Minnesota Supreme Court: Vehicle interior is a ‘public place’ if driven on public roads
The case of a BB gun under a driver’s seat led the courts to consider whether the interior of a privately owned vehicle is a public place when driven on public property. https://tinyurl.com/3r489ubk My hot take: Bigger ramifications than just that. Cops will no longer need "permission" to search anything if you are in a public place. Your wallet is a public place when you are in abpublic place. Say like USAID, right? We authorized that. That's a creature of Congress." "If they try to do something like that, then you're going to get into a constitutional argument or crisis,"
Rep. Bacon (R-NE) agreed, noting some federal workers who were fired had to be hastily recalled because the DOGE employees didn't do their homework. Fuming? While in the fetal position in the corner of their office begging, “please don’t hit me, please please I love you sir”. All they have to do is gather together and impeach Trump. They have the means to change things but they refuse to do it. My hot take:
Bigger ramifications than just that. Cops will no longer need "permission" to search anything if you are in a public place. Your wallet is a public place when you are in abpublic place. Your purse, briefcase, backpack, etc are all "public places" now if you are in public. Posted by: rickb223 Read the case: Minnesota v. Kyaw Be Bee. The case is wholly statutory interpretation of Minnesota law. That makes it dubious application to US Scotus caselaw which has NOT declared the inside of cars as 'public'. Instead, they allow something called plain view where the cop can look to see contraband in a legal stop for moving violations or during a Terry stop. Apparently, the defendants had tools and a jack in their hands near a car and then left immediately in another car when observed. They were stopped (Terry) and Bee had a suspended driver's license. Normally in that case, the car is impounded and would have been searched anyway (inventory) but this was apparently a search incident to arrest (thus searching the grabbable area around the defendant applies (Chimel v CA and others)). Sloppy case that a better lawyer might have won. Posted by: whig at February 20, 2025 10:23 AM (ctrM5) 212

Read the case: Minnesota v.
Regardless: The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the interior of a vehicle is a “public place” if it is driven on public roads. End result? Minnesotans are fucked. Until a case is appealed to SCOTUS. Until then, the cops are going to have a field day and totally push the limits. Posted by: rickb223 at February 20, 2025 10:42 AM (zc1Re) 298

Posted by: Uncle Ben at February 20, 2025 10:19 AM (G5+As) Alaska Eskimos (there's more than one kind) still mostly don't mind being called that (there are exceptions). It's typically Canadians who've been brainwashed by stupid white communists into thinking "Eskimo" is some kind of slur (it isn't). The main groups of Eskimos in Alaska are Inupiaq (who are very similar to the Candian Inuit) and Yupik (who definitely DO NOT like being called "Inuit"... it's like calling an Italian "French" because they both speak a romance language). Historically the two groups didn't get along. The reason they often don't mind being called Eskimos is because that distinguishes them from the other main group of Alaska Natives ("Indians"). If the Inupiaq and Yupik didn't get along, that was a minor spat compared to the relations both of them had with the Indians. There are also Aleuts, who are "sort of" Eskimos (they speak another related language). If you don't know what someone is, it's usually best to call them a native (the official term is Alaska Native). Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 20, 2025 10:50 AM (W5ArC) 330

Life was a lot better when school buses had ejection seats.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 20, 2025 10:43 AM (8zz6B) ----------- It's kind of surprising that our school busses in 6th grade (first year of forced interracial bussing) in '72-'73 didn't have seat belts -- not sure if they do now. Anywho, one of my classmates was sharing her cheetos with our school bus driver (he apparently was violating policy by eating while driving) and he started choking on one lodged in his throat as we were flying down WB I-15. He went off the freeway (fortunately mostly a desert field) while my classmate started (instinctively) pounding on his back ... eventually dislodging the cheeto. He was able to stop the bus after a couple tires blew out from hitting a big ditch pipe and we went through a chain-linked fence and a sign showing the distance in miles to the stateline and L.A. Needless to say, it could have been very bad (all the girls were screaming & crying, except one who was pretty butch then and became a lesbian); I was a bit terrified. Also, needless to say, the driver was sacked. Posted by: ShainS -- The Deep State Dies in Daylight at February 20, 2025 10:54 AM (1YwYn) 355

Regardless:
The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the interior of a vehicle is a “public place” if it is driven on public roads. End result? Minnesotans are fucked. Until a case is appealed to SCOTUS. Until then, the cops are going to have a field day and totally push the limits. Posted by: rickb223 ======= A lot depends on whether the specific law in MN was challenged by the defendant as unconstitutional in their appeal. Not apparent from the record that it was done albeit they could have done that at the appellate level. Basically, states can go above the US Constitution in providing protections to residents but not below the US Sup. Ct. 4th Amendment rulings. Reading the opinion, it appears all to revolve around statutory interpretation of a MN law where a 4th Amendment challenge to that was not part of the appeal. Strangely enough, judges are actually only supposed to address the legal questions actually posed rather than looking over every possibility. That is why a damn good appellate lawyer is needed for criminal matters because if you have shoddy representation at trial and do not preserve issues by objections, you are in a deep hole legally speaking. Be assured in one particular opinion from some guy on the internet as to those who laugh at some who take themselves way too seriously on one particular topic.
So thanks for admitting that this is less about you acting in good faith "gosh I am genuinely interested in your reasoning behind a shitpost" talk and more about needling someone for grins. I think I read that from someone earlier. ![]() Posted by: WitchDoktor at February 20, 2025 11:10 AM (egtzA) 424

I highly doubt that you're doing both at the same time in this situation.
I think you stopped being genuinely interested quite some time ago, even allowing that a shitpost was worthy of any kind of prolonged interest to begin with. Posted by: WitchDoktor at February 20, 2025 11:14 AM (egtzA) 428

Boring. Posted by: WitchDoktor at February 20, 2025 11:20 AM (egtzA) ======= Man, saying, "It's a joke," would have been clarifying. Would have probably avoided some tensions. are several countries that are similarly strict to the U.S. but the U.S. is about as strict as it gets.
