Hollywood Hits Peak Woke/Broke as Captain America Projected to See Huge 70% Second-Weekend Dropoff After Flop Opening

Before that: All the wokies infesting Disney are angry at Bob Iger for making some very small walkbacks of illegal DEI practices, and for "capitulating" to Trump.

Walt Disney insiders are furious with CEO Bob Iger over his perceived "capitulation" on DEI initiatives as well as its recent settlement of a lawsuit involving ABC News host George Stephanopoulos brought by President Trump, according to a report.

"This is not what I expected from Bob -- I thought he had our back," a company insider told Deadline, adding: "What's next? Where do we go from here? What do we stand for now, keeping MAGA happy?"

Disney is restructuring its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs to focus more on business outcomes, replacing the "Diversity & Inclusion" executive performance factor with a broader "Talent Strategy" and rebranding employee groups to emphasize workplace belonging.

Additionally, the company has removed the autoplay content advisories warning about outdated depictions in older films like "Dumbo" and "Peter Pan" -- moving them to the details section instead.

These changes reflect the pressure that corporations face in adapting to evolving political expectations, particularly under the Trump administration's renewed push against DEI initiatives.

...

Some Disney employees were also unhappy over Iger's decision to agree to a $16 million payout to Trump as part of a settlement of a defamation lawsuit that was brought against ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos.

One person described by Deadline as a "well-positioned individual" within the company called the decision to settle an "embarrassment" and "the beginning of the capitulation."

...

Disney employees who spoke to Deadline also expressed frustration with a company decision to remove a transgender-themed storyline from its upcoming Pixar series "Win or Lose," altering dialogue and content to align with new internal directives.

The transgender character remains in the show, but references to gender identity were cut, and content disclaimers have also been adjusted.

Adding to the speculation about Disney's direction, Iger's low-profile presence at the Hollywood premiere of "Captain America: Brave New World" raised eyebrows.

Unlike past appearances, the CEO, who normally poses on the red carpet with film stars and the creative team, avoided public interactions.

He might be distancing himself from the movie because he knew it would fail.

Or he might have been trying to protect the movie from his own stink of failure.

The new Captain America movie got a B- score from the post-movie pollsters at Cinemascore. This is the lowest score recorded for any Marvel movie.

Furthermore, it's a bad score overall -- anything lower than a "B" (from people who wanted to see the movie and made the effort to go pay to see it) indicates a bad movie that will have short "legs" as word of mouth gets out.

(Only horror movies can have lower Cinemascores and still wind up making a nice profit.)

Disney shills are claiming this movie made $100 million in its "opening weekend." Well, they count Thursday shows as part of "the weekend," and last weekend was a holiday weekend, so they're counting a full five days of ticket sales as "weekend" box office.

The movie didn't make $100 million over the weekend, it made $87.5 million. And that still includes Thursday as a "weekend" day.

The movie will not make $500 million in total global sales, which means the movie, which probably cost $250 million or more, will be another Marvel failure. (Remember, theaters take about 40% of the gross ticket sales.)

Box office projections call for Captain America to make $30 million this weekend. A drop of 70%.

The legacy media called it a $100 million opening weekend, and despite their sneaky use of five-days to count as a "first weekend", we're holding them to it. As a result, Captain America: Brave New World is on track for one of the steepest second-weekend drops in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Projections indicate that the film will plummet around 70% in domestic earnings, bringing in just over $30 million in its sophomore frame. If this trajectory holds, its worldwide haul for the second weekend will struggle to surpass $50 million, putting its long-term prospects in jeopardy. Should the film fail to reach the crucial $400 million global benchmark as it winds down its theatrical window, it will go down as one of Marvel Studios' biggest misfires and an outright embarrassment for the once-unshakable franchise.

Only The Marvels had a bigger drop, falling 78% in its sophomore weekend.

Now, eagle-eyed DOGE Math Ninjas will notice that I'm using the $100 million four-day opening weekend number, rather than the $87.5 three day figure to calculate the second weekend box office.

But the leftwing Disney-boosting media keeps insisting the movie made $100 million it its opening weekend. They should be allowed to then change that opening weekend box office to make the second weekend box office drop look better.

In more Woke Hollywood news, it's the end of an era for James Bond. The Broccoli family, which produced every singe official EON James Bond film from Dr. No to the last one (whatever it was) has been pushed aside by Jeff Bezos.

