Hollywood Hits Peak Woke/Broke as Captain America Projected to See Huge 70% Second-Weekend Dropoff After Flop Opening
Before that: All the wokies infesting Disney are angry at Bob Iger for making some very small walkbacks of illegal DEI practices, and for "capitulating" to Trump.
He might be distancing himself from the movie because he knew it would fail. Or he might have been trying to protect the movie from his own stink of failure. The new Captain America movie got a B- score from the post-movie pollsters at Cinemascore. This is the lowest score recorded for any Marvel movie. Furthermore, it's a bad score overall -- anything lower than a "B" (from people who wanted to see the movie and made the effort to go pay to see it) indicates a bad movie that will have short "legs" as word of mouth gets out. (Only horror movies can have lower Cinemascores and still wind up making a nice profit.) Disney shills are claiming this movie made $100 million in its "opening weekend." Well, they count Thursday shows as part of "the weekend," and last weekend was a holiday weekend, so they're counting a full five days of ticket sales as "weekend" box office. The movie didn't make $100 million over the weekend, it made $87.5 million. And that still includes Thursday as a "weekend" day. The movie will not make $500 million in total global sales, which means the movie, which probably cost $250 million or more, will be another Marvel failure. (Remember, theaters take about 40% of the gross ticket sales.) Box office projections call for Captain America to make $30 million this weekend. A drop of 70%.
Walt Disney insiders are furious with CEO Bob Iger over his perceived "capitulation" on DEI initiatives as well as its recent settlement of a lawsuit involving ABC News host George Stephanopoulos brought by President Trump, according to a report. "This is not what I expected from Bob -- I thought he had our back," a company insider told Deadline, adding: "What's next? Where do we go from here? What do we stand for now, keeping MAGA happy?" Disney is restructuring its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs to focus more on business outcomes, replacing the "Diversity & Inclusion" executive performance factor with a broader "Talent Strategy" and rebranding employee groups to emphasize workplace belonging. Additionally, the company has removed the autoplay content advisories warning about outdated depictions in older films like "Dumbo" and "Peter Pan" -- moving them to the details section instead. These changes reflect the pressure that corporations face in adapting to evolving political expectations, particularly under the Trump administration's renewed push against DEI initiatives. ... Some Disney employees were also unhappy over Iger's decision to agree to a $16 million payout to Trump as part of a settlement of a defamation lawsuit that was brought against ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos. One person described by Deadline as a "well-positioned individual" within the company called the decision to settle an "embarrassment" and "the beginning of the capitulation." ... Unlike past appearances, the CEO, who normally poses on the red carpet with film stars and the creative team, avoided public interactions.
The legacy media called it a $100 million opening weekend, and despite their sneaky use of five-days to count as a "first weekend", we're holding them to it. As a result, Captain America: Brave New World is on track for one of the steepest second-weekend drops in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Wilson cede creative oversight of their family's storied James Bond franchise to Amazon MGM Studios, sources tell us. Though valued between $3.5 billion-$4 billion, the legendary motion picture studio was absorbed by the streamer for $8.5 billion, the hefty sum propped up by the potential access of the 007 franchise. Moore, who's been doing Outlander for a decade, was the guy who made new Battlestar Galactica and was a main writer in the final few seasons of ST:TNG.
It's hard to read much into this other than: Amazon didn't like where God of War was, thought they couldn't get anything from what was done, and brought in a practiced hand to do better.

What would make for a good spy movie these days?
-
Telling a story.
Imagine a well written realistic movie with the men getting in dangerous situations and occasionally needing to punch their way out and the women getting in dangerous situations solely to poison someone.
But no super powers, and no John Wick luck/suicidal drive (full disclosure: John Wick I is one of my favorite movies).
Just people doing jobs to achieve a mission that other people are involved in and depending on them for to accomplish a critical task in part of a bigger plot that doesn't have to be part of the movie. We don't have to save the world from the giant laser beam weapon. We just need to secure this package, or get this code, etc.
I think men and women would enjoy a realistic film like that.

