Top Story

Nvidia has delayed the launch of its RTX 5070 card - a $549 high-end model - until after AMD's announcement on the 28th. (Ars Technica)

The article points out something I hadn't noticed before: The 5070 is likely to be markedly slower than the 4070 Super, since it cuts the number of shaders from 7168 to 6144. The 5070 Ti is pretty much a wash; it increases the core count slightly but decreases clock speeds a little.

The 5090 and 5080 meanwhile are overpriced, irrelevant, and not available for purchase anywhere. The $750 5070 Ti will launch next week, and is expected to be more of the same.

The mainstream market is now AMD's race to lose, and they probably will.

Cue the utterly predictable wailing that all the information collected by the CFPB is no longer in the hands of incompetents and thieves.
Nintendo's legal pursuit of Palworld, which has been described as "Pokemon with guns" and has sold tens of millions of copies on the basis of simply not being lazy garbage, has hit a snag after the US Patent Office denied 22 of the 23 patent claims that Nintendo wanted to use against Palworld developer Pocketpair. Oops.

With only one patent in dispute the case is likely to end up with a minor settlement from Pocketpair to Nintendo and some small changes to the game. Given that Pocketpair is a small company and swimming in cash, this isn't going to slow them down.

Recent sales numbers haven't been published but Palworld sold 25 million copies in the first month after release last year, netting the company hundreds of millions of dollars off a budget around $7 million.
We were wrong about GPUs. (Fly.io)

Minor but interesting point: Nobody is looking to deploy their own LLMs on cloud servers. They either use their own hardware or APIs from one of the big players.

Fly.io is a small cloud provider with a GPU offering. They're not canceling the product, but they're not planning major upgrades or expansions either.
There are now five makers promising Ryzen 370 mini-PCs with upgradeable memory. (Liliputing)

Minisforum, GMK, Geekom, Acemagic, and AOOSTAR, making Beelink the only Chinese player in this space without an announcement.

The articles (this one links to the others) note the similarities between the models, with the author also suspecting that there are rather fewer than five distinct motherboard models.

Pretty much every motherboard has the "don't kill yourself" BIOS update now. Not sure what to recommend since I haven't built an Intel system in many years.

1. Pick your CPU chip (which you've done apparently.)
2. Pull up the specs on it from its manufacturer. Get the exact socket type.
3. Find matching motherboards with that socket. Get their specs, make sure that CPU is listed as compatible. Keep only those that match.
4. Get out to tech review sites and YouTube and other video platforms, and put in the make and model number of that motherboard. See if anyone's had serious problems and what they are.
4b. Tech forum searches, same idea.

Every time I go to build a new system I go through this, and I usually spend days researching and putting together matching components (cpu, mb, memory, storage, power supply, case, other peripherals...)

Then go verify availability and price of all of those.

I've made my current "Killer system" last for ... 13 years and it's still going strong and does everything I want. I think the extra effort in finding all the information you can is worth it.

Give a strong look at AMD before committing to Intel.

To ensure you're getting the correct package for install, go to brave.com, and under the browser dropdown, select either "Android" or "iOS" depending on what your phone is (iOS is for Apple phones.)

Results of test using Brave on my android phone with last night's ONT: Still a bit of jumping as the twitter links load and expand but after that it seems to settle down.

37 I *was* going to drive to the suburbs and spend a little money at the tobacconist this morning. But Linda asked me to come along to the local library, where a local historian will speak about a family dairy that was established in about 1900 on this side of the river.

Why might it be interesting? Because my paternal grandfather worked on this side around that same time, commuting back and forth on one of the many ferries they had then (there was no bridge at all). The speaker says there are "remnants" of the old dairy still to be seen. I'm curious to know where it stood.

Oh, the local history society (on this side of the river, anyway) usually has good presentations. They used to offer free coffee and cookies from a local bakery, but not recently.

Miss Linda is not my wife -- though when you look at the sheer length of time we've been "involved," some thirty almost-continuous years, it seems like that. 12. It has 12GB. I can see why they don't want to talk about it too much. They're pushing the "fake frames" DLSS or whatever, but they had a $400 or so 4060 that had 16GB. Offering a mid-line "performance" model that is already going to struggle with games and Stable Diffusion tasks is hilarious.

Agreed. And it's weird because I bought one of their laptops and it was junk, but their motherboards have all been great in the systems I've built, vs. Asus, which I've always had good luck with re:laptops, but never had any luck with motherboards.

It's weird how there's no real way to know what to expect from a company.

84 I asked AI two questions this week. Both were straightforward and should have returned definitive answers. I got better answers doing the research myself.

How do you know if AI is giving you good answers if you don't do the work yourself? This is my problem with it. If I setup a spreadsheet, I assume the math is going to be correct if I have done the formulas correctly. I don't have that kind of confidence in AI. I can't assume it's going to be right.

Years ago, I was reading a book about trench warfare during WWI, and the author made a passing comment that Anglican priests were kept out of the front lines as a matter of policy by the Church of England. On the other hand, the Catholic Church permitted their priests to go up to the trenches. This prompted the wave of conversions from the C of E to the Catholic Church in the years following WWI.

Military chaplaincy, especially during wartime, is not for the faint of heart. I'm sure pastor McNutt performed his ministry admirably. Not trying to pick a fight -- your post stirred a recollection.

I think Trump is playing this absolutely perfectly.

He started out with USAID, something no one had ever really heard of. Rife with fraud and money laundering, and people started paying attention.

Then he moved to the IRS, and the people at the IRS complained to the public they've been terrorized for decades "Oh help, please save us, they want to look at our finances!!!"

And people laugh at them for not realizing what they're saying.

While I don't disagree, often times we don't have the luxury, (or the care) to observe a subject to see how their actions chart. 178 I built quite the ugly Pinewood Derby car. Dad did something to the plastic wheels. He chucked ‘em up in his wood lathe and ground them down thin, like vinyl LP records. Not sure what that does, but it gave an edge. Our troop had a lot of dad’s who worked at John Deere, and they had these beautifully crafted cars with custom paint jobs. Naturally my car won, they were all kinds of pissed off. It was great.
