Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: The Lithium Battery Fire Problem Isn’t Confined to EVs; Plug-In Hybrids & Battery Storage Are Also Going Up in Flamesfear of Moss Landing re-igniting. Rainfall poses a significant threat to the Vistra battery plant in Moss Landing, where exposed lithium-ion batteries could react violently and spark a flare-up. "Water reacts to lithium in a very violently responsive way," said Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church.Initially as the fire raged, nearby residents were evacuated. “Evacuations ordered in California after fire at battery power plant in Moss Landing” [USA Today – 01/17/2025] Monterey County soon thereafter declared a state of emergency. “'Terrifying': Monterey County declares emergency after massive lithium battery plant fire” [USA Today – 01/23/2025] Initial tests are being done to examine the environmental damage, and it is very bad news. “‘Extremely disturbing’: High levels of heavy metals at Monterey estuary after lithium battery site fire” [LA Times – 01/29/2025] Days after one of the world’s largest lithium ion battery storage facilities burst into flames in Monterey County, researchers found alarmingly high concentrations of heavy metals at a nearby estuary that is home to several endangered species. The concentration of nickel, manganese and cobalt measured on the surface of the soil is hundreds to thousands of times as much as the levels in the surface soil prior to the fire or compared with levels measured deeper in the soil. San José State’s soil samples suggest there could be long-term environmental and health effects from the toxic blaze…By the way, Moss Landing is not an isolated event. Just a few days later there was a similar fire in Australia. “Factory in Cheltenham in Melbourne's south-east erupts in flames after lithium-ion batteries catch fire, prompting smoke alert for surrounding areas” [Sky News Australia – 01/30/2025] There is nothing funny about these awful lithium-ion fires, but I do chuckle when these stories unironically refer to battery storage fires in the context of “clean energy.” Hey Buck - Big fan of your columns on EVs, and they were the first thing I thought of when my friend’s car caught fire last night - it was a 2024 Jeep grand Cherokee plug in hybrid. Super nice car. All the features. Heated and cooled seats. Suspension that could be raised and lowered as needed. 40 mile electric range. Good gas mileage. Then it spontaneously caught fire after a 10 mile drive.Meanwhile in Massachusetts… “Hybrid vehicle catches fire inside Wayland garage. Why it could have been worse” [Metro West Daily News – 01/14/2025] {Fire Chief] McPherson said a resident of the home was inside the garage at the time a Jeep Cherokee 4XE began to smoke heavily, before erupting into flames. To be clear, this Jeep Cherokee 4XE Firefighters used one of their engines to drag the burning SUV out of the garage, and prevent it from creating any significant structural damage. All these recent Jeep plug-in fires would seem to explain this headline that I somehow missed a few months ago: “Park outside: 150,000 Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler hybrids recalled for fire risk” [USA Today – 10/01/2024] Certain Jeep hybrid plug-in models are being recalled due to several reports of fires starting when the cars are driving or parked, according to car companies Stellantis and Chrysler. For those who purchase EVs (including plug-in hybrids) from a legacy auto manufacturer, it is becoming disturbingly common to receive a notice at some point advising that your vehicle is so dangerous that it must be parked outside and away from structures… As a result, park-outside notices have been issued to certain Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler hybrid owners to prevent the spread of potential flames. Owners have also been advised to avoid charging their batteries for the time being. If it’s advisable not to plug in your plug-in hybrid, perhaps it would make more sense to simply buy a gasoline-only vehicle. The exploding plug-in hybrid problem isn’t just a Jeep problem either. “Latest Ford Recall Entails Fire Risk in Plug-In Hybrid SUVs; A manufacturing error has presented the risk of a short circuit and fire in certain Ford hybrid SUV” [Ratchet & Wrench – 01/02/2025] According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an error in manufacturing has resulted in potential microdefects and local stresses within the battery, causing the cell separator layer to get damaged. This chain of events will likely lead to a short circuit, and potentially a fire.Audi too… “Audi has recalled 4,616 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) because their high-voltage batteries may overheat and trigger a fire” [KBB – 12/10/2024] While traditional Prius-type hybrids are a great advancement in gasoline-powered automotive technologies, plug-in EV hybrids are little more than clunky, complicated novelties for which there are much better ICE or pure EV options. It’s akin to buying an amphibious vehicle because you might occasionally want a boat. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Hybrids have two motors and so are more complicated and more expensive. This can meet (and exceed) the necessary ROI for trucks and taxis that put on lots of miles. Not so much for lightly used second and third cars. The former doesn't need subsidies. The latter is an economic sink hole.

