Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - February 19, 2025 [TRex]

20170210-20170210-076A4566.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT.

Early morning ahead, so going to be a brief ONT appearance for TRex this evening. Behave yourselves. Or at least misbehave in amusing ways that puts you in the running for comments of the week.

***

This is not the prestigious, internationally acclaimed, stately, and illustrious Sunday Morning Book Thread, but thought ONT readers would like to know the classic book "Go dog, go!" has been updated:

20250219-8gva3ksucpf01.jpg

***

Not new news (Jan 2023), but shout out to Edmonton for creative snow plow names decided in a naming contest:

The Dude shovels.

20250217-BigLepowski.jpg

Use your shovel, Luke.

20250217-SnowBeGone.jpg

I find your lack of shoveling disturbing.

20250217-DarthBlader.jpg

Shoveling is difficult with short arms.

20250217-PlowasaurusRex.jpg

No points for originality, but points for maintaining tradition in naming contests.

20250217-PlowyMcPlowface.jpg

My other favorite was "Crtl Salt Delete" but photo of that one did not meet ONT content standards.

Others?

How about Plowabunga, Fast and Flurrious, Scoop Dogg, Blizzard Wizzard, Blizzard of Oz, Austin Plowers, Sled Zeppelin, and Edgar Allan Snow?

***

Late Valentine's Day submission:

20250217-IMG_20250214_134202.jpg

True love is also buying plenty of ammo...

***

The universe sometimes has funny linkages. Yesterday was the anniversary of the death of Dale Earnhardt. If you are wise in the ways of NASCAR, you know. If not, take it on faith that Mr. Earnhardt was a bigger than life, old school, hard core racer that died in 2001 in a last lap crash in the Daytona 500, NASCAR's biggest event of the year.

February 18 is also the date that Enzo Ferrari was born. I will presume that everyone knows Mr. Ferrari as the founder of the Ferrari car company and racing team.

Two of the most well known people in the auto racing world somehow share a link to the same day - one in birth and one in death. TRex has a small dinosaur mind but seems like there is some kind of karmic symmetry at work.

On the anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's death, his son received one of his father's race cars from an owner that passed away and left it to Dale Jr in his will.

***

Because we can:

The soundtrack can only be from the 1980s when the synthesizer ruled the music world:

And then things got out of hand:

***

A life skill:

20241214-Gem83XeWsAA79Vc.jpg

***

Random wholesome content:

20250215-4141739542990.jpg

***

Less wholesome content:

20250215-1738927910152.jpg

***

Non-wholesome in a wholesome way:

20250217-Calvin.jpg

***

Hard to argue the point:

20250215-Gj1WlsQXwAAOobQ.jpg

***

History nugget: The photo below is a model of the original design for Mt. Rushmore.

20250128-RushmoreModel.jpg

More info available by clicking on the photo, including a short video showing how the model dimensions were translated to the rock for carving.

***

This will come back on the Hobby Thread at some point if we ever do a boating or fishing theme:

20250215-Screenshot 2025-02-14 211854.jpg

Phoenetics are different in Australia, so the joke does not quite translate down under.

***

Preserved in Amber

20250216-preservedinamber.jpg

[Hat tip: Sarah Hoyt via Hrothgar]

***

Family relations can be complicated:

***

Did not originally intend for this to be a recurring theme, but here we are. She seems nice and embraces how God made her, but is this something that warrants a world record?

***

The Battle of Iwo Jima started on this date in 1945. An irresistible force met an immovable object. Ultimately, the irresistible force prevailed but it was grueling. We remember those who paid the cost.

20240619-20240619-IMG_20240619_155326527_HDR.jpg

***

Triumph for a big ONT finish:

***

Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. Fight the good fight. Cleetus McFarland has not endorsed this ONT.

Finally wins a race and its the biggest one and his friend and car owner dies in the last lap.

I suspect if the woman really is doing it temporarily to make money to go to nursing school or whatever it could still work out, but "sex work" screws up women's ability to pair bond. And frankly with military guys who might be off for months on a service tour/navy cruise that is about the worst thing you could imagine for such a woman.

60 My small dinosaur mind seems like there is some kind of karmic symmetry at work. In the four operas constituting Wagner's Ring Cycle, the basic story is that the Norse gods are destroyed by their own greed and stupidity thus allowing humans to rise and rule the world. I saw a documentary on PBS which made the point that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs allowed for the mammals to rise and eventually rule the world. So Wagner and the dinosaurs have something in common.

107 61 46 Japan's Pacific strategy was interesting.

Make the Americans fight enough bloody battles and they'll give up even if they are winning the war. Since the US had a larger population and industrial base I would say it was dumb except...North Vietnam and the Jihadis in 'Stan both won war against the US with that same strategy.

There were many flaws in the Japanese defensive strategy in the Central and Southern Pacific. Operations in the Solomons and on New Guinea revealed those flaws to both sides by the end of 1942. The US rapidly capitalized on the flaws in Japanese defense strategy. The Japanese were unable to fix their strategy's flaws in wartime. The flaws were due to what turned out to be terrible assumptions and decisions.