60% ish is normal drop off for second weekend so this is bad. I don't know what they were thinking beyond "BLM dood!!!" because smashing together a Hulk story with Falcon with a shield and the Serpent Society and adamantium and the Celestial in the ocean... then ditching most of the Cap story and Serpent Society is an old man with a dagger. It just looks jumbled and even the professional reviewers are saying its meh at best.

I was at the War Eagle Air Museum a few days ago, and one of their displays is of German soldiers in World War II. They have a big display in front of it explaining that history includes the swastika. Somehow, a queen obsessed with justice -- and who consults of all things a mirror to check up on her status -- finds out about a better champion of justice and wants to kill them instead of consulting or promoting them.
You can certainly tell a Javert like story of someone obsessed with Justice but in the end just not understanding what Justice is...but Snow White is not the backdrop for that story.

I think Bond's World is more interesting than MI world. Even though I like MI. But with MI the plot is very monotone, and predictable. I think characters in Bond are multifaceted, whereas MI is like a Comédie-Italienne - you got your Pierrot, your Harlequin and etc.

I found Skyfall boring and predictable. Yes, Bond movies are traditionally kind of predictable but Craig can't do humor like Connery could so it is just in your face.
And every time Craig "acts" as Bond I see him as the KGB agent that is working with/against Bond in one of the cold war era films.

Regarding movies and tv in 2025...since the last or last two writer's strikes, and all becoming trans and offended...nothing is good anymore. I look at Amazon prime to attempt to find anything and then I see that Alec Baldwin is in it, or Skeletor Nic Kidman and NOPE.
I HATE Disney, even before it was popular...living on the FL coast for 30yrs. Going a few times when kids were small and it was ok in the fall vs sweating buckets in the summer. I mostly liked the Brits on the tube yelling at their weeping children that WE WILL HAVE A GOOD TIME, WE HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TO HAVE THIS GOOD TIME!!!
Then all the pedo crap came out, the stuff to do something to kid's minds in their movies. Sadly my grandchildren like Disney. Looking for princess books on Amazon for my girl is hopeless as they own all the princesses of the universe now except Princess Buttercup, and she's a bit young but will both read and see that movie.
I just got in from shoveling snow and missed Ace banning some dikhead. I miss everything! I am never first except as a supermodel who does not have botox or implants.

I read the last Michael Crichton book, “Micro,” recently . Pretty sure it was an incomplete draft they found, so another author finished it. It was a standard Crichton story, but you could tell where the hand-off happened, but it doesn’t ruin it.

Wife and I just finished the first season of Deadloch, an Australian dark comedy police procedural.
I wasn't thrilled when I read that it was filled with gay and lesbian characters, but I gave it a shot and it turned out to be hilarious, making fun of lesbians as well as the fearful white, male patriarchy in the town.
Starts out slow until the out of town detective shows up. She's a hoot.

Yeah definitely going back is better than looking forward in terms of entertainment. Realized we didn't have Amadeus so I ordered that, 6 bucks. For a year or two DVDs were dirt cheap and I was picking stuff up for less than five dollars. The prices have gone up a lot in the past year.

Speaking of spy-genres: I finished the first season of The Agency and loved it. I'm generally a sucker for spy sh*t, but I thought it was really well-done and acted. Fassbender is fantastic, and even Richard Gere is really good.

the last bond book, Man With the Golden Gun, is like that. It's in such a rough state that they include one version of the same scene twice, even though one is obviously an alternate version of the other. I guess they just needed the pages to pad it out.

If one of these streaming houses wants to do a great story with incredible characters and an over arcing timeline, look no further than Steven Erickson's Book of the Fallen series.
It's brutal, hilarious, unforgiving, and just excellent story telling that is far from predictable. I think there are 10 full novels in the original series. It's one of those book series that would likely be even better on the screen due to Erickson's writing style. He's so detailed, that a script writer doesn't have to use much imagination to know what he was going for.

His movies were really uneven. As Smell the Glove notes, View To A Kill was horrible (great theme song though), and stuff like Moonraker were ghastly. But For Your Eyes Only was really good and Octopussy was a solid spy movie.