My Buick LaCrosse, the penultimate generation, was available as a hybrid. Unfortunately the gas engine was the 180-hp four-cylinder. I had that in a lighter car, the '11 Regal, and the car was woefully underpowered on any kind of steep incline like the bridge I drive across every day. If I were doing, say, 50, and a car pulled just ahead of me so that I had to back off, I had to downshift for the revs to achieve my former speed. In a heavier, full-size car like the LaCrosse, that would have been worse.
Someone here said that the engines as used in such hybrids have more torque than those standing alone. Maybe that would work. But I'd rather they'd coupled the electric motor with an engine toting more hp. In the meantime I'm more than pleased with my big gas-engined Buick. Posted by: Dr. Claw at February 10, 2025 11:10 AM (jbnUc) - Grok: Electric vehicles (EVs) have become increasingly popular in Israel. Here's a breakdown based on available data: Market Share: By the end of 2023, EVs represented about 18.6% of new car sales in Israel. This indicates a significant growth in the adoption of electric vehicles within the country. Total Number of EVs: As of December 2023, there were approximately 97,721 electric vehicles in Israel, a notable increase from 45,270 in December 2022, showcasing a more than doubling of the EV fleet within a year. Growth Rates: In 2024, the EV market in Israel grew by 27.9%, suggesting continued strong growth. This follows a trend where in 2023, the market share of EVs was around 24.5% of new car deliveries in February, indicating a year where EVs made up a substantial portion of new vehicle sales. Brand Dominance: Chinese manufacturers like BYD have taken a leading role in this market. BYD was the most popular EV brand in Israel in 2023 with significant sales numbers, followed by Geely and Tesla. This reflects a shift where Chinese brands are capturing a large segment of the market. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at February 10, 2025 11:15 AM (KTCHq) 58
Plug-in hybrids were largely designed to avoid government emissions and gas-mileage requirements. Because of their (limited) EV-only range, PIH can score much higher on these tests, and thereby avoid costly fines or restrictions. of course it's a scam, and everyone knows it's a scam.
According to official figures, the new Lambo Revuelto -- a fire-breathing, 1000-hp, 9500 rpm V12 -- somehow scores as good on emissions and mileage as basic transportation. It does that by gaming the system with its limited EV range, when everyone knows that nobody is paying $800k for a Lambo to drive around in EV. I have a GoTrax scooter that I use for, well, quick jots when I don't feel like walking. It's good for that, though of course at that scale weight becomes an issue. Anyway, to me that's a reasonable application for those who don't feel like bicycling around or whatever. It still takes four hours to charge for a range of about 3-5 miles at a top speed of around 20mph if I have the wind at my back and am going downhill. I am thinking about a Vespa though... A hybrid that harvests it's own energy through braking or coasting to recharge batteries that are used to augment acceleration or used for low speed environments would be my idea of an "EV."
This tech is found on Formula 1 race cars and various iterations of endurance racers... like the ones you'd see at the 24 hours of Le Mans. I'm unaware of many mainstream hybrids that can utilize this technology to enhance performance other than simply extend range or provide some sort of virtue signaling. --- Learned something new the other day. Seems luxury cars are considered " milely" if they have say, 40k at 4 years. "But that's lower than the 12k per year average" Yes, but luxury cars are no longer what you remember-- they're not supposed to be daily drivers, cars that go to 200k easily; they now have the same lower quality as regular cars so buyers will go new rather than the likely repair expense. One quibble Buck. I would not call the prius hybrid battery packs 'small'. Family has owned two and neither ever caught fire. But they do have quite a bit of lithium battery pack for the boosted MPG.
I'll go out on a limb and say that since the lithium batteries on them are only charged from excess power when the gas engine is running or from the wheels when braking they are less prone to catch fire than any vehicle that requires fast charging. Still when we have a sensible energy policy and fuel is available and not $$ a pure ICE vehicle is better. Generic cars such as a Camry have leather heated and cooled seats, great stereos, sunroof, power everything, 360 degree cameras, parking sensors, etc. These were once reserved for luxury brands. The line between luxury and non luxury is hard to define now. There’s really no justification for spending $100K on a luxury brand because the $40K Camry 90% of the luxury. Other than showing off the badge of course. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at February 10, 2025 11:39 AM (2xLsW) 159

Fools tend to be the ones in charge because they are typically the loudest, brashest, most seemingly confident ones in the room. And people routinely conflate this with competence. That's how these people end up in charge of work projects, corporate departments, land in the C-suite, or run the government. Life is high school and it never changes.

