Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - February 26, 2025 [TRex]

20250224-20250222-IMG_20250222_154742680_HDR.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT. You might sense a theme this week.

[Photo: National Museum of the US Air Force, Dayton, Ohio]

***

For those participating in the Wednesday ONT 2025 prediction challenge, the prospects of the Epstein files release is increasing. AG Bondi said tonight on Fox that flight logs and other lists may come as early as tomorrow. Stay tuned...

Top Photo:

This single photo includes five significant pieces of military aviation history that now live in close quarters in the National Museum of the US Air Force. Can you name them all?

Lockheed Have Blue Radar Cross Section Model - this model was built for radar testing in 1975-76. Two full scale prototypes followed (both crashed and were buried in the desert). The effort led to the F-117 Nighthawk.

Northrop Tacit Blue - The only one built. In the 1980s, this prototype was built to validate radar cross sections of curved surfaces. It influenced B2 design. Notice the thin exhaust opening at the rear. There are only intakes on the roof - no other air inlet openings.

Lockheed YF-12 - The only surviving example of three built. The YF-12 came before the SR-71 Blackbird. It was armed with missiles and built to intercept high altitude supersonic bombers.

North American XB-70 Valkyrie - The only one in existence (one crashed and another was halted while under construction). High altitude Mach 3 nuclear strike bomber.

Grumman X-29A - one of two built, it is the world's first forward swept aircraft to fly supersonically.

A few moments of Maiden: Iron Maiden is not everyone's musical taste, but "Aces High" fits with the theme. It also takes big brass ones for a British band to play live - complete with Churchill speech and WWII video - at a concert in Germany. Rock am Ring 2014.

History nugget:

In World War II, the US military airdropped pianos for the troops. Yes, airdropped pianos. Not cartoon pianos. Real pianos. They were called "Victory Verticals."

20250224-steinway_victory_vertical_square.jpg

Called the Victory Vertical or G.I. Steinways, the pianos were sometimes airdropped onto battlefields to provide a bit of relaxation. They were manufactured in Steinway's Queens factory and mostly sold to the U.S. government.

At first, Steinway was prohibited from building pianos due to government restrictions on iron, copper, brass, and other raw materials. The factory bided its time producing coffins and parts for troop transport gliders, until it was granted a contract to send specially designed pianos to commissioned war soldiers. Steinway proceeded to make over 3,000 "Victory Vertical" pianos designed specifically for troops in battle between 1942 and 1953. The pianos came in olive, blue, and gray drab. In 1942, the first "Victory Vertical" was dropped by parachute, complete with tuning equipment and instructions.

Dear Wednesday ONT readers, I give you...the World's Longest Journey by Pumpkin Boat.

I will admit to being conflicted. It cannot be easy to grow a gourd large enough to carve into a vessel capable of navigating waterways. The paddler then must churn the water with force and direction and sustain that effort longer than any other that has come before. Not saying that TRex can do any of that. But how many other potential pumpkin paddlers are there? Did this winner float to the top of the ranks or were they the only one daft enough to make the attempt? I raise a beverage in their direction for earnestly undertaking something so fantastically useless...but does it warrant a WORLD RECORD? On the other hand, perhaps these are precisely the types of things that deserve recognition of human accomplishment.

Dunno. Remember, I have a small dinosaur brain.

36 David Hogg looks like a villain from an 80s teen comedy. He's the guy that decided that the Happy Fun Shooting Range owned by an old Vietnam Vet and his hot daughter has to close at the end of the season if the Happy Fun Losers don't beat his boys at the end of the summer water skiing competition and the problem for the Happy Fun boys is none of them have ever water skied before.

But they'll get a montage. And a lot of the Vet's daughter in a bathing suit cheering them on. And there is probably a space alien named something like Meat Head (Me, Ted) everyone thinks is a guy from Cleveland who will end up literally walking on water to win it for them.

43 Yesterday I was browsing the Daily Mail and came upon maybe the most bizarre story yet (even by Daily Mail standards).

Apparently there is this trend called "transmaxxing," in which men switch gender and live as females not because they think they were born in the wrong body or whatever, but because they're upset they keep striking out with women on dates and believe women have an easier time of it, so why not join the winning team?

The leaders of this "movement" have written manifestos about this, saying their goals are to get free drinks at bars and eventually become tradwives for an alpha male.

We would glue firecrackers on a wing or fuselage with a longish fuse. Lit the fuse and tossed the plane and watch it disintegrate in the air.

The same fate be fell a lot of model tanks and toy soldiers.

