“ROGER BALL, HORDE. LOOKIN’ GOOD. KEEP IT COMIN’”

It’s been a little while, so this will be aviation heavy. Keep WeirdDave in your thoughts; he’ll be back soon. If you are not ‘aviation oriented”, just leave some snarky comments and await Pixy’s excellent daily post. Even if you are an aviation geek, consider this a buffet: just choose what looks tasty.

That picture is the “IN CLOSE” position on approach to CV(N)-65, the USS Enterprise. We called her “Big E” and, as our first nuke carrier, she had some unique qualities. One was that island which was almost as big as a parking garage. It was built to accommodate the first phased array radar system. However, with the ship making its own wind, the turbulence (burble) coming off that island required aggressive anticipation to keep from taxiing to the first wire, which would be an automatic “NO GRADE”.
The BIG E was also unique in that she had eight A2W nuclear reactors, unlike the Nimitz class and above having only two A4Ws or A1Bs. Of course, the BIG E was decommissioned in 2017 and is berthed at the Newport News Shipyard, awaiting final scrapping.

BIGE_end.jpg

For the “naval curious” HORDE (note…not navel curious—that’s a different thread), if you’ve wondered about “Roger Ball”, wonder no more! The naval aviation magazine APPROACH, from February 1975, supplied a somewhat humorous definition.

roger_ball.jpg

Heh, I noticed that page is from a 1975 “Approach” magazine. That was the year I went to Pensacola in July-August to start officer candidate school (as an AVROC I, if anyone remembers that program). I didn’t see that magazine at the time, though. I was a little busy doing PT and getting yelled at by D.I.s. Good times!

Note: LSO’s have also been affectionately known as “Paddles” (see picture) and not so affectionately as “Blind Lying C^cksuckers” (picture not provided). So.

paddles.jpg

LSO’s are like air traffic controllers for the final approach to the ship. They are also the SMEs and instructors for all things about carrier operations. Civilian and military air traffic controllers usually don’t have to worry about the instructor duties. Ever wondered what the process is to become an air traffic controller?

Okay, to the point. What does it really take to become a controller? It most certainly isn’t 15 hours until you solo, but more along the lines of “Zero to ATP” in two to four years… Just remember, ATC isn’t for everyone. Just because people believe it’s one of the most stressful jobs, only means they limit themselves before they plug in.

There are plenty of recent examples of good and bad piloting and controlling. One might think the sky is falling, oops, bad analogy…that’s things are suddenly going wrong. But, errors have happened ever since Orville and Wilbur took to the air. The difference now is that there are cameras almost everywhere and everyone with a phone (i.e. everyone) is a Cecil B DeMille. With a plethora of audio and video recordings, minute dissection of every event is now common. All this went on before now. We just didn’t know about it until it was a catastrophe.
Here’s an example of poor air traffic control at Westchester, New York. If you are not familiar with KHPN, it is the business jet mecca on the east side of the Hudson, with Teterboro holding that title on the west side of the Hudson. There are hundreds of millions of dollars of private business jets based at each airport. While I know y’all have seen the close call at Midway, it’s just as bad for the controller when the pilot asks for a phone number.
LAHSO (Land and hold short.). This could have been a disaster had the pilots not been situationally aware. They were lucky this time. The controller, not so much.

I think this is the first time I heard this from a controller(at 20 seconds):

JFK_SH_T.jpg

I’m pretty sure you will not find sh^t in the PILOT-CONTROLLER GLOSSARY.

The military has had their issues too. The recent Hornet shootdown by the USS Gettysburg (CG-64) is a big deal with implications far beyond the loss of a Super Hornet. Here’s a recent video from Ward MOOCH Carroll (CAPT, USN (Ret)). Now MOOCH and I are not of the same political persuasion, if you get my drift, but he does a good job with his channel (664,000 subscribers). You may think this interview is “too much inside baseball”, but if you have any interest in the event you should give it a look-see.

There were several striking revelations in the discussion. One was the state of readiness and proficiency of the ship, as in “not great”. Two, the known equipment and communications deficiencies that the crew had to deal with. And three, the Red Sea is a high threat environment where the ship is basically on alert 24-7, so exhaustion is a factor. Take a look.

Speaking of ‘bad”, what’s up with Space X?

