Daily Tech News 24 February 2025

Top Story

  • With AMD's launch party for its new 9000-series video cards just days away, it has held a press briefing and of course benchmark numbers have already leaked. (VideoCardz)

The 9070 XT is 42% faster than the 7900 GRE at 4k resolution, and the 9070 non-XT is 21% faster.

Absolute silence on the price. Earlier leaks put the cards at $750 and $650 respectively, which is about $100 too much. But given that Nvidia cards don't exist at all at the moment, AMD will probably price the cards too high, kill all enthusiasm, and then adjust the price in a month or two when it's already too late.

  • Speaking of Nvidia cards that don't exist if you somehow got your hands on an RTX 5080 you had best check the number of ROPs onboard. (VideoCardz)

Yes, all the models that have shipped so far - 5090, the 5090D made for the Chinese market, the 5070 Ti, and now confirmed the 5080 - have been hit with the same hardware flaw. It only affects some cards, but it could apply to any model from any manufacturer.

  • My 7800 XT arrived today, so my interest in all this is purely academic.

Evening and morning to all the Monday evening toilers and early morning risers out there in the vast AoSHQ empire. Yes, I know, it's a Monday . . . but compared to being on the wrong side of the ground, even a bad Monday is pretty small kumquats, nicht wahr?

It's a new era. My local NBC outlet is not pre-empting MeTV's Harry O episode with the spewings of Soledad O'Brien's Matter of Fact "news" show.

6 It's gonna be a strange week. Sometimes the surprises in life come not as single spies, but in battalions. A publisher in Seattle called Left Field (I know, I know, but stay with me here) is interested in a mystery novel of mine, and the editor/founder and I will have a Gorgle Meet session Tuesday evening. Earlier that day, too, I'm slated for a phone convo with the retirement people who handle my pension so I can tell them, "I'm leaving in March; start the money coming in April."

If I can get through Tuesday, the rest of the week will be a breeze . . . and then I'm off Mon. & Tues. of next week for Mawdi Gras and the day before, so a four-day weekend.

Looking at the preliminary Bundestag seat allocations (doing all that insane MMPR shit I was ranting about on the ONT).

Once you strip out the parties that didn't make the 5% cut, and add up the remaining seat allocations, the CDU and AfD, together would have 57% of the Bundestag.

This could be a right government shore 'nuff. Indeed, this is what the majority of the German people voted for, doing a sane, non-proportional FFPT district voting breakdown. Assigning seats this way would give the CDU and AfD nearly all the seats in the Bundestag, maybe 90% of the total.

But noooo..... AfD Nazis, must firewall. So, in with the SPD and Greens the CDU goes. Don't have to include the actual communists, the Linke party, now, but other than that double plus ungood.

9 Allegedly a surge in power on a high voltage cable in California created a magnetic field which induced a current in a nearby defunct power cable, which in turn caused sparks which ignited one of the recent fires.

The fires were started by vagrants which because it's California includes the electric company. Look up the Paradise, California fires as an example.

14 The Paradise CAMP wildfire started when a section of a tree fell across a power line at Jarbo Gap in the Feather River canyon - one of the two fuses designed to break the circuit failed to break the circuit. The wind was whipping down the canyon - it does that on occasion. I know that area quite well from riding enduro moto there.

The Chico PARK wildfire (600k acres) started after a maniac lit his mothers car on fire and rolled it off a road into a ravine.

Now, again, if the CDU went with the AfD, they could have a 57% rightish government.

17 I got a magazine called "The Fishersp from
a PA Dutch place near me, and an article was titled, "Proven Ways To Get Along Better With Everyone." This was the first suggestion:

1. Before you say anything, ask yourself three things:

IS IT TRUE?
IS IT KIND?
IS IT NECESSARY?

This was paired with another suggestion:

Forget about counting to 10. Count to 1,000
before doing or saying anything that could make matters worse.

I think this is good advice. I posted the entire list on my fridge because I need to be regularly reminded of this. Good advice for the internet age as well, because we don't see the person we're conversing with.

20 Okay, time to comment on Pixy's content:

AMD will probably price the cards too high, kill all enthusiasm, and then adjust the price in a month or two when it's already too late.

Not like NVidia is exactly bringing the enthusiasm with what they're doing.

Also, there's a lot of the market that won't pay the bleeding edge "recoup the R&D" pricing these guys always use in the beginning and we're used to waiting for 1, 2, or even three generations-back before we purchase. They know this and they've adjusted for it.

NVidia and missing ROPs

Those will pop up later when activated by Iran. Wait, that's a different ROP...

But seriously, nVidia really dropped the ball here. This flaw should have been caught a lot earlier and never been even known to the public (because it would have already been fixed.)

...ChatGPT ... regurgitated a textbook on the subject and then said no.

Of course it did. It's a bullshit generating machine, and that's all it is. And as soon as I see that predictable waffling opening to a paragraph, I tune out completely. I know it wasn't written by a human, and what's in front of me is just there to waste my time.

My local NBC outlet actually showed all of Harry O, and have bumped Soledad to 4 am and pre-empted Dragnet -- both half-hour shows, so that actually makes a kind of sense.

A much more comfortable 40.8 degrees, with 93%RH, and no wind.

Much better for walking than recent mornings have been.

Had a wonderful weekend, starting with the Church Oyster Roast to raise monies for their mission work in the Dominican Republic. Got to spend four hours grilling the hotdogs provided for those not so inclined to eat oysters. Been about thirty years since I ran a commercial grill, but it came back quickly, and I had forgotten just how much I had enjoyed grill-work in the food industry.

And who can eat oysters without a touch of cold barley soup to go with it, so Mrs VIA had a chance to share a few of both with the Pastor.

A good weekend was had by all.

Saturday morning there is one in my immediate home area, but its route won't prevent me getting home after morning errands. Then I can be free of the whole business until it's over.

We decided not to take Fitz to the National Specialty in April. He's 9 months old this week and, like all Borzoi boys at that age, is growing in six different directions at nine diffferent speeds. Young girls look charming and winsome, while young boys look gawky and weedy. The breed matures slowly, so we just have to wait.

I respectfully disagree.

AM Talk Radio is maddenly designed for the short-attention span consumer who is half-listening and is out and about doing errands, so everything is repeated. I'm glad that Bongino is taking a different gig. He would take an hour to say something that could be said in less than five minutes.

That is the nature of AM Radio.

What is growing in a huge way is the three hour Joe Rogan format, more and more podcasters are going for long format: Sean Ryan, Tucker Carleson, Jordan Peterson then things like Lord of Spirits podcasts which runs for well over an hour on single topics.

128 The nice thing about radio is, as I move thru my day and from shop building to shop building, there is a radio in each area tuned to the same station. If I start a podcast on one computer, say in my office, and then move to another area of the shop and start it on another computer, they will be out of sync. Also, I don't like fiddling with a computer to keep an audio stream going.

I've had radios tuned to the same local AM station almost continuously in my shops since at least the early 90s. Sometimes it's just background noise, sometimes I will catch something important or interesting. G.G. Liddy was good for that.

149 i've seen surprising amounts of induced voltage on transmission and distribution cables that were taken out of service for maintenance and/ or repair. anything within the minimum approach distance can cause induced voltage and it needn't be a surge. additionally static induction occurs with high winds. even this type will create enough voltage to set off sparks on a downed wire.
