The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Senator Tom Cotton makes all the right noises to make us happy, but his service as a director of exactly the sort of semi-secretive quasi-government organization that the left uses to subvert America and control our foreign policy is deeply troubling.

Take a look at the website of International Republican Institute. It is a mess of political jargon and leftist doublespeak. "Promote inclusivity, Sustainable impact, Women and youth, empowered individuals," and on and on. And it gets better! They partner with other NGOs, like a Bush-sponsored one to support women's rights in Iran and Afghanistan! Because Lord knows, we aren't sending enough money to those two countries. And that's just one of dozens of poorly described connections and programs, seemingly all of which are just feel-good nonsense designed to launder money amongst the elites.

Is Tom Cotton one of them? Is he working at cross purposes to Donald Trump? At the very least he is involved with an organization that is conducting its own foreign policy that may or may not align with the goals and desires of the American people. Maybe he is just a figurehead, using the IRI for free travel and some other perks. Or maybe he is simply on the letterhead and has no substantive connection. Either one is unacceptable.

We are $35 Trillion in the hole, we have a vast unelected bureaucracy that is vigorously conducting its own foreign and domestic policy, and it is incumbent upon our representatives that they forcefully reject exactly this sort of organization. It is a clear measure of their dedication to the mandate that we voted on in November, and we should hold them to that minimum standard.

And if they refuse to disassociate themselves with those organizations, they should be primaried. We do not have the luxury of accepting the continued existence of a fifth column in Congress!

23 Cotton has an interest origin story.

He started writing articles for...NRO?...as a combat officer who had served in Iraq.

The FNM then claimed he was a fake and some hack at NRO had actually falsely written the articles.

The Cotton went on a publicity tour and the FNM had to stop pretending he didn't exist. He then turned that into a government career.

43 [More from that post by DataRepublican:]

Funded primarily by taxpayers, IRI received $130,689,289 last year, much of it from USAID. Though Senator Cotton is unpaid for his board role, the organization directs substantial public funds toward expenditures like travel ($12,173,741) and pensions and fringe benefits ($14,232,10.

As I’ve noted before, IRI has funded refugee resettlement through grants to the UN-affiliated International Organization for Migration and has backed other progressive initiatives.

Anyone affiliated with IRI is advancing the interests of the global elite, not the priorities of U.S. citizens or Republican constituents—unless they choose to resign from the IRI.

Did you get that? They managed to sneak "conserve" in there. Because they aren't a bunch of deranged libs, not at all. The attendees are shown at the link below. They include Bill Kristol, Jonah Goldberg, David French, Michael Steele, Adam Kinzinger, and my old congressvermin, Barbara Comstock. That tells you everything you need to know.

I live in a blue area. Taxes are high, services are poor, and local and state government constantly raise taxes and fees...but still basic services like fixing the roads just aren't there.

From Trey Gowdy to Josh Hawley to Tom Cotton and dozens of others who've said great sound bites, it's all farts in the wind because NOTHINH HAPPENS (h/t to the nothing will happen guy).
Maybe it's all just to fool the rubes whilst beaks get wetted. We've known some and suspected the rest, but the bird of prey that is our government has a left and a right wing, but it's still just one bird.

Look at the schedule of federal financial assistance at the back of the 990 or the audited financial statements. All the funding inflows and out flows are there. Put pictures of the board of directors of each organization and map the flows. Prolly the same 5000 people passing the fed money around to each other's groups. What Musk showed was how many layers this money passes through, each skimming their vig. Be interesting to see if these ngos were getting clean audit reports or if there was hinky stuff going on there too.

Abstract
This article examines the history of civil society in the U.S. It explores contemporary civic reorganizations by providing a snapshot of classic U.S. civic democracy and a glimpse at the deep roots of the sorts of interest groups and voluntary organizations that held sway around 1950. It highlights major civic transformations that unfolded in the U.S. after 1960 and evaluates their impact on the broader workings of contemporary American democracy.

Something like Social Security should have processes in place to vet information, not let it fester for literally decades.

There should be a limit, like a year, to verify the record, if you even allow for date of birth to be empty, before the record is purged. No one should be able to claim benefits on an unverified record.

All NGO's and "foundations" need to be grass roots, or endowed ONCE by their founder. They all have to have a built-in sunset: they must wind up and disburse all remaining funds if their primary goal is achieved, or if the fail to achieve it in 20 years. Zero paid directors or managers, just a few paid clerks to man the phones and keep the office lights on. No government money, ever.

The main question is more- who has voted against the citizens interests and lined their pockets with speaking fees, junkets and sudden increases in their wealth?

The second question is, who has influenced various votes or ensured they don’t take place from behind the scenes in order to cover their tracks and keep a “clean” voting record.

The main question is more- who has voted against the citizens interests and lined their pockets with speaking fees, junkets and sudden increases in their wealth?