As for Marvel, its been going downhill for years, woke, woke, message, message, message. CGI overwhelms plot, acting, storyline. That's why the old 30s, 40s, 50s films are unique and why they are great. The stars of that era will never be replace with plastic toads.

If one of these streaming houses wants to do a great story with incredible characters and an over arcing timeline, look no further than Steven Erickson's Book of the Fallen series.
It's brutal, hilarious, unforgiving, and just excellent story telling that is far from predictable. I think there are 10 full novels in the original series. It's one of those book series that would likely be even better on the screen due to Erickson's writing style. He's so detailed, that a script writer doesn't have to use much imagination to know what he was going for.

Lessee...here's a few things we've been streaming and enjoyed.
These are all on Apple+ and some can of them can be seen elsewhere:
1) Severance - people have their consciousness split between an in-office personality and an out-of-office personality to be able to work in an oddball company for inscrutable reasons.
A bit like a slower, less creepy "Twin Peaks" mixed with a bit of Kafka.
2) SILO - a book series. Better than I expected. People live in a mysterious underground silo for mysterious reasons. Some people are trying to figure out why they are stuck there.
Both 1 & 2 are going to depend on their ending as to whether or not they were worth watching, so beware. Neither 1 nor 2 has yet reached the end of the series.
3) Dark Matter - Joe Blow gets kidnapped to another version of our world where "he" is a famous scientist. An alternate universe dealio but pretty well done. The series reached a satisfactory endpoint, even though it could go on if they wished. You'll be satisfied by the ending.
I'm curious about Dr Brain, a Korean thriller on A+, so maybe we'll start watching that tonight.

ACE, you are missing something in the Disney Box Offices.
What happens is for opening weekend or weeks, Disney collects a much higher percentage of box office.
So what do they do? They use their marketing budget to buy up tickets through third parties. Then they collect back 80-90% of this budget as their share of the box office.
You can only prove this anecdotally. I go to a movie and about 60% of the seats are sold, then the actual showing there are ten people in the theater.
If 50 million of that 100 million is Disney purchased tickets, then they have really spent 50 million in their marketing budget, collect back 40-45 million in their share of box office, for a real spend of five to ten million to double the announced box office and declare the #1 movie in America.

If one of these streaming houses wants to do a great story with incredible characters and an over arcing timeline, look no further than Steven Erickson's Book of the Fallen series.
It's brutal, hilarious, unforgiving, and just excellent story telling that is far from predictable. I think there are 10 full novels in the original series. It's one of those book series that would likely be even better on the screen due to Erickson's writing style. He's so detailed, that a script writer doesn't have to use much imagination to know what he was going for.

Sadly enough, for decades now only the Coen Brothers and Tarantino ever make any movies that even sound interesting except for the occasional specialty film like Midway and Fury. Remakes and comic books and 70s tv show movies. Personally the only way I would watch a James Bond movie is if they did the movie in period.of the early Cold War which is what the character was written for. Make him a minority woman operating in the modem world and it isn't even "James Bond" and it shows the complete intellectual bankruptcy of modern media that they don't believe they can come up with a new character \context that anyone would want to see.

The worst Brosnan Bond was the one with Halle Berry. The best was Goldeneye. Second best was The World Is Not Enough. Sophie Marceau was fire.
Both Timothy Dalton Bond pics were guilty pleasures.
My favorite Connery was actually From Russia With Love. Old school Cold War spy stuff. Worst Connery was either You Only Live Twice or Diamonds Are Forever.
Best Roger Moore Bond was either The Spy Who Loved Me or For Your Eyes Only.
That last dude was just depressing and useless. None of his movies are memorable.

I even like Lazenby's "OHMSS" which is underrated with Telly Savalas as Blofeld among other quirky things in that one.
I like Live And Let Die, I just didn't think the plot was all that interesting. Jane Seymour was a good part. And the fact that it was set here.
And yeah, the sheriff reminds me of Jackie Gleason in Smokey and the Bandit kinda.
