vehicle. He's got that going for him. So I watched X-Men First Class last night for the first time. Its overall pretty entertaining and well done with huge flaws and plot holes and such. But the performances are quite good, especially for a funny book movie. Other than Jennifer Lawrence who cannot act.
But there's a scene where Wolverine wakes up from having his mind thrown back in time, and he's freaking shredded, i mean he's all veiny and pumped like he just did 9000 reps and has not drank water for a week. Dude, he's just waking up. I get it, you want him to look buff and the girls can all go OOOOOH but seriously? Nobody looks like that when they are asleep. Its in the movies all the time, they get all pumped up before the shot so their muscles are all cut. “We know that during World War II, the rail network was heavily bombed, especially here north of Paris where there were also many factories,” he told reporters. Sud-Rail union official Fabien Villedieu posted a picture of the ordnance covered in dirt. It was not immediately clear when and by whom the bomb was dropped during World War II and if it dated to before or after the 1940 occupation of Paris by Nazi Germany.|| Posted by: andycanuck (/tzYP) at March 07, 2025 08:09 PM (/tzYP) 64

A true story that I have told here before. Mumble years ago when Mrs928 were first married, we lived on Lake Murray in SC. There was a guy that fed the wild geese and ducks. He fed them so often that they would come up in his yard for the tossed feed. Over the course of the year he would feed them from closer and closer to his house, eventually even into his garage. One day, after leading the large flock indoors, he shut the door. None of the creatures were ever seen again.
The horrors that must have happened in there are the stuff of avian nightmares, I am sure. Posted by: Grump928(C) Sunday is Vic's Birthday at March 07, 2025 08:36 PM (jc0TO) 106

The pictures up top are Norias, water lifting devices, not actually water mills. They are based on Roman designs, but the ones in Syria are probably build during the Arab period, not the Roman period. It does seem that the Romans built water wheels in France to mill wheat into flour, but those were different in design.
I have a fun little book based on a lot of Vitruvius' works on mechanism, where they discuss the Roman water lifting devices. They used them a lot in Iberian mines to drain water, and a bit in other industries. As "pumps" they generally were man powered, by some poor sort trudging along at the top of it Posted by: Kindltot at March 07, 2025 08:44 PM (D7oie) 116

I can see why someone would replace the house. It was a great lot with a floating pier but to call the house a cottage would have been very charitable. In short, the land was worth way more than the house.

I mentioned it in an earlier thread but the cats that aren't my cats, Snowflake and Trumpy, have a new home. The cat lady whom they got the first two cats, would love to have them.
The kids will get to visit and she'll take really good care of them. Apparently she plans on making them indoor cats. I tried for 4 months. And even in a very cold Canadian winter, they still wanted outside. With Mom gone, it was too much. They still come by everyday, scratch at the window and meow. I do pet them and they do visit. As a dog person, they're the sweetest cats. I'll miss them but will be happy they'll be taken care of and safe. It was warmer then and North Africa produced so much grain that Rome gave away bread.
Then man-made global climate change made it cooler and the fields stopped yielding as much grain. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at March 07, 2025 09:32 PM (/lPRQ) --- Warmer weather increases the growing season, and also boosts the water cycle, turning deserts into cropland. -------- Yeah, you shouldn't overlook bad behavior from a counterpart in a serious negotiation about something important, but this was just about atomic weaponry. Missed the last thread, but: one of the scandals Joe McCarthy uncovered was that Voice of America was staffed with communists who were filling taxpayer-funded “reading rooms” in Europe with actual communist, anti-American propaganda.
This led the Eisenhower admin to accuse him of “book burning”.. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at March 07, 2025 09:49 PM (xNfRN) 190