Jeff Bezos, who's brought us banger after banger like Rings of Power and Wheel of Time.

I am not optimistic.

It's taking around $1 billion to have 007 stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson cede creative oversight of their family's storied James Bond franchise to Amazon MGM Studios, sources tell us.

Amazon originally overpaid on its purchase of MGM in a deal orchestrated by then-MGM board chair Kevin Ulrich. Though valued between $3.5 billion-$4 billion, the legendary motion picture studio was absorbed by the streamer for $8.5 billion, the hefty sum propped up by the potential access of the 007 franchise. However, Amazon couldn't fully freely develop Bond with Broccoli and Wilson in the mix. Hence, it took another $1 billion to ensure that they could fully steer and exploit the Ian Fleming IP.

Details on what makes up the new $1 billion deal is unknown at this time, and whether it includes Amazon stock options; the deal for Amazon MGM to take full creative command of Bond hasn't closed yet, we're told, while Amazon MGM Studios declined comment for this story. The expectation from sources is that there will be an element of shared economy in the movies going forward.

Now, the Broccoli family has been pushing wokeness in Bond for 20+ years, and has been crapping out very repetitive and subpart entries for a long time now, so maybe this is just a lateral move from "crap" to "poop."

Could Bezos possibly be so stupid to continue the woke messaging with his new ten billion dollar investment?

I think he probably could.

Back to Disney: Does Disney have any other high-profile sure-winner movies coming out after Captain America to save them?

Oh boy, do they! Coming on March 21st, they threatened:

Thanks to Soothsayer.

NBCUniversal has agreed to settle a $30 million defamation suit filed by a Georgia gynecologist after on-air talents - including Rachel Maddow - falsely labeled him a 'uterus collector.'

Dr. Mahendra Amin sued in September 2021 after NBCU hosts like MSNBC's Maddow reported claims he performed 'mass hysterectomies' on ICE center detainees with impunity - allegations that later turned out to be false.

Documents filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of Georgia Thursday show how MSNBC's parent has since agreed to settle - with talks about a number now underway.

27 Could Bezos possibly be so stupid to continue the woke messaging with his new ten billion dollar investment?

=======

My main sense of optimism (which is not a large sense, mind you), is that Amazon recently discarded all work on the God of War series adaptation and brought in Ronald D. Moore to start from scratch.

Moore, who's been doing Outlander for a decade, was the guy who made new Battlestar Galactica and was a main writer in the final few seasons of ST:TNG.

It's hard to read much into this other than: Amazon didn't like where God of War was, thought they couldn't get anything from what was done, and brought in a practiced hand to do better.

Could it be that the original team went woke nonsense and the Amazon execs said, "No more. We've seen enough red ink from Rings of Power"? Maybe.

As I said, it's not a high hope of optimism. But it's something.

30 What would make for a good spy movie these days?

Back in the early James Bond era, during the height of the Cold War, you had the competing powers of the USA and the Soviet Union and the intrigue between them with Britain caught in the middle, but mostly on the side of the USA.

How would a modern spy movie work?

31 Since it unexpectedly lost some of its premium large format screens (aka the pricey ones) to new openers this weekend (b/c it didn't do well last weekend), Cap 4 is likely to only make $27-$28M for the weekend...which would still be the same 69-70% drop.

So. Disney figures they might as well stick with the top level spin...$30M seems less bad than $27-28M...

There was a pretty popular thread in response, calling for the casting of Henry Cavill (harkening back to that old Sean Connery look), having a soundtrack that would evoke the '60s and '70s, and an unknown European actress for the next Bond girl. And more spy-oriented than heavy-hitting.

Probably none of which will happen.

-

Telling a story.

Imagine a well written realistic movie with the men getting in dangerous situations and occasionally needing to punch their way out and the women getting in dangerous situations solely to poison someone.

But no super powers, and no John Wick luck/suicidal drive (full disclosure: John Wick I is one of my favorite movies).

Just people doing jobs to achieve a mission that other people are involved in and depending on them for to accomplish a critical task in part of a bigger plot that doesn't have to be part of the movie. We don't have to save the world from the giant laser beam weapon. We just need to secure this package, or get this code, etc.

I think men and women would enjoy a realistic film like that.

