Daily Tech News 12 February 2025

Top Story

  • Average CPU speed actually went down in 2024, for the first time in twenty years. (Twitter)

There's a lot of speculation as to why, but no clear answers. The fastest available desktop CPUs are two years old, with no replacement models in sight. Meanwhile Intel has dropped its hyper-threading support - multiple threads per CPU core - which meant multi-threaded scores declined for newer chips.

But this average includes AMD chips which still have hyper-threading, and Apple chips which never had hyper-threading, so who knows?

Tech News

  • A new attack on Google's Gemini AI lets users permanently plant false memories into the system, so that they are shared with unsuspecting users on the same account. (Ars Technica)

As far as I can tell, this doesn't affect the core Gemini training data; that's fixed irrevocably. So it doesn't persist across Google accounts, limiting the damage it can do.

But LLMs are fundamentally insecure to this kind of attack, like kindly grandmothers with confidence tricksters, and every patch is just a Band-Aid atop a growing heap of Band-Aids.

  • How Elon Musk's bid for OpenAI could gum up Sam Altman's for-profit conversion. (Tech Crunch)

OpenAI is still, in theory, a non-profit operation with a secondary for-profit company commercialising the product. The bid was made for the non-profit group which owns all the intellectual property.

The state attorneys general in California and Delaware have already filed inquiries with OpenAI over its plans and the valuation of the nonprofit entity, so Sam Altman and the commercial side of OpenAI cannot underbid in their attempt to wrest control.
"Musk is throwing a spanner into the works," said Stephen Diamond, a lawyer who represented Musk's opponents in corporate governance battles at Tesla, in an interview with TechCrunch. "He's exploiting the fiduciary obligation of the nonprofit board to not undersell the asset. [Musk's bid> is something OpenAI has to pay attention to."
Which is the last thing Altman wants right now.

  • While Tech Crunch has a sane article mentioning Elon Musk, other sites have gone as insane as The Verge. (The Register)

The writer feebly attempts to liken Elon Musk's team rooting out waste and fraud to a CPU microcode exploit, ignoring the fact that in such an analogy the CPU would be on fire to begin with.

  • Speaking of AI Google is considering using it to make Chrome change compromised passwords for you automatically. (Ars Technica)

I assume they mean in navigating the password change process for each compromised website; this is not otherwise complicated.

  • Smol GPU is an open-source GPU for RISC-V designs. (GitHub)

Meant more as a learning tool than a real product, but if you are synthesizing a small RISC-V core on an FPGA - and who isn't, these days - and need a GPU to go with it, it might be worth a look.

5 Almost, almost . . .!

Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers! 'Tis Woden's Day, if only by a few hours here, and soon we will be halfway along the winding dusty trail to the weekend!

Thanks, all, for the comments yesterday about my impending retirement. It seems I have no one else to talk to about it -- Linda does not want to discuss it and my co-workers, with one exception, are too young to envision such a thing as "not *having* to work." (I was like that too in my forties.)

Anyway! We're going to make another try at getting into Texas Roadhouse after I finish work on Thursday. I'm sure the place will still be crowded even then, but nothing like a Friday or Saturday. (I hope.) I dread the traffic, I dread the wait for a table, but hey, Valentine's Day, right?

9 I always like those musical interludes with anime. Not a big anime fan but some of it is interesting looking anyway. Except Cowboy Beebop, which is one of the top 10 greatest TV shows in history. Really. It's the only anime I own. Its anime for people who are meh about anime.

10 And despite not feeling like it, as usual, I have to go work out. I try to get three times a week at a minimum, and I missed Sunday, so I have only one session in so far. Today and Friday, I guess; it may be raining tomorrow.

13 I didn't get to listen the the entire press briefing from the Oval Office with Trump and Musk so I'll have to listen today. I knew that Musk was brilliant and I've always thought he was rather a nice looking man, but he's funny as well. When he came over here to go to UPenn he must have had to fight off women with a stick, although if he has eight kids there were obviously times when he was not fighting them off.

And the reason I didn't get to listen to him last night was because I was doing a Bible study with some of the folks at the senior center whom I normally do a worship service with once a month. The Bible study new thing for me with that group. They had a nice man who did it before but he is 90, God bless him, and his family didn't want him to drive over there anymore. Anyway, I was a little nervous but I think it went well and I got home before the somewhat heavier snow hit.

