Top Story

  • AMD will not be releasing a 32GB model of the upcoming Radeon 9070XT. (Tom's Hardware)

But they will be holding a launch event on February 28, with cards expected at retail in the first week of March.

  • If 32GB of memory on your graphics card isn't enough how about 4TB? (Tom's Hardware)

    SanDisk has announced high-bandwidth flash.

Similar to high-bandwidth memory (HMB) it uses a stack of flash dies connected to a very wide bus to deliver hundreds of gigabytes per second of bandwidth.

And then, in SanDisk's plan, you put it on a video card so you have terabytes of local memory - since flash is much cheaper and smaller than DRAM.

Problem is of course that it's also a lot slower, at least for writes. But if your entire dataset can live semi-permanently on your video card, is that a problem anymore?

4 Got willowed, of course - gonna post this here for WD:

Weirddave, many years ago when my little sister passed away unexpectedly, I had to do the same things for the rest of my family as you are having to do now. Someone had to be the rock for both of my parents and for my nephew, and even for my sister's ex-husband, who found himself strangely affected by her loss, even though they had been divorced for many years.

Yes, you are grieving, but yes, you have to be the port in the storm for everyone else in your family. Thankfully, you have your own "rock" in Gingy - she is why you can be there for your family right now, and she will be there for you a few months from now when you have seen the rest of your family through to the point where they are able to "stand" again. That is when you will feel like you can fully grieve - not that you aren't grieving now, but you have to be strong right now - and you will.

For me, that was about 6-8 months later. Everyone's timeline is different - there is no set amount of time for something like this.

But I do know that when we see each other at this year's MoMe, I am going to give you a big ol' Texas hug, because I have BTDT, and I know

6 MSX is essentially the same machine as a ColecoVision in the Adam home computer configuration, but without the funky cassette drives and bizarre power routing that meant you lost the whole setup if the printer died from a power problem. Z80, TI video chip, and GI/Yamaha audio chip. (That audio chip was in a zillion other things like the Atari ST computers and appliances.)

After the Coleco devices became orphaned, a few small companies specialized in bringing over MSX software to the US market. This also served the tiny number of Spectravideo owners, which was an MSX system in all but name.

Hopefully, this MSXBOOK will support the MSX 2 spec, which was a significant upgrade.

During the period when consoles were dead and Nintendo's Famicom hadn't yet conquered the 8-bit gaming market, MSX was the happening platform in Japan for gaming. Several well known franchises had their start there, including Metal Gear.

9 High-bandwidth flash could be something the gaming sector needs in the faced of single-digit improvements over GPU generations. I'd hope to see it socketed, to allow both optional configurations and easy replacement if there are lifespan issues. Also different capacities. 1TB would be overkill for gaming for at least another decade (though it would allow multiple games to be cached, somewhat like how the hard drive was used in the original Xbox), while professional creators would have no problem exploiting 4TB for work on a bleeding edge animated movie.

12 Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals, late toilers, and early risers across the System! 'Tis Friday, Freya's Day, the consummation devoutly to be wished! I've slept about enough after last night's early wakeup, so there's that. No workout today.

Miss Linda and I made it to Texas Roadhouse in record time last night, and didn't have to wait more than a few minutes for a table. Food was pretty good (though I should *not* have ordered my steak medium well!), and the prices were no worse than many other restaurants in town and better than some. No wonder the place is popular.

So? Whassup?

Good morning Wolfus! All is well. My wife and I had lunch at a place we haven't tried before. It's sort of fru-fru and trashy all at the same time. The lady makes and sells soap, goat cheese, raises goats and chickens, etc. out of her house. From the outside, it looks exactly like you'd imagine. You know, you have to kick the chickens out of the way to open the door. BUT, inside is a terrific coffee and lunch place. She charged me $8 for a sandwich so big we both ate on it and took half home. It was fantastic. The bread was homemade and so good I wanted to cry. She's gonna bake again on Sunday and invited me to help.

The world isn't as shitty as I had thought for a long time.

