I wonder when Turkey began growing tobacco??

====
Tobacco History in Turkey goes all the way back to the early 17th century as a result of trade with foreign [Spanish] merchants.
====
1633 - Turkey introduces a death penalty for smoking but it doesn't stay in effect for long and is lifted in 1647.

38 Usually I hate yellowish light like this, but since this is supposed to be a period piece, and the room or tavern they're in would probably be lit only by candles and/or lanterns, I'll go with it.

I'll admit I've never read TI all the way through. We had an illustrated version at home when I was a kid, but I remember only the pen-and0ink drawings. Was Jim Hawkins the young hero of the story, as in a Heinlein juvenile?

74 Yes, the fact that the parrot's cage is swaying suggests they're aboard a ship that is underway (or is it "underweigh"?). Jim has his legs braced for the swells, whie Long John is safely ensconced in his chair or on his stool, with teh table to brace him.

Jim in profile here looks kind of like Jake Gyllenhaal. Long John resembles character actor Alan Reed, who was the first to voice Fred Flintstone.

When I was young my father brought me over to a friend's house because they were working on the roof and my mom was out of town, so he left me in the TV room where there was a caged parrot. With very strict warnings to not try to touch the parrot because he would bite your fingers off.

To this day I don't know if that was true or if it was just a way to get me to leave the bird alone.

That's awesome, Nurse.

I have a very fond memory of reading Treasure Island in elementary school (checked it out from the library and subsequently drew a treasure map as part of some school project) -- and had forgotten about the artwork drawings.

Listened to the audiobook version about five years ago and absolutely re-loved it.

Unfortunately, my single mom never read books to us -- so we just ended up watching too much TV as kids (what a waste, although I've made up for it in adulthood).

Captain comes storming in. Asks what is going on.

270 Late to the thread.
YES!!! Treasure Island with the Wyeth illustrations was my first 'real' book. Maybe first grade. I have been in love with his art since then. His ability to use lighting to set a mood or effect is wonderful. Then add in the rich colors, in this case the golden yellows and browns, to add to the drama. Then the way he portrays natural postures whether in a relaxed scene like today's or a sword fight between enraged pirates. He always captures the feel of the words he is illustrating.

BTW, my favorite Wyeth illustration from Treasure Island is the one of Blind Pew approaching the inn. It was terrifying, in a good way, my 6 or 7 year old self. It still creeps me out a bit.

Maybe something about losing protections for hiring and such, unlike race, gender, sexual orientation, medical status, etc.

287 "Am I the only one who shared this story and spent time pondering and appreciating the artwork in Treasure Island with their sons?"

I have fond memories of reading "Treasure Island" to my kids. Many years ago, Chicago's late, lamented Terra Museum of American Art had a show of work by N. C. Wyeth, featuring many of the paintings from the wonderful Scribners editions of "Treasure Island" and "Kidnapped". These are big canvases, easily 4'x6', and very powerful when seen live - and the kids LOVED it! In particular, they were drawn to the painting of Blind Pew groping his way down the road as he's abandoned by his fellow pirates - a shocking and terrifying picture.

318 33 English actor Robert Newton was the one who played LJ Silver in the 1950 Disney Treasure Island, and is said to have used his memories of Dorset/Cornwall dialect to create the vocal pattern we now call "Talk Like a Pirate."

------
Truro story?
-----
It's true, Newton came from the Bristol Channel side of Dorset, where the Admiral Benbow is located in the story. He honestly said that the sailors & other people of that area didn't speak with the usual quasi-Cockney accent of English theater. So he used the local dialect, accented for dramatic emphasis, and so we got pirate speak. As George McDonald Fraser put it, "speaking in that Mummerset accent which kept Robert Newton in gainful employment."
