Beautiful 1911, screaming in digital. I let one similar, all Colt, get away from we last week. Saw it in my favorite shop, no price on it yet, I figured $2,000. Went back to get it, it was gone. For $1,250. It was pristine, must have come home with an Officer or NCO from WW II and never used again.

So, range report: 500/1,000 yard match, timed. Hit to move, limited round count of 15. Idea was: Complete the 500 yard plate rack then move to 1,000 yards. None of us made it off the 500 yard rack because the wind was crazy. Even better, when came time for me to shoot, the wind shifted as I was lining up for my second target. The wind went from left to right to right to left in the space of about 30 seconds. It was crazy. Anyway, I wound up tied with another guy and we did a shoot off @ 500 yards at the dueling tree. Best of 5 shots. My competitor went first, and, darn him, proceeded to go 5 for 5. I cruised through the first three then held just a bit too much wind and hit the post. Darn. Second place.
Side note: I'm still happy I managed to hit the 2" plate @ 500 yards. Had I not run out of time, I might have managed to win outright and not go to the shoot off. Though, truth be told, the shoot off was fun. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at March 02, 2025 07:18 PM (tT6L1) 36

Ben,
What is your position on coyotes? I have a buddy north of you (Bowie) that used to shoot them, but then one day he saw a coyote run past and snatch a piglet right from behind the sow and just keep running. He hates the hog damage way worse than anything the coyotes do, and said he has never shot a coyote since that day. I think the coyotes take some of my quail, pheasant, and a few weak fawns. However, I have also heard that they also take some pocket gophers. (I hate the gophers the most.) I assume that as a horse person, you truly hate gophers. Therefore, would appreciate your 2 cents worth (and others) on culling coyotes. [Assuming this is gub thread "adjacent" and I don't earn the Weasel hammer?] Posted by: Pillage Idiot at March 02, 2025 07:21 PM (Q4Dc6) 41

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at March 02, 2025 07:07 PM (0XVad) If I were to shoot it a lot, I'd replace the recoil and mainsprings at a minimum. Ideally, I'd also replace the slide. Although the WWII era slides can take more than the 6,000 rounds they were nominally rated for, the steel they're made of is still softer (and therefore, less durable) than modern 1911 slides today. Likely failure points for slides made pre-1947 are the area around the slide stop notch, the front end of the slide, and the area around the hole for the firing pin in the recoil plate behind the chamber. Cracking or metal deformation is an indicator of steel pushed past the breaking point. Posted by: EdL at March 02, 2025 07:21 PM (AiJK3) 42

Being as it's Texas Independence Day, a fact that Weasel, as an Honorary Texan did not make a big deal of in the content, so as not to make any non-Texans present hold their non-Texanhood cheap, I must rise to dispel certain foul aspersions that are coagulating.
Weasel spends far more than two minutes assembling the content for which we gather here each Sunday Evening. But it is not just the time assembling and curating content, indeed that is minor compared to the anxiety that begins to build for him on Tuesday. Every week, the thought is with him constantly - "Will this week's content generate enough comments to beat the lowly Food Thread, and spare me the dreaded 0700 hrs EST (soon to be EDT) Zoom call from Ace, with his whining, threats, and non-stop caterwailing?" Can you imagine living with that for most of a week, every week? And we let Weasel down, last week. Bigly. And yet, here he is, delivering yet another fine Gun Thread, with nary a whimper of complaint. Doing his duty. Manfully, as a true Texan does. So, ask yourselves: Are we going to let him down for a second week? #BeBetter Posted by: Duncanthrax at March 02, 2025 07:25 PM (a3Q+t) 47

Today I took the opportunity of the relapse of the cold (somebody couldn't shoot that fricking groundhog?) to do a little cleanup of the laager.
Because, ahem, I had one pistola that was...unaccounted for. I knew it had to be somewhere. Wasn't stashed under the seat of one of the fleet here at casa blaster. Wasn't in any of the small safes or storage areas. So I emptied out the big cabinet and found it in a corner - it's a Keltec PF9 so it isn't a lot of value - but it really bothered me having a missing gun. Inventory has grown beyond organized storage capacity. I need to do some planning here. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at March 02, 2025 07:25 PM (QfvaV) 49

Note in the video the guy unloaded and first checked from the breech end of the gun.
One other thing I noticed is he did NOT immediately drop the mag. That would have been part of my immediate "Could be a squib load" routine. Get any further ammunition out of the magazine immediately. I do understand the waiting for the round to cook off. Don't yank that slide back and possibly give that round somewhere to expand (if it's a slow, weird burn instead of a straight squib) other than where it's supposed to. The guy in the second video did something I thought interesting given how much care the guy in the first video took: he holstered the gun after he cleared the chamber. I don't think it's a bad thing, but my first impulse was "Don't do that!" just because you're putting that gun back alongside your leg. But, if all you've got is a bullet stuck in the barrel, you're not going to shoot yourself at that point. Posted by: GWB at March 02, 2025 07:28 PM (zy/h8) 57