The second question is, who has influenced various votes or ensured they don’t take place from behind the scenes in order to cover their tracks and keep a “clean” voting record.

Reforming the Republican Party was going to require sacrifices and would not be without consequences.

Reforming Congress will likely require more.... severe actions. It is not an entity that wants to reform. It will, and is, fighting it right now. Tooth and nail. Some of those people are more vocal about it than others, but you can bet they are ALL fighting any sort of reform.

We asked for reform after Obama and got Trump. Our political betters tried to oust him for four years. They then gave us *biden. Our reply was to send Trump back in.

295 There has been and is a concerted effort to remove "keys" from government databases. These "keys" are things like SSN's, birthdates, EIN's and so on. Something unique to a person or entity that receives monies from the Feds. Someone had to tell management at Fed Bureau X, Y or Z to do this. Remove these data elements. Make them no longer required fields. Do not record transactions with these changes. And so on.

Who were those people?

Some of them are leaving the capitol city as we speak. This, after being discovered by DoGE. Others are sitting in the Capitol bitching about it. It's still a real problem.

Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 18, 2025 12:08 PM (Q4IgG)

296 BTW, Congress could very easily write into every bill which NGO’s can receive money and which cannot. They can even do wise things like provide a list of eligible NGO’s and state that no monies can go in any way, or through any third party to an NGO that is not on that list.

What they should also do is change the tax status on NGO’s and any other entity (public or private) doing business in any way with the US government so they cannot hide their sources and uses of funding, and make them file that as part of their quarterly disclosures.

But interest groups are usually associated loosely with the left or right. Thus, if most of the groups on the right approve of a member, then it's a reasonable supposition that he's generally on our side. If the member is only favorable viewed by left-leaning groups, then he's probably left. It's not perfect, but it is a useful general tool.

Hmm.... that's definitely changed since I needed a replacement (around 20 years ago, as noted).

I'm not sure that I agree with this. While it was a pain in the ass, I'd like to think that an actual human being (or as close as you get with a bureaucrat) has actually seen the applicant face-to-face at some point.

357 I'll quote you again:

"I mean, odds are at some point we may find some republicans involved. But I doubt it. It’s more likely they are guilty of being feckless and apathetic."

359 A little help here - what does TRO or TROs stand for? Been seeing a lot of these but they are never spelled out.

360 271. There are stringent rules for law abiding citizens. But scammers and illegals aren’t subject to those rules.
Posted by: Its Go Time Donald

We're the sure thing. They know exactly what we have & what they can get out of us in as far as taxes, fees, etc. And also how overall obedient we are too. (Maybe a bit of a pita but, really, not much.)

Why does federal employment increase so, for largely repetious jobs that now need contractors to build training, customer service, etc? It's a huge circle.

361 There are a billion possible social security numbers. How many people have been enrolled since it began, and how many illegals have been give SS numbers? It sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Posted by: Thomas Paine at February 18, 2025 12:17 PM (lTGtQ)

According to DOGE the SS database has something like 390 million records. Lots of duplication. That didn’t start four years ago.

Twenty years ago I read about how there can be a dozen plus illegals using the same SSN and the SSA knows about it. This was during GWB’s big amnesty push, and the argument was we should give those illegals citizenship so they won’t have to share SSNs.

The corruption runs deep.

362 The Brits call NGOs "Quangos," which I like better. Sounds like something Joseph Conrad could've described in Kurtz's compound....

My point on the thread from a week ago was that Republicans are in on it. Marcus T disagreed.

My point up above was that Marcus T said that no Republicans would be in on it. Marcus T said I made up his assertion.

Marcus T is a GOP apologist, more loyal to the brand than anything else.

And what Republicans are in on it to any degree close to what the Left is? Marcus T shouldn't have to explain the difference between the exceptions and the Rule.

Graham. Paul Ryan, and now it seems Tom Cotton.

All on NGOs that receive federal grant money.

And how are we to know if they're the exception or not? Why does the GOP, which has exploded debt while controlling Congress most of the last 20 years, get some sort of benefit of the doubt?

Because we cheer for them in the Super Bowl of politics every 2 years?

372 A little late for the discussion, but...
Very interesting CBD, thanks for pointing this out.

Apparently both parties have these little foreign policy/aid playgrounds.

There is also a Democrat counterpart to the IRI called the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

https://www.ndi.org/

Here's their Board of Directors:

https://www.ndi.org/board-directors

Tom Daschle (there's a name from the past), Stacey Abrams, Donna Brazile, and Randi Weingarten, among many others.

I don't know how much $$$ USAID was giving to them.
Would love to know, though.

Posted by: SpeakingOf at February 18, 2025 01:35 PM (6ydKt)

373 And a TRO is usually easier to get than a regular RO because it's just temporary to allow the parties to prepare for a full hearing and designed to stop some immediate harm.
