  • Nvidia's RTX 5070 Ti is here and I've found my next video card. (Techspot)

Though those two items are not related. Or more precisely, they are inversely related.

Not that the 5070 Ti is a bad card, certain items ignored. It is fast, it has plenty of VRAM for almost anything at 16GB, and it, uh, mostly works.

The problem is the price. It was announced with a price of $750, and officially that is still the price. The problem is there is no official card. There was even a drama when Nvidia shipped a particular Asus card to reviewers, stating that it was an official launch card priced at $750, when Asus sent the exact same card to other reviewers, saying that it was not an official launch card and was priced at $900.

That appears to have ended with Nvidia either bribing or coercing Asus into selling the card at $750, which simply means that it won't exist.

But that's going to be true of all 5070 Ti cards, just as it is with the 5090 and 5080 a month after their launch.

If you can find one at MSRP, expect to pay $900 to $1000. Which, yes, is nominally the same price as the 5080. But the 5080 will actually set you back over $2000 right now if you can even find one. And the 5070 Ti has the same GPU chip just with some shaders disabled, and the same RAM, so... I'm sure you can figure it out.

Meanwhile in Australia there are only a handful of listings up but they're in the A$1900 to A$2000 range.

What I actually bought - just this morning - was an AMD Radeon 7800 XT. It's also a 16GB card, and while the new 5070 Ti is 50% faster while using only 20% more power, the Radeon cost me A$729 - about US$400 plus tax - making the 5070 Ti 150% more expensive.

Do I care that the 5070 Ti can run Counter Strike at 332fps instead of 257fps on the 7800 XT? A lot less than I care about the $1200 that will pay for the rest of my computer.

Oh, and if you're playing an older 32-bit game using PhysX, it could run at about a quarter speed because Nvidia cards just don't support that anymore.

So, no. Hell no. I decided it was time to stop waiting before every reasonably-priced card disappeared from the market entirely.

Ordered that 7800 XT and a 7900 (non-x) CPU. Still need a motherboard and some DDR5 RAM, but those aren't in a price/availability death spiral right now.

8 "USPS has seen a 80% DECREASE in volume of mail but ADDED 190,000 employees"

I don't know where the added employees are at, cause every time I go into a Post Office, half the counters are unmanned.
And the Carriers are always saying that they can't keep people on payroll.

Plus, the amount of mis-delivered mail continues to climb.

Same with missing/stolen mail.

So maybe mail in voting would help.

I just looked them up on Newegg. For some reason they're much cheaper and more readily available in Australia. Maybe they've already been cleaned out in the US by people doing what I did; the cheapest model I could see cost 40% more than I paid.

Not cheap, but compared to what's being released right now it feels like it came from the five-and-dime.

I think we're going to have a few years of having to sort things out and come to terms with some BS, but it will have to eventually level out. By that I mean we're already dealing with American companies that pretend that their cars, trucks, etc. are made in America and they charge American labor prices for them, and they were doing it to pocket the difference. No one got a cheaper Silverado just because Jose made it for $13 in Mexico. They still paid $60K for that truck.

I think Americans will support Americans, especially with good jobs and products. "We've tried the other side and it got us here, so let's try the American made side again" hopefully.

And let gumball machine plastic crap that can be made by Chinese slaves continue to be made by them, same as always. But important stuff like medicines? We need to be making that here, or paying Chinese slave prices. One or the other.

81 There's a cooperative mechanism in "pure capitalism" (if you want to call it that) where it is in a company's own best interest to prioritize employee pay over nearly everything else. The more you pay them, the more of your stuff they can afford to buy. And the more of other company's stuff they can buy. And the more other company's pay their people, the more they can afford of your product and everyone else's.

And the more of everything everyone sells, the more money you can take in as actual tangible profit backed by actual tangible wealth, as opposed to finagling numbers on a balance sheet and sucking the wealth out of your own firm like a parasite.

It kind of works like that for the leeches and mites of government, too. 50% of a dirt clod to make everyone hate you is a miserable take when you could have had 10% of a mountain that loves you.

