Delta Flight That Crashed in Toronto Was Part Airline That Bragged About Its All-Female Flight Crews

Obviously this is Trump's fault.

I don't think we know yet if this was one of Endeavor Air's all-female flights. Their "Unmanned flights," as they put it. So stunning. So brave.

But the fact that the pilots' identities and qualifications (experience, flight hours) are still being hidden makes one wonder.

[A]t a time when in much of corporate America, competence has been forced to give way to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the post-crash jokes practically wrote themselves. "So they basically just hit the curb?" joked radio host and former GOP congressional candidate Kimberly Klacik.

I shouldn't have laughed, but I did.

"Still no word on the pilots or number of hours [the pilots] had, which happened within 24 hours of the Reagan National crash," John Monahan posted. "Things that make you go hmm."

The experts I've read online and talked to offline are in something close to 100% agreement that the crash was due to pilot error.

I saw a pilot on Megyn Kelly say that the recommended rate of descent is 400-500 feet per second, whereas Girlboss Airlines came plummeting down at 1,000 feet per second.

They bragged about their all-female flight crews while playing a line from a song by noted terrorist propagandist MIA, chanting the line "Live fast, die young."

but say I'm wrong about that. STILL very few females become pilots, so your pool is much much smaller. so if you're trying to hire only girls, you are going to get worse pilots bc you have a much smaller available pool. the drop off in ability will be earlier and starker.

45 Um, I think that's 1000 feet per minute. That's generally the climb out and descent rate before being close to the ground at least.

Test it next time - the seat belt sign dings at 10k feet and that's when electronics can be used (or at least that used to be the rule). That will be about 10+ minutes after lift off. So the climb is actually a bit slower.

If that name rings a bell (and it should), it's because they had a horrific crash here in Buffalo in the winter of 2009.

Poor pilot training, short on hours.

Another pilot showed descent rate was OK till right toward the end. I think that guy said speed may have been too slow, possible the plane stalled at the end, or not enough speed to flare, or not enough speed to fly out of downdraft.

Hopefully the investigators don't try to cover up for a DEI pilot, but it is not impossible.

I remember reading an OMNI (often sensationalist) Magazine article in the early 80s arguing that females are better-suited to be astronauts and endure space travel than men for various physical, psychological, emotional, etc reasons (bodies not impacted by Zero G as much, able to tolerate long periods of isolation better, require fewer resources, etc.).

My worst subordinate-boss fights were always woman worker - woman boss. Had much fewer issues with any other combo than that one. Typical conflict was one of the two parties was an ass no matter what they looked like and were itching for a fight. Men are a bit more willing to utilize authority even if it means deservedly bad things will happen to someone. Women often struggle with that one a bit.

I obviously understand politically you can’t do anything about it, but a great female pilot is probably at best a very mediocre male pilot.

But the reason they are pushing women ahead because they are women is because a purely meritocratic system will not produce the politically determined right amount of female representation, and that's because there are real differences between the sexes, both in abilities and desires.

You do your 2 years, you go back to your normal branch. I have several friends who did that. Some did it during the Bush admin. Some were there with Obama. It's considered a career enhancing tour. Have a family woman "friend" who is a high ranking pilot at a major airline flying international flights. SHe got there by being qualified to start, and then flying the hours to work her way up. The issue with DEI for pilots is that you are short circuiting training and experience, which cannot be faked. All in a rush to make a marketing push. I'd check the qualifications for making pilot for all pilots at Delta and the owned subsidiary airlines and see if there is a differing standard for women and men in the last say 4 or 5 years. If it exists, I'd suggest the DOJ have a talk with the C Suite, with the intent of having them all removed.

Allowing the entire aircraft to roll to the right, the right wing hitting the ground as the right gear assembly crumpled and/or sheared-off.

The cost to Russia to move any further is too high. Defensible lines for both sides are too hard to breech. They know they are going to get some of what they wanted. They will look to out wait the West and try again later. That has been their MO for quite sometime.

