Evening and morning to all the old lags, recalcitrant lurkers and posters, late toilers and early risers! 'Tis 'Tiu's Day, which means that we're about 2/5 of the way to the weekend. Something to look forward to, no?
As I mentioned on the ONT, iacta alea est -- "the die is cast." I've submitted my retirement letter to my boss with my date of March 31. Now we have to post the job listing and deal with candidates -- I've agreed to be part of all that -- while I have to wrangle the budget for next year. By the time my successor starts, it'll pretty much be settled in its corral. But he or she will have to deal with organizing the move to the new building this summer. Good luck with that; I'm buggin' out. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 11, 2025 04:06 AM (omVj0) 5

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at February 11, 2025 04:09 AM (O7YUW) 6
The other thing . . . It's been over a month since I wrote to my former mother-in-law, expressing my condolences over the 2015 death of her daughter, the ex-Mrs. Wolfus No. 2. The card has not been returned, so I assume it got there. No word. So I also assume she wants nothing to do with me. (Though it could be that she is gone herself, or gaga -- she'd be 84 -- and her granddaughter has no idea who I am.)
I've done what I could. So be it, and I'm free of that family for good and all. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 11, 2025 04:09 AM (omVj0) 7
Okay, c'mon Horde, Wolfus and I can't be the only ones up this early.

And the move plan was still up in the air. But now the move is settled, and I'm getting out from under. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 11, 2025 04:11 AM (omVj0) 9

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at February 11, 2025 *** Zilch, I'm afraid. I've mentioned the date, and commented that my taxes next year will be weird (three months of salary plus vacation time, twelve of SS, nine of pension!), and gotten silence. As it stands, in early April I plan to have some maintenance done on the Buick. Then I'll drive up in the second week of April to look at SW Indiana and NW Kentucky, and talk to some people on the ground there. I haven't done a real road trip in too long, so the fun of driving is something to look forward to. Maybe, when she sees I'm serious and this will really happen, she'll actually discuss this. Maybe. Okay; coffee, a small pipe, a slice of toast & peanut butter. Time to shave and shower.
Yes, I plan to continue with much of this after I retire -- though I won't have to prepare my lunch ahead of time, and I want to go to bed later and sleep later. But I'm an early morning person now. It's odd. In my twenties and thirties I figured, if God had wanted us to be up before ten am, he'd have made it happen later in the day. Now, I hate to waste the quiet of an early morning. When Trump finished his oath of office during his first term, impeachment proceedings had begun. Now? He bulled through so quickly, the opposition didn't have time to set up a counter. As for the judges, I'm quite certain that Trump's legal team was given the heads up about what he was going to do on day one and they went through the plans first. I expect tears from the left when the judges are ignored and their cases thrown out. Posted by: NR Pax at February 11, 2025 05:35 AM (RjOoY) 42

https://tinyurl.com/5at2kca6 Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 11, 2025 05:38 AM (a1415) So, she makes explosive statements, about an issue which is not a federal matter, in a manner which shields her from either criminal prosecution or civil lawsuit, in the event of falsehood, which could have the effect of improving her chances to be elected to state-side office in South Carolina. Do I have that correct? Now, it may be that the allegations are true, and should be prosecuted and punished severely, but she went about this in a typically politician manner. Make an allegation which will ruin lives, true or not, while ensuring that she is shielded from the consequences of her actions. Nicely put. The sad thing is that there is still some spirit of discovery and energy in them, it is just tamped down effectively by governments that are convinced that their own function is the highest calling of man.

Posted by: I used to have a different nic at February 11, 2025 06:08 AM (ExV1e) I'm purely speculating, and talking generally, but if she *did* take these allegations to police, along with the evidence she claims to have, and they did nothing to protect the powerful, then she was right to use her position to carve through the bullshit. It is the flip side of the justice system. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but only when the system tasked with determining guilt is allowed to operate properly. Evil people misappropriating our rights as their shield seems to be a recurring theme. Posted by: Don Black at February 11, 2025 06:14 AM (AOsQT) Does it really? She could have made those statements outside the House chamber. It would have had the exact same effect on everyone else involved. But she didn't. She made them in the one location that shielding her from the consequences of making that statement. The allegation should absolutely be investigated and, assuming evidence can be found, prosecuted. If her statement is truthful, the perpetrators should probably be executed but, at the very least, never see the outside of prison again. But she's making these statements about someone with whom she was in a long-term romantic relationship. The idea that no one, man or woman, has ever lied about the person they've broken up with is ludicrous. And she made the statement where she could not be held to account if she is lying. Used to be that single-board computers were cheap. In many cases you would buy the bare board and solder all the parts yourself. In about 1990 I built a great MC6809 based computer like that. Nowadays with surface-mount components, that's not doable but price should be low for the basic system.