SpaceX’s Starship spiraled out of control while in space during a test flight Thursday, marking the second launch in a row that the vehicle has run into a fatal problem on its way to orbit… The [FAA] agency told TechCrunch that it is requiring SpaceX to perform what’s known as a mishap investigation into the failure.

Investigation: good plan.

It’s not all bad news. Overland commercial supersonic travel got a little closer on January 29. Obviously, an old story so I will invoke the “buffet” analogy. If you have already seen it, skip off to the dessert bar.

American aircraft company Boom Supersonic proved their name by successfully flying their civilian jet, the XB-1, faster than the speed of sound over the Mojave Desert Tuesday…The test flight out of the Mojave Air & Space Port took about 34 minutes and reached 35,290 feet in altitude, with the XB-1 reaching a max speed of Mach 1.122, about 750 mph, Boom said in a release.

990XB.jpg

Good effort, but the aviation geeks among us will remember that the Concorde carried 100 people at 2.04 Mach. Not to be a shimmy damper, but BOOM’s proposed OVERTURE will [may-it hasn’t been built yet] carry 80 people at 1.7 MACH. They have secured advanced orders from American, United and Japan Airlines so there may be a future. Apparently, Delta is taking a different approach.
Amelia DeLuca, Delta’s Chief Sustainability Officer: “While Delta is focused on doing what we can today to address our carbon footprint, it’s critical we also work with a variety of partners to advance revolutionary technologies, like JetZero’s blended-wing-body aircraft, to solve for a significant portion of future aviation emissions.”

BWB.jpg

Umm…It’s not unattractive. I guess. I don’t know about all those middle seats, though.

Let’s take a short trip over to the desert bar. Now this is admittedly non-aviation but seems relevant to our “world situation”. It might even evoke a WTF?: Ukraine’s soldiers are losing arms and legs – then returning to war

Somehow, Monty Python never gets old:

I recently watched IKE, with Tom Selleck. I think it was well done, although many would not like it as a "war" movie. There’s no shooting or booming. It's about the planning for Operation OVERLORD, which remains the largest amphibious landing in history (at least until the CHICOMs take Taiwan. ed.). You would have to have some knowledge of history to fully appreciate the movie.

In a scene that could easily take place today between President Trump and SECDEF, Ike (Selleck) and Omar Bradley (James Remar) are watching the 1944 movie adaptation of Shakespeare’s HENRY V.

At one point, Remar leans over to Selleck and says: "Do you ever get the feeling these Europeans have been at this War thing for a hell of a long time?"
Selleck replies: "Too long. It's almost as if they like it."
Hmmm…

If we have learned nothing from Ukraine, we can know for sure that drone warfare has been redefined for us. And this scene from “Angel has Fallen” has always made me…uh…uncomfortable:

You?

Here’s an idea for the drone wars: but this could cause some concern amongst the population. Well, maybe do some laser eyes or something.

superRC.jpg

And if that’s not creepy enough for you, how about this diminutive bugger?

Yikes.

Looks like the Chinese have the whole drone thing well in hand. They even have ‘subtitle” drones.

Watch this incredible display of unmanned aerial drones (UAVs) light up the night sky in Shenzhen, China. All of the drones were programmed and controlled by a single laptop during the magnificent performance.

Double yikes.

Time to pack it in, HORDE. Say good night and farewell to the awesome JRM Mars: , the last of the giant Martin JRM MARS aircraft flew to Arizona to be placed in the PIMA Air Museum.

KEEP THE BLUE SIDE UP!
ROGER, OUT.

MIL lives 110 miles due west of San Antonio, 40 miles from nowhere. It takes roughly 4-5 hours to drive from FTW to SA, then another 2 1/2 hours to get to the town Paul grew up in. That is why we only went to see his family a couple of times a year, and we always drove.

Once the kiddos started arriving, we could plan on adding 30 minutes to an hour PER KID to the trip, because they all needed to be fed, watered, and potty-breaked, and there was always one who didn't need to go when we stopped, but inevitably would get the urge when we were half an hour from the next nearest town.

Now they are starting to have kids of their own.

We just laugh 😂😂😂

Career Army Air Defender here. It would take a chloroform laced cloth, and restraints to get into an airframe in a theater of operations where Patriot is active. I trained the crews to fight the system for Cold War air breathers in West Germany, deployed to Saudi, and spent six months on the same tactical fire point even after disclosing our location with defensive fires.