Ignore for a moment their continuous 4 year claim that if you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear from an investigation. O Chem is tough because of the fast pace and amount of memorization required, also because it is full of Premed grade grubbers for which it is the classic weed out class. I found PChem to be easier as it is more conceptual and less memorizing, as long as you can do the math. PChem was also more fun because few Premeds take it.

On Hybrids -
Post Katrina with spike in gas price, me driving a smallish SUV for commuting, and wife wanting her own car we looked into getting an economy car for me to commute in. Long story short, relative to price of a then economy car (small engine $10-12k) the payback period for a hybrid was, checking calcs... Fucking never. Literally. 50-100 years on gas alone. Then hybrids were an option on mid-level cars, so instead of looking $10-12k for a commuter it was $30-35k. $20k on the front end is/was a lifetime supply of gas. She managed to get home and called her local dealership to figure out how to get it fixed. The guy on the other end of the line told her to get the car out of the garage and park it away from any structures or vehicles. Scared the crap out of her. I once had a black car with a black interior. That thing was unbearable over 40 degrees, without the AC.
Posted by: Bulg at February 10, 2025 *** Exactly why I like light-colored interiors. Plus they seem larger inside. And as for black interiors not showing dirt? Panda feathers. Unless you work in a coal mine, the greyish dirt shows against black leather, vinyl, or velour. I did sit in a vintage Mercedes 250SL from 1967 or so once. It had a dark silver exterior over a *chocolate brown* interior, and that color was oddly attractive. Or maybe I was just hungry. And meanwhile we have a Dept. of Transportation and a NTSB and all sorts of agencies that are supposed to look our for the people's safety when it comes to our roads and what we allow on them.
It seems those regulators are much more worried about carbon and melanin and hormonal imbalances than lithium's potential kinetic reaction to water all compactly contained in a speeding chemical bomb that firefighters won't even come near when they, unexpectedly, go off. A more intelligent people might come to the conclusion that perhaps the bureaucrats of the regulatory state aren't really there to them safe. Drove a hybrid Lexus RX350 recently. Didn't like it. The regenerative braking at city speeds just doesn't allow you to coast up to a light. I let up on the gas and I start slowing down immediately, you have to keep you foot on the gas, but for slow movement you're trying to play with really small throttle angles on the gas pedal so its easy enough to over gas what you want to do, or you have to 'run up' then let off and if you misjudged the deceleration from the regen brake your hitting the real brakes harder than you wanted to in the first place. Plus it was overtly heavy to drive in steering the ICE version is snappy and precise in steering.
Definitely didn't keep it in the garage, just in case of battery issues. Posted by: Janir at February 10, 2025 12:59 PM (JtW2J) 406

Hybrid is a very vague term when it comes to different companies. It's like the way late 70s motorcycles had wildly differing approaches to rear suspension.
The Toyota approach is to have the IC engine solely drive the generator charging the battery. The wheels are driven by electric motors. In my 2017 Prius V (formerly the largest Prius but since discontinued in favor of the hybrid RAV 4 after it sank in what that market segment really wanted size-wise) I can select an EV mode that is good for about 20 miles at best. My situation is such that the only time I've ever used it was by default when I was unexpectedly running on fumes. My home is too far from most things to get any value from that range. Not really, I could probably save a few bucks a month using it but it require me to make the conscious choice when setting out and it just doesn't happen. My brother has the Prius plug-in hybrid model. It isn't especially different under the hood. It just has a bigger battery and a charge port. Not great EV range but at least double my Prius. Since he works from home in Simi Valley, CA, he says he only needs to put gas in about every three weeks of day to day travel. Posted by: Epobirs at February 10, 2025 01:15 PM (/0z9K) 409

There hasn't been a genuinely new battery chemistry in over century. Newer battery types are refinements of stuff first tried a very long time ago but lacking practicality under the limitations of the era. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on battery breakthroughs that aren't simply improved versions of the existing products. Posted by: Epobirs at February 10, 2025 01:18 PM (/0z9K) 410
