Cat Is Rescued After Five Days Trapped Underground

doof-kitteh.jpg

Rescuers in Scotland saved an exhausted cat who was trapped underground during a storm for 5 days.

The SPCA was called to the site of a Dundee apartment building where the cries of 15-year-old Cleo the Bengal cat had gotten the attention of residents.

Cleo became trapped when she squeezed through a tiny hole to escape the chaos of Atlantic Storm Eowyn which recently battered the UK with winds and rain the likes of which haven’t been seen for 26 years.

***

“After several attempts to lure Cleo out with food, planks of wood, and rope, we quickly realized she didn’t have enough energy to climb out on her own,” said Animal Rescue Officer Stephanie Smillie. “That’s when the incredible Scottish Fire and Rescue team stepped in.”

“After carefully tearing up some floorboards, they discovered a tiny trap door leading into the foundations from the building’s kitchen. With their help, we were finally able to reach Cleo and free her.”

Strange Geography – "Wrong Way Overlap" Highways

Spend enough time driving and you may eventually find yourself on a road which can make you forget which way you're heading!

doof-wrongway.JPG

Overlapping highways with contradicting directional signs

It is common for two different US routes to overlap (meaning they are concurrent along the same highway for a certain distance before splitting apart again). It is less common for three (or even more) US routes to overlap. For example, traffic heading west from Cody, Wyoming, towards Yellowstone is on US 14, US 16, and US 20 (all at the same time).

Also, it is not uncommon for at least two concurrent routes to be signposted with different cardinal directions. For example, drivers heading east on Colfax Avenue in Denver will see signs for both "East US 40" and "South US 287".

Sometimes the two routes are signed in opposite directions. For example, heading east from Wytheville, Virginia, a short segment of interstate carries not only northbound I-81 and southbound I-77, but also northbound US 11 and southbound US 52. This arrangement is sometimes referred to as a "wrong-way overlap", or a "which-way overlap". These are a little more rare, but nothing to get too excited about.

However, there is a situation that is quite uncommon: three concurrent US routes, each with a different cardinal direction. Here are a few examples ...

Anyone aware of others not mentioned in the article?

47 Doctors warning patients not to put spring roles up their anus.

That was the wrong hole, buddy.

It's why the brochure on stoma care says "...though you never want to use the stoma for intercourse..."

That's why, at year's end, the anus always has the longest list of things Emergency had to remove from it, more than all the rest of the bodily orifices combined.

One of the things that Biden and Obama brought to DC was the notion of allowing substantial corruption, but then using that corruption to arrest people if they were getting in the way.

I appealed.

The account was restored in about half an hour (possibly considerably less -- I took a nap and the account was working again when I got up). I forget the exact wording... something like "We've investigated and determined that the person who reported you is a whiny little bitch."

I think this is the second time I've caught a ban in the Musk-era X. Both times it was quickly restored after an appeal.

104 World War II bases were in some cases named after Confederate generals in a show of unity and reconciliation, something that was considered necessary to fight a war overseas.

Leftists have very little sense of history, because all they have been taught is how to emote. Their schools have failed them.

One of the first things a good historian will explain to the student, any teacher really, is that when speaking of the distant past, you cannot hold those people to modern standards of conduct. It is so basic a reflex, to be sure. One problem is history is messy, and complicated. It is also usually incomplete, biased, or mangled in translation.

Another is that it is simply too convenient by half for the critic to claim “those people were evil, I being so much better/smarter than those icky people back then, I wouldn’t have done what they did”. This is not necessarily the case, not at all. We see evidence every day where people in positions of great responsibility fail to live up to the ideals of hundreds or even thousands of years ago, much less the ideals of today, or their oath of office, or the law.

110 Speaking of taxes, anyone in the Horde have experience with estate taxes? This one looks pretty straightforward... she had no income other than a couple of pensions and social security. No real estate, and only a few bucks in the bank (the nursing home ate up what assets she had).

Any gotchas here? Frankly, the estate isn't large enough to make it worth hiring a professional if that can be avoided.

