Can't escape the idea of 'tres gai' given today's culture but part of me hopes it just might be fathers with their young sons. Looking at some of Bazille's other works, I don't care for his landscapes. They seem almost cartoonish compared to Monet and other Impressionists. However, his individual portraits and, especially, his still life paintings are wonderful and worth a look.

CBD, it's interesting that you see two different paintings. I was thinking about how the figures look like Manet, while the landscape looks like the Barbizons (landscapists who focused on light who later trained a few of the Impressionists). Manet, the Barbizons, and this artist were contemporaries of each other.

As they say, play stupid games, win stupid prizes...or the simpler, FAFO... I was so intrigued I ordered a used book published by the Getty museum: Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture in the Hellenistic World. I'll have more for the next book thread but it is a wonderful collection of pieces and explanations for them. This is a period of art new to me. Like most people I usually think of marble sculpture from that era but these are their equal and maybe more impressive.

Frederic Bazille's work was all produced at such a relatively young age as he died in 1870 when still just 28 years old. He had volunteered in a light infantry regiment of the French Army, called the Zouaves, in August 1870 and went off to fight in the Franco-Prussian war. On November 28th he was killed leading an assault on a German position at Beaune-la-Rolande and was later buried back in his home city of Montpelier. ===== Zouave uniforms: https://tinyurl.com/4b8h8wxw Also copied by units on both sides of your Civil War due to the Zouaves performance in the Crimean War and the Franco-Austrian War [or the 2nd Italian War of Independence]. Wow. Cool. Hellenistic art is superb. The Nike of Samothrace, although not a bronze, comes from that era too. Happy reading! Another pair of exquisite bronzes are the Riace warriors, although these are Classical, not Hellenistic. They are, I think, a better representation of that era than the more famous Spear Bearer, however. Posted by: Kris at March 04, 2025 10:06 AM (EwaUh) 174

The National review wing is emblematic of corporate America. They never look past the next quarter. Yes tariffs will have a short term negative effect. But long term it will be a new positive as other countries are forced to reduce their tariffs. Mexico is fucked without exports to the US as is Canada. We can easily outlast them.

169 Anyone who disrupts the President's speech tonight?
Give them the J6 treatment. I totally agree, but it won't happen. I don't think anything will happen, negatively, even if they assault him with eggs or paper airplanes or create a disturbance during the speech. They are like children who need a serious spanking but never get it, unless we add up all the mean/sarcastic/gotcha now tweets and sternly worded letters. It's still all performative art until the arrests and censures and lawfare begins. And for some reason, not even the MAGAs in charge seem willing to step up. After all the crap we've been through since Obama, all the harassment and legal wrangling, IRS, J6, lost jobs, you know the list, we really, really need to see the law practiced as it should be, and people held, you know, ACTUALLY accountable. Is this new administration just going to wait until the left really does turn violent in a big way? Idk. But I'm tired of the words that mean nothing, like the parent who says no to the kid about the candy bar and then gives in and buys him 2 of them. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at March 04, 2025 10:21 AM (tazkY) ======== The Biden Stock Market was a perpetual upward trajectory fed by unstoppable federal spending. Except for 2022 when it dipped and Biden's team decided to do anything and everything to keep the market up. What we're seeing is a correction. A return to real life. The stock market has been a mirage of economic health for a very long time, and what's happening now, along with the upcoming GDP numbers which will probably be outright negative, is numbers just...returning to reality. The press will blame Trump, but it's really weird to have a massively increased sense of customer outlook with downturns in the stock market. Both are future looking, and we've known for a long time that the stock market is fake and gay. Head of FBI New York division forced to retire after telling agents he was prepared to ‘dig in’
Dennehy’s departure announcement comes days after Attorney General Pam Bondi alleged that the FBI’s New York field office withheld thousands of pages of additional documents related to accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. In a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel last week, Bondi demanded an investigation into why the documents were hidden. “I’ve been told many times in my life, ‘When you find yourself in a hole, sometimes it’s best to quit digging.’ Screw that. I will never stop defending this joint. I’ll just do it willingly and proudly from outside the wire,” Dennehy added. Posted by: SMOD at March 04, 2025 10:49 AM (RHGPo) 383
