They say it can't be won
The way the game is run
But if you choose to stay
You end up playing anyway

11 Another depressing Russian art piece though I like the color palette a lot. I think that’s why CBD likes Andrew Wyeth so much. He has the same melancholy feel to most of his paintings.

28 I still think it is funny that Westerners viewed Eastern European women as chronically unattractive babushkas right up until communism fell.

Then suddenly everyone noticed they can be real stunners. Amazing all the positive things dumping socialism can do isn't it?

Along those same lines it increased the lifespans of the people in the Soviet bloc by 10-20%.

86 Speaking of Jackson Square...

Long Ago and Far Away several years after I'd graduated high school,

I was in N.O. at Jackson Square and saw a gal I used to sit next to in high school. She was trying to be an artist and (hopefully) sold paintings and made drawing of tourists in Jackson Square.

I walked over and talked to her for a bit. She said she was doing okay which was nice to hear. That's about it. I never saw her again.

She was a tall, willowy blonde. Not a knock-out but pretty enough. Welp, I hope life went well for her.

The kids watch a YT channel, "Vasya in the Hay," in which a relatively well-off Russian travels to dying villages and other places where poor families live. Sergei tries to get them some relief: groceries, transportation, a heater, etc.

Once in a while he films before-and-after of haircuts and new clothes; the kids like that.
There was one boy who was already handsome.
He looked like a movie star afterward.

Luntz should be trusted because he has never played fast and loose with the truth? Although, not underestimating how stupid Americans are is pretty sound reasoning.

How many times do we need to watch the same movie? We have been waiting for the people to see his despotic ways and they don’t. Democrats are Charlie Brown with the football. We need to take a lot more drastic measures than screaming in the wind.

The "slow pace of democracy" was built into the Retrumplicans plan from the beginning. Forty years of Republican obstructionism have taken a grievous toll.

This was another one of those smart political ideas from Trump. Not only did he gain a friend in NYC, but he punished the Dem establishment for making a specifically political case - remember Adams wasn't investigated until he publicly complained about all the illegals going to NYC...

But to complete the political move Trump's DOJ should find several blue shitty mayors who kept silent about the illegals who were doing the same things Adams did (because almost all of them do) and prosecute them to the hilt.

I fully believed that the cuts Trump could enact unilaterally would have been extremely limited and not terribly effective. That he'd have to go through Congress, and that there'd be internal resistance against EOs directing the cutting of funds (the lack of firing in his first term was the seed of that thought).

If federal spending has gotten so completely unmoored from statute, with appropriations written the same way legislation is ("the secretary can do whatever, like, you know, he wants and stuff"), then Trump has a WHOLE lot more leeway than I thought.

On the boulevard
Vladimir Makovsky (1846-1920)

"Vladimir Makovsky touched upon in his 1877 painting On the Boulevard one of the most acute problems in Russia at the time, which may seem distant and irrelevant now, but to his contemporaries it must have seemed quite typical. The main problem of the picture is the departure of the peasants in the city to earn money. The breadwinner was forced to leave his family: parents, wife, children, life without them was disrupted, the family connection weakened and even disappeared, and the usual foundations of the village world collapsed, as did the patriarchal world. The main characters of "On the Boulevard" are a wife who came to her young husband in Moscow and the husband himself, who, like many others, went to the city to earn money and changed beyond recognition."
---
I like the painting a great deal as I can almost feel the wife's great sadness.

Beyond the fence is pretty and bright, forward of the fence where they're seated is darker, more dead & dreary.

Yet I think I could place it within the rotation of paintings that are occasionally out for viewing.

Thanks.

But you have to track every penny if you sell $600.01 worth of stuff online.

I was working on my taxes earlier this month. One bank I have a small savings account with hadn't published a 1099-INT yet so I waited as they said they'd have it done the 15th. Well the 15th rolled around still no form.

So I googled why and the answer is they don't have to give you a form if you earned less then $10 BUT you are still legally obligated to report that income. So I went through and tabulated my interest manually and it was like $8 for the year. F the government and their insane, stupid regulations.

I have felt since the first time I started following politics at age 25 on Sept 12, 2001, that you can't reason with anyone who can justify the mass murder of babies in the womb. Anyone who can be convinced to justify, support and promote that abomination can be convinced into supporting any number of other atrocities, corruption and immoral behavior.

I know that there are limits to 401ks and stuff (roughly $23,000 per year), but if you're going for a decade maxing out, plus growth, you should have something like half a million just there, at least. Sure, there's a tax penalty to getting it, but that's gotta be something.

Plus, investments. People should be investing beyond that, especially at that income level.

But...nothing. Probably the 401k, but not maxed out. Not much else.

