I think the underlying problem with Russia and the Ukraine is how we've all fallen victim to this habit of seeing every new bad guy as "the next Hitler."
Putin is not a nice guy by any means, but we forget that Hitler was an anomaly even among dictators, and just because you don't adhere to modern standards of democracy doesn't mean you're intending to conquer all of Europe and set up death camps. This is all Great Power politics, of the sort that goes back centuries. And you don't go to the mat and adopt this mentality of "whatever it takes" for a problem of Great Power politics, you pursue negotiations and work on balance and containment. Our greatest mistake has been our failure/refusal to view the Ukraine in that context. Posted by: Dr. T at February 28, 2025 10:23 PM (lHPJf) 55

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 28, 2025 10:02 PM (VofaG) Nobody knows how many soldiers have died in the war, as both sides have kept it a state secret. Complicating things are the local commanders' habit of keeping killed troops on the books so they can steal their continuing pay. A fair estimate is the Ukrainians have lost a million dead and wounded, the Russians maybe a quarter to a half. Disparity is due to the Russians intentionally going on the defensive for a year, and using the time to grind down the attacking Ukrainian forces. The hilarious part is that now Europe is going to mobilize and prepare for war with the Evil Putin without the US, while simultaneously providing Ukraine with tons of aid.
The current British and German armies would each comfortably fit in a medium-size soccer stadium. And the economy of the EU is moribund - in 2008, the EU economy was slightly larger than the US economy, but now the US economy is 50% bigger, as the EU crushes its economy with bureaucracy and overregulation. In particular, the EU is devoted to "Net Zero" in electrical generation, meaning lots of extremely expensive and unreliable renewables, and getting rid of coal- and gas-fired electrical generation. So, you are going to massively increase the share of the military budget while the economy is stagnant, and while every year the burden of supporting the "New Europeans" flocking to Europe increases. Hope that works out for you. Posted by: The ARC of History! at February 28, 2025 10:33 PM (uxCna) 87

Consider the irony for a moment. The argument that the left makes here is that Ukraine is in its rights to suppress its Russian minority because said minority entered their land illegally and are trying to Russ-ify it. Now ignore the complex history of the Ukrainian region and accept there argument but instead imagine if Texan militias started shelling and murdering Spanish speakers in the southwest US for the exact same reason what would the media reaction be? And the economy of the EU is moribund - in 2008, the EU economy was slightly larger than the US economy, but now the US economy is 50% bigger, as the EU crushes its economy with bureaucracy and overregulation.

I predict with confidence that Little Z is going into history books as the worst negotiator in history. Even worse than me at a car dealership.
This Russian/Uke is nothing but a border dispute between two seagulls fighting over french fry in a McDonald's parking lot. It clearly is not in the United States interest to get involved in this latest European game of thrones cock up. But we are and Trump gave everybody a way to peace. Little Z rather than grasping the real politic of the moment decided to piss on Trump's leg. This is called stupid beyond beyond belief. And now Little Z is faced with the choice of being annihilated by the Russians after the European capitals ship lip service and nothing else to Ukraine or cutting a deal with the United States supported by Russia. If little Z comes around, Trump ought to tell him the terms are different: The fair price we offered for your minerals are cut in half and you little Z are exiled to Bolivia. I only suggest this last move so it gets pounded in Europe's head they are the next ones to play without cards. I watched Nosferatu and...its an interesting remake.
Eggers follows the original script fairly closely, but the theology of the movie confuses me. [Minor spoilers] Willem Dafoe plays an academic well versed in science, religion, AND the occult. And based on what he has to say, which is shown to be correct in the movie, various pre-Christian religions ideas, AND Christianity are both true. He calls out for protection to what I think are gnostic spirits AND Christian ones and mentions deities like Isis... And one minor annoyance, the male protagonist is helped by some Romanian Orthodox Christians at one point, and the focal point of their religious figures are two women. Sorry, in 1830-something if you ran into a Vampire or Demon it would be a priest or heck maybe a bishop, all male, trying to save your soul. Posted by: 18-1 at February 28, 2025 10:47 PM (t0Rmr) 141

