From the fly.io article: "Like everybody else in our industry, we were right about the importance of AI/ML. If anything, we underestimated its importance. But the product we came up with probably doesn’t fit the moment. It’s a bet that doesn’t feel like it’s paying off."
More like you were right about the hype of AI/ML, but you didn't market your offering correctly (you didn't lie enough about its supposed capabilities) and the masses did not flock to you. That's okay. It just means you'll be sued less later. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at February 15, 2025 04:12 AM (O7YUW) 7

@13/A dude in MI: "How do you choose a motherboard? Looking for a good one for a 14700k and preferably with a easy to use bios for setting adjustments so chip doesn't kill itself"
1. Pick your CPU chip (which you've done apparently.) 2. Pull up the specs on it from its manufacturer. Get the exact socket type. 3. Find matching motherboards with that socket. Get their specs, make sure that CPU is listed as compatible. Keep only those that match. 4. Get out to tech review sites and YouTube and other video platforms, and put in the make and model number of that motherboard. See if anyone's had serious problems and what they are. 4b. Tech forum searches, same idea. Every time I go to build a new system I go through this, and I usually spend days researching and putting together matching components (cpu, mb, memory, storage, power supply, case, other peripherals...) Then go verify availability and price of all of those. I've made my current "Killer system" last for ... 13 years and it's still going strong and does everything I want. I think the extra effort in finding all the information you can is worth it. Give a strong look at AMD before committing to Intel. @18/FenelonSpoke:
I've seen others complaining that posts here with lots of twitter links (that start off as lines and then expand to be embedded objects that take up more screen real-estate) can be a problem and causes their browser to jump around while those are loading. Some on Apple phones are even experiencing lockups because of it, and I've seen some questions thrown at Pixy about this. (Pixy, I hope you've seen those!) Maybe it's in-line adverts doing the same thing? If so, try using an ad-blocker in your browser you're using on your phone. (Hand that one off to Fen-Spouse to chase.) You could try the Brave browser on your phone (just installed it on my Android mobile phone via the Google Play Store to test it) and see if that helps. To ensure you're getting the correct package for install, go to brave.com, and under the browser dropdown, select either "Android" or "iOS" depending on what your phone is (iOS is for Apple phones.) Results of test using Brave on my android phone with last night's ONT: Still a bit of jumping as the twitter links load and expand but after that it seems to settle down. I submitted the job posting for my replacement yesterday. I *was* going to drive to the suburbs and spend a little money at the tobacconist this morning. But Linda asked me to come along to the local library, where a local historian will speak about a family dairy that was established in about 1900 on this side of the river.
Why might it be interesting? Because my paternal grandfather worked on this side around that same time, commuting back and forth on one of the many ferries they had then (there was no bridge at all). The speaker says there are "remnants" of the old dairy still to be seen. I'm curious to know where it stood. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 15, 2025 05:46 AM (omVj0) 38

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at February 15, 2025 *** Oh, the local history society (on this side of the river, anyway) usually has good presentations. They used to offer free coffee and cookies from a local bakery, but not recently. Miss Linda is not my wife -- though when you look at the sheer length of time we've been "involved," some thirty almost-continuous years, it seems like that. By the time the talk is over, I'll be ready for lunch and a short nap; and then I have some rewriting to do on a short story an editor has requested revisions on. __ It's shocking how they don't want to discuss the VRAM specs. 12. It has 12GB. I can see why they don't want to talk about it too much. They're pushing the "fake frames" DLSS or whatever, but they had a $400 or so 4060 that had 16GB. Offering a mid-line "performance" model that is already going to struggle with games and Stable Diffusion tasks is hilarious. How do you know if AI is giving you good answers if you don't do the work yourself? This is my problem with it. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 15, 2025 05:44 AM (42Vb+) Years ago, I was reading a book about trench warfare during WWI, and the author made a passing comment that Anglican priests were kept out of the front lines as a matter of policy by the Church of England. On the other hand, the Catholic Church permitted their priests to go up to the trenches. This prompted the wave of conversions from the C of E to the Catholic Church in the years following WWI. Military chaplaincy, especially during wartime, is not for the faint of heart. I'm sure pastor McNutt performed his ministry admirably. Not trying to pick a fight -- your post stirred a recollection. When is DOGE going to yank the funding rug from under the most sacred of all sacred cows of anthropologic global warming, the unsupported by evidence one dozen and a half or so Grand Canonical Models of Climate Change?
- I think Trump is playing this absolutely perfectly. He started out with USAID, something no one had ever really heard of. Rife with fraud and money laundering, and people started paying attention. Then he moved to the IRS, and the people at the IRS complained to the public they've been terrorized for decades "Oh help, please save us, they want to look at our finances!!!" And people laugh at them for not realizing what they're saying. The Global Warming stuff is bound to happen soon, but he's setting it up so that 80% of the public (maybe more) will support what he's doing. While I don't disagree, often times we don't have the luxury, (or the care) to observe a subject to see how their actions chart. When listening to sound bites, where the best lines of the subject are just a few seconds or reading a Tweet, and it manages to hit the Big Three, there is your primary data point on which one can start framing their interaction. When the lunatic has mutilated their bodies, is screaming in doors about chickens, of is making violent threats for someone else to perform - we have probably had Satan's calling card in front of us long before. Fitz, who's going to a show next weekend, needs a bath before his show bath later this week. Diana was at hydrotherapy yesterday and needs conditioner put into her legs so the hair doesn't get yellow and dried out. It's warm today, so today is when all this is going to get done. I built quite the ugly Pinewood Derby car. Dad did something to the plastic wheels. He chucked ‘em up in his wood lathe and ground them down thin, like vinyl LP records. Not sure what that does, but it gave an edge. Our troop had a lot of dad’s who worked at John Deere, and they had these beautifully crafted cars with custom paint jobs. Naturally my car won, they were all kinds of pissed off. It was great.

Morning Horde. Here in mid Hudson starting in afternoon we are looking at 2-6 inches of snow and then freezing rain the rain through tomorrow. Slop storms. Then it will freeze and the potholes will rule

I'm sort of impressed that those unattended generators don't get stolen. Even where I live, in my paranoia about the class and character of my neighbors, the generator gets secured when the power goes out. Sick Elon on Iran next.
I'm convinced that Elon is doing DOGE because what other mountain is there for him to climb? People who know Elon often say that Musk is obsessed with efficiency and its a signature mark at all of his enterprises. Just like Trump, who has built a real estate empire and is looking for something more difficult than NYC unions and bureacrats to bat around keeps going for MAGAing the ultimate project, Elon sees the former US as his chef-daeuvre work. Then he will take on Mars. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at February 15, 2025 08:24 AM (a4flb) 196
Iran is closer to internal collapse than many other westerners realize. The running of generators for power is a hallmark of 3rd world cities, in countries that can’t maintain a stable electricity grid, If a government cannot manage that, it can’t manage anything.