With Patriot's crews, training, and woke tranny operators... no effing way I'm getting in an airframe. I'd rather play Russian Roulette with a Glock. At least the Glock could hang, jam, or fail to fire. Once Patriot gets missile movement, it's time for the pilot to bail. There is no escape and the PAC-3 has well over 90g in reserve for end game maneuvers and aim point refinement. For closing velocities in excess of 9,000 feet per secomd.

I wrote those requirements, i defended them in front of the JROC, i tested them with live fire. No freaking way would i let myself be subject to that killer.

Only three? Normally with a firing squad, there's a blank round for conscience sake. That would mean only two live rounds. Seems kind of iffy to have only two shooters, unless they are right on top of the condemned.

So I don't think they used two shooters. Weird. Three still seems kind of small, unless they're five feet away when firing, i.e., can't miss range.

75 In 1986, I was a navigator in an AF C-130 flying out of McChord AFB, WA for a night flight back home to Little Rock AFB, AR. I don't remember what the mission was but it must have been important - we had an augmented and experienced crew on board, Stan-Eval pilot, Instructor pilot, a co-pilot on his last flight before upgrading to aircraft commander, Stan-Eval flight engineer, a senior FE, etc.  We even had a flying crew chief with us. I was the senior nav, and left the routine return flight to the young nav.  Just before we signed off from Seattle to Albuquerque Control, our loadmaster called up and asked the Flight Engineer to come back and take a look at something.  He gets up, stretches, saunters down to the cargo compartment...and then comes racing up to the cockpit and says, "Pilot, you need to shut down number three NOW!"  The pilot directs the co to start the Inflight engine shutdown and after it was completed, he asks, what's the problem?  Apparently we had a massive fuel leak with the fuel running right onto the number three engine manifold, risking a fire and explosion.  By now we are in the Rockies, now we can't fly above the higher peaks.

78 It gets worse when the leak grows and starts hitting the number four engine.  We decide to fly wing high and make turns only in the direction to keep the wing with the fuel high. ATC starts to vector us to Mountain Home AFB, and I get a premonition - I just know ATC is going to vector us into a mountain.-  I tell the young nav, "Keep your head in the scope, I'll take care of everything else; make sure those f@ckers don't fly us into a mountain.  He looks at me like I’m crazy and puts his head into the radar scope. A few minutes later, ATC directs a turn and the young nav commands, "Pilot, ignore that heading it flies us into a mountain."  The Co tells ATC, “Center, we can’t fly through mountains, can you give us a better heading?” Long pause, “Uh, sorry Mac 123…” You have to trust those bastards, but trust but verify.  I'm convinced that if we didn't have an experienced and augmented crew on board, the aircraft would have flown into a mountain or burst into flames, and the accident report would cite a variety of issues, coming down to crew overload and overtaken by events.

He yelled "EVERYONE OUT!" Which i did by jumping out flat on my face on the skid. He was still yelling at us to move away..."move AWAY!" which I crawled a good 20 feet. Turns out it was a faulty Battery Overheat alarm and we were good. But we had to wait for another helo to pick us up as our helo would have to be slinged back to the airport.

So I am always wondering how Ward Carrol, who likes the Beatles, got as his call sign "Mooch."

The Gene Hackman story seems strange and weird but....

I've known older people who live in squalor and filth, who absolutely will not accept outside help. They resist and get angry if you try to help them.
Their homes are filthy.
Yes, there is clutter, crap, rat shit and dog shit everywhere.
They likely have family and friends who have tried without success to help them.
You call Adult Protective Services and hope that they will get the help they need.

These situations are not as open and closed as they seem. It is hard to force help on someone who does not wish to be helped.

Could be worse, depending on ejection attitude and altitude. The first F-104s, all B-52s in the SAC days, and most if not all USAF B-66 variants had a downward ejection seat or seats. The currently-flying B-52Hs may still have one or two downward ejection seats. Not sure.

Especially those who participated in the Crypto IRAs and co-funded 401ks that Sam Banks-Freedman generously offered. Somebody might have the crypto keys, you don't. heh

I acknowledge the issues raised regarding my own compensation. As a World Religious Faith says, "Much is given to those who ask, and get funded."

