Missed it; I was reading the ONT. Evening and morning, all yu far-flung people across the vast AosHQ Empire! I know it's Friday, Freya's Day, and I should be more enthusiastic, but I'm not. Can't put a finger on why. If I were to call in sick today . . . but I'm not sure even that would lift my spirits.

491 Well, I really didn't want to be up at 3:58 EST, but here I am. Waving to Wolfus. And for some comic political relief, go check out this link from "Legal Insurrection." Outside, 34 F., wind chill of 25. Warmer than yesterday, at least. And no, I don't think it's the cold week that's lowered my spirits. I'd rather have this than endless sticky heat. Freezing and broiling are not, or should not be, the only two choices in climate, nicht wahr?

How brain-clouded must the people of LA be, to elect *that* as a mayor? Or the people of CA overall, to elect Newscum as governor? I'm up this early because Maddie, our PWD, kicked up a ruckus to go outside, which was unusual for her. She had been at the vets twice in the last two days for being lethargic and neither taking in nor letting out expired nutritional units. Her GI tract is inflamed because she is prone to ingesting chipped bark mulch at the dog park where the missus takes her every morning. "Don't let her do that!" was the medicos' advice. I woke originally at 2:00, rolled on my back to try to dip back into sleep, and big black Stirling cat heard my breathing change. In a flash he was standing on the bed beside me, purring, and he milk-treaded my arm for a little bit and bumped his head against my chin. If you have to wake up an hour ahead of your alarm, that's a good way to do it.

Chipped bark mulch? It's the breakfast of champions! Posted by: Ewell Gibbons When Maddie ingests it to excess, my report to the missus when I get back after taking her on a walk is, "She's shitting pine cones again", a characterization which the missus' acquaintances at the dog park think is immensely funny. "The average latency of a write is ~600 microseconds, but some writes take much less time and some take much more. In fact, the P99 latency of writes to the Timelines cluster can be as high as 15 milliseconds!" Oh you poor things! I remember when the turnaround time on a one sentence message sent over BITNET from Canada to Israel was over 2 minutes. I remember when echomail on fidonet was done once a day in the middle of the night to keep long distance costs at a minimum. (And those were significant back then.) Good morning Pixy, good morning all.
I'm not normally up at this time and don't know if I'll be able to fall back asleep. But I've been wanting to ask about home security cameras. I was thinking of putting some wi-fi outdoor cameras to keep an eye on a couple of doors. I've heard about wi-fi jammers, but my main concern is that whoever's cameras I use will have full access to them. Is there a way to set up a home network that's private but still allow me to use all of the wi-fi advantages, like notifications and remote viewing on a smartphone? I could go old school with a CCTV system that is wired and saves the files on a drive, but would rather not. Also, keep in mind I'm pretty tech-deficient, so a complicated network would be a challenge for me. Easy peasy, right? Posted by: haffhowershower at February 21, 2025 05:43 AM (NMT5x) 60

Back after having read some email and sending this in response to a fund raising appeal -- I do wish to voice my displeasure with { charity's nsme } lowering itself to adopt the all too ubiquitous "Days of Giving" sales pitch lede for soliciting support. The "Days of Giving" moniker, ever since its introduction during the Obama Administration, has become a universal catch-all appellation for fund raising appeals, and as such, it exudes both venality and insincerity. Perhaps "Days of Giving" appeals satisfy those for whom giving freely to charitable causes is not their routine practice because they view paying taxes as the route to being charitable and they thereby cede to a government the decision as to which causes are worthy of support. I imagine that such people are also keen to allow commercial firms to "round up" their purchases' total to the nearest whole dollar amount and pool that pittance with others into a substantial donation to an anonymous charity of someone else's choosing. Even when i was a Bible bashing, Jesus hating kid freshly minted from the state mandated idiot factory, there was something about that Charles Stanley guy i liked. He seemed like what a televangelist ought to be. Not a gurning huckster with greasy hair and 0xFFFFFF chicklet teeth talking about nothing but money, just a dude honestly preaching what he believed about how the world is made, and saying "sure, give me a couple bucks if you want, buy some of our stuff maybe, or not, whatever".
And he preached with his eyes wide open. Nothing says fraud to me more than someone who thinks squinting really hard makes them look more sincere. I've seen philosophy professors pull that trick, too, while rhapsodizing about po-mo claptrap or the labor theory of value. The harder the squint, the bigger the lie. Far more punch than you need for monitoring doors, but I have had great success with a 4K PTZ Camera from HXVIEW. Has 30X optical zoom, 2-way audio WiFi or wired, has auto tracking of people/vehicles and operates at 2.4 and 5GHz. Comes with an app, has on-camera storage and has been very good at alerting me when it sees vehicles a/o humans while ignoring critters. I can sit at my desk and monitor a live-feed, have it tied to alerts so I can be notified when things fall into its field of view and the data are accessed remotely if necessary. Mine is hard-wired since I had to run power to the camera anyway. There are other cameras and devices but the details.... OPSEC. (2/2) For the other half of the country who choose to take a more personal role in how they practice charity, a "Days of Giving" tag conveys a sense of being manipulative. It sends a clear and distinct wave off signal to not take part in any campaign so identified. Do a better job of reading your room, please. Look into a (Network Video Recorder or NVR) system. You can disable the WiFi if your concerned about that and it will just record video continuously on the HD card. I think the loop is 12 hours. The cost will be a function of camera resolution. Most systems are plug and play and the only real challenge is running the cable from the box to the camera. if there is "an app" for a wi-fi camera, I assume it to be spyware, streaming my images back to Mother China.
years ago I bought a few Wyze wi-fi cams and rooted them using open-source 3rd party firmware ... I'll remember the name sometime soon, I'm sure ... but I was interested in getting live video from them so I could see around the property, and that was only through the app. now it's a stream available at 192.168.x.x recordings are nice sometimes, after the fact, I suppose ... years ago, like I said; probably it's all different now, but a search string like "root wifi camera" (or variations) will probably come up with it ... The nutbars practically stormed the White House around the time of St. Floyd iirc. The president was secured in the bunker - and the press called him a coward. The mob tried to burn down an historic church, etc. The gaslighting in the media is really beyond belief.

-------- Maybe see who does surveying in that area... or who did. They may have records. The layout of my septic system isn't in any system other than a hand drawn diagram... filed with the county health department. 25 years ago. Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 21, 2025 07:34 AM (Q4IgG) 206

Surveyor is the way to go. My quit claim was to clear the title on the river property (and the property lines there are a mess). Have you checked for Corp of Engineers' maps of the place? If it's in a flood plain, it should be mapped out.

Penguinsix is an interesting YouTube channel.
Don't know his real name, but he's a DC photojournalist who posts fairly short daily videos about whatever is happening in DC , be it local crime or world politics. He's credentialed so he gets into the White House press briefings. He also throws out little historical tidbits as he drives around. And always chronicles his fast food stops.
