  • Speaking of DeepSeek the iOS app sends unencrypted data back to Chinese servers. (Ars Technica)

Chinese servers controlled by ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok.

This is on top of the previously reported logging servers at DeepSeek that were open to the entire internet.

So basically not only can DeepSeek and its Chinese partners see everything you do, but so can everyone else.

  • A massive brute force attack against insecure commercial VPN devices is under way, using insecure consumer routers in an enormous botnet. (Bleeping Computer)

2.8 million devices have been compromised - notably 1.1 million in Brazil where Mikrotik routers are popular, but extending to many other countries and devices from Cisco, ZTE, Huawei, and others.

All trying to guess the passwords to corporate VPN devices that are also insecure, though not quite as much. The software is smart enough to block repeated failed logins from a single source, but can't figure things out when it's under attack from 2.8 million directions at once.

  • VSCode's remote development agent is an unsecured remote access tool. (Fly.io)

This is usually considered a bad thing.

  • If you need a not too expensive docking station with a ton of ports, this is one. (Notebook Check)

It has two DisplayPort ports, HDMI, and VGA, Ethernet - though only gigabit, eight USB ports at various speeds, SD and microSD slots, three audio jacks, and a volume knob.

You can't run all four video ports at 4K, but that's true of pretty much all docks. USB4 and Thunderbolt can only deliver two 4K streams in, so a dock without its own graphics hardware can only deliver two 4K streams out.

The lack of at least 2.5Gb Ethernet made me curious how cheap docks with that feature are these days, and you can find them for less than $50 on Amazon US.

On Amazon AU, somehow, you can get one for $16. I just ordered two. It's a basic model with only one video output, but that's ridiculously cheap.

"President and CEO Roger Krone told the Associated Press there was “some backlash,” but said there was a small spike in membership after announcing the rebranding in May.

“The fact that we were going with a more kind of gender-neutral name, a lot of people kind of wanted to know more about it,” Krone told the AP. "

I think it was Robert Vaughn (who did his share of schlock too) who said, "An actor acts." In other words, you take the jobs as they come and do the best work you can in each one. Just ten or so years before this movie you mention, Patrick had been featured in several episodes of the prestigious and grand I, Claudius for the BBC. And I'm sure he'd done his time in Shakespeare, as William Shatner had before him.

Stewart said that for the first few months of filming Next Generation, he really didn't unpack. He was scared the show would flop and he'd have to head back to England. But he did his usual best, and the scripts got better, and he finally unpacked, I guess.

That's true. Just because a word has "-ly" at the end does not necessarily make it an adverb.

So here we have two female celebs with male first names and adjectives as surnames. What shall we make of this? What is it, in and of itself? Blake may have chosen one or both of her names. But I think Taylor was named so by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Swift.

86 The $516 billion in funding for fiscal year 2024 for which authorizations have expired can be attributed to 491 expired authorizations contained in 177 laws out of all 304 laws with expired authorizations. Of that total, $395 billion is associated with specified authorizations and $121 billion with indefinite authorizations. Nearly two-thirds ($320 billion) of that $516 billion was provided for activities whose authorizations expired more than a decade ago.

tldr: Congress is spending money without legal programs.

He refined his craft as a stage actor, which requires a "bigger" kind of presence so that you can be seen and understood throughout the theatre. It's why some of his performances, especially later ones, seem hammy and theatrical in spots. HIs early TV and movie work doesn't display that; he tailored his performances to the camera, just as stage/screen actors like Olivier and Henry Fonda did.

His work as Archie Goodwin in the unsold Nero Wolfe pilot, filmed when he was about 29 and visible on YooToob, is wonderfully done. I'd never thought of him as Archie -- but he would have been good.

146 Morning peeps.

This judge who barred Trump's people from accessing Treasury data? The Treasury's Bureau of Financial Services holds all the transaction data for every Federal money outlay. It's the Fed's checkbook ledger.

Of course there's money outlays that are "off the books" but in reality those are small potatoes compared to what entities like USAID was doing.

Imagine looking deep into the FBI's budget, the CIA's or any other Agency, Bureau or Department. It's almost a one stop shop at BFS.

This judge didn't dream this stunt up himself. Just as the judges and DA's who went after Trump didn't concoct those cases themselves. It's a sure sign of panic.

DeSantis said he's looking at a similar agreement with DHS that would include officers of Florida Fish and Wildlife and Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as well as members of the state guard.

Pursuant to the Consumer Financial Protection Act, I have notified the Federal Reserve that CFPB will not be taking its next draw of unappropriated funding because it is not "reasonably necessary" to carry out its duties. The Bureau's current balance of $711.6 million is in fact excessive in the current fiscal environment. This spigot, long contributing to CFPB's unaccountability, is now being turned off.

Their backgrounds and work are shrouded in secrecy, even as they access the government’s most sensitive information.

In 10 years 50% of lots will still be dirt.

I mentioned here a week or so ago that the local goverment here (NC) is proposing staggering regulations for rebuilding after The Storm. An 80 page document, filled with lateral references to 'Shall conform to' (other regulations). I have not been able to make it through the whole thing. I don't believe that any ordinary property owner could absorb the entire thing.

There will be many buyouts.

For the sake of both of our kids? Grow up.
Racist trolls on the internet, while offensive, don't threaten my kids. You know what does? A culture that denies grace to people who make mistakes. A culture that encourages congressmen to act like whiny children.

246 >The turning point was the Clinton impeachment, when the decision was made that the ends justify the means. Prior to that point, principles still had universal applicability.

They spiked the Lewinsky story, which would have been a feeding frenzy under an R administration. Or maybe they were just waiting to confirm with a second blue dress.

Drudge Report made them feel like they were behind-the-curve. Attitudinally they were and still are.

249 Congress hasn't passed a budget since sometime around 2009. I hope PDTS uses this DOGE business to illustrate how out of control the government is and just shuts it down until we have a budget and every expenditure is auditable.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at February 09, 2025 07:23 AM

What needs to come out of this is a budget where each expenditure has a line item and each line item has a name next to it as far as who requested the money and who is responsible for making sure that money will be appropriated and spent correctly.

Every US citizen should be able to go onto the website of the federal government and choose an agency and see their entire budget and what each and every taxpayer dollar is allocated to be spent on or has been spent on throughout the fiscal year.

A government official wants $1000 for a toilet, there should be the name of the government official, the name of the company charging $1000 for a toilet and a list of all the other companies sourced and what they charged for the toilet which were rejected.

We should have this for every single expenditure of taxpayer dollars. Period. And we should have this BEFORE the spending is approved.

Especially this part. This way when there is a line item in a proposed budget for $15 million for pushing transgender bullshit in Abu Dabi or some shit, there is a name next to that line item of who is requesting it. And then the American people know to call their representatives and tell them to reject that BS and run whoever requested that out of public office.

251 All this USAID stuff is just one massive example of Taxation without Representation. Which was one of the main reasons for the American Revolutionary War.

So those calling people who are against the audit of USAID "un-American" are exactly correct. Taxation without Representation is un-American. Those who are advocating for USAID to continue with its taxation without representation are therefore un-American.

This cannot be highlighted or repeated enough.

252 Its such as you learn my mind! You seem to grasp a lot
about this, such as you wrote the guide in it or something.
I believe that you can do with a few percent to power the
message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is great blog.
An excellent read. I will certainly be back.
