Wednesday Morning Rant

DOGE-Induced Reversals

During the first Trump administration, there were certain universal and unquestionable truths espoused by the American press. Among them was the constant refrain of the first Trump administration: whistle-blowers are heroes. Not so much anymore. Ever since January 20, there has been nothing more hated than a whistle-blower.

Under the grinding of Trump's steam roller, whistle-blowers are now evidence not of brave #RESISTANCE, but of the unrelenting horror of new American fascism. The reversal has been extremely rapid, and extremely complete. The American press is fully consistent and unified to a fairly unusual degree in its opposition to the new era of whistle-blowers that, despite being less than a month old, has already caused seismic disruption in Washington.

Donald Trump has, in an historic first, designated an entire department committed to "whistle-blowing." It's called DOGE and its mission is ostensibly saving taxpayers money and whipping the government into something approaching fiscal sanity. That may be its mission - and it may even work - but that will not be its real value or its real effect. In essence, DOGE is not a fiscal department but an ethics department. The money DOGE saves is a bonus, a cherry on top. Its true value is in exposure. It has become clear in astoundingly short order that so far, every penny it has saved has been not a penny wasted, but a penny stolen.

Musk and his skunkworks aren't rooting out waste, but rooting out corruption. What they are exposing is unthinkable to many, and unspeakable (at least, not in public) for those doing what DOGE is now exposing. DOGE aren't fiscal disciplinarians, they're whistle-blowers. They're whistle-blowers, and therefore the demonic enemy of the political establishment and its symbiotic partners in the press. If someone walks up to you and says, "hey, just so you know, Mr. Jones is stealing from you and you might want to do something about that," you don't get angry at the person who told you, you get angry at Mr. Jones.

Yet the rage is all directed at Musk and DOGE. Not at the wrongdoers, but at the men exposing the wrongdoers - and their wrongdoing - to the pubic. If you become enraged at the messenger telling you that you're being robbed, it can mean only one of two things: you are either irrational and probably stupid, or you know about it already and are profiting from it. The former is possible. The latter is far more likely. These people aren't astonished to learn about Mr. Jones' theft, they're enraged that they won't get their cut. Their ricebowls - ricebowls made of looted taxpayer money - are at risk of being rightly and righteously shattered.

So the days of the heroic whistle-blower are at an end. Whistle-blowers are now evil. The playthings of a wicked billionaire disrupting their highly profitable games of theft and sundry other corruption.

When the whistle-blowers at DOGE demand and receive sweeping access to government systems, it is decried. Those who once shrieked about how nothing can be considered beyond the pale in the pursuit of truth now shriek that it is absurdly unfair for there to be even a notion of government accountability. When agency officials - like the recent one at SSA - resign rather than face scrutiny, it is evidence of Trump and Musk being monsters, not agency officials who are either corrupt or willfully incompetent and who would rather run than face scrutiny. DOGE notwithstanding, this aversion to sunlight is now on full display. As Senator King (I-ME) put it when discussing RFK Jr's confirmation : "If this were a secret ballot, this man wouldn't get 20 votes." "If only we weren't subject to scrutiny and the will of the people, we'd behave differently" is not the strong message that Senator King and the department heads fleeing DOGE's searchlight seem to think it is.

America's enemies within have only ever had once principle, which is the will to power. When celebrating "whistle-blowers' who lied and made up their allegations helped that ambition, whistle-blowers were celebrated. When demanding that their internal enemies be subjected to the corrupt gaze of a Press complex that spread lies about them, scrutiny - "speaking truth to power," they call it - was a near-holy virtue. When the hated enemy had so much as a single secret real or imagined (usually imagined - Trump has always been big on transparency), secrets were the death signal of the nation.

Now that the Washington is in the initial, early, fledgling steps of possible reversal, all of those great "principles" espoused by the ruling class for years are similarly reversing. All that was once virtuous is now evil. All that was once celebrated is decried. The reversal in the press and among those who are the public - and even some of the private - face of government is nearly total, and we have DOGE to thank for it.

Don't get too caught up in the dollars and cents. DOGE's fiscal mission is tremendously important but its effect on the balance sheet is, in my opinion, secondary. DOGE's true value is not its end, but the means to its end: exposure. DOGE's true value is the imposition of transparency. When sunlight floods in, the cockroaches scramble back toward the shadows.

So keep shining lights, DOGE, and keep laughing while doing it.

YES!

I am loving how the whole cancel/doxx paradigm has shifted, so that every time some DC blowhard complains about DOGE, a bunch of people on X do a dive into that person's connections to NGOs and whatnot to suss out his/her true motivation.

About dang time these people face scrutiny from the "little people" they so clearly disdain.

I have to admit: yes, yes I am.

I suspected it was bad, I did not think that most (all?) of our debt, almost all of government expenses, were graft and fraud.

What has hit harder is the revelation that the US has been the bad guys. Consistently, for decades. I knew there were some sketchy LGBTwhatever programs overseas, but not the depth and breadth of what was exposed with USAID. Can't think of any actual good we did with that program -- $40 billion a year of pumping out the most corrupt, culturally corrosive stuff while toppling other countries' governments for rejecting it.

