I saw a video with a guy talking about him and his German buddy talking. They were discussing losing your driver's license, and the American asked the German what happens if you drive anyway without a license. The German was baffled by this concept: you lost your license, you cannot drive. That's not even a category in Germany.

Willowed:
BRICS is not so much a currency as it is a hard money international exchange system to challenge the USD and SWIFT. It was made necessary by the US excluding Russia, Iran and threatening other countries from participating in SWIFT and embargoing their banking. It will continue as long as there is concern of this happening again. You may dislike it, but you either have to live with it or make sure it is not necessary to survive. Just as an example, BRICS is supposed to be based on an actual "basket" of assets that can be used to back an international exchange currency held by the member states, much like Trump's proposed Sovereign wealth fund for the US. Posted by: Kindltot at February 17, 2025 02:37 PM (D7oie) == BRICS are going no where, they cannot even get an agreement on who would want to do what, because no one trusts the other to take their own currency back. BRICS was a made up acronym by an analyst at Goldman Sachs in the late 90s. I forget the guy's name.
It was just a grouping of developing countries he thought investors should put their money in due to their high growth potential over the next decade. Brazil is growing, slowly, thanks mostly to mineral exports, especially to China. Russia is still a petro-state with a one party government and a Czar. India, is... India. China was the best money bet over the past few decades, but her future isn't as clear or bright. South Africa is a basket-case of incompetence and runaway DEI. They really have little in common other than trade. Two shaky democracies, two authoritarian states, and a racial kleptocracy on three separate continents. So this is interesting. They are saying that over 1/2 of internet users are afraid to give their opinion online because they might be "attacked." The Left takes this as justification for going after "hate" speech.
But are the one half the people who agree with the Left, or the ones the Left is trying to suppress? If it is Lefties afraid to talk because they might be called out for their nonsense, then their strategy is logical (but still wrong) and only reveals how weak those opinions are if they can not stand up to public scrutiny. But I suspect that one half who are afraid to talk online are the ones who disagree with the Left and they are afraid of going to prison. How does it encourage discourse online if you jail people for what they say? Posted by: Gentlemen, Please, please, it's too much winning! at February 17, 2025 05:30 PM (UL2Yk) 58

Just to play devil's advocate. (It always pays to understand your enemies.)
This idea that free speech led to the holocaust has evolved. They used to claim that too much free speech led to the NAZI backlash against it. The NAZIs suppressed the speech and killed a lot of people. So the old idea was that the government has to control speech to prevent the rise in NAZIism. These 90 IQ journalists take that to mean that free speech leads to NAZIs, instead of the counter argument that the suppression of free speech is what the NAZIs need to exist and progress. The suppression argument was always flawed for obvious reason that *what* is suppressed depends on who is in power. The counter argument of allowing all speech may allow NAZIs to speak, but it also allows their opposition to speak and cut them down. Yes, the reason that Nazism spread because it was allowed to. But Weimar Germany allowed all sorts of sexual perversion to be mainstreamed. It is a prime example of decadence. The German party AfD has probably standard issue 'progressive' policies (I'll admit I'm guessing) but on the issue of immigration is holding a forbidden opinion, that the largesse of the German taxpayer should benefit the German people and not the mass of recent immigrants that know nothing of German language and culture. This includes, but isn't limited to, reducing incidents like blocking streets for 'prayers', running cars at high speed through Christmas markets, stabbings, rape and sexual assault.
This makes them "far-right". Posted by: Chuck Martel at February 17, 2025 05:47 PM (Dv3i1) You know why the German fuehrers are crying in their microphones? It's because 'respect for authority' is in their DNA. What has happened is that, prior to the Vance speech, one needed permission from the State to speak openly about political issues, particularly mass immigration. But now, there is, as Vance said, "a new sheriff in town." And JD Vance arrived from Emerald City personally to give the German people permission to question German domestic and foreign policy. That's what made German Chancellor Scholz stamp his feet and shout "This is unacceptable!" Posted by: mrp at February 17, 2025 05:56 PM (rj6Yv) 201

There was a cartoon from the '20s showing Hitler with tape over his mouth with the caption, "Of 2 billion people, only he is not allowed to speak." Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! Posted by: illiniwek at February 17, 2025 06:17 PM (Cus5s) == That's the budget. The currency is different. I think perhaps you are confusing the two. The only issue with the currency at the moment is that FJB torpedoed the economy with the green new deal at the same time he flooded it with more money than could be soaked up. The green new deal fucked up the economy - along with the rest of the stupid progressive shit - so there was a mismatch. The currency itself is fine, except for he created so much inflation its value is under attack. It is still the global reserve currency, which means the world thinks it is the best currency. The world was much better when Germany was a few hundred small kingdoms, principalities and cities Posted by: Josephistan Germany was one of the least authoritarian regions in the world (except for Prussia) as long as that was the status quo, and the reason is simple: it’s hard for rulers to have too much control when they are relatively weak and poor. Everywhere else in the world they may play lip service to freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of association, etc. They have all signed the Human Rights Council documents and so forth...
...but it is all a matter of the forbearance of government. In the US if government takes a negative interest in you, you do have recourse under the Bill of Rights to protect you (abuse thereof notwithstanding); but that is only true in the US. Nowhere else in the world. Everywhere else, if the government takes a negative interest in you, well, tough shiite. You have no recourse.
