From Art Institute of Chicago
In January 1914 George Bellows wrote to a friend, “There has been none of my favorite snow. I must always paint the snow at least once a year.” Soon after, on February 13, a major blizzard hit New York City, inspiring the artist to paint Love of Winter. He used bright reds, yellows, and greens to intensify the winter scene and broad, slashing brushstrokes to convey movement, wind, and speed. The energetic group of skaters and onlookers, composed of people of a range of ages and social classes, reflects the diverse populations who enjoyed the public parks and the leisure activities they offered in early 20th-century New York City. I am no fan of winter mainly because I hate being cold. The colors in this painting, however, give the scene some life and warmth. I like the repetition of red and orange, especially in the two figures center front. They counter the cold blue and white landscape.

I like the colors. Usually winter is depicted as bleak, and I understand why... being cold is dreary. But the cheerfulness of this with the bright overcoats and splotches of color in the trees, snow, and mountains remind me of when I was a kid. Back when it was fun to bundle up and play in the snow.

Morning, art loveurs,
Love of Winter? That woujld only appear among people who can hide from the worst of it. As Richard Adams said in Watership Down, many people say they love winter; but what they love is feeling proof, i.e., secure, against it. I love it myself -- after ten months of summer in this pesthole, almost any change is welcome -- but I would not want to live in a cardboard box under an overpass even in warm weather, let alone cold. That said: This is a colorful painting, with the red and yellow coats, and the three little girls' blonde hair, blazing against the white. The people in the background, out skating on a frozen pond, I presume, look rather like penguins leaning forward. I actually embrace winter. I think you have to if you live here. I love playing hockey (even at my old age of 29) I ice fish. I winter camp in the BWCA while ice fishing. Snowshoe etc. The solitude is glorious. Then sitting in me cozy cabin with a roaring fire and a book is heaven to me. Everything is quieter in the winter. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy summer or fall. I do! But winter is special if you learn to embrace it than endure it.

Appropos of nothing, if you’ve ever had to melt snow for drinking water, it requires ginormous quantities of snow, time, and fuel to get a meager amount. It helps to have a little bit of water in the pan to start, or you’ll “burn the snow”; the pan actually will warp and bend and make strange noises in protest. Also, even clean snow has a surprising amount of dirt or debris in it.

California Judge Finds Mass-Firings Of Probationary Federal Employees Likely Unlawful
[The judge] took a moment to share his appreciation for probationary employees, calling them “the lifeblood of our government.” They come in at low levels and work their way up, he said. They’re the bright minds that come out of college and the way we renew ourselves. They want to contribute to our country, he added, and when we terminate probationary employees, it hurts the mission of their agencies. *** This is just politicking. There used to be an outdoor ice rink and warming house behind Sherman Gymnasium and pool at my school, Michigan Tech. It was great fun to round up a half dozen guys (the school was nearly 9:1 male:female at the time), strap on our skates and go out to play a pickup ice hockey game in the late evening to overnight hours. That is one of my favorite memories of the place. After I had gone, they doubled the size of the building and made it a performing arts center, so bye-bye ice rink. Then, to add insult to injury, they set up three broom ball ice sheets on the other side of the same building. There are no skates worn to play broom ball, and the rinks are smaller. All in all, that's quite a letdown from how things used to be. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Imprison! Imprison! at February 28, 2025 10:08 AM (xG4kz) 146

It had been 10 years since we had what my late mother would have called; "a proper winter." Lots of snow, bitterly cold temperatures and hardly any sun for weeks on end. So far I'm seeing a tendency to message too far in advance of the situation. Publicly announcing an 8 am deadline puts her reputation at risk. Remember, this is a first impression thing which is very difficult to overcome when it's a bad one. Rule of thumb - just like lawyers don't ask questions until they know the answer in advance, don't announce things before you know what they are, and definitely don't announce things that are still dependent on the actions of another entity. Elderly crank Democrat judge rules he is now President, according to CNBC.
“The Office of Personnel Management does not have any authority whatsoever under any statute in the history of the universe, to hire and fire employees within another agency,” (Judge William) Alsup said Thursday night. “It can hire its own employees, yes. Can fire them. But it cannot order or direct some other agency to do so.” “OPM has no authority to tell any agency in the United States government, other than itself, who they can hire and who they can fire, period. So on the merits, I think, we start with that important proposition,” he said. Alsup called probationary employees “the lifeblood of our government.” Posted by: Huck Follywood Last in, first out, probie. Always has been. Always will be. Ran across an interesting news item in regards to Ukraine - Zelensky's former chief adviser Oleksii Arestovych has been demanding elections for the last year or so and has said he would run against his former boss.
The new news is his platform would be to...arrest Zelensky for various crimes. BTW, he and lil Z got on the outs when he admitted that a "missile attack on an apartment complex by Russia" was caused by a Uke defensive missile - this led to him not only being forced out of office but threatened with arrest. I guess I can see why this would be quite a wake up call... Posted by: 18-1 at February 28, 2025 10:24 AM (t0Rmr) 215

Heat of fusion can be expressed as either calories per gram or calories per mole. The heat of fusion of water is 80 calories per gram. The energy required to melt 1 gram of ice cube at 0 C to water at 0 C is 80 calories or 334 Joules. Water's heat of vaporization (i.e., water to steam) is about 7x higher. Neither of these changes of physical state occurs instantaneously. And going out of their way not to imply that, you know, blind people out on the trail hiking solo may …. not be a great plan. “No Judging, H8er”. It’s all good, you see. Bondi, Cerno, Draino - 3YearLetterman is right about the whole embarrassing display. It was a disaster and if it turns out the FBI has destroyed the Epstein files, prosecuting those who destroyed the files is not going to help Bondi. If it comes to that, the prosecution should be handled by the new AG.

While I suspect Trump's victory had some impact on the likes of Bezos and Zuck, I think the left murdering that healthcare CEO and then crowing about it had a much bigger impact. For a mini-Grand Canyon experience, there's Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo, TX, and the small town of Canyon. (Fun fact: Georgia O'Keeffe once taught art there in Canyon before she discovered Taos, NM.) Palo Duro is impressive, and its history as winter quarters for the Comanches make it fascinating as well. 950+ [ asshole ] law professors label Trump’s actions a ‘constitutional crisis’
The illegality of these actions, even when the illegality has been adjudged in federal courts, does not seem to be deterring the President’s actions. Instead, the President and his administration are openly flirting with disobeying judicial rulings against him. In fact, the President has proclaimed, “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.” We are saddened by the fact that we have to explain to the President this fundamental democratic principle, but we do: a president has the obligation to obey the Constitution as well as court orders enjoining his illegal and unconstitutional efforts. The law is not whatever Mr. Trump says it is. He is not king. ... please cite when Trump shredded the Constitution None of these 950 should ever get on a court bench Posted by: SMOD at February 28, 2025 10:59 AM (RHGPo) 365