Firefighting can be a deucedly hard, physical job. My nephew (45 years old) is a fire fighter in the National Forest Service. He is responsible for about 400K acres in Montana, but he takes his crews where they are needed (in the northwest, usually). He is 6'3" tall, and about 200 lb (he's getting a little overweight) and he's on the small side for his crews.
They were out fighting forest fires in Washington state earlier this year and he told his Mom (my sister) they were LUCKY no one was hurt or killed. It was a really bad forest fire.

265 It is very very difficult to get a test pilot to land a plane anywhere near the regulation design limit 10fps 600 fpm. They will do a pre test buildup. Sometimes over days. All for just a handful of 400 500 fpm.

One complicating issue is in ground effect for low wing aircraft. Basically these planes generate a cushioning air layer below them. Everyone in the engineering/test/landing structural analysis field knows this and has experience with this.

279 Used to listen to a guy that had worked on the submarine pen buster bombs. Bush 2 dusted off the program and that is how we got the buster bunkers they used in Iraq to go after Saddam Hussein. Once things were declassified R enjoyed talking about it. The test pilot for the program was a petite gal. In order to get the aim right the bomber had to pull so many Gs the pilot would pass out for a couple of seconds and this caused no male pilots to volunteer to fly the mission so R said "why dont we just get the test pilot to do it?" They did, she had a gaggle of male fighter pilot escorts. The rest is history. So yes there are some very very talented women pilots with nerves of steel.

But I don't want to fly on an airline which is making a point of hiring ONLY women or other DEI check box pilots. As said above, if you shrink your pool of candidates you are likely to lower your hiring standards. The only thing I'd be more nervous of is flying UAE airlines and wondering if pilot might go jihadi midflight and crash the plane on purpose.

296 Aircraft are designed to land without any permanent damage up to 10fps/600fpm, they are also designed to land up to 12fps/720fpm without any damage capable of harming crew and preventing operation to normal stop.

Damage and impact forces increase exponentially with desc. rate so a little faster and you get much higher forces.


Also you don't fall out of the sky. Most landings are at 1g or >1g pre touchdown due to flare. I didn't see any flare on the video, level the whole way the almost 3point. Flare gives you an immediate lift force to arrest you descent right before landing. I didn't see they flared.

20 years ago, if I had got on a plane and saw a female pilot, I'd have thought nothing of it. Base assumption would have been that anyone in the cockpit got there because he or she had the chops. Today, after many, many years of "muh representation," the assumptions just aren't the same. I'm sure that gores some qualified woman's ox now and again. But I don't care. A lot to be said for that but I know a few.
When I was stationed in Turkey, I shared an apartment with the junior ranking pilot in the unit. He was a CW3. We had two Beech C-12s there and the embassy had one, as did the general stationed in Istanbul. Ironically he was the only qualified Instructor Pilot in country. So he had to go all over the country giving check rides to senior officers. And his ratings were solid.
Best part was he was a good friend, a good officer, and a damned fine pilot.

My cousin is a pilot for United. Flies 737's. Last year he was a Skywest pilot flying the regional jets just like the one that crashed in Canada. He'd been flying the regionals for about 3 years before he started in the 737's. He's been out of flight school now for 5 years I believe. He's 30 years old. His father, my uncle, was a Naval aviator and Delta pilot for 30+ years.

And as you note - when I get on a plane, I don't know if my female pilot got there because she was good enough, or because she was rushed. Age could be a bit of a marker, because you could rightly think the older ones more likely got there on their ability. It becomes logical to think that a younger female pilot is less skilled than her male counterpart just based upon average capabilities. Whether SHE is or is not is immaterial. Its not misogynist to think that way. It is stupid to think otherwise.

The lab guy did not understand this. He had added a catalyst to help form the dye. Nothing happened. Being impatient, he added more catalyst. Still nothing happened, so he added more catalyst. It was time and temperature that eliminated the inhibitor.

Finally, some of the inhibitor was used up, and the exothermic reaction began to occur. Did I mention there was a lot of catalyst? As the catalyzed reaction occurred, the mixture was heated and in a second, and all the inhibitor was released and all of that catalyst made the reaction of the total mix occur in milliseconds.

Everything in that lab was coated with dye except for one spot. There was a shadow of a guy sitting on a stool, the only part of the floor not covered with dye.