I'm now questioning my assumptions about how to manage the debt.

How do we know that we can't balance the budget simply by rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse not only in discretionary spending but also in the major drivers of our debt: Medicare and Medicaid?

Since those two programs have been declared non-discretionary and automatic, why should I assume it's anywhere close to honestly managed? They've effectively been wholly independent of any oversight for decades, and I'm supposed to just believe that a majority of their $1 trillion a year budgets are honest?

Why should I believe that?

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, watching B-movies with Roger Corman at February 19, 2025 11:09 AM (GBKbO)

26 Interesting essay and true. If they were only finding waste, like two or three agencies exist that do the same thing (and there is some of that) they could eliminate the waste but it would quickly seep back in.

By exposing that we don't just have waste and a bit of congress having their snouts in the trough but rather huge amounts of pure corruption DOGE may shake loose some long time incumbents and it should take more time and effort for the looters to replace their graft systems.

I think that a great many of us had a vague idea of the extent of waste, corruption and graft and are happy to finally see it shoved in the faces of the left.

The question is, will this exposure filter through to the normies? And by 'normies,' I mean the wishy-washy "I don't pay attention to politics" or the "I vote the man, not the party" types. If all that DOGE exposes lands with them, then I'm cautiously optimistic.

Otherwise, my fear is that, after 4 years of Teh Donald, the normies will say, "Well, that's that. The corruption has been cleaned up. Let's give them Dems another chance."

We need to prepare for the inevitable mistakes, though. We can't fall for the trap of trying to defend every move Trump makes. Let the Dems do that. They will certainly try to exploit every misstep by Trump.

We already have the specific example of the workers who were fired at Pantex.

Trump admin scrambles to rehire hundreds of nuclear weapons workers

Some of the fired NNSA employees worked on areas that aren't priorities to the Trump administration such as energy efficiency and climate change, according to the AP, but others dealt with nuclear issues, though not directly with the agency's weapons programs.

https://is.gd/NaBfZ8

I'm not saying Trump should slow down, but we have to be ready to acknowledge mistakes when they happen. The correct response is "yes, in any endeavor of this size, mistakes will be made, but will then be corrected just as quickly".

No, the problem is that congress keeps funding it at greater and greater levels, every year.

What Trump and Musk are doing is fantastic, but unless the money and savings they are finding don't get put into a recision request that gets sent back to congress, congress is simply going to appropriate it again.

Our spending has largely been on auto-pilot, f**king TARP money and budgeting has never gone away, it's simply been carried forward in every succeeding CR since that stupid program was foisted on us.

Because they've been in on it.

I recall a DC journo explaining why he was not going to criticize Hillary (back in 2016) as a sort of "hey, I have a conflict of interest.". He explained that the Clinton foundation helped him with his sick kid, and he is occasionally asked to host foundation roundtable discussions with world leaders, CEOs, etc.. Think of how many media careers the Clinton foundation boosted by doing things like this? Hey, we'd love to boost your career by putting you at an event with all sorts of VIPs! Now, you don't really want to stab us in the back after this by printing a mean story, do you?

DC is a small town, and as was shown with the Obama administration (remember all the graphics floating around?): most of the media people are related to the DC blob. Susan Rice's husband is/was an exec at CBS, Chuck Todd's wife is a Democrat PR consultant, and on and on. Media people have close friends, spouses, siblings, neighbors who work in the government or related industries. They come first.

So unless congress actually cuts this sh*t, all that's happening is public masturbation.

For example, by cutting off all the USAID funding the NGOs were immediately in the ropes, scrambling for money -- all of them at once.

Nothing can remain that can be re-opened, re-staffed by the next Democrat president. Fire the staff, close the building, then sell it or fill it with something else. Make it so gone they'd have to start from scratch to get it back.

Well, if we assume normal midterm patterns, Democrats have a solid chance of taking the House.

However, with the direct attacks on the Democrats' fundraising apparatus through the limiting of funds to NGOs...all while Trump's approval ratings fail to fall even though the media has gone full shreeking mode about the end of the world with USAID gone which will affect the real life donors who aren't funded by NGOs...and I fail to see why we should assume normal historical patterns for the midterms.

I think 2002 may actually end up being a better comparison.

128 >>> 106 I was on the phone with a fellow historian friend of mine last night, and we speculated on how the Cold War is going to be remembered in a decade or two: especially on the Right.

With USAID and all these other sneak tactics going back to its early days, not to mention the CIA and its work, we may soon regard it not as a battle against Communism, but the point at which America lost its way and became an oppressive empire.

Hell, the next generation of conservatives may look at Reagan and Nixon as suckers.

This is not 2016. We are not the only ones getting boned at the grocery store and gas pump. And the left no longer owns social media. And there lawfare is failing this time.

Trump hasn't even been in office for a month, doesn't even have his whole team in office yet, and everything is changing. Nobody ever wins by expecting to lose.

Three key moments where we lost our way:

1991: The Soviet Union falls and literally nothing happens - all the Nat Sec/DoD budgets and activities say the same even with no actual enemy to run black ops on anymore

1992: Bill Clinton wins the presidency and starts turning using Nat Sec people - remember the FBI file scandal?