110 A.F. MUSEUM at Wright-Patterson. Get a room.
Literally, reserve a motel room nearby. It will take you AT LEAST 2 days, probably three, maybe 4, to go through the whole thing and actually admire things.
The place is enormous, with 4 huge quonset hut style buildings. For a sense of scale, there is a complete B-36 in one, and it takes up less than 10% of the floor space. I think they have one of every combat aircraft the AAF/AF has ever flown. Yes, right in front is Wright Brothers #3, which they sold to the Army. There's also some planes from others, like a Zero.

Plastic model ships: Fill with lighter fluid, float in a mud puddle, set on fire, watch it burn to the water line.

Plastic model cars: Fill with lighter fluid, set on fire, wait until the plastic got melty, push it off the garage roof and let it smash on the driveway. Inspect the mangled result.

It's really amazing that none of my cohort ever wound up in the burn ward and/or set the house on fire.

In the 60s we also entertained ourselves for many an hour with homemade parachutes. Get a handkerchief or a larger square cloth if you could find one. Tie equal length strings to the four corners. Gather the string ends and tie them to a toy soldier or a toy tank, along with a couple washers or a bolt. Ball it all up and throw as high as you could. Paratroop assault!

I was actually just making a joke, as I have only tangential knowledge of what goes into an aetonautical engineering career. I do have two younger brothers with degrees in aeronautical engineering. One, after retiring from the Marines as the back seater (aka passenger) on an FA-18 (think the 18B to be precise, but don't hold me to it) now works with NASA (though his paychecks come from some university in California.) He does a lot of traveling to India coordinating our joint ventures with them. The other, while interning for NASA during college took an interest in nuclear power, so signed up with the Navy for their nuclear school. He is currently on a team that inspects the Navy nuclear reactors, and is on the promotion list to get his Captain's eagle.

As I recall, neither of them were all that particularly gifted at making paper airplanes.

Yes and yes. NASA cut back the number of astronauts on a later mission so that the total number on board was back to normal, so the "stranded" astronauts have just been there a couple of extra cycles.

And that air leak in the Russian section has not yet caused an unscheduled rapid disassembly, though some people (Elon Musk) are suggesting that the thing should be guided back to a controlled crash into an ocean so before it has an uncontrolled crash somewhere populated. (I know you are all only 29, so probably don't remember all the hoopla when SkyLab was making a re-entry. I want to say that happened in 1979, plus or minus two years.)

There are four payloads on this lunar mission. Main one is a lander which will land at the lunar south pole and drill samples to check water content and availability.

Second, there is a "micro-hopper" thingy. It will bounce around, means of locomotion being little rockets that bounce it across the surface. It's going to go down in a permanently shadowed crater, and maybe even venture inside a lava tube.

There is also some test of 4G cellular comms between the payloads on a lunar environment.

The livestream said "NASA". That's what I couldn't figure out.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 26, 2025 10:59 PM (W5ArC)

When NASA owns the satellite or space probe, the mission is a 'NASA mission' and NASA broadcasts it and does launch commentary.

Almost all NASA stuff nowadays is launched on commercial boosters launched from pads located in the military's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS). SpaceX Falcon 9, Delta, and Atlas vehicles launch from pads in CCSFS. A few NASA satellites - for high-inclination/polar - orbits launch from Vandenberg SFS on the California coast. And some NASA stuff, including the Cygnus resupply missions to ISS, launch from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility on the Virginia coast. The only booster NASA owns and operates today is the Space Launch System, for Orion manned spacecraft lunar missions. Those are launched from KSC Launch Complex-39B.

He talks about the 6-story staircase, but doesn't mention the Special Collection at the top. Full of Academy history (ALL the yearbooks for the last 65 years), it also has fantastic research stuff, like books of letters home from members of the Lafayette Escadrille.
When I was last there, though, the library doesn't really have books on its main floor, like it used to. It's all pods and such for group study. Crying shame that is.

We didn't have no footprints to stand on, neither. We had to immediately learn to dress a line. Young whippersnappers don't know what harsh is.

Holy crap! The fencers have a much bigger area than they used to!

The 10m platform is more than "another box you've checked." It weeds a few people out of the program every year. And you don't "jump" off, you step off. Jumping is a good way to end up unconscious in the water.

298 Like 4 years there, I keep wondering "Will this ever end?"

The falcons are maintained and handled almost entirely by cadets. It's a "club" and it's one that is very hard to get into. The first part of training involves literal chickenshit (cleaning the chick cages for the birds that will grow up to feed all the raptors). We had about 9 hawks and falcons of various sorts when I was there.