The Lord wrote the pages of my book but I can't imagine what it would take for me to go back to work. At least not a job with a commute, a boss, a salary... and working from home on a computer is out because, well, computers.

Trying to keep up with my yard/house and stuff I do at the widow's place, which is a privilege, is plenty.

33 TeeJ -
A friend of mine who provided some very sage and helpful guidance back in the day (30+ years ago) asked me to come help him work a really big project. His guidance is what got me out of the 'touch labor' aspect of the job and into 'engineering and certification' side of the job, so I wanted to return the favor.

I do have to admit though, not needing to work to pay for a house and a car and all the other things we've accumulated and paid off does put an entirely different perspective on "work".

49 I see about 70,000 federal workers have applied for early retirement. Their deals are better than most average private company deals. Having gone through this with a private company, you have to look at it as a good deal if you have more than 20 years. Even less time in the government service is pretty good. I wonder what that will do to the huge growth in real estate values in the DC area, of which I would move on as quickly as possible, to a safer place to live. DC isn't that safe with a high murder rate nearly every week.

The media's job isn't reporting the news. Its job is to shape narratives for their masters. Plain, understandable, language is foreign to them All they know are lies and propaganda. There entire worldview is based on that.

Little gray Dagny is still aloof a good part of the time, as if she's a queen and I'm a trusted household servant or courtier. Yes, people say cats are aloof, and I've always replied, "What kind of cats do *you* know?" But she is. Likes to be petted, but doesn't come over for it the way the black one does.

68 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

19 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor. I'm very tired, since one of my pups was clamoring to go outside most of the night (there was something awful in the yard that she was desperate to finish eating). There is supposed to be snow tonight turning to rain by early morning, which I hope happens, since I have a dental appointment at 8am.

With luck, I'll be out by 9 and then can go downtown for breakfast, which I haven't done in a while. For now, I have a couple of hours' work to do and then I'm hoping it will be an easy day so I can take a nice long nap when I clock out.

Hope you all have a lovely day.

Do they like to play if you give them the opportunity? Mine always liked it when I dragged a ribbon or string around the corner. Absolutely irresistible for them. "Must chase thing that just disappeared!"

Back when I was into radio, I had several replacement metal whips mobile/vehicle use around. A game I'd play with one of my cats was "chase the bug". I'd hold on to a whip, placing the teardrop end down on the carpet and spin myself around in a circle. One of my cats would go absolutely NUTS chasing that teardrop end around and around. One time after we quit doing this for about 15 minutes, she was literally panting when I picked her up (never saw a cat pant before till that point.) I made sure to limit that game to a shorter time period in future.

We've slready established dumping the penny saves $179 million a year. Not putting up wetbacks in ritzy nyc hotels saves another $59 million for a total of $238 million.

That goes a long way to helping the people of Lahania, Hawaii and Western NC & Eastern TN without costing the feral government a dime.

Do we really need 4.3 billion new pennies every year? There's STILL 4.3 billion in circulation from last year. And 4.3 billion from the year before. And 4.3 billion from the year before that.

Here's an idea. How about we mint new coinage in even years and save close to a billion dollars every other year? Nothing says we HAVE to mint coins every year.

Indirectly with one degree of separation by definition.

EVERYONE who pays in is by definition living off of the general fund economic impulse.

The racket set up in the 60s and coming to fruition in the 90s is federal civil service unions get to negotiate with a government largely ran by the politicians those unions subsidize largely creating a massive capital pool who nominate judges who alter the definition of fiduciary duty to "public interest" which allows the politicization of the TSP "funds."

As happy as I am that precedent backs us, understand that the democrats are not into honoring precedents from the last 40 years let alone the last 160.

Donkey judges have made up their mind that they are the unassailable rulers of the entire nation from their circuit benches.

The ONLY way to fight this is to have a GOP judge make a directly inverse ruling ordering all national funds frozen and force the SCOTUS to referee the fight which we will lose.

Losing that fight will justify Trump with a GOP Legislature to defund all the baby bell circuit courts and force all Federal level jurisprudence on SCOTUS.

And here I thought all along it was because the State of California imposed energy efficiency regulations on the computer industry allowing them to only sell computers that met their strict requirements.† When you tell computer manufacturers that laptops can't use as much energy as last year, you get CPUs designed to operate at lower speeds to achieve this arbitrary goal.