Washington warned us about alliances with Europe - they will always come back to bite you in the end.
The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop. Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none; or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities. (Not really true, as that would mean he would have to liquify his assets. When the majority holder of a company suddenly tries to sell off 99% of his stock, the price isn't exactly going to go up. All the paper currently valued at $400B would drop drastically, definitely under $100B, maybe even below $25B. Shockwaves would be felt in pretty much all sectors, and we're looking at another depression, so, Elon, please don't get any overly philanthropic ideas.) I decided early on that I would never know what was really going on in Ukraine because everyone involved has a financial interest in lying about it.
Ukraine was considered one of the most corrupt nations in the world before the war. How likely are they becoming scrupulously honest now? Russia has been lying for centuries, why stop now? Everyone involved in the US likely just wants the river of money flowing into Ukraine to continue because they are standing next to the river with a bucket. And as far as the media is concerned, there, we have an actual choice. Are they reporting crap because they are being paid to report crap or are they reporting crap because they have absolutely NO CLUE what is actually going on and no interest in finding out? US allies in Europe -- already worried that Trump will force Ukraine to effectively hand victory to Russian President Vladimir Putin -- rushed to back Zelensky.
"You are not alone," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, fresh off his own visit to the White House, said he had spoken to both Trump and Zelensky by phone following the clash and vowed "unwavering support" for Kyiv. Far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a summit "without delay" between the United States, Europe and their allies on Ukraine. Trump and Vance are "doing Putin's dirty work," top US Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer posted. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 01, 2025 12:03 AM (8zz6B) Sorta. Kinda. Crimea, along with the rest of the kit and kaboodle, was taken by the Russians from the Turks by Potemkin and Suvorov (and John Paul Jones!) after the brutal Siege of Ochakov. It remained in Russian hands thereafter, and Khrushchev intended it to remain there. However, he was a neighborhood boy, and as a sop to nationalism and ethnic relations he transferred Crimea from the Russian SSR back to the Ukrainian SSR. He, along with literally everyone else on Earth, understood this to be purely symbolic - Crimea would remain a Russian lake, as it had been for close to two centuries before. That is... until the Soviet Union met an unexpected demise, and all the SSRs devolved into independent states according to their prior USSR boundaries. Ukraine itself is an accident of history, and its possession of Crimea doubly so... this is not to justify the invasion. Just to explain the weird background. There are some video interview of Richard Nixon post - presidency, talking about a variety of issues, but mostly foreign policy.
One of his remarks was that we should never engage in a policy that pushes China and the Soviet Union (it was before the collapse) together. They are sort of natural enemies, and quite frankly, Russia was never a "natural enemy" of the United States And....the Ukraine war is doing just that. And now Russia has obligated itself to defend North Korea from South Korea. Biden and his foreign policy team could not be THAT dumb (or maybe they were), so you have to think that they were doing these things on purpose to provoke another war. The thinking in our house is that WWIII will distract people from the coming economic collapse. Posted by: A face in the crowd.... at March 01, 2025 12:45 AM (tjZg/) 293

If Hitler wasn't a narcissistic idiot, he could have bought off Stalin (on the relative cheap) to become an ally instead of invading and making him a ruthless enemy.
Once he'd conquered Western Europe (presumably without America entering the war), he could have then gone after and conquered the East. The thing about Hitler that separates him from all the other evil dictators is that it appears he really BELIEVED his own schtick. The Jews were really evil, the Aryans were superior and would prevail over all other races, the Slavs needed to be driven out of Russia so Aryans could settle and breed..most of the other dictators mostly just believed they should have all the power and all the stuff. I think that's the reason behind most of Hitler's stupid self destructive moves. Not helped by the fact that until Russia, everything had worked out for him despite the advisors advising him not too. I'm in a very, very small town in Canada but it was noon hour, last day of the month and the place was packed. Like 10 people when I arrived plus 6 staff. But there was a mother, father, 3 girls about 5 to 9 and their young boy about 3. The kids were amazingly well behaved. The father was amazing. Those kids are going to grow up to be great. He gave them stickers. They were thrilled. I got a group laugh when I loudly commented "I wish I was so easy to make happy." Stickers fell on the ground. The father made sure the kids picked them up. He lovingly took care of them but kept them in line. I was impressed. They were there at least 15 minutes. As they walked out, I told them they were very blessed and I was happy for them. And I complimented them on how well behaved the kids were, which people agreed. Posted by: Stateless...46% - mental state clawing up from 10% at March 01, 2025 01:02 AM (jvJvP) 314