Yep. And Our Betters got together somewhere around the 70s - right after they killed JFK and put the U.S. on the path to 2020 - and decided to export our jobs and import an illegal worker underclass, all to weaken the middle. Who just kept right on being Americans and "figuring it out," watching our dollar's value decline and the new requirement for both parents to wage-slave increase, and the entire time assuming the politicians loved America, too. And we were wrong. It was always just a trough for the people in office and the folks in charge above them.

The mid-70s really does appear to be key to a lot of things. Interesting article here:

97 Yeah the Radeon 7800XT is usually around $580 on Amazon and Newegg last I checked.

That’s AMD’s mid-range 1440p with some 4K/2160p card. The 16GB VRAM is the most important part.

The 7700XT is cheaper but only has 12GB.

The 7600XT is even cheaper at around $325, has the 16GB but only a 192 bit bus so it’s meant for 1080p & 1440p.

I like the new AMD 9070 and 9070XT coming out next week. They will both have 16GB but if they’re priced at $659 and $759 like the rumors suggest then AMD is shooting themselves in the foot again with their pricing.

Lower those prices by $100 each and they could have some winners on their hands if the performance is at 5070 & 5070Ti levels.

We’ll know how much AMD plans to screw up Radeon, again, in a few days.

143 The Humane AI pin was made by a group of former Apple employees.

My thoughts are that these guys brought this idea to Apple, Tim Cook thought it was a terrible idea that would cut into iPhone sales if they even sold so no, we won’t have an “Cloud AI device pinned to your shirt with an Apple logo on it. Thanks, no thanks, get back to work.”

The guys, told themselves that Tim Cook is wrong (and gay) so they packed their bags and found an Angel investor, probably their own Apple stock, and started Humane AI with the sole intention of making a glorified tech demo, putting on sale, watching it get destroyed in every review for its uselessness, and cash in when a big tech firm buys them out.

…which is exactly what happened.

The developers can constrain the AI to provide the answers it wants. The 'value', if you will, is in training humanity to accept, without question, the answers provided. Many, perhaps most, will do so through some combination of stupidity and lack of intellectual curiosity. This will provide the control mechanism that the globalist aristocracy craves.

159 I've tried using AI, once again yesterday. It came back with the same answers I had already found. At least it wasn't wrong this time, but I would not have known for sure without doing the research myself. I fail to see the value.

I'm noticing that CoPilot is less likely now than it was earlier of providing receipts to its search process. That is, earlier (like a year ago) every response had a reference or several to where it found these nuggets of internet "truth".

More often now, it leaves its trail off like we are supposed to be conditioned by now to believe it.

I liked the references, it gave me a chance to see whose website was ransacked by the crawler, and what yahoo published the "training data" inadvertently on their webpage.

I'm waiting for the day when AI can transcribe How-To YouTube videos and use that for training data so when I photograph a part and say this broke off of my dishwasher, it can tell me where to get the part and how to properly install it.

I can agree with that statement. Amazon, like many other companies have invested billions into their inventory and management systems on a relentless pursuit of reducing losses.

The weak link, the USPS does the exact opposite. They spend billions on those who contribute to package loss and mismangement.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at February 20, 2025 07:08 AM (BLOW1)

Good question.
GPU pricing is so out of whack it’s unreal.

I know why Nvidia keeps their prices so high and stock so low, AI boom + Crypto-Craze hangover where people are willing to pay double or triple the price of the same class of GPU from two or three generations back.

But AMD? Always playing catch-up with Nvidia and still will only drop the price on similar spec models by around $50-$100. Plus they will give you more VRAM in a few models.

I think AMD knows they’ll sell at higher prices in the U.S. because a lot of people will refuse to pay the Nvidia tax for some ray tracing & CUDA cores. So they can charge an extra $100 here and get away with it.

Where else are you going to go?
Intel Arc?

I don’t expect AMD to lower prices on the 7000 series until the full 9000 series is out, like they did for the 6000 series which became the “low-end”,

210 I'm quite happy with my Sapphire 7800 XT. It has good performance in everything I play, runs local AI stuff reasonably fast (even without official rocm support), stays cool, isn't too loud, no bugs or rendering errors... Of course, I'm on Linux, using the open source drivers, which are probably better than the official Windows ones from AMD. And I have a 1440 screen and run things in a slightly smaller window.

The only real downsides are that I can't run Cyberpunk in full path tracing mode, and it came with a free copy of Starfield.