1999: The FNM, using FBI files from Bill Clinton, torpedo Newt G and Bob Livingstone for having affairs. This leaves Denis Hastert, who they know is a pedophile, to become the top Republican. They use him to turn the GOP into controlled opposition.

My only surprise is the complicated and convoluted money laundering. It's like the money goes through a half dozen cutouts before it lands in someone's pockets. I'm sure that's by design, but it seems inefficient.

Further, stopping the President from a legitimate and legal investigation of the Biden crime family allowed the DNC to prop up Corpsey and use him as puppet president for four years.

Without Eric Ciamarella, the Biden corruption in Ukraine would have been revealed, the DNC wouldn’t have been able to steal the 2020 election, and we wouldn’t have had a war with Russia. All roads lead back to Ukraine and the first impeachment sham.

And the pathetic turn-out at these current protests.

Two things they've always been able to do: 1) hire large crowd of protesters who are 2) holding a sea of the same signs.
If the left was organic, that should not have changed just because USAID funding was cut and future funding in doubt.

Yes, there is a balance sheet, it has been held on the Treasury books since forever. Officially, gold is $42.22 an ounce.

Even marked to market, if it is still there - and not sold, pledged as collateral - it is about $500 billion, enough to run the national government for a few months.

It would be a huge scandal (although there are so many).

261 Beginning at least in 2016, watched as many lawyers, physicians, political strategists, etc. suddenly moved into the region, often from the West Coast of the country but also down from New York City, and even from across the river including Haddonfield, N.J.

They usually settled into the nicest of areas - even in Philly - and immediately became politically engaged. They're active & diverse physicians & medical researchers. They're U.S. Representatives and DAs. They've been selected to sit on Boards of Foundations and big money, often political nonprofits. They're now both state and local representatives that came from the "union side." They oppose the operation of for profit hospitals and medical centers. They're on most school boards, town councils. They've also created a slew of Foundations, nonprofits and union spinoffs, and then support causes of small businesses, some rearranged into non-profits with sometimes highly questionable goals & financial accountability. And, they redistrict.

Those moves have netted them the low information voters.

It's a very long battle ahead & we can never break for their foundation is still from the the 1950's, 60's and 70's.

Ukraine's problems are manyfold, here. In the long run they bet on the wrong horse in US politics when they could have spoken up 5-6 years ago, then made the mistake of trusting both the (Dem-led) Americans and Germans after the American establishment steered them right into this.

Biden's handlers never intended for them to do more than tread water. The "training" we gave their brigades a couple of years ago was absolutely abysmal, for example.

We could have ended the war in less than a year for a fraction of what we spent, either in actual terms or in phoney baloney accounting, if we wanted to. Setting aside the Dems' role in starting it in the first place.

"Note that EU Member States have leeway in implementing the Directive. Therefore, variations may exist among EU Member States regarding the scope of individuals eligible for protection and other conditions.

Temporary Protection. In June 2024, the European Council extended the protection regime until March 4, 2026. If the situation in Ukraine improves, EU authorities can end temporary protection, in which case the residence permits granted under this rule would become invalid. EU countries would also have to individually publish national laws in this regard."

Let them keep them, just like we're keeping them. Their own people will raise cain before much longer.

Trump is already cutting UN funding by withdrawing from anti US organizations such as the Human Rights Council and WHO among others.

I doubt NATO is going to fund the grifters simply because the US does mostly direct spending in that group with a minimal for overhead. Euros do the same supposedly by spending on their militaries a certain percentage of GDP (but aren't).

Basically both the UN and Euroland already have their own set of grifters that won't welcome newcomers to drink from a shrinking teat.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, also called the COVID-19 Stimulus Package or American Rescue Plan, is a US$1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed by the 117th United States Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 11, 2021, to speed up the country's recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and recession.[1]

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), (H.R. 3684) is a United States federal statute enacted by the 117th United States Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden on November 15, 2021. It was introduced in the House as the INVEST in America Act and nicknamed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. The act was initially a $547–715 billion infrastructure package that included provisions related to federal highway aid, transit, highway safety, motor carrier, research, hazardous materials and rail programs of the Department of Transportation.[1][2] After congressional negotiations, it was amended and renamed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to add funding for broadband access, clean water, etc.

I can't be the only one that looks at my paycheck. Sure, its not a stub now, but you still see it online. You can still see your tax returns.

1/3 right off the top, goes somewhere else besides my pocket. 7% on every purchase. And a check a year for each car, my home - it goes on and on. "They" - between Federal, State, and Local - are right around 50% of what I earn.

They can't cut enough. Including the military. The police. All the sacred cows. Until I see people starving in the streets, the cuts are too little.

The principle employment for the highly educated is to start out in an internship for the NGOs, then with that experience move on to low to middle level administrative posts in Universities (funded by the Gov) Think tanks (USAID and other government monies washed through political parties passing on their USAID takes) NGOs (USAID) and state government, and then to work up from there to higher and higher posts that this experience pads the resumee.
so they stand to profit from the free money flowing from USAID to the favored movements and orgs. They love USAID because they expect to make a career from it.