A few years ago, Gordon Dahl, an economist at UC San Diego, set out to measure how Trump’s 2016 victory might have affected conception rates in the years following. And he and his colleagues found a clear effect: Starting after Trump’s election, through the end of 2018, 38,000 fewer babies than would otherwise be expected were conceived in Democratic counties. By contrast, 7,000 more than expected were conceived in Republican counties in that same period. (The study, published in 2022, was conducted before data on the rest of Trump’s term were available.) Over the past three decades, Republicans have generally given birth to more kids than Democrats have. But during those first years of the first Trump administration, the partisan birth gap widened by 17 percent. “You see a clear and undeniable shift in who’s having babies,” Dahl told me.

271 I know a fair number of upper middle class left leaning LIVs. They have high paying jobs in tech, healthcare, government or NGOs, and they immediately spend everything they earn.

They have multimillion dollar houses, new SUVs (often electric), "help" around the house, take foreign vacations, each out a lot, and on and on.

And they regularly tell me two things:

1) We need to tax the wealthy. Those assholes need to feel the pain so the government can "help" normal people...like them.

2) They are tapped out and need tax relief. "Normal" people like them should be getting a serious tax cut.

282 Just wait until DoGE gets access to the Treasury's bond auction database. Bond auctions are when the Fed sells huge (trillions) chucks of government debt to others... including foreign countries. Those chunks are in the form of bonds, notes, bills, TIPS (treasury inflation protected securities) and other financial "instruments."

The massive US debt isn't just some fictitious number on a times square board... it's actually held by various entities and institutions. That probably want their money back.

294 Different types of debt, obviously.

Domestic debt is largely held by financial institutions. Useful as a hedge vehicle. Also interestingly enough, National Banks are required by law to buy treasuries in certain circumstances. Also note this includes those savings bonds that parents buy their kids for their birthday instead of things they actually want.

Foreign debt is what it sounds like.

I took a pic of Miss Linda holding little gray Siberian cat Dagny in her arms out in the snow. There's a flake of snow right by Linda's lower lip, which she says makes her look like she's a trailer park-dwelling ciggie smoker. (I told her I'd photoshop that out.)

Despite her thick triple coat, Dagny was not pleased at the cold, or maybe at being outdoors, and let out a screech -- odd, for a cat who is nearly mute in her day-to-day life.

346 The US debt is bought and sold through those auctions I mentioned. It's a financial vehicle to manage the debt. The Treasury buys it back when it's advantageous to do so and auctions it off when it's not.

IMO it's a glorified shell game with a shit ton of money.

347 A fun contrast happened while we drove this weekend.

Dolley, who works in cybersecurity, was ranting about a flaw in a security system and a specific case she was dealing with. It essentially amounted to, "No one should treat SSNs as PPI. it's not PPI. All you need is to download Telegram and you can get everyone's SSN and birthdate without trying."

While Musk is being accused of stealing everyone's SSN.

It tickled me.

352 The 'free' money you get from your employer might just cover the taxes you have to pay when you try to access that money.

In my own situation, if I don’t have to touch my 401k until the minimum distribution requirement kicks in, and I’m in a place where I only need to withdraw the minimum, the tax hit will be negligible.
II’m hoping Trump will raise the MRD age.

They're also preparing for when mom and auntie need assisted living, too.

Medicaid is entitled to personal care. Not so with Medicare as it doesn't cover custodial care like personal care assistance for daily living activities like bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom, even if homebound.

Deals can be made to get mom and auntie into the county home or a decent assisted living facility for so much cheaper if you know somebody.

Even better if he announced a one time tax-free rollover from a 401k to a Roth. That would be a significant help to retirees.

366 The 401k.
Loan strangers part of your paycheck to play with every week for your entire career. Maybe they will pay it back, maybe it will be gone entirely when you need it. Maybe you'll make $0.09. Maybe you'll make $1,000 to buy fuel oil. Maybe you'll lose $300,000 the year before you retire. It's fun! It's exciting!
Come for the uncertain earnings. Stay for the whims of Wall Street and Democrats.

Posted by: Bulg at February 18, 2025 10:41 AM

We didn't know for sure we were Saami until genetic tests. My great-grandparents didn't advertise the fact because they intended to move home (Grandma's US birth certificate is in Finnish, for example). It was a big deal in the UP when Norway finally ended their sterilization program against Saami. Sweden had one, too; not sure when that ended.

According to some relatives, the persecution of reindeer herders is through bureaucracy. Like try to get permission to shoot bears that are attacking your herd. Just document all the calves killed and send it in. We'll get back to you.

IRS - You generally have to start taking withdrawals from your IRA, SIMPLE IRA, SEP IRA, or retirement plan account when you reach age 73.

You’re not required to take withdrawals from Roth IRAs, or from Designated Roth accounts in a 401(k) or 403(b) plan while the account owner is alive. However, beneficiaries of Roth IRAs or Designated Roth accounts are subject to the required minimum distribution rules.

>At age 73, your factor would be 26.5. Divide that into what you have $ wise, that's your MRD.