On the other hand, there are some pissed-off relatives involved, so I need to be careful. Not that they really have a leg to stand on (I was named administrator in the will, and she explicitly didn't leave anything to any of them), but I don't want them making my life any more miserable than it already is.

Once I get this one settled, then I get to work on the complicated one.

At least the next time it will be someone else's problem. They were my last two living older relatives.

112 Hilarity in Seattle -

Kshama Sawant immigrated to the US from India, got a PhD in economics, became a Trotskyite, and managed to get elected to the Seattle city council, where she was known for denouncing capitalism, and packing city council meetings with Trotskyites to try and intimidate the other council members.

She also passed a couple of resolutions denouncing the Indian government when she was on the city council.

Well, her mom back in India is sick, so she and her husband applied for visas. The Indian consulate in Seattle gave her non-Indian husband a visa, but not her, and refused to provide a reason for rejecting her.

She responded by having a sit-in with a couple of friends at the Indian consulate, who called the cops, so they left.

A sad conclusion for such a promising revolutionary.

176 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:

Meanwhile, in the Baltic States, they were celebrating today that the Baltics switched from the Russian electrical grid to the EU electrical grid.

The slight problem is that EU power is 60% more expensive than Russian power, a disparity that will only increase over time, since the EU is committed to "Net Zero", so the EU intends to close all those remaining nasty coal plants (looking at you, Poland).

The Baltics also import a third of their power, and their grid has only one land connection to Poland, plus undersea cables to Finland and Sweden, which is a potential reliability problem.

I can see the national security reason for the switch, but this is going to trash the Baltic economies.

Kurt Schlichter has an optimistic post up about this - the Trump Administration undoubtedly expected Hawaiian judges to try and block everything, and is preparing a legal response to all these claims, to quickly go to the Supreme Court.

It is good for Trump that this Rhode Island judge overreached so much - issuing the opinion without even deigning to consult with Trump's lawyers first, saying that the Secretary of the Treasury and his designated appointees can't even look at Treasury data, demanding the destruction of all the forensic analysis done thus far, and is already threatening to jail Trump and other senior officials for failure to comply with his absurd order.

A smarter judge would have been more subtle.

This includes savings accounts, deposits and refunds. In Oregon to claim that one needs a death cert and notice of trust or trusteeship, or something similar.

230 219 BREAKING: Trump Administration files reply in support of request to vacate injunction re access to Treasury Dept' databases. Filing nails constitutional problem, highlighting how extreme order is:

World War II bases were in some cases named after Confederate generals in a show of unity and reconciliation, something that was considered necessary to fight a war overseas.

It's simple retain a name, Fort Bragg, say, and claim that it is named to honor Sir William Bragg and his son, Lawence, Nobel Prize in Physics winners for the discovery of X-ray diffraction.

Fine, Fort Hood is named to honor Samuel Hood, English admiral for whom the HMS Hood was named.

One of the things I think we'll discover over the next year is that a number of senior state officials (elected and otherwise) are in the pay of the cartels.

OTOH, the lesbian governor of Oregon has a crazy girlfriend (who I believe has a history of drug abuse), and this sounds just like the thing the crazy girlfriend would support.

The governor tried to make the crazy girlfriend into a senior state official, and was actually slapped down by the Oregon political establishment.

I don't usually like his "live" streams much, too long and, with the commenters, distracting, but on this one he dissects a great Beatles song.

MiladyJo and I, when we got together in the 70s, found we were both deeply appreciative of the Beatles. When Beato points out the structure of I'll Be Back, we both are wowed by what we recognized instinctively about the song back when, but enjoy the technical inspection of it now.

And it's fun that a young feller like Beato really enjoys the song, too.

We had the attorney who had written my parents' wills help us settle the estate. It took about a year total, but they had a decent size estate. My father's final tax return wasn't a big deal. His regular tax preparer did that. However, over a year after the estate was settled we got a letter from the IRS that a special form, not a 1040, had to be submitted. His tax preparer, and H & R Block said they had no experience with that form, so we had to hire a CPA to do it.
It think it was because the estate earned money after my dad died.