The volumes by Meadows and Clawson about the subject are now out of print. Be prepared to pay nosebleed prices and beyond for them, especially Clawson's books. As the gold standard for M1911 history and details about the guns themselves, Clawson's book now run well over $1,000 for his "big book" about M1911s and M1911A1s. Finally back to the range today, and it was far more crowded than it used to be.
My takeaway is that I need to return to twice a week sessions. Today wasn't horrible, but it wasn't as crisp as I was hoping. Changed my target to a 3 inch, and started informally timing my shots. Had some really good mags, and then there were ones that I'd prefer were shot by someone else. So, back to twice a week and hopefully next week's report will be better. Apropos organized storage, I need to address ammunition. We have a good bit, but I need to keep better track of inventory. AND - I have built up a collection of mismatched storage cans that do not all stack on each other. After getting a decent estimate of our on-hand (and planned) I think I am going to spring for a set of MTM or the like crate/can combos to keep things organized and maintain a good count of what we have.

Evening, Gun Folk,
I can't normally chime in on the late evening threads because I have school the next day, but when I can it's fun. Amazing and sort of scary how much Leonard Nimoy looks like Lee Oswald in a bunch of the HP scenes. This episode would have been from 1957 or '58, a good ten years before Trek, but only about 5-6 before LHO made himself infamous. Nice to get back to the range today. In ONT-speak, I was whelmed. Not overwhelmed or underwhelmed. Just whelmed. Took a little while to find a groove - far too long. Shot a SMLE quite a bit as a kid. A friend's family had one. For some reason we always called it a "British .303" rather than ".303 British".
The reason it got a lot of use is that his folks allowed him to shoot any of the family guns, IF he replaced any ammo that got used up. That's why we often took that one out. At that time .303 British was dirt-cheap compared to .30-'06 or .30-30. I don't know why that was for sure, but I conjecture that the Brits, no longer needing it to maintain their now non-existent empire, had surplussed metric fucktons of it. Squib story:
Took the K-38 Combat Masterpiece to the range for a Revolver Day. Using reloaded bulk ammo, everything ran fine until the cylinder wouldn't index (rotate). Upon inspection, the bullet was stuck between the cylinder and the forcing cone. At the indoor range, I notified the RSO and after a brief evaluation a dowel was used to tap the bullet back to the cylinder. Once opened, the cylinder was cleared. States generally can’t create second-class citizens, so if you’re a resident of a state you get all the rights, privileges and obligations of being a resident. Since the Shooting For Survival is an FBI film, I assumed the first bit of advice would be "Shoot the guy who can rat you out first."
As far as ricochets to hit the guy sticking his head out from the corner... why not just shoot the guy. Always easier to make a straight billiard shot than one that has to hit a bank or another ball first. On that note, I hate the shoot-duck thing in movies/tv. I've always thought "Don't duck. Shoot then wait for him to poke his head out." Or, better yet, say, "Click!" and then wait for him to poke his head out because he thinks you're out of ammo. Also, that Alexandria cop.... I think I drive down that street from my motel to go to the MoMe! Lastly, glad they showed the Combat Retention Position! Posted by: GWB at March 02, 2025 07:54 PM (zy/h8) 118

There are still some decent police turn-in S&W revolvers in .38/.357 at good prices around, as well as various 9mm semis. 9mm is probably going to be the cheapest ammo. For learning, what you want is practice, practice, practice, always, always, always focusing on the fundamentals, as someone here preaches. Outside of .22, a .38/.357 or 9mm is the way to go if beginning. As for Taurus, I know some folks who like and have had good experiences with them. I know more, including every gunsmith I know, who don't. My impression is that their quality is spotty. If you get a good one, you'll probably do ok. The problem is you don't know if you've got a bad one until it's not ok. Posted by: Duncanthrax at March 02, 2025 07:57 PM (a3Q+t) 126

Evening, Gun Thread Horde. Made some progress on my 9mm ghost carbine today. Installed a combo folding foregrip/bipod to the M-Lok handguard, and that was very easy. I had a pair of molded plastic flip-up front and rear sights that I had bought cheap at a gun show. Supposed to fit the Picatinny rail, but the slot was maybe .020" undersize. I milled them out with a file and Dremel tool until they slid onto the rail with a little degree of effort. The sights, when flipped up, seem to co-witness with the red dot from the Gaialoop optic.
Then I took my three 32-round magazines apart, and sprayed the follower and inside of the case with moly dry lubricant. Not sticky, so it won't attract dust. Then I used my newly-purchased Maglula loader to put about ten rounds into one of the mags. It works slick. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 02, 2025 07:58 PM (8zz6B) 128

