Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - March 4, 2025 [scampydog]Good evening and Happy Fat Tuesday! Final day of feasting for those observing the fasting of Lent. 47 days until Easter. 47...something nice about that number. Unlike Biden (SOTU), Trump (Joint Address to Congress - essentially a SOTU) - did not refer to the Ukrainians as Iranians. Melania, Making America Classy and Sizzling again. Pelosi looks to have been marinated in a jug of Rubinoff gin. Thankfully nobody threw any beads at her. Na na na, hey hey, goodbye. Democrat Congressman Green... ejected! Trump wore his Mardi Gras tie. Let's get to some random fun. DOGE, Venice, Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras, and more. Flashbacks to college and decisions. 190 Octane From Fat Tuesday. That's right, Mardi Gras originated in 1703 right here in our port city. It was revived after the Civil War when citizen Joe Cain, fed up with post-war misery, led an impromptu parade down city streets. We've been doing it ever since and we mark the annual occasion with majestic parades, colorful floats and flying MoonPies. Celebrate from February 14th to March 4th, 2025! The name "king cake" comes from the Biblical story of the three kings who bring gifts to Baby Jesus. A blend of coffee cake and cinnamon roll, king cake is usually iced in yellow, green and purple - the colors of Mardi Gras -- and is frequently packed with fruit fillings and decadent cream cheeses. Hidden within these season sweets also lie a special surprise: a plastic king cake baby to continue the fun. Nobody can deprive me of the fact that I had a good time.Carnival - Venice style The Last Senate of the Republic of Venice, by Vittorio Emanuele Bressanin. Venice, Doge's Palace. Love this piece of art. On May 12, 1797, with Napoleon's troops lined up for an attack on the shores of the lagoon, the Great Council of Venice met for the last time and abdicated in favour of a revolutionary government controlled by the French military command. On May 15, 1797, the last doge Ludovico Manin left the Palazzo Ducale forever. That was how the thousand-year old history of the Republic of Venice ended. "We don't have a lot of time," the President reminded his team daily. "Four years is a lot of time in political life but it's not a long time in real life." But their traditional defenses crumbled against DOGE's new playbook. While bureaucrats drafted memos about "proper procedures," the young coders were already mapping payment flows. While senators scheduled hearings, pre-positioned personnel were implementing new transparency protocols. While media allies prepared hit pieces, DOGE's algorithms exposed decades of questionable transactions. — Ordnance Jay Packard Esq. Democrats are so blinded by their hatred, they are hurting themselves and their constituents. If they weren't so insane, they could have a seat at the table and obtain concessions or other things that are important to them and their voters. I've never seen anything like it!
PDJT was magnificent. The look on that little boy's face when he was made an honorary agent was priceless - and then when he told that young man he had been accepted (was it to West Point?)was wonderful. It was also incredibly brutal to the Democrats. The man is simply brilliant. There will never be another Donald Trump. Posted by: Seamus Moon at March 04, 2025 11:14 PM (Ab/3c) 45

I expected President Trump to call out Democrats and he did not disappoint. And Democrats obviously thought their little sign stunts and sitting down would be masterful optics, forgetting, once again, President Trump is a master of political stagecraft.
Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at March 04, 2025 11:15 PM (tT6L1) Trump had a top-rated tv show for years. The Democrats? Not so much. Trump knows entertainment. Everyone who meets him says he is very funny. The Dems are humorless scolds. While Trump can tell self-deprecating jokes about himself, the Dems are a not funny joke. Trump already knew theater, he just added common sense politics to the mix. A winning MAGA, joined by MAHA, move. Now the Dems are standing up FOR corruption AND wasteful spending. Brilliant political theater! Such a plot twist. Shakespeare would be proud. They failed to kill the king. Revenge is a dish best served cold. The Dems never thought, after 2020, Trump would ever be president again. That, to me, is the funniest irony in all of this melodrama. A self-inflicted stab wound right to the chest. Oopsie. Quick takes.
Breathtaking. This speech was more of a manifesto/roadmap of what the Trumpian revolution is, will be, and how much he has either accomplished already or has put in place for the rest of his presidency. The revolution is on and it will reorder the entire world power structure. He steamrolled the Democrats and then paved over them. That was a political shellacking unlike anything I have ever seen before. Staring them down, mocking them and then calling Warren by her proper name, Pocahontas, were Little Z moments. Do it to their faces and do it before the world. They rules of engagement are different and the Dems have yet to find the new rule book. As for the Dems speech antics/strategy. One of the pitfalls of war is showing up with the last war's ideas. The Dems delivered here by showing up with same tired schtick we have seen during the first four speeches. Pink clothes instead of white for starters - that is some innovation there. Bless their hearts, they did their best to show solidarity against everything Trump but the utterly miscalculated how energized the Republicans are at this moment. That contrast left them looking irrelevant, tired, and petulant. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at March 04, 2025 11:48 PM (tazkY) 245

The Presidential Address was VERY light on how he'll whip inflation. Trump needs to provide guidance about his plans for that every time he speaks. A new TIPP poll today shows the storm clouds already gathering, & TIPP is very pro-Trump..
Inflation anxiety has the potential to overwhelm his Presidency, & to give BOTH the House and Senate back to the DEMs in '26. Reagan in '82 got wiped out by inflation. IIRC, Tip O'Neill picked up about 45 seats that year. Posted by: mnw at March 04, 2025 11:58 PM (NLIak) 281

Well, March came in like a lamb and stayed that way for a few days. Tonight, the lion is roaring. It doesn't take a lot of snow to make a blizzard, just a really, really huge wind with a couple inches of snow. I'll give Bellevue credit: they've already plowed once. Up in Omaha, where we used to live, they might have fired the plows up and are drinking coffee while the engines warm up. My biggest worry is that the wind is bad enough to cut the power.

Trump found out that Jocelyn N , the little girl who was raped for two hours before she was aphixiated by two Tren de Agua gang members here illegally that she loved animals and nature. MSNBC's talking heads were greatly displeased by the Democrats lack of looking and acting like fools. The reasoning is they needed to show some action to counter Donald Trump's actions. It's almost like a chemistry experiment where you're mixing baking soda and vinegar together. The theory is by showing some Democrat action during the speech, in the form of more screaming, more getting ejected, more stupid signs, bigger and brighter costumes, and maybe even street puppets, they would have formed a deeper bond with the American people by showing they're tough and can stand up to Trump.
In other news, the reason Trump is winning is the action he is showing is not stupid street theater but through his policies and initiatives is reordering the the balance of power in the world. In short, would you rather have economic prosperity or Democrats waving pickleball paddles all day long? Both are actions. One is relevant. The other is utterly irrelevant.