I watched Nosferatu and...its an interesting remake.
Eggers follows the original script fairly closely, but the theology of the movie confuses me. Posted by 18-1 Orlok thanks you for viewing the film, as he is finally getting a cut off this one, whereas he was stiffed by all the previous directors. But there are, without question, many flaws in the film, and it follows theology like a mugger follows a victim. This I tried to tell Eggbert while serving as an uncredited technical advisor, along with numerous other things, but he would only reply "Count, think of the visuals!" The visuals! I wonder if the blow-up between Trump and Z was really just for show, to give Putin some negotiation room domestically, and to get Putin on board. I don't think Trump is pro war, but I think Trump realizes that Putin, given the Russian losses over the last year, really needs an out to avoid things much worse. Posted by: Case at March 01, 2025 01:12 AM (xcRXq) There is an international treaty to that effect, dated 1959. Back then, the idea of being able to drill on land in Antarctica, or offshore in the surrounding waters was far removed from what was then practical, so signing such a treaty gave away...nothing. Now, it is possible to safely explore for those potential resources, without undue risk to the explorers or the environment. Time to revisit the treaty, IMHO. If only Wilson had not joined the wrong side in The Great War, we could have helped the Germans smash the British and French Empires, then assisted the Germans in crushing the Reds during the Russian Civil War.
Without the British and French boots on their necks, India, China, and the Southeast Asians could have prospered and kept the crazed Japanese in check. With the twin industrial powerhouses of Germany and the USA leading the way, the world would now be awash in free Bubble-Up and rainbow stew. Would have been huge news if it happened. Do I believe it's possible for water and carbon to be heated and compressed together to make hydrocarbons? Yes. And it may indeed happen at some depths in the Earth's mantle where the P/T regime is suitable for that reaction to go. You know what else is needed to make the reaction to go? A place to put the products. Mantle rock is in a semi-plastic state, and has essentially zero porosity and permeability. No space for the hydrocarbons to accumulate, and no channels for them to flow away to to some other layer of rock. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 01, 2025 01:27 AM (8zz6B) 334

Addendum to above: I know of one well drilled in Northern Alberta to find "abiotic oil". Wellsite striplogs indicated "traces" of oil seen, but most geologists have dismissed that as the observer having seen specks of pipe dope in the cuttings, which happens all the time, since the roughnecks slather pipe dope onto the threads of every connection in the drill string.

Just finished the Zelensky with Brett Baier.
Two things leapt out at me. Zelensky sounds adamant that he wants the US and Europe to not be neutral peace keepers. And he wants US and EU troops stationed in Ukraine. In other words, he is trying to jam Ukraine into NATO one way or another. And if he can't get that he strongly hinted he will be pushing for a European only version of NATO. The Russian memory is scarred with WWII - there is zero chance that would be tolerated. Trump is right. Zelensky doesn't want peace; what he really wants is the Russians annihilated and he wants us to pay for it in treasure and blood. No. Just no. The next few weeks will make clear if Zelensky is willing to come to a realpolitik solution. For now this flea sure seems hell bent on being the dog. Regarding UKR vs US language and culture -
The Ukrainian cultural revival around 1890 was a significant phase in the broader Ukrainian National Revival, which spanned the late 18th and 19th centuries. By the 1890s, this movement had gained considerable momentum, particularly in response to the suppression of Ukrainian language and culture under Russian and Austro-Hungarian rule. This period marked a critical juncture in the development of modern Ukrainian identity, as intellectuals, writers, and activists worked to reclaim and promote Ukrainian heritage amid challenging political circumstances. UKR VS RUS. Query grok Ukrainian cultural revival 1890.
"the late 19th century was a time of intensified Russification policies. The 1863 Valuev Circular and the 1876 Ems Ukaz had severely restricted the use of the Ukrainian language in publications, education, and public life. Despite these repressive measures, the 1890s saw a resurgence of Ukrainian cultural activity, often driven underground or through subtle forms of resistance." I think the Bolsheviks flip-flopped ending by proscribing UKR language etc. Posted by: 13times at March 01, 2025 03:06 AM (u40SM) 367