154 This has to stop. "Public service" unions should have no - repeat, no - collective bargaining power.

Every time someone wants about banning the AFL/CIO, Teamsters, et al because its really just organization mob, we are given a history lesson about how cruel employers were exploiting workers during the Great Depression.

Well, we aren't in a Great Depression, we have indeed.com and one hell of a welfare safety net and trade schools everywhere begging for wanna-be welders, electricians, etc.

Which leaves the "cruel employer" excuse. What the public union employees are saying is even though their team of negotiators is sitting on both sides of the table, that the tax payer (the employer) is natively cruel, cheap and sadistic and thus the poor, poor government drone needs protection afforded by the tax-payer against the same tax-payer.

Its a racket, or more likely they view themselves as citizens of an overlord entity that conquered the former United States, and We The People are a vanquished enemy.

Or diseased livestock. They are of a different species or race where they live and operate under different rules and benefits and any change to that would be a coup d'etat.

159 If a group of civilians ran the PEU racket in the private economy the DOJ would label them a Mafia and RICO them into oblivion.

161 The President and his team should not take any shit off those crazy judges. I'm glad they are pushing back.

Hey, crazy judges! Let the man work or we won't have a country left for you to be crazy in anymore. Dumbasses.

163 They sound healthy and happy, this is good. :-)

Do they like to play if you give them the opportunity? Mine always liked it when I dragged a ribbon or string around the corner. Absolutely irresistible for them. "Must chase thing that just disappeared!" . . .

Also, this might amuse you:

G & R, cooI cartoon. I'm fortunate that they don't call in the middle of the night. Or very often at all. Dagny is *very* silent -- not mute, I've heard her screech, but it's rare. Stirling meeps when he wants me to turn on the faucet so he can drink from the stream.

Yes, they love to chase something around a corner. And the "Flippety-Fish" toy I bought for the late Chekov D. Siberian some years ago entertains them wonderfully.

She is doing great, there is a mass under her left armpit they want to ultrasound but her prognosis has been so good for so long they removed her port.

Hope you and yours are doing well.

165 Happy news! After just 2 weeks on targeted gene therapy, my tumor marker has dropped from a high of 586 to just 91 (half of my original number back in October)! It should be below 37.

So excited - this means the therapy is working!

167 I've undergone four prostate biopsies over the last dozen years or so. They're not so bad. The problem most have is a doctor who won't wait long enough after injecting the numbing agent before beginning to extract the cores.

The urologist who performed my second one got an earful from me prior to me leaving his office.

I fired him the next day and went through my GP to find another one.

They put me completely under which is "odd."

I think it is because they know I have a very fucked up pain threshold.

No, sir.

Wife watched all of it last night. I stopped watching after the working group.

Should radiation be ordered they insert a gel up da butt to minimize neighboring tissue damage.

A whole different planet of pain.

My condolences, I don't feel pain like normal folks in some ways.

I worked in a dynamic tactical environment with a 15cm hold in my right side from an incisive hernia for four years until I finally got the thing patched.

Had a cyst removed from my neck without any local anasthesia and was making the medics being trained on field surgery laugh with the play by play as the PA did his thing.

I hurt my hip ~33 years ago in a pretty bad fall and the secret to not feeling pain like most people counter-intuitively is to be in mid-grade pain for decades.

Don't tell me, sven, that you have forgotten the popular companion show to the 60's "Wagon Train".

"Bureaucrat Train" featured the hitherto unknown tales and trials of the caravans of regulators, inspectors, printers and front office staff who proceeded west in parallel with the hardy pioneers. Why, their struggles to set up the presses and roll off the latest volume of regulations each night tugged at one's heartstrings!

178 At Wikipedia, on the Steve Witkoff page, there's the usual Born; Children; Spouse; Organization founded; Education, and then:

President: Donald Trump

(It was Steve Witkoff's jet that flew Marc Fogel home from Russia.)

I guess because he "serves as the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East" but it looks funny when it's on a list of biofacts like that.

They charged us a 100 bucks to check that back axle Nadine, because THEY ARE SAVING US!

Now get your sweet ass in the wagon and let's get to the Williamette Valley and set up some bureaucracy of our own.

It depends on the software being ran, and your desired use.

It sucks for gaming largely, is eminently useful for video editing.