Weasel, I just watched the "Shooting for Survival" video. The one arm shooting technique used for many of the drills shows the clear influence of "Jelly" Bryce, one of the original "gunslinger" agents Hoover brought into the FBI to improve agents' marksmanship skills for handguns in particular. The revolver used by trainees appears to be the classic .38 Special S&W Model 10s. Bryce did carry a 4" or 5" barrel S&W .44 Special for much of his law enforcement career. Although Bryce had retired from the FBI by the time the film was made, his handgun techniques and training methods are still very evident in the mid to late 1960s.

Pointless comment to help Weasel's comment count:
So it might amuse some of you, as it does me, that the background I've been using to photograph guns lately is a clamshell book box that was a welcome gift for new staff at one of my previous library jobs. Florida will let you establish residency with an "Intent to Domicile" form. Don't even need to get a DL or have a home or register to vote (those things also work however).
I suppose it might be difficult to navigate the firearms purchase with just an intent to domicile. And then what does NY think about it? It worked for Trump but he's a billionaire so probably hadpeople to help. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at March 02, 2025 08:13 PM (QfvaV) 159
One was a Remington-made 1911. The other was an M1 carbine made by a jukebox maker named Rock-Ola.
Posted by: TRex at March 02, 2025 07:57 PM (IQ6Gq) TRex, note that Remington is Remington-Rand Inc. Remington sold off their typewriter business to a James Rand in 1926 who then formed Remington-Rand Inc. in 1927. Beyond the name, the firm had no experience in making firearms prior to WWII. After a rough start in 1943, Remington-Rand ended up delivering more M1911A1s than any other supplier, with some 875,000 in all. They even ended up undercutting Colt by about $10 per pistol by spring 1945. By the end of the war, Colt was losing money on each M1911A1 it delivered because Remington-Rand proved much more efficient at lowering costs while improving the quality of the pistols delivered to the US Army. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at March 02, 2025 07:34 PM (0XVad) Generally speaking, the day you get your new DL and have utility bills coming to your house. That sets your residency. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at March 02, 2025 07:35 PM (QfvaV) A good choice, I think. But start with the MTM ammo crate, first, IMO. They're about 8x10x18 or so and have removable dividers in them. So you can organize, say, all your 9mm in one, by grain, company, whatever. Then you use the can/crate combo to transport your range day ammo to the range. MTM also offers some of their cans in different colors so you can actually organize that way (say, always using the orange cans for your .45 ammo at the range). But I'm a weird engineer and you might not like to organize that way. Posted by: GWB at March 02, 2025 08:29 PM (zy/h8) 194

Weasel, Thanks for those videos about squibs. I've never had a squib load from any of my reloads but have had a couple with commercial ammo. The video has it right in how to deal with them. Less of a problem with revolvers, especially single actions, since people don't usually shoot as fast as with a semi. Unless you are Jerry Miculek.
Squibs are more common with muzzleloaders and it is drilled into you to keep the muzzle down range for at least 30 seconds in case there is a cook off effect. Rare but it happens especially with a flintlock with a flash in the pan. I think the longest wait for me was about ten seconds before the load went off. This doesn't include the dry ball situation where you forget to pour the powder before seating the ball. That's a pain and embarrassing but not dangerous. I had a squib round on my .357. I was about to fire again when a little voice said “hey dummy did you notice anything wrong with that last shot?”.
I looked at the target, counted the hits and one was missing. At the same time I remembered that the recoil was not quite the same. I opened the cylinder and sure enough I could see the bullet halfway down the barrel. I was able to remove it easily with a cleaning rod. But yeah that was scary AF, especially since I was at an outdoor range in the boonies and nobody else around. Posted by: Eric at March 02, 2025 08:44 PM (a2F+C) 233

Wow. I've always thought Pythons has even smoother triggers than S&Ws. A Python would be a great starter gun, especially a pristine older one with that gorgeous Royal Blue.
(Only slightly ;-) ) Posted by: Duncanthrax at March 02, 2025 08:40 PM (a3Q+t) The new generation Pythons are generally cheaper than the old school ones ($1,499 MSRP, less if you pick up one of the new matte finish versions). The new stainless steel or blue finish are much more durable than the original Royal Blue. The new single action trigger is a bit heavier, but the new double action trigger is much smoother and has done away with the stacking effect found on the old school Pythons. And the only reason I point up the utility bill or whatnot is that some FFL folks might ask for some confirmation in order to ensure you're not ATF looking to bring him down or whatnot, given your DL will be still warm from the card printer. Had a squib load once - scary situation
Father in law was doing reloading and brought some to me. Felt like all the loads were at different power with some seeming to be very hot. This was already getting me nervous. Then got one that felt very weak and quieter - and no hole in the target. Had a squib in a snub nose. Serious PITA to get that out of the barrel. EVERY round that he had reloaded was broken down using one of the hammer style bullet pullers. Ran all the now empties through the pistol to use up the primers - even those seemed like different power levels. Just so glad that the gun never blew up that day. Found out much later that one of the grandkids had been allowed to ‘help’ reload. Posted by: PMRich at March 02, 2025 09:00 PM (a99v0) 262

