Posted by: Ben Had at February 23, 2025 04:32 AM (mB6WH) - I also FIRST read the Israeli news but since this is a mostly N. American site, I (try to) limit what I post about Israel. During the heat of the war, I posted a lot because of news that was mutually interesting and in response to much chatter here by others on the subject. Right now, Israelis like myself here are just plain jealous of what PDJT is accomplishing. We so much need a purge like that here - in everything! Morning and evening to all you early risers and late (Sunday) toilers! 'Tis 52 F. with rain showers here, so no workout outdoors for your intrepid correspondent today. Though I do have to venture to the grocery this a.m. I hope there will be only soft rains, not flooding ones.
Last night Miss Linda and I went out to our favorite neighborhood bar & grill, and were almost the only people there. Everybody, I guess, was on the other side of the river to stand in the chill damp, watch costumed people ride by on papier-mache floats, and try to catch made-in-China beads. Debbie Gibson -- yes, *that* Debbie Gibson -- was appearing at the "Family Gras" event in the 'burbs, too. Maybe that drew some people. What're you all doing today? Speaking of Kristy Noem: Back when I thought about moving to South Dakota, I got in touch with the Labor Department there about jobs and so forth. Kristi's office sent me a nice welcome letter, and there was a large card with her image and the logo "Freedom Lives Here: South Dakota." I had it pinned to my bulletin board for along time. One day I noticed it was gone, and I was positive my boss had removed it (because of "no political speech" crapola) without telling me.

The premiere episode of The Invaders is beginning on MeTV. 1967: Big handsome cars (all Fords), men wearing suits and ties, women in dresses and Capri pants, and no cell phones or desktop computers anywhere.
A young Diane Baker (many years later, Hannibal Lecter would tell her senator character, "Love your suit") is in this one. Wow. I see why author Henry Miller thought the world of her. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 23, 2025 05:05 AM (omVj0) 39

So I read through the Verge article (thanks for linking the archive site, Pixy) and the best I can come up with for the writer's ideology is that she's a contrarian. You know that girl in junior high that would fold her arms and say "I don't like it" to everything, even to having ice cream? Yeah, that's her. She has harsh words for the Soviets and Maoists, but keeps coming back to whining about the welfare state being dismantled. She also writes as if her job is personally at stake from cuts in government, when she's been at the Verge for over a decade. Then again, maybe the Verge *is* being funded by the government.

There's a certain amount of pride and self reflection that goes into a kid growing up realizing that they one day have to eventually convince a complete stranger that they're worth hiring over a bunch of other compete strangers, just as a base condition of getting a place to live and food to eat. It's a little bit terrifying, because it's supposed to be.
Then you have to realize that if your activity as an employee doesn't somehow generate wealth, then the company won't have money to pay you. If your paycheck comes from someone else's productivity, then you're making them a slave and yourself a thief. Adulthood is realizing these things and then realizing it's not that big of a deal, you can do this, everyone does this. It's a huge problem, though, when no one actually does any of this and no one actually realizes any of it. THAT is true slavery, or worse. You're not a slave. You're livestock. It's a signal that anyone who dares think homosexuality is not good or healthy is One Of Them, the bad people, who assault and harass anyone who is. Of course there actually are assholes who do that awful stuff, and they're assholes. Assault is assault. Harassment is harassment. The point of the murals is that if you don't want to wear the ribbon, you're One Of Them, and thus directly guilty of harassment and assault. Which means no one should like you or listen to you or care at all if your life is ruined by creepy uncle sam. It's pure Critical Theory in practice. Businesses go through constant cycles of growth followed by retrenchment and shrinking to rebuild the business.
I’m not aware that our government has ever done a single cycle of the same. I also suspect the whole five things email is an attempt to figure out how many fictitious employees are on the payroll of the government. Of course any person who actually is alive and sentient can come up with 5 things accomplished in the past week - the genius of the exercise is that email went out Friday afternoon and replies due by end of Monday. - or deemed resignation.
Of course some judge will hold this an abuse of authority or some other illegitimate act - which action by the judge is illegitimate itself. As someone who is basically on call 24/7 - the idea that someone can’t or won’t comply with the directive is mind boggling and infuriating. Morning peeps.
Musk's "what did you do this week?" gambit is cute. There are still quite a few Resistance II ticks out there that want to slow-walk or derail things. However this gambit won't work with most of the rank and file, only the truly belligerent ones... which unto itself is fine. See, most every Federal employee already does a "what did you do this week" thing. Especially those working remotely. It's about the only way anyone can provide the metrics that were a requirement for working remotely. I did it for a year during covid. Even while in the office there were weekly, sometimes daily "reports" created that documented progress on all sorts of things. Savvy bureaucrats, rank and file workers can rip off a "what I did this week" email in about 30 seconds and make it sound... fabulous. Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 23, 2025 07:12 AM (Q4IgG) 122
If the 5 points email identifies names that exist on the books but don't identify actual warm bodies in the office then the manager and everyone in HR need to be canned.
Kinda like that treasury fiasco where disbursements were made with no line item code for auditing. You know there was a requirement for that entry and you know someone was responsible for filling it in. Just start at the bottom and can the person responsible for filling it in, then can the person who released the funds without the entry, then can the supervisor and the manager. Then haul the Treasury Secretary in front of congress and have them do some 'splainin. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at February 23, 2025 07:12 AM (3Ope8) 123