Authors sell movie rights to producers all the time

...

yeah Fleming just sold the rights. He was always all about selling the rights.

There' s a fun story about his involvement in Man From UNCLE. Basically, Fleming thought he could just lend his name as part of the development team and they would pay him for that. They didn't go for that, they wanted to pay him for actual contributions, and they parted ways after he gave them a few suggestions. Like the name Napoleon Solo. I don't think he contributed much beyond that.

86 Disney shills are claiming this movie made $100 million in its "opening weekend." Well, they count Thursday shows as part of "the weekend," and last weekend was a holiday weekend, so they're counting a full five days of ticket sales as "weekend" box office.

The movie didn't make $100 million over the weekend, it made $87.5 million. And that still includes Thursday as a "weekend" day.

We have no idea if this 'Disney insider' is real, or if that is what they really said.

I was once interviewed by a Military paper... who absolutely mis portrayed the point I was trying to make by selectively editing what I said... partly out of trying to make their point, but also because the reporter heard what they wanted to hear, and was not intelligent enough to understand the point I was trying to make.

Sources should be named. We IMPEACHED a US President, or false, and anonymous, accusations.

The story is premised on jealousy over Snow White's beauty. So right off the bat they are sabotaging themselves.
Posted by: PaleRider

============

I don't know how in hell they worked out the logic for this in the movie, but the ORIGINAL story is premised over Snow White's beauty. In the woke update, "the fairest" refers to the "most just." Somehow, the evil queen is intent on being the most just person in the queendom, and she gets rattled that someone else is consider more equitable and fair. Somehow, a queen obsessed with justice -- and who consults of all things a mirror to check up on her status -- finds out about a better champion of justice and wants to kill them instead of consulting or promoting them.

Again, I don't know how in hell this is worked out in the new, improved plot. It follows no psychological or intellectual logic at all.

Yup, anonymous sources took off like a rocket in 2017.

It had been creeping that way for awhile but not too long ago, if you were going to use an anonymous story you had to verify it with a few other sources as well.

Now, anybody can say anything anonymously "because they haven't been authorized to speak on the subject" or "for fear of retribution", apparently.

180 Operation Mincemeat was a successful British deception operation of the Second World War to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. Two members of British intelligence obtained the body of Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, dressed him as an officer of the Royal Marines and placed personal items on him identifying him as the fictitious Captain (Acting Major) William Martin. Correspondence between two British generals that suggested that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia, with Sicily as merely the target of a feint, was also placed on the body.

Part of the wider Operation Barclay, Mincemeat was based on the 1939 Trout memo, written by Rear Admiral John Godfrey, the Director of the Naval Intelligence Division, and his personal assistant, Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming. With the approval of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, and the American military commander in the Mediterranean, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the plan began by transporting the body to the southern coast of Spain by submarine and releasing it close to shore, where it was picked up the following morning by a Spanish fisherman. On 29 September 1939, soon after the start of the Second World War, Rear Admiral John Godfrey, the Director of Naval Intelligence, circulated the Trout memo, a paper that compared the deception of an enemy in wartime to fly fishing. The journalist and author Ben Macintyre observes that although the paper was published under Godfrey's name, it "bore all the hallmarks of ... Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming", Godfrey's personal assistant.[1][n 1] The memo contained a number of schemes to be considered for use against the Axis powers to lure U-boats and German surface ships towards minefields.[3] Number 28 on the list was titled: "A Suggestion (not a very nice one)";[4] it was an idea to plant misleading papers on a corpse that would be found by the enemy.

I HATE Disney, even before it was popular...living on the FL coast for 30yrs. Going a few times when kids were small and it was ok in the fall vs sweating buckets in the summer. I mostly liked the Brits on the tube yelling at their weeping children that WE WILL HAVE A GOOD TIME, WE HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TO HAVE THIS GOOD TIME!!!

Then all the pedo crap came out, the stuff to do something to kid's minds in their movies. Sadly my grandchildren like Disney. Looking for princess books on Amazon for my girl is hopeless as they own all the princesses of the universe now except Princess Buttercup, and she's a bit young but will both read and see that movie.

Most of them are not bright, which is not new for starlets other than Hedy Lamarr. Marilyn Monroe was said to be well read and I guess that's why she hooked up with Arthur Miller...maybe he was funny as I don't know. He was no looker.

