Disney-Owned ABC "News" Lays Off 200, Axes Its Fake "538" Poll-Rigging Site
Back around 2010, a jubilant Andrew Breitbart told me that the entire media would collapse and be "gone" -- "GONE!" -- in five years.
His prediction was off by a decade, but it was basically accurate.538 was founded by liberal Nate Silver. It was purchased by ABC "News" who then got rid of Nate Silver and replaced that liberally-biased analyst with gonzo partisans who didn't even try to analyze polls accurately. They were straight-up goons who manipulated polls to tell their progressive cultist audience pleasing lies. Even Silver himself routinely attacked his old firm for biased and inaccurate methodologies. 538 lied progressives into complacency about 2024. Now they're fired.
ABC News staffers are bracing for imminent layoffs while the division will restructure its programming including the merging of its "20/20" and "Nightline" programs and the consolidation of its "Good Morning America" productions, according to reports. The Walt Disney Co. is set to lay off around 200 people from its ABC News Group division as well as its Disney Entertainment Networks unit -- a move that constitutes cutting some 6% of the combined staff of the two units, according to the Wall Street Journal. Almin Karamehmedovic, president of ABC News, circulated a memo to employees on Wednesday morning confirming the changes. ... A source told The Post that the layoffs will be spread over Wednesday and Thursday and that staffers at "World News Tonight" will also be affected. The reported changes at ABC News first appeared in Oliver Darcy's Status newsletter on Wednesday. The Post has sought comment from ABC News and Disney. One casualty of the cost-cutting measure is the FiveThirtyEight data news site -- the operation founded by Nate Silver which came to prominence in the 2008 and 2012 elections for accurately predicting the results.
According to the Journal, the entire site is being axed and all 15 of its employees will be handed pink slips.

One ABC staffer told Status that "people are freaked" as it wasn't clear when the layoffs would be announced this week. No presidential candidate will get below that range or above it.

I am convinced that Silver helped with the rigging in 2020, based on his actions on that election night. He predicted a Biden win and as results came in he clearly knew that all of his predictions were wrong (starting with FLA) but he also seemed to know that the Dems would make up for the early losses with cheating. I suspect that he told them which states to focus on to guarantee a win, and they did.
But anyway, the site was selling a narrative and not data while Silver was still there.

We have a bloated workforce of "thinkers," people who went to college, have degrees and demand jobs commensurate with their perceived value, yet they actually produce nothing. For all those laid off from their do-nothing careers, it may be very good indeed for them to take one of the upcoming labor positions in the factories being relocated here, and learn what it means to make something of real value. But that assumes the polls can be trusted.
Aggregates are a good idea with good polls. A terrible idea with bad polls. And 538 excluded good polls while kept in bad polls.

Premium in this case was all premium (no intrinsic value, because it was out of the money), and based on the long time to expiration, and the perceived volatility of the stock price.
I had like nearly three months for the stock to go from 110 (when I bought it) to anywhere below 100.
As the expiration date approaches, the time value slowly decays towards zero if the stock is above 100.
I am still banking on a shitty earnings report that comes out very soon (unless I missed it), and hoping investors freak out. I have until the third Friday of March, lol.

Aggregating is going to by nature introduce bad data because you are dealing with uncertainty.
Better idea - just look at a few polls from reputable pollsters, no need to do any further work. Then go make breakfast and have your day.

It just only works when the data being aggregated isn't intentionally skewed.

We're discussing starting a "housewife" type training school at church.
Men don't need it as much but there are certainly some things that could be useful to teach, but most of the males that don't know how to do stuff are from families that pay others to do the work for them, which is fine because that makes job opportunities for other capable men.
The problem is no one, left or right, teaches their daughters how to be wives any longer.
I bet the young ladies know how to try to change a tire before not being able to get the lug nuts off, though.

Right now they're at 25%-30% off. My sister in law is a quilter and is hoping they get down to 50% off while there are still good quilting supplies. I do a bit of sewing and I'm thinking of getting more thread, pins, and possibly fabric. I need to make some more napkins and redo the throw pillows on the couch. I wouldn't trust the weighting approach at all. It's too much judgment involved removed from the basic math behind everything.
The point of using statistics is to remove as much of the human element as possible to dig into data. When you're starting with human-based data, you're already in a bad place in keeping things honest.
But...aggregates of honest polls, which never agree at the same time in the real world, should get smaller margins for error than any of the individual polls. The point is diminishing the margin of error, getting it from 3 to 1.5 or something.
This is why RCP tends to outperform 538. RCP is pure aggregate. 538 does the weighting. Both are choosy about which polls. RCP tends to value accuracy over narrative.

Turn our high schools into community tech colleges.
Offer some skillsets that younger people, who don't want to go to college, can learn:
Mechanics, Welding, Carpentry, Restaurant/Culinary, IT Tech, Nursing-Assistant, Child Care, Cosmology - just to get started.
There are many skills that can be taught at the high school level for a lot of people to be able to learn.
It seems in a lot of places all these kids learn now is how to be left-wing activists with a Chromebook in one hand.

I really don't trust Trump on immigration, especially when it comes to legal immigration.
It needs to be shut the fuck down right now. And everyone who has come here in the last 20 years and is still here (even if they have citizenship) needs their entire paper trail audited.

The case was this: contractors who had finished their work were going to get paid by USAID, and Trump had frozen all payouts from USAID. OK it probably was a lousy project, but the work was done and the people who did the work should get paid.

But the real reason is that every nation in the West has a low birth-rate and if that continues their won't be enough workers to pay for the retired pensioners.
The numbers are not going to add up unless they start bringing in more people to pay taxes.
This is what happens when you have a "pay-as-you-go" retirement and benefits system and you start running out of the people who pay.
It's even worse in Europe, and they are having to pay for healthcare for the entire population, as well.
So, the U.S. has to bring in more people, or start having a lot more babies.
Trump is trying to get to a system of bringing in more skilled people and less of this wide open nightmare the Dems had going.

I saw on X recently a post about how an immigrant can get hundreds of thousands in Gov. backed business loans not available to citizens. More if a minority, woman, etc.
My parent's business was severely harmed when the gov. gave grants and loans to an immigrant competitor. This is not uncommon -- the system is rigged against white male citizens in so many ways, and Trump want more immigrants. That too is where I don't trust him or Musk at all.

Yes, we're aware. And Lindsey Graham said this exact thing on the debate stage when he running for President.
We are discovering in real time what Charles Ponzi's investors also discovered -- at some point there are not enough people on the planet to keep buying in to your scheme with new money, and the whole thing collapses.
So bringing in millions of people who may or may not be a net benefit to tax base on the assumption that they will gladly pay for the racist white horrible former americans social security payments seems a little suspect.
But sure, imagine they will. But this system requires an ever-growing number of new Americans paying in to the system as prior new Americans retire, until the entire population of the planet earth is living in America and paying in to social security. But then what happens when those people go to retire?
And by that point, we have destroyed the culture, likely the economy, and everyone with money has moved to new zealand.

Right, and the flip side is -- those immigrants are displacing American workers. In huge numbers. According to the Fed, nearly all new jobs since COVID have gone to immigrants.
So what do those American workers do? Eventually unemployment runs out. Blue collar jobs are largely filled by illegals. Starbucks only pays so much.
Do they go on social security disability? Or end up living paycheck to paycheck their entire lives until they die from deaths of despair?