How does Nvidia know only .05% of 5090s are defective, missing 8 ROPs, which they also admitted to? If they know exactly how many dies are defective then how did they get through QA/QC and end up in a manufactured product, boxed up, shipped to retailers and are now in customer’s machines? Are they guessing on the number of defective dies or do they have an exact number of chips that left TSMC as 5090s and 5070/Tis when they should have been binned down to another class die and put in 5080s or 5060s? Did they discover a certain amount of dies were defective and said YOLO! and sold them anyhow? What the hell is going on with Nvidia lately? It’s like amateur hour. She's even rocking the buzz cut now with her hair growing at around 1/4 inch a month.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at February 23, 2025 07:45 AM (p4d1v) Goofy story!!! My hair is curly and gets frizzy at times. One day, after months of frizzy, it got on my last nerve. I had Hubbymayhem buzz it off with his electric clippers. My hair was about a half an inch long! And my head was cold! Couple of months later it was a decent length and I vowed to never do that again. Then it got long. And frizzy. And the old, faded color was growing out. I went to a salon and told the lady to cut off all the old dyed color. She was aghast! Your hair will only be 3 inches long! I said meh, I've done worse. I left salon with my hair 3 inches long, its natural color, and no frizz! That's when I stopped dyeing my hair. Posted by: Madame Mayhem (uppity wench) at February 23, 2025 07:59 AM (4XwPj) 177

My ex-MiL got into the show dog thing. Lhasa Apsos. It was an unmitigated shit-show. She got a breeding pair and they proceeded to have several puppies, who then had puppies and so on. They ended up with about 30 of the animals in their home.
Miserable conditions. Poor FiL was doing what he could while the MiL sat around wondering why everything was fleas, dog piss and crap. Then the house burned to the ground. Elon Musk @elonmusk The reason this matters is that a significant number of people who are supposed to be working for the government are doing so little work that they are not checking their email at all! In some cases, we believe non-existent people or the identities of dead people are being used to collect paychecks. In other words, there is outright fraud. Reid has gotten to be livid over the fact that Wallace , Maddow and Hayes , all white women, still have their low rated shoes. Cue Al Sharpton to scream racism while keeping his low rated show

I asked on X, for the “five things” requirement, would saying “I posted 1500 angry replies on twitter!” be acceptable?
Posted by: Tom Servo at February 23, 2025 08:48 AM (73vBl) 271
Whelp... Musk clarified that the "5 things" emails are to weed out fraud. He thinks (correctly) that there are accounts that are not manned by actual people, or people who are so superfluous as to be unneeded because they don't even check their email.
So, yea... if there's some untrivial number of "fake" employees then there's a real problem. Now... go find out who's cashing the proverbial checks. Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 23, 2025 08:48 AM (Q4IgG) 272

Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 23, 2025 08:48 AM (Q4IgG) I remember one of the scandals that came to light after Hurricane Katrina was when N.O. tried to get all 1400 of its Police officers to report for emergency duty, and no more than 800 or 900 could ever be found. Turned out the rest were fictitious and their paychecks, funded by a federal grant, went into a slush fund controlled by the Mayor, the DA, and the Chief if Police. They are removing Joy Reid and setting in Jan Psakis. The plan is to replace the more extreme and obvious BLM elements with demagogic ones. Setting themselves up for new battles with Trump administration.

They’re promoting Psaki, but it’s even better than that - Reid is going to be directly replace by Alicia Menendez, the daughter of “Gold Bar” Bob Menendez. Too perfect!
