The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

Bibas.jpg
JewishLivesMatter

Kidnapped from their home, dragged by civilians into the bowels of the festering shithole that is the Arab-run Gaza strip, then murdered.

Hamas and the so-called "innocent civilians" of Gaza are 100% responsible for their deaths, and if ever there is an argument for collective responsibility, this is it. The people of Gaza are enthusiastic and active supporters of Hamas and their bloodthirsty fanaticism, whose goal is clear: the destruction of the Jewish People. This is not passive support...these people store weapons, hold hostages, allow the building of tunnels underneath their neighborhoods(with convenient entrances inside their homes!), camouflage Hamas terror infrastructure in their hospitals and schools, and act in all respects like volunteers in the Hamas terror organization.

That makes them guilty. That makes them legitimate targets for military action. That Israel has not treated the population of Gaza as terrorists is a testament to the essential humanity of the country. The entire country is convulsed with the agony of the hostages, and no matter where people fall on the political spectrum, they feel the collective pain and sadness. Yet the armed forces still comport themselves with dignity and respect for their own rules of engagement, which have gotten many soldiers killed over the years.

But Israel has made a significant strategic error... one that will be the cause of unimaginable suffering in the future. Because of the noble and completely understandable focus on the lives of the hostages and the respect for the dead, Israel has negotiated with terrorists, and those organizations will in the future be fanatical in their pursuit of hostages.

Until Israel makes a conscious decision that hostages will be mourned and honored in perpetuity, but the terrorists who violate every tenet of civilization will be hounded to the ends of the earth and killed, the country will be in a vicious cycle of hostage --> military action --> surrender.

It is an awful decision to make, but the future of the country depends upon a coherent and strategically sound policy with regard to hostages.

And.. yes, it is easy for me to suggest the unimaginable from the comfort and safety of America, but Israel is also the tip of the Western spear against the marauding hordes of Islam, and how Israel ultimately deals with this issue will decide the fate of the West.

There is only one way to fix it. Israel, still ! has not exacted the proper price for the atrocity. Unless they do it, they will be attacked on this scale again - not now, or in 5 years - their enemies are annihilated for the moment, but in 10 when these forces regroup.

Remotely similar story from Trump's first term:

He was negotiating with the Taliban on American withdrawal. At the end of the meeting, he pulled out a satellite image of the Taliban leader's home and said, "If one hair on one American's head gets hurt, I'll kill you."

He then left the room.

At some point in my reading, I came across an observation that said, roughly, one reason moderns find it difficult to understand ancient empires like Rome or Assyria is because they were pre-Christian, and the idea of the intrinsic worth of every person (e.g., Nasty Pelosi's 'spark of the divine') was incomprehensible to those who used slave labor and exterminated entire populations.

I suggest, cautiously, that the same principle is at play here - the idea of utterly destroying every last living Palestinian in Gaza, down to the very newborn being morally repugnant, even to those who do not consciously embrace Christian principles.

But what do I know? I'm just an asshole commenter on a Smart Military Blog.

Probably, the Israeli ROE should not include the taking of prisoners.

Death or running straight away from the battlefield should the only options.

I'm sure there are international standards against this, but humane treatment of prisoners is not part of muslim culture, and Israel's humane treatment of prisoners is constantly used against them, and frankly is an incentive for war or terrorism.

Time for them to spit that unmelted butter from their mouths and protect their citizens. That is the first and most important job of any gov't.

Before we deployed to the Balkans we all were herded into a big briefing by the lawyer JAG types, the guidance was nobody could return fire on a sniper, unless his position was precisely known. Or we would/could be charged with war crimes. This almost sounds reasonable, except the definition of a sniper generally is nobody knows where his position is at in the first place.

this is incredibly important

I also look at it as part of a greater (theistic) war - life vs death. demonic forces HATE life and hate humans prospering. Islam is one example of a demonic theism.

the people of Israel, faced constantly with the reality of Islam - steadfastly hold onto their love of life and their faith in the future. imagine ... I dont know... other peoples? they would fold under this relentless evil.

War is exceedingly ugly, and I would question the humanity of anyone who says “sure” to this question. The reality of it is the people themselves count on our love of life to protect them from consequences of their heinous deeds. They don’t love their children, for if they did, the need for this conversation would be mute, they would act civilized. If we are playing let’s pretend, the youngest would be saved to be raised in a different culture, and not used as sex toys while growing up.

Many Christian denominations have the concept of the age of accountability, before which a child isn't held responsible for sins. Judaism also has this.

According to Wikipedia, this varies between 7 (Catholics) and 13 (Jews).

No, because even the smallest would expose Israel to fall out and also render Gaza a hazmat zone. Dropping one symbolically in a (relatively) remote area could have some impact, but conventional bombs would be just as effective without the radiation risk. Theres not a ton of utility in tactical nukes vs something like MOAB generally aside from the shock and awe factor. But then you’re also dealing with the political fall out of taking off the nuclear lid.

318 McConnell previously said he would not run again in '26. Here in KY he's not a well liked as he once was... and certainly hated more today than years ago. His election machine here will dictate who will likely be his successor.

And it's why we who wanted him out saw every primary candidate destroyed before the election.

The R wing was getting scraps from the federal government. Hundreds of millions, to be sure, but, compared to the Dems, scraps.

And, whew-boy, the ones left in U-R are going to be rabid fighting over the 3 actual donors they have left.

So, as big a shock as it will be going forward how little money the Dems are able to raise, the incumbent Rs of the U-Rs is going to be significantly less.

They don't. People forget that we had tried a bunch of experiments including term limits, recall of representatives, terms as short as one year, etc. back in the Articles of Confederation days and still had crappy governance.

What term limits do is temporarily open the legislature to new blood which then in turn becomes corrupted just as fast.

Arguably, the limit that the House GOP has for committee chairs (6 years) has resulted in quite a bit of turnover in that body among the GOP. If the Dems emulated that, people like Nadler would have been sidelined years ago.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison
=========
True, you get second and third order effects that are difficult to perceive. Arkansas did have the shortest term limits (6yrs in House, and I think two 4-year Senate terms) and has seen quite a bit of turnover. Dunno how that has played out over time as I quit doing state legislative research somewhere around 2000. The other variable was the flip of Arkansas post Clinton to the GOP including the legislature to blood red levels. So some of the effects of short terms might have interacted with that.

Someone has probably done some research about it by now but that will probably be an obscure journal or such. Might find a reference if interested in a report by NCSL (National Center for State Legislatures)

Knocked off Dee Huddleston (from memory) with a hound dog ad where hunters with dogs were searching for Dee (Dee had a lot of absences in votes). Helped that it was the peak Reagan year of 1984).