141 Iwo represented 2.3% of ALL the U.S. KIA casualties in WW II. (6.8k at Iwo/291k total)

I think the consensus of most military analysts is that it was a lousy choice of islands to invade. It wasn't well-suited to be an Army or Navy staging camp for the next act at Okinawa.

As for Iwo's value as an emergency landing strip, that was largely a post-action attempt to justify the butcher's bill. Most of the USAAF planes which used Iwo after its capture had non-emergency reasons for landing there.

The invasion planners didn't realize how well-prepared the enemy was. The Navy ignored USMC pleas for a longer pre-invasion bombardment.

So it goes.

That is sad news. I listened to many a game on radio when the games were "radio only." That was before Pittsburgh won Lord Stanley's Cup and they played in the Patrick Division. Also, make absolutely certain that all dirt, sealer, and foreign matter is cleaned from the surfaces in the block where the sleeves seat. You only get one chance...

That's right! I didn't remember where the games that were on TV were broadcast. That was a UHF channel so it came in slightly fuzzy. But it was free. Now you have to pay an arm and a leg to purchase all of the tiers of cable to be able to watch games. I actually lost interest in hockey when they emptied the stands and piped in fake crowd noises and made all the players wear rainbows during the lockdown era. It was too depressing to watch the hockey world descend into madness.

Not really, a vaccine contains a small fragment of a virus or bacteria dna, and a lot of adjuvant that causes an immune response, and sensitizes the immune system to the fragments and hopefully not anything else in the environment.
I know you will claim there is actual science behind it, and that is true, unfortunately it is looking like the science indicates that some vaccines are negatively useful, and some cause problems in other ways.

Or it could be fraud.

If my company did this the government would treat it as fraud and be preparing to put all of senior leadership in prison.

It’s probably corrupt data. Someone was digitizing paper records and typed the birthdate wrong. It makes no sense for the purposes of fraud; people do commit all sorts of SS fraud, but why would you do it with an impossible birthdate?

Some of the ones in the 100-140 range might have been real people whose family are still collecting checks or who stopped getting checks but never got marked as deceased.

It’s ridiculous there’s been no effort to clean up the data and prevent obviously-incorrect data from making it in, but it’s FedGov.

You can run it from a USB or other external drive. You'll do best if you have modern Nvidia card, but it will run on just a CPU, too, just a lot slower. When you download it and get it "installed" you'll see the two options to run either from the GPU or the CPU.

The user interface is a bit overwhelming at first but watch a video or two to see how to get started with it and it will quickly make sense.

235 I'm not so much worried about an audit of Knox, at least in terms of US reserves. That gold doesn't amount to a hill of beans in context of our government's upside-down house of cards financial racket.

What I worry about is the large amount of foreign gold held in trust by the NY Fed. It's theoretically backstopped by US gold deposits... If they don't exist, then what do those sovereign depositors do besides attempt to claw their own holdings back?

I can wait to see what he does instead of him giving away the plan so the opposition can create obstructions. We know that rolling back regulations is one piece of the plan. I think he expects manufacturers to move operations back to the US to avoid tariffs and create jobs. Those are two concrete strategies that I can think of.

I won't be ashamed of feeling relief and actual optimism after what we have endured. Even Trump's first term was filled with one outrageous attack after another. The past four years drove me to believe Sefton's Morning Report was right: the USA was finished. I am grateful for the respite and will thoroughly enjoy every victory that moves us toward our founding inspiration of forming a more perfect union and away from the brink of destruction.

A homeopathic 'medicine' actually contains NO MEDICINE as it has been diluted out.

You're talking past each other.

Vaccines or other medications may be good, or bad, or they may do nothing. But they are chemically different from a plain saline shot, or whatever placebo is given to a control group.

My favorite reactions have been when someone uses a remedy we recommend, and later says, it didn't do anything, I just got better. Well, that's fine; that's the goal.

Don't bother arguing this with me. Not worth the effort. I refer to it as the world's most powerful and effective placebo.

The harassment became so severe that she met with a school counselor several times a week. However, her family says they were not informed about the situation."

11 year old texas girl commits suicide after being bullied in school with other students pretending to be ice and arresting her for deportation till she killed herself. (DU)
Posted by: raimondo

==============

I was just about to say there's a 99% chance she was fatherless. Then Boron Cobbie posted the link to the Newsweek story, and now I see it was 100%:

"On February 3, Marbella Carranza, a single mother from Gainesville, received a call informing her that her 11-year-old daughter had attempted to take her own life at their home. "

The bullies knew a fatherless girl was an easy target. They would have used anything as an excuse to make her life miserable. If it hadn't been ICE, they probably would have told her there was a secret type of COVID that they had put in her food or something.

305 Speaking of machining, I made what I thought was a decent hack the other day. I bought a ChiCom spindle motor and controller for a hobby project. The problem was that it came with an ER11 collet holder, and I want to put a timing pulley on instead. The picture showed set screws (which it does indeed have) so I thought it'd just be a matter of taking those out. Nope. That bastard was a super-tight press fit.

