Nobody knows how many soldiers have died in the war, as both sides have kept it a state secret. Complicating things are the local commanders' habit of keeping killed troops on the books so they can steal their continuing pay.
A fair estimate is the Ukrainians have lost a million dead and wounded, the Russians maybe a quarter to a half.
Disparity is due to the Russians intentionally going on the defensive for a year, and using the time to grind down the attacking Ukrainian forces.

My two cents on the subject is that the Soviet Union went through multiple phases of cultural pluralism and Russianization. Khrushchev and Gorbachev were relatively tolerant of the minorities; Brezhnev and (especially) Stalin were not. So it may come down to when your Ukrainian coworkers were going to school.

It's comes with nothing out of the box and you have to set everything up from scratch.
Also, you can get deep into these window tiling systems with keybindings and actions, you almost never have to touch the mouse.
I might even by a laptop and install it and see if I can use it as main travel rig.

It's going pretty well, for the most part. The best part is I am so happy with my new job. It's challenging, but I am learning new stuff, and I get up in the morning ready to go. And the people I work with are so friendly and helpful. My boss is patient as he familiarizes me with numerous new applications I have never used before.
The chaos of moving our shit up here is the hard part.

Sorta. Kinda.
Crimea, along with the rest of the kit and kaboodle, was taken by the Russians from the Turks by Potemkin and Suvorov (and John Paul Jones!) after the brutal Siege of Ochakov.
It remained in Russian hands thereafter, and Khrushchev intended it to remain there. However, he was a neighborhood boy, and as a sop to nationalism and ethnic relations he transferred Crimea from the Russian SSR back to the Ukrainian SSR.
He, along with literally everyone else on Earth, understood this to be purely symbolic - Crimea would remain a Russian lake, as it had been for close to two centuries before.
That is... until the Soviet Union met an unexpected demise, and all the SSRs devolved into independent states according to their prior USSR boundaries.
Ukraine itself is an accident of history, and its possession of Crimea doubly so... this is not to justify the invasion. Just to explain the weird background.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say it seems to me like the J-6'er, was suffering from PTSD, and the encounter with the cop set him off. But it also sounds like he was a bit of a loose cannon before the J 6 events, given that he seemed to have an Indiana record. And if he was driving around with no license, one would think he'd have the smarts to not drive in a way that made him a target for law enforcement.
I think the cop was respectful and exercised restraint until the gun appeared.

That was hilarious. I don't usually watch many posted videos, but that was great. I'll send this to my friends with 3 wonderful children.
I was at the bank today taking care of stuff related to my mother's estate. I'm in a very, very small town in Canada but it was noon hour, last day of the month and the place was packed. Like 10 people when I arrived plus 6 staff.
But there was a mother, father, 3 girls about 5 to 9 and their young boy about 3. The kids were amazingly well behaved. The father was amazing. Those kids are going to grow up to be great.
He gave them stickers. They were thrilled. I got a group laugh when I loudly commented "I wish I was so easy to make happy." Stickers fell on the ground. The father made sure the kids picked them up. He lovingly took care of them but kept them in line. I was impressed.
They were there at least 15 minutes. As they walked out, I told them they were very blessed and I was happy for them. And I complimented them on how well behaved the kids were, which people agreed.

Back then, the idea of being able to drill on land in Antarctica, or offshore in the surrounding waters was far removed from what was then practical, so signing such a treaty gave away...nothing. Now, it is possible to safely explore for those potential resources, without undue risk to the explorers or the environment. Time to revisit the treaty, IMHO.

Well Feb. is a wrap, thank goodness. Average temp here was 48.3F, 2.4F above normal. Heating degree days were quite dramatically below normal, 440 vs normal of 556. Actually had 8 cooling degree days vs 1 normal.
Precip was 4.94" vs 3.84" normal.

Well, as far as I know, no wells drilled to test Gold's "abiotic oil" hypothesis have had any success. Would have been huge news if it happened.
Do I believe it's possible for water and carbon to be heated and compressed together to make hydrocarbons? Yes. And it may indeed happen at some depths in the Earth's mantle where the P/T regime is suitable for that reaction to go.
You know what else is needed to make the reaction to go? A place to put the products. Mantle rock is in a semi-plastic state, and has essentially zero porosity and permeability. No space for the hydrocarbons to accumulate, and no channels for them to flow away to to some other layer of rock.

Two things leapt out at me. Zelensky sounds adamant that he wants the US and Europe to not be neutral peace keepers. And he wants US and EU troops stationed in Ukraine. In other words, he is trying to jam Ukraine into NATO one way or another. And if he can't get that he strongly hinted he will be pushing for a European only version of NATO. The Russian memory is scarred with WWII - there is zero chance that would be tolerated.
Trump is right. Zelensky doesn't want peace; what he really wants is the Russians annihilated and he wants us to pay for it in treasure and blood. No. Just no. The next few weeks will make clear if Zelensky is willing to come to a realpolitik solution. For now this flea sure seems hell bent on being the dog.