The powered flight program when I was there was basically mandatory if you were physically qualified. If you could physically qualify, you went. Why else would you be at the Academy if you didn't want to be a pilot? (What are you, a Grunt? There's a place in NY for people like you.)

Also, the soaring program came before the powered flight program. If you couldn't handle a sailplane, well... you probably couldn't handle a powered aircraft. So it was a discriminator for the T-41s (Cessna 172s).

And, no, you don't put on the rank of "lieutenant" when you graduate. You put on the rank of Second Lieutenant. This isn't the Navy, bro. You should know better.

I picked up a really clean full dresser back in september to do some distance riding. It was too cheap to say no. I mean 3k? No brainer. The guys are planing some kind of crazy ride this september. Not really long, maybe 300 miles each way taking our time to see a bunch of stuff. I call them the retarded lawyers, because they can't seem to pass a bar. 100 mile trip to wildwood took all day to get there because....bars. I took the dresser on that ride to give it a shake down. I was getting spoiled on that thing. Good thing it weighs a billion pounds, or else I might find myself on it more.

323 As to a balsa plane keeping one entertained for hours...
If you had a group, and everyone had one or two, you could play out the Battle Of Britain or some such. Yes, you *can* throw them hard enough to hit another plane in flight, but there's a LOT of technique involved. (Because the harder you throw them the more they want to loop.)

First thing they can do is cancel that boondoggle SLS and Orion. Well at least the SLS, and I'm 90% convinced Orion needs to go.

There'll be howls, and that's sunk-cost fallacy at work.

IF you look at the current NASA Artemis plan to get back to the Moon, it involves using Starship as the lunar lander. But SLS carries the astronauts on an Orion on top of the SLS to lunar orbit. It docks with the Starship in Lunar orbit.

TO get Starship to the Moon, which is a big payload, the plan is to launch multiple Starship "tankers" and refuel in LEO.

When you get to looking at this Artemis plan, you begin to ask WTF is the SLS needed for at all? Starship could carry the crew to begin with.

There are some technical problems I was reading. Like making sure Starship have enough fuel to get to the Moon and back, taking off from the lunar surface.

One of those "toaster-style" battery testers is worth its weight in gold for shit like that. Connect it downstream of a suspect cable, switch, or relay, and apply the load. It will display a good battery as "dead" on the remote end of a bad cable.

On the Moon, with say artillery, where you can achieve orbital velocity, you could hit a target just about anywhere on the lunar surface.

I remember looking at this a long while back. To have complete coverage, all you'd need to do is put just a small bit of maneuvering capability on the shell payload, and you could indeed hit anywhere easily.

And then when you got one with a rubberband-driven prop and wound it up until it was knots upon knots? Awesome sauce with strawberry clusters.

One time I sent one up so well it literally flew better than 70 feet high and at least a quarter mile until I lost sight of it in the wild blue yonder. Chased it until it just simply outpaced us and disappeared out of the subdivision and into the countryside. Greatest flight of my childhood *tears of joy*.

Skunk Works, aero dept, doing wepsep analysis and flight testing on F-117 out at the ranch. Saw 'Shamu' fly - we called it that.

Did early wind tunnel tests on ATF, later F-22.

Spent 8 years watching USAF and Intel guys fight over Dark Star.

A bunch of years on ASTOVL/JAST/JSF/X-35/F-35.

Ghost
as a TV show was done as a comedy, I think. But the original 1940s (?) movie, while it had humor, was more dramatic, a love story. Rex Harrison as the irascible captain, and Gene Tierney as Mrs. Muir, who buys his house and finds he still haunts it. Grand stuff.

Topper, the novel, movie (w/ Cary Grant), and TV show, was always a comedy. In the TV version, Leo G. Carroll was Topper -- and he had worked with Cary Grant at least twice that I can remember.

Morning, Puddleglum,

Yes, she passed away in 2015. When I found out in early January, I sent her mother a card and short letter to their house. No reply, and it hasn't come back as undeliverable. I assume her mother doesn't want to hear from me.

Well, some people have manners and some don't. I am now free to go back to thinking that family is two steps above trailer trash.

Either that, or her mother, now 84, is gaga and her granddaughter doesn't know who the hell I am.

They are all poorly paved and unpleasant to drive on, which is why I never use them except in an emergency. Which the Annual Insanity, aka Mardi Gras, is.

Two more days and the parades won't affect my commute any more.
