49 This painter, Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, was born in 1774 and died in 1833. This painting dates from 1816. Guerin also painted numerous mythology/classical works like Morpheus and Iris and Aurora and Cephalus. His Portrait of a Young Girl is, to put it mildly, very, uh, erotic.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 17, 2025 09:41 AM (J2vNu)

50 From....sigh...,wikipedia

Resistance to conscription soon escalated into a full rebellion, known as the War in the Vendée. Soon after, De la Rochejaquelein and his compatriots started fighting the troops of the French Republic with Maurice d'Elbée and the Marquis de Bonchamps from April 1793. There, he gave his famous order, "Mes amis, si j'avance, suivez-moi! Si je recule, tuez-moi! Si je meurs, vengez-moi!" (literal translation: "Friends, if I advance, follow me! If I retreat, kill me! If I die, avenge me!").

Leading a few thousand Vendéan peasants, De la Rochejaquelein gained his first victory over the French Revolutionary Army on 13 April, took part to the taking of Bressuire on 3 May,[5] in the Battle of Fontenay-le-Comte on 25 May and in the Battle of Saumur on 9 June. At Fontenay he was famous for his contempt for danger, wearing three red handkerchiefs; on his head, around his neck and at his waist to defy the Republican gunners.[6] After Fontenay his companions decided that they would also wear three red handkerchiefs so that De la Rochejacquelin could not be singled out.[7

Interesting. The artist paid attention to the details. The..um...bulge..in the trousers....um...yeah. Hands look good. Lots of background noise.
One problem, for me, is his expression. In that situation one would expect steely resolve, or perhaps righteous fury, or even horror or fear. This guy looks like he's thinking .... "Hey! I hit something! Wow! I wasn't expecting that".

I give it a rating of 7 of 10. Best I can do.

What's interesting is how afraid modern society is of male genitalia. All the toy animals, babies, Ken dolls, it mean it's not a secret, and in an age of riding breeches, the junk was going to show.

I forget the context, but there was some incident where toy version of a non-western leader was developed, and of course it looked like a eunuch, which was a grave insult.

Conversely, displays of men in 'heroic nudity' are now assumed to ba a gay thing, which is just odd.

133 Well, the painting doesn't lack melodrama. I like Guerin's technical skills but his choice of subjects, as in this one, is overly dramatic. That was popular during the period. The sense of struggle, a losing struggle, is clear with the few rebels versus the approaching larger force with their bayonets just showing on the right. The fierce determination on the faces of the soldiers, the bright colors and careful drawing of clothing and flag is excellent. The discordant note for me is the staring expression on the main figure. It's probably supposed to be noble or idealistic but it seems inappropriate for the rest of the image.

Many of Guerin's paintings have similar, highly dramatic looks. But the Wiki page also has a simple portrait of a young woman, topless and vulnerable, that is moving and remarkable.

At one time, bayonet drill was very important and there was even a sport of bayonet fencing.

By WW II, bayonets were kind of a psychological thing, making the troops feel scarier, looking scarier.

A shotgun bayonet is a good idea if you are in close quarters, say clearing a room or a trench. Harder for the bad guy to grab the muzzle.

Why do these statues have to be naked? The people probably didn’t walk around naked all the time.

It takes getting over a mental hurdle to begin trying it in different things, but use it for when you're browning chicken or pork chops, or in place of butter in a non-cake / non-sweet recipe. Although I bet there's a place for it in cakes that I just haven't figured out yet.

350 AI Overview (in part) "..., the painting portrays him as a heroic figure, often with his arm in a sling, signifying his bravery in battle despite being wounded."

A somewhat interesting rich kid:

Wikipedia, in part, (Henri de la Rochejaquelein) "was the youngest general of the Royalist Vendéan insurrection during the French Revolution. At the age of 21, he served as commander-in-chief of the Catholic and Royal Army.

Resistance to conscription soon escalated into a full rebellion, known as the War in the Vendée.

On 13 September the thumb of his right hand was shattered by a bullet during an engagement with Republicans at Martigné-Briand but he continued to fire at his opponents. (How the sling ties into the painting.)

While trying to pursue a guerrilla war against the Republicans, he was killed by a Republican soldier near Nuaillé on 28 January 1794.

Thanks for the French history lesson.

BTW "our" George Washington was 43 years old when he became the commander of the Continental Army on June 19, 1775. He was 57 years old when he assumed the title of President.

But that year was so devastating to this country, I am willing to give him a second chance. But I will say, as much as I enjoy it, NASCAR is an absolute cluster right now. 387 Under the direction of représentants en mission from Paris, Republican Jacobin forces began slaughtering Vendean royalists, irrespective of their age, gender or activities. The National Convention, having already sanctioned the Reign of Terror, authorised the formation of 12 army divisions called the Colonnes Infernales (‘Infernal Columns’.

Under the command of General Louis Marie Turreau, these columns swept through the Vendée in the first half of 1794. They crisscrossed the province, tearing down buildings, burning crops and leaving death and destruction in their wake.

The instruments of the Terror were then focussed on the Vendée, where more than 6,000 people – including 400 children – were executed. Some were guillotined but most were shot, stabbed, bayoneted or forcibly drowned. Farms, crops and forests were burned across the Vendée, affecting the innocent as well as the rebels. Action against the potentially rebellious Vendée would continue as late as 1796.

Modern estimates of Vendeeans killed, 200,000.

389 The jacobins didn't just kill about 200k civilians in the Vendee. They systmatically raped tens of thousands of women prior to bayonetting them, and later swapping to drowning them because stabbing was too much work.

A preview of the later horrors of leftist collectivism.