I think Trump is hinting at the right idea.

The Gaza region could be a beautiful place. Miles of oceanfront on the Mediterranean. One small problem is the previous inhabitants who did nothing with the place other than make it a sanctuary for terrorists.

There's no reason Israel should have to live with terrorists who want to commit a genocide on them on their border. They've had decades to build a country and they've failed. Time to move on. Let the Arab countries who never stop winning about the plight of the Arabs deal with the Palestinians.

What I really like about Trump is that he doesn't play by the old rules. Changes the rules and fix the problem.

Trump's advantage over Evil; today, he is not in a giving vein; having already announced precisely what he will do, the time to witness Decisive Force and Absolute Power against those who use pity as a weapon, and pity for themselves as a weapon against the Good and the Unknowing is over....

Ever since the 90s they've started calling Uranus and Neptune style plants "ice giants" rather than gas giants.

Ice giants are smaller and have very different compositions. With all the exoplanets being discovered, they're getting a better handle on the types of planets that seem to form out of the proto-planetary nebulae. There's still a whole lot unknown about that process.

Good grief, Nightwatch. So sorry to read that.

I'd say I sympathize, but I can't really. Starting in October of '23, I had a major life-saving surgery, a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, an MRI, two CT scans, another colonoscopy, and, finally, a sigmoidoscopy which revealed what was wrong, leading to another major surgery in April, BUT, I was blessedly anesthetized for everything.

Other than waking up with tubes stuck in me in various ways, the only nearly-intolerable pain was the initial "wound vac" changes after the second surgery. I am, obviously, deeply grateful to the science and specialists of anesthesiology.

The term "ice" in ice giant is sort of misleading. For stars, astronomers basically refer to any element heavier than helium as a "metal".

For planets, the are three, gas, ice, and rock.

Gas is basically H and He again, while ice would include oxygen, nitrogen, water, ammonia, methane and stuff like that. Rock is basically silicates and metals in the planet lingo.

Carbon would likely be "ice".

451 440, I was happy when I heard about Fort Bragg, then immediately saddened because to be honest this doesn’t make any sense. I would say more, but I can’t delete my posts here like I can on Twitter. I’m sure the guy bragged that they named the post after now i was an incredible patriot. But they had to go with someone named Bragg to make this. Ploy that kind of narrows it down. It completely defeats in my opinion the entire reason why those forts had those names. It was about reconciliation after the Civil War. It wasn’t even about them being great generals because Benning and Bragg and Polk were not. Are they now going to find some other guy named Polk some other guy named Benning?

I will drop it at this point because I only get mad and say worse things. I think they were too cute by half on this thing.

493 From Schlichter regarding the judge's temporary orders. Long read on X, but worth it.

Here is a long take on the court injunction crisis, which is less crisis than an opportunity…

OK, stop panicking about all the stupid legal decisions from leftist judges that the left is getting from judge shopping in leftist jurisdictions.
Stop. Panicking.
First, no one should be surprised by any of this. The administration certainly isn’t. We always knew exactly what they would do. Do not take the fact they are not screaming and yelling as them rolling over. They are not rolling over. There’s plenty going on behind the scenes as administration lawyers prepare their papers for the legal fight to come.
Second, since we have to have this fight, this is the time and the battleground to have it. Why? We want it settled right at the beginning of the administration so that we don’t have to deal with this down the road. And we want to fight on these orders because 1) they are manifestly the result of bad faith judge shopping and the opinions themselves are both procedural and 2) they are substantively ridiculous. They are legal jokes. Don’t listen to the dummy lawyers on Twitter

Posted by: Minnfidel at February 11, 2025 12:27 AM (4p0Xq)