146 I’m only qualified to write historical books that others would find incredibly boring.

That is all David Drake did, take ancient history and dress it up in science fiction clothing. ie: Roman Legions lost in Parthia sold to space aliens to act as mercenaries.

Poul Anderson's The High Crusade. Jerry Pournelle, Jannisaries. And so on.

I agree.

Hackman was 95, with severe ALZ, according to the autopsy report-- in other words helpless. He must've been 100% dependent on his wife, apparently.

There's a lot of Hantavirus in the SW (particularly on Indian reservations), I believe. I'm surprised it struck her down so quickly. Perhaps she mistook the symptoms she experienced for flu, as you suggest.

It's likely easy for an elderly couple with that kind of money to live as recluses. If they have no family, or if they're estranged from family, who's going to intrude on them?

The one big surprise for me is that they didn't have a regular housekeeper. They could've hired a live-in caretaker, too. They could've afforded to construct a guesthouse for that purpose. Multiple published reports have estimated Hackman's net worth at appx $80 million.

Ukrainian-Russian history is, to say the least, complicated. Kyev is the ancient home of the Rus. Ukrainians speak Russian and Ukrainian. Stalin did nothing to help.

This is why, in WWII, so many Ukrainians joined forces with the nazis, they were so sick of the commies, even hailing the nazis as liberators. But the nazis couldn't stop being nazis and soon lost any popular supoport. But that's why there are Ukrainian nazis, they hated the commies more than the nazis.

Ukraine in WWII was between The Devil and a Very Bad Place. As someone who's read some of that history, I simply can't imagine what I would have done. And I sure as hell can't criticize. Stalin? Hitler? A Hobson's Choice if there ever was one.

The dogs could've drug in a mouse. Mr. Hackman could have found a pile of mouse droppings and picked it up bare handed and placed it upon Mrs. Hackman's pillow, so he could be sure she saw it. I'm removing it, she would have been exposed. This occurs to me because my mother has done this with her own feces.
It becomes very isolating, because you don't want people to see your loved ones in such a condition. They don't know who anyone is any more, so people quit calling them. I'm sure people touched base every so often, but there is literally nothing to say. It's just varying degrees of horror. I'm lucky I can laugh with people. But maybe an Asian woman, usually very much in control of things and very conscious of appearances, cannot laugh and in fact feels Ike a failure because everything is spinning out of control. She purs up a goid front with the kids, because she doesn't want them to know that daddy is walking around maturating everywhere.

We won't know. There could be something very fishy, but I can absolutely see a million ways this could've happened.

I understand. Believe me, I do. Like I said, complicated. Stalin killed more than Hitler (though Hitler brought industrialization to killing). Between the outright executions and the working to death as slave labor under Stalin, staying alive was no piece of cake. Like I said, I can't imagine the choice. It sucked. But self-preservation is a powerful instinct. Even in shitty situations.

If this is written in the usual way, you can replace "trans" with "fake."

So at least they have menstrual cycles.

As predictable as this is, it’s still infuriating to see it. For decades, Bashar al-Assad protected minority religious communities in Syria, including the country’s large Christian population.

No one in the United States was allowed to notice this, and anyone who did was immediately denounced by neocons as a dangerous extremist. Bari Weiss declared Tulsi Gabbard “monstrous” and an “Assad toady” for noticing. But it was true. Assad protected the Christians.
The weaker Assad was, the more Christians died. During the years that neocons in the west backed the war against Assad, the percentage of Christians in Syria went from ten percent to two percent.

Now that Assad has been driven from power, many of the remaining Syrian Christians are being slaughtered and their holy places desecrated. Bari Weiss and John Bolton haven’t said a word about it. But no one who’s paying attention can be surprised it’s happening. Neocon projects in the Middle East invariably destroy ancient Christian communities, from Iraq to Gaza and in many places in between. Can this be an accident? You wonder.

Honestly, I don't mind the gross part at all. It's having to answer the same question literally 5 times a minute, for hours on end, then it starting in again the next day. It's feeling trapped. I have spent my entire life avoiding responsibility because I am borderline phobic about it, yet here I am.

Enough whining. All Y'all Morons are so dear to me.