I have a bulged barrel in a Polish P64 from a squib. I was doing double taps and even as my brain was registering that the first shot wasn't right I was dropping the hammer on the 2nd. Noise, smoke, and little bits of something peppered my face as the slide jammed back. (wear your eye pro, kids). I had to beat the slide forward a bit to get it back over the bulge to disassemble the pistol.

One squib I can recall. And it remains a deeper mystery than the USS Scorpion tragedy.
That's because it wasn't a "production" round, it was a test load. Test loads naturally I load very carefully, weighing each powder charge individually. This was 38sp, and as usual in revolver calibers I was loading up from starting loads to mid-range (rarely if ever load max loads). So how in the wide, wide world of sports did I get a squib-level charge in a test load? I do six rounds at each charge level in the "ladder". Happened at an indoor range, immediately knew something was wrong, easily tapped out the bullet with a dowel. But still. I would say I increased my QC vigilance but I really couldn't, it's always at a high level. Don't think I've had any others. Some early 30 carbine primers were not fully seated, so I got duds or double-strike rounds, but that's a different animal. Posted by: rhomboid at March 02, 2025 09:29 PM (1m82a) 288

Posted by: RI Red at March 02, 2025 09:59 PM (xpM9w) Heh... And I was bragging because I could hit steel at 100 yards with that rifle. Army Surplus rifles are so much fun, and so humbling. CBD, it was the boulder at 525. The one I have in my drone video. On Feb 14. In the blog on the sidebar and the LUN!
Remember Link Under Nic? I haven’t seen that in forever. Posted by: RI Red at March 02, 2025 10:05 PM (xpM9w) 319

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 02, 2025 09:49 PM (mWSu4) That REALLY should have been comment 303. Posted by: GWB at March 02, 2025 10:08 PM (zy/h8) 321
And, nood, in case no one had noticed.

I taught 4 kids (mine plus grandkids) care and feeding of weapons, and we started with .22s. Rifle and pistol then revolver until the safe handling was muscle memory. We did the live round bit until I was comfortable then the long gun. Worst thing in the world in my view is to expect a beginner to deal with recoil immediately. There's just problems that way.
I still watch them when we shoot and am quite comfortable with their discipline thus far. Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at March 02, 2025 10:24 PM (hKoQL) 323
Yay Me. I finally joined a gub club. Just need to get my wife healed up and back to work so I can go shoot.

If you improved your aim, one way or another, theses problems likely would not present themselves to you and weigh so heavily upon you. Posted by: somejoe at March 03, 2025 04:17 AM (RCAte) 325

Speaking of which..
The calendar at the top of the page got me to try out dosbox-x recently. I have a really old (win 3.1) calendar program that worked up to windows XP; but here we are in the times not of our choosing, nor particularly of our making. Summary: Got and used dosbox-x installed windows 98SE in dosbox-x three times because the writers of the install guides had no experience in actually doing it on a real pc before. Suffered many many failures for printing to the host system in it, vague and mostly unhelpful. Set it up to print to pdf and save files to made drive image. Open drive image in 7zip, open in main OS and print. song: windows intros and exits, over the years. Posted by: somejoe at March 03, 2025 04:42 AM (RCAte) 327
But, more to the point;
Why was the Garand sling not ever officially codified as the sling of the armed forces of America ? It did everything needed, and it did it so well. The '80's sling instructions for non hasty sling support were a travesty compared to the simplicity of the proven system of the '40's Garand sling. Money was not in any way a deciding factor, unless it was the quantity and to whom. Posted by: somejoe at March 03, 2025 06:10 AM (RCAte) 328
Seeing the video of the Enfield brought up a vivd memory from my childhood. Going to Sears at about 9 or 10 years old in the 1950s to look at the Christmas toys, I was fasinate by the racks of military surplus Enfields and Springfield rifles that could be had for the princely sum of $9.95! Still with me after all these years.

Hmm it appears like your website ate my first comment (it was
super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I'm still new to everything. Do you have any recommendations for novice blog writers? I'd definitely appreciate it. Posted by: index at March 08, 2025 08:29 PM (rX+1c) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.061 seconds. |