I don't have a gear/pulley puller anywhere near that small, and sure didn't want to buy or make one for one job.

I took out the collet and put an M6 nut inside the collet nut and screwed it back on. Then I screwed in a long M6 bolt until it pushed the collet holder off the shaft. Shazam.

Didn't appear to damage the collet holder or nut. There's no visible marring and the collet nut still tightens the collet down all the way down.

Probably this is something that real machinists have known about for a hundred years, but I was a little proud of myself for figuring it out.

There was a big fire. In the video I saw, there was a burst of flame the instant the right side gear hit the runway, and then the plane careened to the right, the right wing hit the pavement with a big ball of fire, and was torn right off, with the fire remaining in the wing (where the fuel tanks are).

This guy reverse-engineered a patent, and figured out how to pump argon gas through a quartz tube into a crucible to make a clean, solid, uniform alloy of gold and aluminum.

The one that irritates me?

I bought a new car online in the early 2000s. Completely online. Picked it out, the price was clearly stated, I put down some amount of earnest money. They got to work looking, the company called to see if I would consider a different color (no, keep looking), two weeks later it was on its way to the local dealer that cooperated with Carsdirect for me to meet and give them the check and sign one piece of paper. And then I was out the door with my vehicle. Done.

Know what you can no longer do online 25 years after the internet has matured?

Damn, I chatted with him over Christmas and he obviously had a medical condition because his head was shaking as if he had either an advanced palsy or he was experiencing severe drug side effects. I didn't ask him about it, just chatted, and we went our merry ways (we were each taking a walk in different directions). I feel really bad that he couldn't share his sorrow or despair or whatever it was with someone who could have talked him down. I also wish I'd asked after him, but he seemed so cheerful.

How is Realtor still a job?? They don’t do anything.

I use Zillow to do all of my own research, then contact a Realtor who.. shows up to the house late, spends several minutes fumbling with the lockbox, and then can’t answer a single question because they only skimmed over the listing for the first time a few minutes before meeting me.

They get paid so much and they’re awful. They don’t know anything about houses. I know more about houses than these people. “Is this a slab foundation?” “I don’t know, but I can ask.” “Yeah, it’s on a slab.” “The countertops are red granite.” “No they’re not, they’re quartz.”

And on and on. I had a seller’s agent refuse to take an offer to the seller. It was a good offer. They ended up accepting it right away, unconditionally. He just thought he could find someone who would pay more and didn’t care if the house sat for a few more weeks.

'They also fed it a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet, which itself increases the risk of heart disease.

'They also don’t seem to have measured how much of the aspartame water the mice drank, or the aspartame level in the blood, so it is unknown what the mice actually received.'

I used a realtor to help me find this house here in AZ. he worked hard for his commission, and i still see him now and then, and have a beer with him. The stumbling blocks were all on the seller's side: a gal with an inherited property, wanting to unload, but not willing to hire an AZ attorney to do the necessary paperwork.

And my place in Alberta, I got friend, a fellow car nut, who is also a realtor, to go looking for rural properties for me. He said (AOP), I found you one, it's a little further out from Calgary than you wanted, but the price is right, and I think you will like it. He was 100% right, and I have lived there for 27 years now.

While a young child's fingers are thinner, their arms are shorter, so the subtended arc along which one sights to arrive at the estimate is the same.

Also gripped the inside of the insert with tongs in a kind of backwards way.

One thing is to try and do it quickly in a dry environment because the frost will build up very quickly on the insert.

And make sure your insulated gloves are super clean. Keep them in a bag after cleaning and don't put them on until your ready to insert the part.

Best done with two people.

424 One thing is to try and do it quickly in a dry environment because the frost will build up very quickly on the insert.

And make sure your insulated gloves are super clean. Keep them in a bag after cleaning and don't put them on until your ready to insert the part.

Best done with two people.

Honestly, I think Some Rat is on the right track by subbing this part of the job out to a machine shop. That is their bread and butter, and if they make a mistake, they have to make it right.

Well, fast is it. Safe? Not so sure. And no room for an onboard office, and staff, which AF-1 has. Even a B-1 might be too small.

426 I agree AOP, our lead tech in that lab was a machinist and and extremely experience with tight tolerances.

Experience is the key in this case. Guy made stuff look easy to do but don't try this at home folks.

We got to be good friends. He suicided over a chick.

I was just looking at info on the new AF-1 design. Nike has some damned shoe out called Air Force 1 and Google was trying to push that. Shows you what they are about.

The new one, VC-25B, is considerably stretched from the base version it's based on. Longer range, but it won't have in-air refueling capability, like the current ones do. They've decided this isn't really needed -- the current one doesn't need this much. In a doomsday scenario, POTUS will likely ride whatever the Doomsday plane is, not AF-1.

448 Been taking a snack for ride home, don't always eat it but had pretzels in a baggie tonight. Waited 10 miles before dug them out. Had 1 then baggie disappeared off my leg. Driving 60mph was feeling around floor, finally felt bag betwseat and door. Pulled it up and it was empty. Later felt there and a pile of pretzels are between seat and door.