25 Tonypete, your "fru-fru and trashy" place sounds great. Texas Roadhouse wanted about the same price, $12.99, for their burger w/ fries as for the small sirloin, so I went with that. But Linda's dinner, pulled pork, was about the same; and she had a coupon for a free onion mum thing. And we got sides with the dinners. $31 for both of us, some food to take home, and I left a cash 20% tip. So I've known much worse.

The place was noisy and busy even at 5:15, though. I think I'd like your home-like atmosphere place better.

27 An editor at an online short story magazine emailed me with a request for some revisions on a story I submitted to them in Jan. Three small things, though I'm not sure how to do two of them. Perhaps OrangeEnt's Literary Horde people can suggest something. If I can sell this one, perhaps I can join up with Reedsy, and I might be able to land some editing gigs through that site. We'll see.

In the meantime, my boss will probably approve the job posting for my replacement, and I'll submit that. And while I'm still wrestling with that greased alligator called The Budget, I can see how to get a hold on it and put it into its cage by mid-March's deadline -- in time for me to walk out the door on 3/31 and let my successor handle the big office move this summer. Heh, heh, heh. . . .

She was a devout Christian and prolific poet and one of her poems are the words to the Christmas hymn, "In the Bleak Midwinter" I didn't know this , but she wrote a devotional commentary on the Book of Revelation called "The Face of the Deep" in which reflections on biblical texts are interspersed with prayers. Here is one little poem:

Lizzy - we alo have a colony of barred owls that live in the neighborhood, they'll kick start a hoot en nanny every evening. The bird feeder substitutes as a hawk and falcon feeder frequently. Just a poof of feathers and zero bird activity for a bit.

158 High-bandwidth flash is a really dumb idea. Why would you want memory that isn't byte-programmable and will fail after a relatively short number of write cycles on your video card? That's not useful for AI, and it's not useful for games. Regular high-bandwidth RAM is better for both of those applications.

159 One of the things i enjoy about living in north alabama is that i frequently see bald eagles along the tennessee river. Huge nests. There's one near a boat ram, gas station that is active nearly 24 hours a day. You'd think the eagles wouldn't choose a spot to nest in that was that active.

Here's a google maps pin pointer. Use street view to see the nest. Remove the carriage return...

160 >>Lizzy - we alo have a colony of barred owls that live in the neighborhood, they'll kick start a hoot en nanny every evening. The bird feeder substitutes as a hawk and falcon feeder frequently. Just a poof of feathers and zero bird activity for a bit.

We put the bird feeder in to entertain the cat, he loves it from the enclosed porch and has no desire to experience cold or summer heat.

Ooh, would love to hear more owls!
My project for the past year has been to make my parent's back yard a bird haven for their entertainment. Got hummingbirds visiting daily last summer. Recently added several feeders, including a couple of tray feeders that attach to the back windows wo we can get some larger birds. Still experimenting with types of food. . .

163 Yes, iirc parrots are native species. They are known for nesting on Telegraph Hill. They have a very unique call when they fly.

164 We have three bald eagles at a nearby park! They're not here year round, so it's been fun looking for them in the winter/early spring months. Saw one enjoying a goose breakfast on the iced-over lake last week. Beautiful birds - and huge!

165 When I moved to CO (Jefferson Co.) in 2000, people here bragged about the 'Open Space' that had been set aside for no development. 'Oh, we have all this lovely open space. Look at the open space'.

I told them it'll be open space until somebody comes up with the right amount of money.

It's mixed residential and commercial now.

What's been done to Colorado is such a shame.
The development of high-density apartment housing is overwhelming and ugly.

Mom has maybe thirty or so ruby throated hummingbirds that she feeds and watches. Boil water and disolve about a cup of suger for each quart of water. Put up multiple little 2 to 3 ounce feeders. They'll stake out their personal feeder and have minature battle of briton air fights over them u less you have multiple feeders. Fun to listen to them, they sound like big bees. When i visit, i wear a bright red hat and they'll zoom down to see if i'm a mobile flower to feed from. Kinda spooky if you're not expecting it.

175 I come here because it's a more low key place than some of the other political threads, because people are pleasant and amusing and I like hearing about their life and days. Also, they kindly put up with my total lack of knowledge of tech issues. I also appreciate pixy's sometimes caustic comments on tech bloopers as well as the music links..