Make it in sort of the same vein as "Mad Men" which did very well not too long ago.

"Goldfinger" is the Bond songs of all Bond songs. The film basically locks in the sound and feel. Compare "From Russia with Love" to "Thunderball" and it's obvious.

Moore had a bunch of problems. The age of sauve swinging suits and hats was gone, G-men were square, and the franchise was rudderless. "Moonraker" was an embarrassment, clearly a Star Wars-inspired space movie ripoff. Lots of that in those days.

"For Your Eyes Only" starts off a little goofy, and then gets really good. Bond kicking a car off a mountain was stone cold.

It's brutal, hilarious, unforgiving, and just excellent story telling that is far from predictable. I think there are 10 full novels in the original series. It's one of those book series that would likely be even better on the screen due to Erickson's writing style. He's so detailed, that a script writer doesn't have to use much imagination to know what he was going for.

348 Lessee...here's a few things we've been streaming and enjoyed.

These are all on Apple+ and some can of them can be seen elsewhere:

1) Severance - people have their consciousness split between an in-office personality and an out-of-office personality to be able to work in an oddball company for inscrutable reasons.
A bit like a slower, less creepy "Twin Peaks" mixed with a bit of Kafka.

2) SILO - a book series. Better than I expected. People live in a mysterious underground silo for mysterious reasons. Some people are trying to figure out why they are stuck there.

Both 1 & 2 are going to depend on their ending as to whether or not they were worth watching, so beware. Neither 1 nor 2 has yet reached the end of the series.

3) Dark Matter - Joe Blow gets kidnapped to another version of our world where "he" is a famous scientist. An alternate universe dealio but pretty well done. The series reached a satisfactory endpoint, even though it could go on if they wished. You'll be satisfied by the ending.

I'm curious about Dr Brain, a Korean thriller on A+, so maybe we'll start watching that tonight.

Correct. To play Bond, an actor has to be handsome, physically menacing but also charming and somewhat distant. He must have the capacity to tell outrageous lies with a straight face while having a twinkle in his eye. He has to hit on women with Olympian confidence while also shrugging off failure as just the luck of the draw.

Craig is a thug. Dalton was too dark, too tough, not charming at all. Lazenby wasn't scary enough.

365 ACE, you are missing something in the Disney Box Offices.

What happens is for opening weekend or weeks, Disney collects a much higher percentage of box office.

So what do they do? They use their marketing budget to buy up tickets through third parties. Then they collect back 80-90% of this budget as their share of the box office.

You can only prove this anecdotally. I go to a movie and about 60% of the seats are sold, then the actual showing there are ten people in the theater.

If 50 million of that 100 million is Disney purchased tickets, then they have really spent 50 million in their marketing budget, collect back 40-45 million in their share of box office, for a real spend of five to ten million to double the announced box office and declare the #1 movie in America.

366 If one of these streaming houses wants to do a great story with incredible characters and an over arcing timeline, look no further than Steven Erickson's Book of the Fallen series.

Fred Saberhagen's Sword books would be a pretty good vehicle for a mini to maxi series. 12 swords made by the god Vulcan of immense power. Each has a quirk that you don't know about at first, but used together can compensate. One is Farslayer who you can throw and kill anyone anywhere in the world...except then you don't have it anymore, it doesn't return.

377 Sadly enough, for decades now only the Coen Brothers and Tarantino ever make any movies that even sound interesting except for the occasional specialty film like Midway and Fury. Remakes and comic books and 70s tv show movies. Personally the only way I would watch a James Bond movie is if they did the movie in period.of the early Cold War which is what the character was written for. Make him a minority woman operating in the modem world and it isn't even "James Bond" and it shows the complete intellectual bankruptcy of modern media that they don't believe they can come up with a new character \context that anyone would want to see.

I wished I were even slightly surprised.

The long delay to even release names of the pilot said a lot.

Always loves me some Donald Sutherland. But this may be the best work of
his I've ever seen. Went scrolling through the credits for any references

Deca Durabolin is one of the most popular anabolics in the world, and for good reason. People who
use it properly, alongside a sensible diet and exercise plan,
can gain up to 20 pounds in as few as 12 weeks.

Most experienced steroid-users are cowards when it comes to taking test suspension, so beginners are extremely unlikely to enjoy this.
