Top Story
- Nvidia has confirmed that defective chips are affecting performance on 0.5% of 5090 and 5070 Ti graphics cards. (Tom's Hardware)
Which is a strange announcement because (a) nobody had noticed the problem on the 5070 Ti before and (b) the 5070 Ti is much more common than the 5090.
Major national retailers have announced receiving fewer than ten 5090s total, with resupply possibly months out.
So this is a bit like an announcement that 0.5% of Lamborghinis and Volkswagens have an engine defect. That could mean the problem affects 20% of Lamborghinis, because the shipping volume of the two brands is so different.
Anyway, if your 5090 is broken you can return it for replacement, which will happen... Some day.
The other thing is that the 5090 is not a volume product, at least not yet. Nvidia has shipped hundreds of these, not thousands. And they clearly weren't paying attention. This problem would show up immediately in an automated test - and probably did show up. But nobody noticed.

Then you have to realize that if your activity as an employee doesn't somehow generate wealth, then the company won't have money to pay you. If your paycheck comes from someone else's productivity, then you're making them a slave and yourself a thief.
Adulthood is realizing these things and then realizing it's not that big of a deal, you can do this, everyone does this.
It's a huge problem, though, when no one actually does any of this and no one actually realizes any of it. THAT is true slavery, or worse. You're not a slave. You're livestock.

Musk's "what did you do this week?" gambit is cute. There are still quite a few Resistance II ticks out there that want to slow-walk or derail things. However this gambit won't work with most of the rank and file, only the truly belligerent ones... which unto itself is fine.
See, most every Federal employee already does a "what did you do this week" thing. Especially those working remotely. It's about the only way anyone can provide the metrics that were a requirement for working remotely. I did it for a year during covid.
Even while in the office there were weekly, sometimes daily "reports" created that documented progress on all sorts of things. Savvy bureaucrats, rank and file workers can rip off a "what I did this week" email in about 30 seconds and make it sound... fabulous.

Kinda like that treasury fiasco where disbursements were made with no line item code for auditing. You know there was a requirement for that entry and you know someone was responsible for filling it in. Just start at the bottom and can the person responsible for filling it in, then can the person who released the funds without the entry, then can the supervisor and the manager.
Then haul the Treasury Secretary in front of congress and have them do some 'splainin.

Everyday I get between 50 and 100 E-mails. Most of which I can tell are garbage just as fast as one can tell what they get in the old mail box is junk mail.
Now I have literal rocket surgeons telling me I have to carefully read and respond to every one or I am fired.

Took the First Lady to see Sammy Hagar Friday night. First time she's had any outside the house real fun in over 7 months. She had a beer, sang and danced along. I was very happy. She had a great time.

As I noted above in my dull job I get 50-100 E-mails a day, most of which are garbage. Not unlike real mail 'junk mail' but worse because E-mail is virtually free.
And my job is not sitting there reviewing E-mails all day. In fact, other than having a company E-mail, it has little to do with the job.
So, other than random political blogs or very closely following Twitx, how would one even fathom what could be spam / spear phishing be legit?

How does Nvidia know only .05% of 5090s are defective, missing 8 ROPs, which they also admitted to?
If they know exactly how many dies are defective then how did they get through QA/QC and end up in a manufactured product, boxed up, shipped to retailers and are now in customer’s machines?
Are they guessing on the number of defective dies or do they have an exact number of chips that left TSMC as 5090s and 5070/Tis when they should have been binned down to another class die and put in 5080s or 5060s?
Did they discover a certain amount of dies were defective and said YOLO! and sold them anyhow?

My hair is curly and gets frizzy at times. One day, after months of frizzy, it got on my last nerve. I had Hubbymayhem buzz it off with his electric clippers. My hair was about a half an inch long! And my head was cold! Couple of months later it was a decent length and I vowed to never do that again. Then it got long. And frizzy. And the old, faded color was growing out. I went to a salon and told the lady to cut off all the old dyed color. She was aghast! Your hair will only be 3 inches long! I said meh, I've done worse. I left salon with my hair 3 inches long, its natural color, and no frizz! That's when I stopped dyeing my hair.

I remember one of the scandals that came to light after Hurricane Katrina was when N.O. tried to get all 1400 of its Police officers to report for emergency duty, and no more than 800 or 900 could ever be found. Turned out the rest were fictitious and their paychecks, funded by a federal grant, went into a slush fund controlled by the Mayor, the DA, and the Chief if Police.

Took the First Lady to see Sammy Hagar Friday night. First time she's had any outside the house real fun in over 7 months. She had a beer, sang and danced along. I was very happy. She had a great time.