494 Pt 2 Schlichter

only listen to me or the people I tell you that you can rely on. Everyone telling you these are reasoned, valid legal decisions is either a legal illiterate or thinks you are stupid.
Third, the way this fight is happening is to our advantage. Wait, you ask, we’re getting decision after decision against us! How can that be good? Because they are leaving the Supreme Court no choice. People want Trump to sound off about this, but he doesn’t need to. What’s left unstated is the fact that he can just not obey these manifestly improper orders. They say it’s a constitutional crisis now, but that becomes a real one when they push Trump too far. He’s not going to submit forever to micromanagement of the executive branch by activist District Court judges in blue cities across America. And Chief Justice Roberts knows it.
CJ Roberts and majority of the court know these are ridiculous legally, and the last thing they want to do is stake the credibility of the Court – which famously has no divisions – on this kind of nonsense. They are not going to jump on the grenade that is these decisions. There might someday be a fight with a president about something where he is legally in

497 Schlichter Part 3
There might someday be a fight with a president about something where he is legally in the wrong, but this is not that time. This is not the hill the Supreme Court will die on. Wisely, Trump’s not adding fuel to the fire by threatening to do what it’s very clear he can do, which is disobey. This provides SCOTUS the cover it needs to deal with these upstart district courts without looking like Trump strong-armed it.
So relax and let the process go forward. We’re going to win on all these injunctions, and I expect fairly quickly

This would probably be libelous if not for the Speech and Debate Clause. None of the me she named have ever been charged with anything, and Alan Wilson says she hasn't ever filed any official case about any of this.

So, if SLED has been serving warrants, she may have good evidence that she claimed.

569 If Hegseth wanted to change the fort name back to Bragg all he had to do was change it back to Bragg. Done. Boom.

This goofy changing the name back to Bragg, but not for Gen. Bragg, but a WWI solider with that name is dumb and effectively agrees that the underlying woke excuse used by Biden was justified.

All this wailing about erasing the Confederacy is to distort the cauldron that was slavery, the old South, abolition, and that it was where the forging of the foundation of modern American occurred and at the same time laid the foundation for the next 100 years of this conflict that finally came to an end in the mid 1960s.

The combatants found common ground decades later to mostly end the Civil War with reconciliation; we would be wise to heed their judgement. The statutes and placenames acknowledge the hard truth and now some 160 years later mark this truth and equally acknowledge that what was once is no more.

This clever by half renaming diminishes it all and ignores the wisdom of reconciliation that came about begrudgingly in the decades after the Civil War. Hegseth for me misstepped, may he not do it again. Time to move on.

575 One last point on this, and I will also show myself out. The veterans of the US Army, a.k.a. the union army, a.k.a. the north. Chose to honor themselves by literally placing hundreds of statues at Gettysburg. And to be clear, I think Gettysburg is the most hallowed place in this country and I love that they did that.

It was the US Army Corp. engineers that came in later and made markers to represent of CSA troops and leaders. Even today at Gettysburg there is only one statue for a confederate, that is for Longstreet, and it was placed there in recent years. All the other confederate statues are simply state statues. Each state has one.

The USA has statues down to the regiment level and even for units that were never on the battlefield. Some might say there is a statue with Robert Lee, but that is the Virginia monument.

Again, it was the US Army core of engineers that put up the placards that showed Confederate positions and what they did there.

In the end, our country knew something important was being commemorated. As a national conscience, it is simply no longer important.

584 when I used to live in the far left area called Alexandria, Virginia during this wild leftist phase, I used to laugh because I knew that there were certain regions of that area, where you would literally have to get rid of 50 street names, entire regions would have to start over. I used to enjoy that I knew what the names meant and they did not.

We have a bunch of Confederate street names too. Yes, they got rid of the statue of Lee and renamed Lee Circle, though I have no idea what it is now, and they renamed Jeff Davis Parkway to something else. But we have a Bragg Street that none of these clowns has gotten to yet, a French, a Harrison (though that could be for the President), and a Governor Nicholls.

We have World War I and II generals' street names too. Marshal Foch, for instance, and a General Pershing. The big avenue I live near used to be called Victory Drive before it was renamed General DeGaulle in honor of his visit here in 1960. Macarthur Blvd. runs behind my complex, and there's a General Collins and others.