That's the sort of thing that should be assigned to the general manager on site, as a matter of course. Might take ten minutes a day. But it would also take him around the building, and he (or she) could keep on eye on what the flunkies were doing without obviously "spying" on them. And simply make a little small talk with the plebes whle doing that chore.

251 Both of my parents had Alzeheimers and I tried to keep them home as long as possible. But my mother got very bad very fast and was combative with everyone. I put her in a care facility and moved my dad in with us. No one knows how it is when you have to care for elderly parents. It's so hard, exhausting, frustrating but it's what we do.

Posted by: Megthered at March 08, 2025 12:18 AM (IhCl1)

I think it's hard no matter what. I go to my fathers on sundays to have dinner and check up on him and see how things are going. His older brother and sister recently moved to his neighborhood, so they come over on sunday too. Dad is 86, sister is 89, and brother is pushing 91. All of their spouses are gone, its just them. Alzheimer's don't run in the family, so all 3 of them are still pretty sharp, but mobility seems to be a looming issue. My father drives, but not in the rain, my uncle don't drive at night, and seems to be hinting at giving it up altogether, and my aunt is not driving at all. Nice that they're all together, but when that mobility goes its going to be an issue for them. All the kids are going to have to pick up the slack.

You're welcome, Debbie. I always thought Patricia Heaton was funny and was glad when I learned that she was one of the more conservative actors around.

308 JQ, I think that I am well, I am happy, this is a temporary condition with assistance from distillers of old! I sure do plan on still living life for a while.

This time of night I put my feet up, enjoy a scotch, and get a chance to chat with so many great people. It is my favorite time of day.

309 LOL, Debby!

I enjoy the night crew chats also.

310 I think I may use this prayer daily during Lent. It's the fully serenity prayer- written by a Christian pastor years ago. It often gets truncated and the truncated version is used in 12 step programs:

313 If they didn't find out about our tax money being stolen by Washington insiders you would never have known the difference. I'm mad too. Everyone of the thieves should be tossed under the jail. But right now I'm not sure any of them will be held accountable. Let Washington just keep the money to "pay down the debt"? Like that's going to happen? These are the same people who took it in the first place. There are going to have to be laws put in place first so this can't happen again. These people will just come up with other ways to rip us off. I'm in no mood to trust these people until we see some real change in the way our tax money is being handled.

317 Here in Texas, I am unfortunate enough to have John Cornyn as my RINO Senator.

And as the state of Texas voted overwhelmingly Republican in state races, our Bitch McConnell Wing in Austin has happily given half of the legislative committees over to the Democrats, because voting Conservative must always result in Democrats gaining power.

318 I'm of the mind that the "savings" should be in reduced taxes. Once you collect a big pile of OPM many people will find a use for it whether legitimate or not.

322 Hubby will move to a different room next week, into "regular long-term care" and have a room mate. He's been in a private room for the last 6 weeks.

Hope he doesn't freak out & that he gets along with his new roomie!

JQ - hope you are well and getting some better sleep.

The reason I asked about a dietician at your husband's facility is: Asking them about a diet that could reduce the sources of the amonia (sp?). Eliminate seed oils, go vegetarian, increase dietary fiber ... reduce dietary fiber.

You mentioned some drugs have become less effective.

324 JQ, it's a toss-up, Hubs got along with everybody, my brother not so much.

All of the women at hub's home loved him. He was a most loveable guy.

Our last picture together is about a month before he died, it wasn't US but it was a very realistic portrait of our affection for one another. I hate the picture of me, but I love the picture of him.

Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at March 08, 2025 03:14 AM (0nHVk)

325 Hi, Adriane!

Hubs needs the protein to heal from hip break... plus, he says vegetarian diet is right out. My carnivorous dude!

It's the beginning of his final decline, now. There's nothing left to do but try to comfort him & make the most of his remaining time. Could be weeks, months, or maybe a year? (More?)

He's started anti-depressant med, and will possibly add anti-anxiety med later.

I've asked about hospice/palliative care, waiting for assessment.

330 It's been quite a while since I've heard the expression "Roger Ball." I was an Anti-Submarine Air Controller riding surface skimmers in the '70's (I was strictly PacFleet). We played Life Guard for more than one carrier, so I heard that term frequently. Nice to know it survives.
